Leeds councillor Karen Bruce said that a Pop Tart was to blame for a dramatic toaster fire that nearly torched her kitchen.

Coun Bruce, who represents Ardsley and Robin Hood, said she had been preparing the sugary breakfast treat for her daughter when she briefly left the room.

To her shock, she said that she returned to find the appliance ablaze on her kitchen countertop.

She has since shared advice from the West Yorkshire Fire Authority to prevent similar incidents.

00:00Believe it or not this is my toaster.
00:04I put a pop-tart
00:08kind of thing in, went in to see my daughter
00:12in the living room, came back in half a minute later and
00:16the toaster was on fire, flames were up here
00:20and there was ash flying about the kitchen.
00:24Luckily my husband thought quickly
00:28and he got the fire blanket and covered it
00:32with it, otherwise the kitchen would probably have burnt down.
00:36So it was quite scary really
00:40but that's how fast it can happen and of course the pop-tart
00:44type marshmallow thing had sugar in it and you know
00:48it is very dangerous so I won't be cooking those anymore.
00:52As a council I've just joined
00:56the West Yorkshire Fire Authority and I'm sharing a link with you
01:00to their home safety page which might be useful.
