00:00All right, gentlemen, we went over the rules in the dressing room.
00:04All punches right here are legal.
00:05Anything here is going to be legal.
00:06I want you to obey my command, touch him up, scoot back.
00:10Israel Mercado had a four-week camp at Forge Boxing Club in LA.
00:14His trainer, Oscar Negrete, we might look familiar.
00:17He's a former title challenger who fought Ray Vargas.
00:20He had two draws and a loss against Joshua Franco, and he also lost to Ronnie Rios.
00:26And now he's in the corner of Israel Mercado as he takes on Dondrell Hayes, proudly representing
00:33Houston.
00:34P-Town, Israel Mercado from Pomona, California, land of Sugar Shane Mosley.
00:44Nice straight right there from Mercado.
00:45Sure was, right over that jab.
00:49You know, when I look at both these guys, when I did a little research on them, I start
00:53seeing, recognize that Mercado had some amateur experience.
00:59Then I look down, I look at their age, 29 years old, you got Hayes who's 28, and I look
01:06at their experience.
01:08You have Mercado that's been a pro for, how many years, seven years, and you have Hayes
01:16that's been in the pro seven years as well, and you look at their records, limited fights.
01:23They weren't sought out, just put it this way, they weren't sought out amateurs, you
01:30know.
01:31They had to navigate in the professionals, just trying to find their way.
01:36There's a lot of fighters out there, talented fighters, that don't know how to navigate,
01:40they don't know how to position themselves to get looked at by managers, or to get picked
01:44up by a big promoter, and this is what you get from that.
01:47Well, just look at our main event, Tevin Farmer said, look, I lost a lot of my early fights
01:53because I was mismanaged, didn't know how to lose weight, you know, all those situations
01:58where you're not being taken care of and guided, which is what top rank does best.
02:03Exactly.
02:04You got a fighter in Mercado who has 100 amateur fights, made it to the 2015 Olympic Trials,
02:09and you got a fighter in Donnell Haynes who only had 8 amateur bouts.
02:13So, you know, it's easily, you can get easily discouraged, especially being in the game
02:18seven years and only having 10 fights and not even moving, you see a lot of guys that
02:21you faced, you know, on the way up in the amateur system that are in good positions,
02:27or great positions.
02:28Well, let me give you an example of that, Tim.
02:31Israel Mercado, he has wins in the amateurs against Stephen Fulton, see, and who's a former
02:37world champion, Elijah Pierce, he's had two losses against Teofimo Lopez, Gary Antonio
02:42Russell, and Carlos Valderez, who went on to represent the US in Rio.
02:46Look, I wasn't sought out either as an amateur, you know, and I've won several national championships
02:51as so, but only by the grace of God, I was able to meet Thompson Boxing Promotions.
02:57I was at a party at a hotel, I ran into him, and...
03:01Were you doing your hot chocolate moves?
03:03Is that what caught their attention?
03:06Make a long story short, I got into it with one of the faculties, one of the faculty members
03:10of Thompson Boxing.
03:12We had a little scuffle, a little exchange, and then after that, the son of Thompson,
03:18Mr. Thompson, ran out and gave me a card and said, call me, I love your energy.
03:22So...
03:23Scrappy Tim.
03:24All right, let's listen in to Oscar Negrete in the corner, I'll translate for you.
03:31Give him some water.
03:36Excellent.
03:39And some water.
03:43Don't change the rhythm of the fight.
03:44I want you to keep at that pace.
03:46Start with a jab and work behind that.
03:50Once he throws a jab, he drops his hand, that's where you work.
03:53You go over the top.
03:57You're doing well.
03:59You got this, 1-0.
04:03It's your night.
04:05It's your night, son, for all the work you put in.
04:08We're gonna do this.
04:09You know, they're touching him a lot now.
04:10He's starting to, yeah, he's starting to...
04:14That feint, that feint.
04:15That feint, that jab.
04:16Feint, that jab.
04:17Feint with the jab.
04:18Boom.
04:19Failed, boom.
04:26Bite down on it, okay?
04:32Round two of a scheduled six-round fight here between Rael Mercado and Dondrelle Haynes.
04:37Excellent instructions from a former world title challenger in Oscar Negrete.
04:44Little bit of technique and a lot of motivation.
04:47Little bit of technique and a lot of motivation.
04:49That's great instructions in the corner.
04:51And actually being honest with you, man.
04:53And telling them, hey, you're doing well, doing exactly what we planned.
04:57All the hard work you put in the gym, you're putting to use.
05:01Which is confidence for a fighter.
05:02Gives a fighter confidence.
05:03Haynes has those looping shots that are dangerous if he can land.
05:10You can see Mercado, how he steps back.
05:13Uses his jab, understands range.
05:14You see him trying to slip right there.
05:16Got himself out of position, but...
05:18But he can put together some combinations, man.
05:20And those looping shots.
05:22Those looping shots coming around the guards, man.
05:24Those are dangerous.
05:27Dangerous shots.
05:30That straight right hand.
05:31That straight right hand there from Mercado behind the jab.
05:35And they're dangerous shots because they look like they're going to be going straight.
05:38That's why.
05:39They look like they're going to be coming straight.
05:40Because he throws them in combination sequence.
05:42But they come around the guard, surprising you.
05:44So you might think that that jab is coming and the left hook surprises you and hurts you.
05:50Haynes right now, he's trying to establish himself.
05:52But he's just walking forward and he's staying in range, in mid-range.
05:55And he's not using his jab.
05:56No feints.
05:57He's just trying to walk his man down.
05:59And that's a problem.
06:00You're there to be hit.
06:02And if you are there, you better be ready to anticipate any offense coming from Mercado.
06:07Because he is going to let those hands go.
06:11There they go.
06:12That's what I'm talking about.
06:14Them slapping left hook is something else, man.
06:17He's putting them together.
06:19And then all of a sudden, he freezes you with a jab.
06:22And that's a problem.
06:23And then all of a sudden, he freezes you with a jab.
06:28Oh, nice overhand right from Mercado.
06:30That's what I'm talking about.
06:33Those shots right there, you don't see coming.
06:35Coming behind that guard.
06:36And as long as Haynes just stays in that distance right there,
06:39Mercado, he's going to be able to do that all night.
06:41That's what he wants.
06:42He's going to get you to look at that jab and he's going to come around that left guard of Haynes.
06:50A lot more slapping than punching here.
06:52Oh, yeah.
06:53Yeah, yeah.
06:54He definitely is.
06:56Kawasaki like a mug.
06:57Slapping.
06:59Quick combinations.
07:00Hey, now you can make a living.
07:03Slapping people.
07:04Oh, you can make a living slapping.
07:06That is true.
07:09Put a little chalk on that jaw and then take those gloves off.
07:14You see the quickness of Mercado.
07:15He got right back into range to punch on Haynes when he made a miss.
07:20Ten seconds.
07:21Use it, use it.
07:23Oh, nice right hand there from Haynes.
07:26Just not enough from the fighter out of Houston, Texas.
07:33A man who will need a lot of offense tonight is Ruben Villa,
07:37the former world title challenger.
07:39Lost his only world title challenge against Emanuel Navarrete.
07:43He's ranked among the top fighters at 126 pounds.
07:47126 pounds.
07:48Wants to be the number one contender to the 126 pound belt by the WBC.
07:56And over his last five fights, this young man has been able to bounce back
08:00from that Emanuel Navarrete title loss with consecutive knockouts
08:04over Horacio Garcia and Michael Lopez.
08:06And then those last two decisions against Brandon Valdez
08:09and Christian Cruz Chacon.
08:11What do you anticipate we'll see from Villa tonight against Suleman Sagawa?
08:16Well, I think he's matched fairly easy tonight.
08:20Not going to lie.
08:21This is more of a stay busy fight for him until top rank figure out
08:25how they're going to position him in for a championship.
08:28But he's rebuilding since that loss to Navarrete back in, I believe,
08:32it was 2020.
08:33And if you really look at it, he was inactive during that point.
08:38Think about it.
08:39He was inactive.
08:40So this is the most active he's been since he's been with top rank.
08:43And he's had, I think, three or four fights since he's been with them.
08:47I mean, he should be sharp tonight.
08:49One.
08:50Two, when he fights again for the world championship,
08:53he should be able to win it and then retain the belt.
08:57That's important.
08:58Yeah, that championship experience against Navarrete will serve him well.
09:01He's a mandatory challenger to Ray Vargas, the WBC champion, the six-footer.
09:07We know another featherweight champion we've seen here in Rafael Espinosa
09:12who stands six-foot-one at featherweight.
09:14And did you see that video with Espinosa and Tito Trinidad?
09:17Yes.
09:18Where Trinidad looks small next to the featherweight champion?
09:21Of course.
09:22I mean, it's small as far as the height goes.
09:24But no, not as far as the weight goes.
09:26But yeah, the greatness there.
09:28Just, you know, probably giving the young man some tips.
09:30He did.
09:31Giving some tips.
09:32But I like Espinosa.
09:33And there's the one thing, again, that you can't quantify is the fighter
09:37and his hunger.
09:38Yes.
09:39He's a champion, but he fights like he's not a champion.
09:42That last fight that he put on, my goodness.
09:45That was impressive.
09:46Yeah, it was impressive.
09:47And it really was building up on that twelfth round against Robles Ramirez
09:51when he won the world title.
09:53Exactly.
09:54And that lets you know that he's different.
09:56The way he was able to finish that fight.
09:59There's a stab jab from Mercado.
10:02Who allowed Ains to get off quick, but landing some shots of his own
10:06and gets out of the way of that long right hand that Dondrell Haines
10:10tries to land.
10:11Haines believes that he needs to get closer, and he doesn't.
10:15He's got that long reach.
10:16He needs to use that jab like he's doing.
10:18Be responsible.
10:19You know, plant his feet.
10:21Stop moving his feet all over the place.
10:23And let those combinations fly.
10:25He's got a four-inch reach advantage.
10:27Seventy-three to sixty-nine in favor of Dondrell Haines.
10:30But he's fighting like a smaller guy, like you're saying.
10:32Well, he's trying to get close.
10:34You know, I don't know why he's trying to get so close
10:36when he's got the longer reach.
10:38And all his shots are looping anyways.
10:40So he should be from the outside.
10:41Exactly.
10:42From the outside.
10:43Straight shot will beat a looping shot nine times out of ten.
10:47Again, depending on the position at which you throw those shots.
10:50Nice three-punch combo there from Mercado.
10:52Because he's walking straight in.
10:54Again, no feints.
10:56No head movement.
10:57Keeping his head right on the line.
10:59It's easy work for a fighter like Mercado.
11:02Just target practice.
11:03Yeah, but Mercado did duck into a right uppercut there from Haines.
11:08Good.
11:09Haines starting to find a little range for his jab now.
11:12But again, fundamentally, after he jabs,
11:17defensively, he's irresponsible.
11:20And he's got no answer offensively when he's going backwards.
11:24And that happens.
11:25Exactly.
11:26Nice left uppercut from Mercado.
11:28Nice right to the body there from Haines.
11:32Nice overhand right there from Gabriel Haines.
11:36And then a flurry from Mercado.
11:38We'll listen in to Oscar Negrese.
11:43Easy work, papa.
11:44Easy work, okay?
11:45Easy work, okay?
11:46Asi.
11:47No te me confies, okay?
11:48Just like that.
11:49Don't get overconfident.
11:50Easy work.
11:51Okay?
11:54Ya lleva la mitad de la pelea ganado, okay?
11:56You don't have to fight.
11:57You're winning this.
11:58You've won every single round.
11:59That's why I want you to keep it.
12:01Don't take unnecessary risks
12:03and drop your hands.
12:04I need you to punch,
12:05but always keep yourself defensively responsible.
12:09Feint down and go up.
12:10Feint up, go downstairs.
12:12Use that jab.
12:13You can't get away from it.
12:17It's your range.
12:18Don't fall into his range.
12:20Fight at your pace and your range.
12:23We're winning this fight easily.
12:26You're not.
12:27You're looking real good.
12:28You're on TV, man.
12:29Everyone's watching you.
12:30Everyone's proud of you.
12:35That perspective from a former fighter
12:37who knows exactly what he needs.
12:40And he knows how he feels as well.
12:43And that's the difference
12:44between having a trainer that's done it
12:46and never done it before
12:47and done it at the professional level.
12:49I remember Joel.
12:51He would look at me
12:52and we would just be speaking
12:53without even saying words.
12:55He already knew just by my look.
12:57He's been in there.
12:58He's beside me.
12:59He knew my emotions.
13:01Everything.
13:02Everything about me.
13:03And on top of that,
13:06he fought for the world championship.
13:07So he knew exactly.
13:08And he fought over in South Africa.
13:10So when I fought for the world championship,
13:12he told me exactly
13:13everything that was going to happen
13:14over there in England.
13:15What they were going to try to do.
13:16How they were going to try
13:17to get me off my game.
13:18And that's exactly what happened.
13:19Wow.
13:20Seriously.
13:21So I was ready and prepared
13:22and comfortable.
13:24You know, some of the best
13:25trainers right now in the game.
13:26You know, starting with
13:27Hall of Famer and Freddie Rhoades.
13:28Yeah.
13:29Beaumac, Robert Garcia
13:30who's got three fighters on this.
13:31I mean, four fighters
13:32on this card tonight.
13:33I mean, those are
13:34former fighters.
13:35Two of them
13:36who didn't have
13:37the same success
13:38that Robert had
13:39in becoming a world champion.
13:40But they are great teachers
13:41of the game.
13:42Exactly.
13:43Sometimes your calling
13:44is to be a teacher.
13:45It was never to be a fighter.
13:46Nice shot to the body
13:47there from Mercado.
13:48Yeah.
13:49Yeah.
13:50Yeah.
13:51Yeah.
13:52Yeah.
13:53Yeah.
13:54Nice shot to the body
13:56there from Mercado.
14:03You know, the train
14:04probably
14:07passed already
14:08for both these guys.
14:10Both these fighters
14:11tonight.
14:12And what I mean
14:13by the train
14:14is that
14:15you have that window
14:18to really start
14:19to build yourself up
14:20in your career.
14:21You know,
14:22not having
14:23having the proper management yeah you got some wins in your rap but not staying
14:27busy you get rusty you get stale you know both these fighters tonight
14:31although Mikado's having success he still looks rusty you know a lot of a
14:35lot of his technique is off and you know I'm looking for guys that could be
14:44future world championship that's what we looking for we looking for top guys
14:49that look that has it has it all mentally physically emotionally neither
14:55these guys have it and and I'm sorry to say that you know and I don't mean any
15:00disrespect but I'm just saying I'm keeping it 100 for you right now that
15:04ship sailed
15:14but tonight he's on ESPN plus trying to make the best of the opportunity against
15:19Dondrell Haynes who says hey I'm in this fight too
15:22Haynes is starting to get busy with his hands his activity is starting to help
15:26him a little bit but doesn't mean he's winning the round right but he's doing
15:31something different now he's bagging up Mikado and Mikado he's
15:34uncomfortable being pushed back
15:40tonight's main event features Raymond Murataya and last time we saw him was
15:45March 2nd against Joselani Endogeni he had stomach issues that he hid from his
15:51team didn't look as dominant as we've seen him look over the past few years
15:57and nonetheless he came away with a unanimous decision victory in Glendale
16:02Arizona that ended a streak of four consecutive knockouts prior to that he
16:09had a decision victory again against Jair Bantierra and before that a nine
16:13fight knockout streak so he goes on these streaks Tim where he just looks
16:18unbeatable and I expect to see that version tonight because this is a dream
16:22you're in the main event even when it wasn't expected yeah he was on a two
16:26fight streak where he looked like he was could be a top dog and then that
16:30Endogeni fight he looked suspect right so that's what I believe Temple Farmer
16:37and they people they saw they looking at that fight they don't realize that he
16:40was like you said that stomach issues you know and that tells you right there
16:43fighters we go through so much so much so many different things man on a day
16:47we're never 100% inside that ring but when you're going through stomach
16:50issues like that my goodness man you still got to go in there and do your job
16:54the best way you can and he got the dub however I'm expecting the best Muay Thai
16:59tonight because he's gonna have to be because this is farmers again this is
17:02his chance to get himself back into the mix and Tim that's on the heels of him
17:07getting dropped against Diego Torres in that first round out in Lake Tahoe seeing
17:10a lot of people was feeling that like his chin is somewhat suspect and farmer
17:14told us that hey I've been working on my power you know that since I've come
17:18coming back I've got a couple of knockouts he said I'm sitting down more
17:21than my punches I'm working more on my torque he was like you're gonna be
17:25surprised him you know how strong I am he's gonna be surprised as well three
17:29and a half month I mean three and a half year layoff for Tevin Farmer said I
17:33worked on getting my body right my mind right and here we are imagine that
17:39former world champion at four title defenses lost the fifth one that Jojo
17:43Diaz looked lethargic in that fight and yet he says I needed the time off to get
17:47myself right look man you gotta you gotta have a system and at that time he
17:51didn't have a system but when he came into the fighter meetings he had about
17:55ten guys in there and everybody had a job or had a role you know where
17:59somebody was motivating him his nutritionist his physical condition
18:03conditioning trainer his head trainer as well like he has a system and he's
18:07developed it over the last three years this is his chance to showcase that and
18:11beat this young lion again it's all the position himself he does have the name
18:15he's a former world champion imagine having Tevin Farmer if he beats more
18:20tired tonight in the mix that 135 he's a talented talented fighter and he's the
18:25guy not a lot of fighters wanted to fight when he had the belt that other
18:29sagging very hard to fight he makes everyone look bad when he gets in the
18:34ring that's gonna be the challenge for Raymond Murat I in tonight's main
18:37event stepping in for Janabec Alemhanullah who had health issues making weight
18:42fainted and then had to pull out of the fight
18:45nice nice right hand from Murkak yeah it sure was you know and speaking of
18:52Janabec Janabec to me and this is kind of weird surprising unexpected right I
18:57agree disciplined fighter very disciplined but this is the problem when
19:02you're fighting once a year yep this is exactly what happens you gain all this
19:06extra weight throughout it's hard to tear it down right you're not staying
19:10busy not staying be staying sharp and sharpening your tools and this is what
19:14happened a tough way in he misjudged it probably probably or he might be
19:19outgrowing the weight class he might need to move up to 168 pounds and that's
19:23what Mark Riegel was saying in his report at the open of the show is that
19:27is the decision that biggest cleanest and the entire team is mulling right now
19:31our is it in our best interest to move up to 68 as the undefeated WBO champion
19:37and try to push it for a title fight or come back and try to make that weight
19:41and fight Mihai Lovic in the near future things heating up here in the fifth
19:46round between Israel Mercado and Dondrelle Haynes
19:52beautiful papá beautiful beautiful this is the last round just like that
20:10there's no reason to go risk it here yeah I want you to be smart just keep
20:17doing what you're doing jab, feint, straight right
20:21this is your last round so we can sing the victory
20:31last round son
20:33you're doing great putting on a show on TV
20:40that's so cool when things are going your way you're sitting in the corner and you're starting to smile
20:44and your trainer is happy man that's the best feeling in the world
20:48I'm really liking Oscar Negrete as a trainer just the way he handles himself in there
20:53you know you never know what you're gonna get with the former fighter Tim
20:56and he just seemed like a natural in there
20:58right yeah absolutely right
21:01just his demeanor the way he's speaking to his fighter
21:04and he's motivating his charge I mean look at him you know he's still got a ton of energy
21:09he's telling them hey no need to rush you know no need to make no need to push the fight
21:14you got this got this fight in the bag you're dominating this fight
21:17go out there and keep doing the same thing you've done in the last few rounds
21:20oh got a flip right there stepping back
21:22that right hand
21:23yep from Donrel Haynes says hey the fight's not over
21:26Haynes starting to step on the gas now starting to let his hands go out at distance
21:30and he's starting to find his mark
21:34and this this is one of the only sports Tim where you could be winning
21:38everything's fine until it's not
21:40that's the beauty about it that's why I love boxing
21:42you know you can be down 20 20-0 right
21:45you can be down 10 rounds to one
21:47and just one shot that's all it takes
21:49and you can win the fight
21:52Haynes needs to let his hands go here in the last two minutes of the sixth round
21:56because he already did some damage here
21:58against Mercado as he's walking backwards
22:00and Mercado has the hold
22:01after Haynes lands another right hand
22:04I know come on let's go
22:06so why so the question is is why do you believe that Haynes is having success
22:11he's having success because Mercado has slowed down
22:14that's the reason why he's slowed down
22:16he's you know those early rounds he put he invested a lot
22:20punched a lot
22:21you're holding
22:22now he started to feel a little bit of pressure
22:24he slowed down a bit
22:26and that's charging Haynes
22:29and part of it might be he's relaxed
22:31he thinks I got this fight won I just need to stay smart
22:34that too
22:35you start you know instead of fighting to win
22:38you just start fighting not to lose
22:40but Haynes Haynes conserved a lot of energy early on
22:45he didn't do a whole lot of work early on
22:47he let some rounds slip slip away
22:50he's letting heavy shots here
22:52now Mercado with a nice counter
22:55I don't know if that was designed to be that way
22:57however he's having success in this round
22:59and he's gonna need somewhat of a knockout
23:01or needs to knock down to get himself back into this fight
23:05to win on the scorecards
23:07or have a chance to get a draw
23:09oh good right hand
23:12stop
23:13by Mercado
23:14I got you
23:15come on
23:17and it's the last half minute
23:19of this fight between Islael Mercado and Dondrell Haynes
23:28Mercado making Pomona California proud
23:33you know that's where Veronica grew up
23:35no where
23:36Pomona
23:38oh that was over to Shikishai Mosley right?
23:39yep
23:40Pomona
23:4210 seconds
23:46oh y'all got waffle chicken and waffles there
23:48Roscoe's?
23:49Roscoe's that's in South Central and Anaheim
23:51oh shoot
23:53now you made me hungry
23:55I want some gizzards man
23:58six rounds in the book
24:00a good closing round from Dondrell Haynes
24:03the question is will it be enough
24:05and that's the victory away from Islael Mercado here
24:08after four or five really solid rounds
24:11from the fighter out of Montclair California
24:15take a look at what we saw in this fight
24:19yeah we saw a lot of good things from Mercado
24:21I mean look at that nice little counter
24:23just a pull counter right hand over the top
24:25some good straight shots as well
24:27right down the middle
24:28attacking the head and also the body
24:31then he started those looping punches
24:33like I was talking about early on
24:35looping shots like that just coming around the guard
24:39of Haynes
24:41you know you take what your opponent gives you
24:44that's what you do
24:45you know you could tell that Mercado had experience
24:48because he was able to find those openings
24:50he understood
24:51look through uppercut from the ground right there
24:53that was interesting
24:54Piniello thing
24:55yeah
24:57but you know again
25:00good performance by Mercado tonight
25:02good finish by Haynes
25:03if he would have done that a little bit earlier
25:05maybe it would have been a little different
25:06you know on the back end
25:07maybe he would have broke him down a little bit more
25:09however he didn't
25:11I think Mercado won this fight hands down
25:13but you just never know what the judges see
25:16and what they like
25:17all right let's see what the man with the million dollar mustache
25:21has to say
25:22Mark Chanute

25:43Israel Badways Mercado
25:49there was nothing bad about that performance
25:51from Israel Mercado
25:53and his crowd trainer Oscar Negrete in that corner
25:57he earns his 11th professional win
26:00Dondrelle Haynes goes out
