00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:35Now, prick up your ears, have a little pause for thought
00:38and indeed take a lead from all those dog lovers.
00:41We're all heading down to the NEC because Crufts starts today,
00:44the world's biggest dog show.
00:46Apparently there's something like 21,000 applicants from all over the world,
00:5046 countries, in fact, take place,
00:53and it all leads up, I suppose, to the best of breed.
00:58Last year it was a West Highland white terrier
01:01that took the plaudits and took the cup.
01:03I began to think about my dogs.
01:05I want to start when I was a little chap
01:07and I was given a dog when I was about seven
01:10and it was called Patch and it was a little spaniel cross.
01:13And I loved little Patch,
01:15but unfortunately little Patch contracted distemper,
01:18which apparently is a doggy disease, and passed away.
01:21I was so distressed by this
01:23that my parents rushed around to find a replacement for Patch
01:26and unhappily they presented me, through a friend of theirs
01:30who bred these wretched things, a corgi.
01:33I'm eight years old. I don't want a corgi.
01:36Called Ricky.
01:37But my Jasmine, of course, was my precious dog
01:40and was with me for 14 years.
01:42And I had that terrible thought the other day, Rachel,
01:45that when I replace Jasmine, as I will do early this year,
01:49it will live longer than me.
01:51And that's a sobering thought.
01:53Mortality has come to rest within my vision.
01:57What about your favourite dog breed?
01:59LAUGHTER
02:01It's your unique skill to turn any introduction into death.
02:05You're the king of death.
02:07What about your favourite dog breed?
02:10Any dog I love, but especially spaniels.
02:12My grandad had a spaniel when I was growing up called Sammy.
02:15Yeah?
02:16I'm the type of person that walks down the street,
02:18if I see a dog, I'll shout, dog,
02:20and that'll probably be the highlight of my day.
02:22Well, it's the right sort of thing to call it, I suppose.
02:25Now, who's with us?
02:26We have giant killer Neil Popat is back,
02:29a physics student from the University of Leicester,
02:31a Londoner, and has secured your first win yesterday
02:35over somebody who had, in fact, got three wins under his belt already,
02:39so you're a contender.
02:40But let's see, because you appeared and took away his crown,
02:44whether Mike Horrod, who's joining you today,
02:47welcome, Mike.
02:48Thank you.
02:49You came retired from Rosalie, near Bakewell in Derbyshire,
02:54is that right?
02:55Yes.
02:56And now you're chairman of the Bakewell Scout group.
02:58You were a scout as a young chap yourself,
03:00a scout leader too.
03:01Yes.
03:02And here you are now, the Scout movement.
03:04Is it a growing movement?
03:06Is it strong?
03:07It is slowly growing.
03:08It's gone through a bit of a recession about 10, 15 years ago,
03:11but it's slowly coming back again now.
03:13Good.
03:14The values of scouting are still very much with today.
03:17They're valuable values, actually.
03:20Now, let's have a big round of applause for Neil and Mike Horrod.
03:29And over in the corner, Susie, of course.
03:31And let's dance the night away.
03:34He's about to.
03:35He's about to set off on his UK tour.
03:37It's the wonderful dancer that is Pasha Kovalev.
03:40Welcome.
03:41Welcome back.
03:45Now then, what shall we do?
03:46Neil, shall we have a letters round?

05:14And for seven, we have a toilet.

09:14Pronking across the belt.
09:16Now, Rachel, 963?

10:58Good man.
11:00Neil? Just a six.
11:02And your six? Haled.
11:04Haled. How much of a risk is this, Mike?
11:06Probably, cos I can't spell
11:08very well, but... Oh, holidayer.
11:10Aw. A holidayer?
11:12Yeah, we're trying exactly that.
11:14A vacationer. Yeah.
11:16Sadly, it's not in the dictionary.
11:18It's completely plausible and you probably will find it
11:20certainly in American English, but not there.
11:22That is bad luck. Yeah.
11:24Good shot at it, then.
11:26Now, what can we have, I wonder?
11:28We can have a...
11:30Seven-letter holiday. Holiday, indeed.
11:32Sorry. Now, then.
11:3425 plays. Mike's 12 now,
11:36as we turn to Neil in the lead

12:57A coaster. Yes.
12:59Pasha? We have another seven.
13:01Yes. Ostrich.
13:03And we actually can find
13:05an eight-letter word in there.
13:07Chariots. Very good.
13:09Chariots.
13:11So, 25 to 19,
13:13and it's numbers.
13:15For you, Mike.
13:17Can I have two large and four small, please?
13:19You can indeed, thank you, Mike.

14:12432.
14:15100 times by five.
14:17100 by five.
14:19500.
14:21Take away 75. 425.
14:23Add six. 431.
14:25And eight divided by eight gives you the one.
14:27Lovely. 432. Well done.
14:33So, lengthens your lead, Neil, then.
14:3535 to Mike's 19.
14:37As we turn to Pasha,
14:39and, Pasha, you love travel.
14:41We certainly do. You've travelled a long way in life.
14:44And great food, and often you combine the two.
14:46Oh, yes.
14:48Well, we all love food,
14:50and some of us love travelling,
14:52but I guess in different countries,
14:54you get different treats,
14:56and what's popular in Russia,
14:58let's say,
15:00would be not quite that interesting
15:02in other countries.
15:04Travelling in Japan,
15:06I was trying to find
15:08authentic sushi restaurant.
15:10Couldn't find one.
15:13It was the last day of our tour in Japan,
15:15and I was determined to find something.
15:17Walking around town,
15:19after 10,
15:21close to 11 o'clock at night,
15:23went to some coffee shop,
15:25asking where I can get
15:27some sushi at this time,
15:29and a huge gentleman,
15:31twice taller than me and five times wider,
15:33said,
15:35OK, he spoke a little bit of English,
15:37I'll show you,
15:39so he took me around the corner,
15:41and I cannot see a thing.
15:43I'm like, OK, here we go, I'm done.
15:45And then we walked a few steps,
15:47and suddenly this wall slides open,
15:49bright light comes out,
15:51and it's a little, little coffee shop,
15:53sorry, sushi shop,
15:55size of probably three, four chairs
15:57with a little bar
15:59where the sushi chef cuts stuff,
16:01and he didn't speak a word in English.
16:03I showed him money,
16:05said,
16:08he understood,
16:10and replied the same,
16:12and start cutting sushi for me,
16:14give me different things to try.
16:16I didn't know at all what he was giving me,
16:18and I was having something very chewy,
16:20and I'm like, OK,
16:22that's a nice taste.
16:24What is it?
16:26Ask him with my sign language.
16:28He pointed in the corner.
16:30It was a big puffer fish
16:32hanging up in the corner,
16:34and I thought,
16:37OK, that's how I check
16:39if he's a good cook,
16:41good sushi chef or not,
16:43because obviously it's one of the most poisonous fishes,
16:45and if it's not cut properly,
16:47you're not going to see the breakfast.
16:49No more.
16:51It was quite a journey,
16:53and that's actually in that same sushi shop.
16:55It was the first time
16:57and the last time I tried horse.
16:59He gave me a piece of meat.
17:01It was quite sweet, quite tender.
17:03I was like, yeah, I like it.
17:05What is that?
17:07Thinking he would show me a cow or something like that,
17:09and he said...
17:11I'm like...
17:13A horse is my friend.
17:15OK, well...
17:17I know, it's an emotional thing, isn't it, the horse?
17:19It was a great experience.
17:21Very good.
17:25All right.
17:27Now then, 35-19.

20:45Quirked. It's a great one, this.
20:47A quirk. And quirky.
20:49Yeah. To have quirked somebody?
20:51Yeah. As a verb, it means in relation to
20:53a person's mouth or eyebrow,
20:55to move or twist suddenly,
20:57or your lips might quirk in disbelief.
20:59I like that.

25:51Neil?
25:53I'll stick with a six.
25:55A six, Mike? Six.
25:57Neil? Guides.
25:59And Mike? Midges.
26:01Any advance on six?
26:03Pasha, Susie?
26:05Well, we have another six misled.
26:07Yes. But we can go for seven,
26:09which is legumes.
26:11Vegetables. Yes.
26:13And that's in the dictionary.
26:15How extraordinary.
26:1771 plays 42.
26:19Susie, we come back to you
26:21for your wonderful origins of words.
26:23Today?
26:25Well, Pasha's sitting next to me,
26:27so I have to talk about some Russian words,
26:29even though I really can't speak Russian.
26:31I know Rachel now can.
26:33But we all know at least one word in Russian,
26:35and that's vodka.
26:37And vodka is Russian for
26:39little water.
26:41But there are some other words as well that we've taken over.
26:43Intelligentsia.
26:45Probably goes all the way back to the Romans, actually.
26:47But it came to us via the Russian
26:49avant-garde.
26:51We have perestroika,
26:53which we all knew certainly at one point
26:55in the political situation.
26:57But many more that are perhaps more familiar.
26:59So, Pasha's going to correct me on the original
27:01Russian spelling or pronunciation here.
27:03So, balaclava, is that right?
27:05Cosmonaut.
27:07There you go.
27:09Intelligentsia.
27:11You're doing very well.
27:13Sable.
27:15Sputnik, etc.
27:17But they're not quite as familiar to us
27:19possibly as French words
27:21and more European words.
27:23But what I loved browsing the Oxford Dictionary blog
27:25is finding
27:27English words that have come into Russian,
27:29because obviously we'll help you if you're a Russian speaker.
27:31Rachel will know some of these.
27:33So, they have chai for tea
27:35and cafe, again, excuse my pronunciation.
27:37But the ones that I particularly liked
27:39were...
27:41Don't ever ask for one chips, apparently,
27:43because that will just give you one crisp.
27:45The plural of chips
27:47Chipsy
27:49and jeans are
27:51Jeansy, which I think are very, very cute.
27:53There you go.
27:55So, many, many English words have crept into Russian,
27:57perhaps more so
27:59now than the Russian words have come over to us.
28:01But the ones that we do have, we value,
28:03especially vodka.
28:05Indeed, well done.
28:07APPLAUSE
28:11So, Neil, 71, and Mike, 42.
28:13And, Mike, you're on again. It's your letters game.

29:43Bad luck.
29:45No.
29:47Over in the corner, what news?
29:49Mainly sixes.
29:51Lots of sixes, actually.
29:53And some of them are sabbats.
29:55Thank you.

31:27fuddies, all those.
31:29They're not in, I'm afraid. Sorry about that, Neil.
31:31What can we have, I wonder?
31:33We can have diffused.
31:35That was one of the best words.
31:37Very good.
31:39That's it?
31:41Yes.
31:43All right. 77 to 49.
31:45And it's the final numbers game for Mike.
31:47Can I have three large and three small?
31:49Nice to mix it up, haven't had this selection for a while.
31:51Three large, three little.
31:53And for the final time today, they are
31:556, 8, 5,
31:5725, 50

33:39You were a risk-taker.
33:41And Neil had some disappointments, too,
33:43but he came through in the end.
