00:00Meanwhile, we will talk to Chris Perez, Assistant Weather Services Chief and Spokesperson for Weather of Pag-asa.
00:07Good evening to you, Sir Chris.
00:09Good evening, Ms. Connie, and to all of our viewers.
00:13The rains here in Metro Manila and other provinces have not yet stopped, right, Sir?
00:18According to you, how much of this rain was caused by us?
00:23Well, Connie, we are looking at the rainfall caused by the heavy rains here in our weather station in Metro Manila.
00:32In the span of 57 hours, that is from 8am of July 22 to 5pm this afternoon,
00:40590 mm of rain was recorded in the current heavy rain episode that was caused by Karina.
00:48We can see that there is a lot of rain here.
00:50That is why we can see the readings in some parts of Metro Manila
00:54and in the neighboring provinces here in the Northern and Central Zone and in the Southern Luzon area, Connie.
01:01And because of the heavy rainfall, there are a lot of things that are still remembered, right?
01:06That is when the 2009 earthquake happened.
01:09The question that many are asking is, is there really more rainfall than the earthquake?
01:15Actually, Connie, this is what we do.
01:17Let's not compare the rainfall of the typhoon and the rainfall of the typhoon because it's a different weather season.
01:24But the better information is, we looked at the typhoon episode of 2012.
01:30There was also a typhoon that had almost the same movement as Karina's typhoon.
01:33Our country did not get affected, it moved to the Taiwan area and the typhoon also changed.
01:38And so far, this 2012 typhoon episode, it was enhanced by Typhoon Henner.
01:44It recorded around 1,007 millimeters of rain in a span of three days.
01:51Now, if we compare it with the current typhoon episode enhanced by Super Typhoon Karina,
01:56as I said earlier, in 57 hours, 590.1 millimeters of rain fell in this enhanced typhoon in 2024.
02:05That is why we are comparing it because they have the same typhoon weather system
02:08and the same situation where almost two typhoons hit the eastern part of our country.
02:14Now, if we look at 2012, there was more rain in a span of three days.
02:19But this current episode is not yet over.
02:21Let's see, maybe there will be more.
02:23The 1,007.4 millimeters that we recorded in a three-day period during the 2012 typhoon, Connie.
02:30And Super Typhoon Karina is already a type of typhoon that is far away in the country.
02:35Will it make the typhoon stronger?
02:38That's possible, Connie.
02:39That's why we expect the outlook of the rain.
02:43The rain that fell in Habagat, not only here in Metro Manila,
02:47but also in the provinces, we expect it to be possible until Friday.
02:51There will be heavy rain and gradually, the rain will decrease this coming weekend.
02:57That is if the forecast movement, intensity of the typhoon and its immediate effect on the current Habagat
03:03that is affected here in the western section of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will not change.
03:07Alright, thank you very much for the update, Mr. Chris Perez,
03:11Assistant Weather Services Chief and Spokesperson for Weather ng Pag-asa.
