00:38It was awarded the 2008 Skyscraper of the Year by Emporis.
00:43Design Modgakuin invited architects to compete to build its new Tokyo location, stipulating
00:48that the building could not be rectangular.
00:50About 50 architects submitted more than 150 proposals.
00:54The winner had a curved shell of white aluminum and dark blue glass, criss-crossed by a web
00:59of white diagonal lines.
01:01The architects, Tange Associates, said its cocoon-like shape symbolizes nurturing the
01:06students inside.
01:07They also said they wanted the building to revitalize the surrounding area and to create
01:11a gateway between Shinjuku Station and the Shinjuku Central Business District.
01:16The building earned the firm the Emporis 2008 Skyscraper of the Year award.
01:21The building is built on the former site of the now-demolished Asahi Life Headquarters.
01:26Construction of the Modgakuin Cocoon Tower began in May 2006 and was completed in October
01:302008.
01:31The 204-meter, 50-story tower is the second tallest educational building in the world
01:37and was the 17th tallest building in Tokyo.
01:40The vertical campus can accommodate 10,000 students for the three vocational schools
01:44that occupy the building.
01:47Tokyo Modgakuin, for which the building is named after, is a fashion school.
01:51The other schools, HAL Tokyo and Shudo Aiko, are information technology and medical schools,
01:57respectively, that are operated by Modgakuin University.
02:01Each floor of the tower contains three rectangular classrooms that surround an inner core.
02:06The inner core consists of an elevator, a staircase and a support shaft.
02:10Every three floors, a three-story student lounge is located between the classrooms and
02:15faces three directions, east, southwest and northwest.
02:19Shinjuku, officially called Shinjuku City, is a special ward of Tokyo, Japan.
02:24It is a major commercial and administrative center, housing the northern half of the busiest
02:29railway station in the world, Shinjuku Station, as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government
02:34Building, the administrative center of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
02:38As of 2018, the ward has an estimated population of 346,235 and a population density of 18,232
02:47people per square kilometer.
02:49The total area is 18.23 square kilometers.
02:53Since the end of World War II, Shinjuku has become a major secondary center of Tokyo,
02:58Fukutoshin, rivaling the original city center in Marunouchi.
03:03Shinjuku is also commonly used to refer to the entire area surrounding Shinjuku Station.
03:08The southern half of this area and of the station are located in the neighboring Shibuya ward.
03:13In 1634, during the Edo period, as the outer moat of the Edo Castle was built, a number
03:18of temples and shrines moved to the Yotsuya area on the western edge of Shinjuku.
03:23In 1698, Naito Shinjuku had developed as a new, shin, station, shuku or juku, on the
03:29Koshu Kaido, one of the major highways of that era.
03:33Naito was the family name of a daimyo whose mansion stood in the area.
03:37His land is now a public park, the Shinjuku Gyoen.
03:40In 1898, the Yadobashi water purification plant, the city's first modern water treatment
03:45facility, was built in the area that is now between the park and the train station.
03:51In 1920, the town of Naito Shinjuku, which comprised large parts of present-day Shinjuku,
03:56the neighborhood, not the municipality, parts of Nishi Shinjuku and Kabukicho were integrated
04:02into Tokyo City.
04:04Shinjuku began to develop into its current form after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923
04:09since the seismically stable area largely escaped the devastation.
04:13That is all.
