The Faneromeni dam, the main water source for the area, has seen its levels drop drastically due to illegal water pumping, low rainfall and high temperatures.

00:00A state of emergency has been declared in Massara on the Greek island of Crete due to
00:07water shortages. Water reserves are constantly decreasing and levels in the Pheneromeni Dam,
00:15which supplies water and irrigation to the area, has fallen to an alarming level. Illegal
00:21pumping of water from the dam, which led to a loss of three million cubic meters of water
00:27combined to low rainfall and hot weather, have created a shortage.
00:57To deal with the water crisis and the shore essential needs, the municipality of Phaistos
01:15imposed water restrictions on the irrigation of crops.
01:20Phaistos also declared a state of emergency, deblocking immediate funding.
