David Brehaut details the events leading up to the Newlyn v Springbank clash being abandoned at half-time - CHFL: R13
Transcript
00:00A dramatic day in the Central Highlands Football League, Round 13 and one of the senior games
00:06has been abandoned at half time after boundary umpires and players were showing signs of
00:13hypothermia. Conditions at Newland for the game between Newland and Springbank were nothing
00:20short of atrocious. Muddy ground, rain, strong wind, the wind chill factor, well it just
00:27became too much for the four boundary umpires, youngsters and up to six Springbank players.
00:34They lost three in the first half and there was every chance they were going to lose another
00:38three during the break. So some discussions took place and it was decided the game would
00:43be abandoned. Newland get the points as they were in front at the time and with the game
00:49reaching the halfway mark it's regarded as a result. So they get four valuable premiership
00:56points in their quest to stay in the top eight and for Springbank, well it was just
01:00a matter of player welfare. They just had to accept that that was the way it was and
01:06you've got to put the players first and those young boundary umpires and that was the case.
01:11Sensationally, the third time this year that Newland has been involved in a game which
01:17has been called off before full time. So you know, it's just something you rarely see once
01:24let alone three times in a season and that's been the case for the Cats. So, how's it all
01:29finish up? Well, the game was called at half time, Newland take the four premiership points
01:35and that helps them in their quest to play finals.
