00:00Who are you?
00:02I'm Batman.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo,
00:06and today we're looking at lesser known facts about the Merc with a Mouth.
00:10That's a mouth, not the mouth.
00:12That fact was a freebie.
00:14Nice to see you kept my color scheme when you copied my suit.
00:17Am I like your idol? Never heard of you.
00:24While not afraid to un-alive people,
00:26few would describe Deadpool as a villain nowadays.
00:29When the character first appeared in The New Mutants number 98,
00:32he was more anti than hero.
00:34In that particular issue,
00:36the mysterious Mr. Tolliver,
00:38who turns out to be Tyler Dayspring,
00:40sends Deadpool to collect a bounty on Cable's head.
00:43Give me back my skee-ball token.
00:48Deadpool clashes with the New Mutants
00:50until Domino gets a few lucky shots in his back.
00:52This also marked Domino's debut,
00:54although technically it was copycat in disguise.
00:57Of course, this wouldn't be the last we saw of Deadpool,
01:00but he'd evolved from an antagonist
01:02to somebody we could root for.
01:04You know, historically, mischief has been my mistress,
01:07so I understand.
01:09But I like to think that...
01:11you guys have really rubbed off on me.
01:14That's not to say his villainous side completely went away,
01:17as demonstrated in stories like
01:19Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe.
01:21Number 19.
01:23He wasn't the first Marvel character
01:25to regularly break the fourth wall.
01:27A handful of Marvel characters
01:29are aware of the audience's existence,
01:31including Uatu the Watcher.
01:45If anyone could contend with Wade Wilson
01:47as the most self-aware Marvel character,
01:49it's Jennifer Walters, a.k.a. She-Hulk.
01:52Smashing onto the comic pages in 1979,
01:55She-Hulk made fourth wall breaks one of her staples
01:57long before Deadpool would.
01:59Um, it's true. I am a Hulk.
02:01Uh, and I'm guessing you're not gonna be able to focus
02:03on this fun lawyer show until you know all about that,
02:06so let me get you up to speed.
02:08In the comics, She-Hulk has fought against Deadpool
02:11while also serving as his attorney.
02:13Despite having a quirky power in common,
02:16they've yet to engage with the audience together.
02:18The closest instance is on the variant cover
02:21of She-Hulk number nine,
02:23where she introduces Deadpool.
02:25Also, if She-Hulk beats Deadpool
02:27in Marvel vs. Capcom 3,
02:29he'll note that this fight might have played out differently
02:32if the game came out in 1991.
02:38Deadpool has gone up against his fair share
02:40of bizarre opponents, but it's hard to top
02:42all of the dearly departed ex-presidents
02:44in zombie form.
02:52And now, the zombie apocalypse!
02:55Coinciding with the 2012 U.S. presidential election,
02:58Deadpool took center stage in a Marvel Now comic arc
03:01aptly titled Dead Presidents.
03:03The story sees ex-SHIELD agent Michael Hawthorne
03:05resurrect every president,
03:07from Washington to Reagan.
03:09This backfires as the commanders-in-chief
03:11seek to dismantle the country.
03:13A hero like Captain America can't put the presidents
03:16back in the ground for obvious reasons.
03:18Thus, Deadpool answers the call,
03:20not being afraid to get his hands dirty.
03:22Plus, he's Canadian.
03:28It's Deadpool meets The Walking Dead,
03:30even sharing a co-creator,
03:32Tony Moore.
03:42You might have heard that Thanos has a romantic history
03:44with Lady Death,
03:46a detail from the comics that didn't make it
03:48into Avengers Infinity War.
03:50How could this relationship possibly get any stranger?
03:53By having Deadpool turn it into a love triangle.
03:56Despite essentially being immortal,
03:58Deadpool has had his fair share of brushes with Death.
04:01He was bound to flirt with Lady Death eventually.
04:04It tracks that Deadpool would be drawn to a woman
04:06who represents something he can't fully experience.
04:09As always, our time is short.
04:11I need you to do something for me.
04:14Just name it, sugar skull.
04:16Lady Death seemingly returns Deadpool's affection,
04:19much to Thanos' dismay.
04:21To prevent the two from being together
04:23in the funeral for a freak story arc,
04:25Thanos curses Deadpool with what he deems
04:27a fate worse than death,
04:29never being able to die.
04:36Spider-Man and Wolverine inspired Rob Liefeld
04:38when he co-created Deadpool.
04:40Liefeld also looked to G.I. Joe,
04:42specifically the character of Snake Eyes.
04:45I'm a very big fan.
04:46I love the black.
04:47It's very Johnny Cash.
04:49We can see a resemblance,
04:50with both hiding behind masks
04:52and proving skillful with swords.
04:54Yet it's ironic that these two would share a connection
04:57since Snake Eyes is the silent-but-deadly type,
04:59while Deadpool is constantly cracking one-liners.
05:02I know, right?
05:04Adding to the irony,
05:05Hollywood would get these characters totally backward.
05:08In Snake Eyes G.I. Joe Origins,
05:10the usually silent character
05:12bombards the audience with dialogue.
05:14How did you get your name?
05:16I'll tell you when you get to know me better.
05:18If you live that long.
05:19In X-Men Origins Wolverine,
05:21Wade has his mouth sewn shut,
05:23taking away his ability to speak.
05:25Oh, and in both films,
05:27the characters frequently show their faces.
05:29It's almost as if Hollywood doesn't understand fan bases.
05:33I'll sew your pretty mouth shut.
05:35Oh, I wouldn't do that if I were you.
05:43Given his foul-mouthed reputation,
05:45you'd think there'd be no place for Deadpool on Saturday morning.
05:48No, I am not X-Men material at all.
05:52First off, I'm not even a virgin.
05:55It might surprise you to learn
05:57that he made a few cameos on X-Men The Animated Series.
06:00Well, to a certain degree.
06:02His most prominent appearance was in the Season 2 episode
06:05Whatever It Takes, as Wolverine clashes with Morph.
06:08The shape-shifting mutant takes on the form of several others,
06:11including Deadpool.
06:13But when I'm through with you,
06:15your mind will never recover.
06:19I'll risk it.
06:20That said, this isn't the real Wade Wilson.
06:23Another episode, Deadly Reunions,
06:25features a non-speaking Deadpool in a vision.
06:28He also briefly appears as an illusion during the Phoenix Saga.
06:32While Deadpool himself doesn't interact with any of the characters,
06:35it's safe to assume he exists in this continuity,
06:38with Wolverine and Sabretooth remembering him.
06:41Have you only known betrayal by your friends
06:44and persecution by humanity?
06:49Deadpool and Captain America aren't the last Marvel characters
06:52we'd expect to get along,
06:54but they still don't strike us as compatible.
06:59I smell what you're stepping in, Sensei.
07:02One's an all-American Boy Scout,
07:04the other is a Canadian who prefers red over white and blue.
07:07Despite being opposites,
07:09Deadpool has been a Steve Rogers fanboy since childhood.
07:12Granted, Deadpool's admiration for Cap has been tested over the years,
07:16most notably during the Secret Empire storyline.
07:19At the same time,
07:20the two have proven that they can make a great team,
07:23even forming an unholy trinity with Wolverine
07:25in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
07:27You know, if Ryan Reynolds could bring back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine,
07:31maybe he could get Chris Evans to don the shield one more time.
07:46If you thought the Spider-Verse was wild,
07:48just wait until you meet the various versions of Deadpool.
07:58There have been female variants such as Lady Deadpool,
08:02aka Wanda Wilson.
08:04He's shown off his animal side as Dogpool,
08:06Squirrelpool,
08:07Birdpool,
08:08Pandapool,
08:09and Hello Kitty Deadpool.
08:11Zenpool took the character down a pacifist path,
08:14while Dreadpool found the mercenary at his absolute darkest.
08:17Then again, Evil Deadpool is another strong contender for that title.
08:21We've also seen Deadpool as a kid,
08:23a king,
08:24a wizard,
08:25a zombie head,
08:26and the nephew of President Woodrow Wilson,
08:29Frederick Wheezy Wilson.
08:31Deadpool has even merged with other Marvel characters,
08:33giving us Venompool,
08:35Galactapool,
08:36and Doctor Octapool.
08:37Our favorite has got to be Gwenpool,
08:40who puts a deadly spin on Spider-Gwen.
08:52In Deadpool's eyes,
08:53Dorothy Zbornak isn't just the MVP of Golden Girls.
09:02As far as he's concerned,
09:03the late Bea Arthur was one of the sexiest women to ever live.
09:07Wade Wilson has preserved Arthur's legacy
09:09with the Deadpool Corps naming a spaceship in her honor.
09:12Staying true to his character,
09:14Ryan Reynolds knew he couldn't make a proper Deadpool movie
09:16without a nod to Arthur.
09:18Reynolds personally paid $10,000
09:21so he could sport a Bea Arthur t-shirt in the first film.
09:24The money ultimately went to charity.
09:26The actor also dubbed his two katanas
09:28Bea and Arthur as a tribute.
09:30While Arthur didn't get to see Deadpool hit the silver screen,
09:33her legendary co-star Betty White did.
09:43Number 11.
09:44Why his caption boxes are yellow.
09:46Although you can draw parallels between Deadpool and other characters,
09:50he's truly one of a kind.
09:52Even his speech bubbles are unique.
09:54The comics have regularly distinguished Deadpool's commentary
09:57through solid yellow text boxes.
09:59This emphasizes how nobody else in the Marvel Universe
10:02talks or thinks quite like him.
10:04But that's not the only meta touch.
10:10In one storyline,
10:11Deadpool merges with the villain Madcap,
10:13whose presence is hinted at through white caption boxes.
10:16When pushed to the dark side in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe,
10:19evil voices take over in the form of red boxes.
10:22Little touches like these highlight the fact
10:24that Deadpool is a comic book character,
10:26something he's fully aware of.
10:36Number 10.
10:37The God of Mischief cursed him.
10:39Deadpool is quite the trickster,
10:41and at times, even godlike.
10:43So the idea of him being Loki's son isn't the biggest stretch.
10:47The God of Mischief once convinced Deadpool
10:49that they were flesh and blood,
10:51but this was merely a scheme to steal Thor's hammer.
10:54When the plan goes awry,
10:55Loki curses his fake son with a new face.
11:03You'd think that would be a blessing
11:05given what's hiding behind Wade's mask.
11:07But to his horror,
11:08he now resembles Tom Cruise,
11:10or as it's spelled here,
11:11T-H-O-M-C-R-U-Z.
11:14Maverick will continue to stare Wade in the mirror
11:17until he reconciles with his real father,
11:19who he coincidentally bumps into.
11:21It may be the closest we get to seeing Cruise
11:24as a Marvel character.
11:25Just stay alive!
11:27I'm not going to lose you!
11:28Number 9.
11:29The Donald Glover animated series that never was.
11:32It's no secret that Donald Glover
11:34was an inspiration for Miles Morales.
11:36Childish Gambino also nearly played
11:38a major role in Deadpool's legacy.
11:40Hey.
11:42Hey.
11:46Truth to stare.
11:47Along with his brother Steven,
11:49he started development on a Deadpool animated series
11:51that would have aired on FXX.
11:53An initial 10 episodes were planned
11:55with a 2018 premiere date,
11:57but the series was ultimately scrapped
11:59due to creative differences.
12:01Despite this,
12:02some early animation was finished.
12:04Glover also released a 15-page script
12:06entitled Finale,
12:08in which Deadpool goes to Kenya
12:09and ponders why his show's been cancelled.
12:11Little is known about the other episodes
12:13that were conceived,
12:14although one of them would have involved Taylor Swift.
12:17Marvel apparently wasn't pleased
12:19with the Swift episode,
12:20as Steven Glover called this, quote,
12:22the last straw.
12:23How about telling me the truth?
12:25You can't handle the truth!
12:27Really?
12:28Number 8.
12:29How Deadpool got his name.
12:31I picked both in the Deadpool.
12:32Who'd you pick?
12:33You know, wait about that.
12:35Um...
12:36No.
12:37You did not bet on me to die.
12:40For such a funny character,
12:42Deadpool's name is rooted in tragedy.
12:44In a 1998 comic,
12:46Deadpool opens up to Death
12:47about how he joined the WeaponX program
12:49in hopes of treating his cancer.
12:51Subjected to cruel experiments,
12:53Wade's condition worsened
12:54to the point that he could see Lady Death,
12:56making him want to die faster.
12:58Once Wade's heart is torn out,
13:00only to regrow,
13:01it becomes apparent
13:02that Death won't come to him so easily.
13:04In a way,
13:05Wade Wilson does die that day.
13:07He endures a mental breakdown,
13:09adopting a new name.
13:11The others had been placing bets
13:12on which prisoner would die first,
13:14inspiring him to go by Deadpool.
13:16Lady Death's presence aside,
13:18the 2016 film remains
13:20mostly faithful to this backstory.
13:22Captain Deadpool.
13:26No, just...
13:27Just Deadpool.
13:28Number 7.
13:29A pansexual hero.
13:31Kiss me like you miss me, Red.
13:33Well, come here.
13:35While most of Deadpool's love interests
13:38have been female,
13:39his heart is open to all.
13:41In 2013,
13:42writer Jerry Duggan
13:44described Deadpool as omnisexual,
13:46or pansexual.
13:47Co-creator Fabian Nicieza
13:49didn't put a label on him,
13:50but he confirmed,
13:51quote,
13:52Deadpool is whatever sexual inclination
13:54his brain tells him he is in that moment.
13:56And then the moment passes.
13:58It makes sense that Deadpool
13:59would be drawn to shape-shifting characters
14:01like Shikla and Copycat.
14:03In regards to his on-screen romance with Vanessa,
14:05Brian Reynolds said, quote,
14:07Deadpool isn't in love with Vanessa
14:09just because she's a woman.
14:10He's in love with Vanessa
14:11because he loves her.
14:12Skee-ball token.
14:14Our first date.
14:15Yep.
14:16Reynolds is open to finding Deadpool
14:18a boyfriend as well.
14:19For now,
14:20Deadpool started dating
14:21the non-binary Valentine Vuong
14:23in the comics.
14:24Number 6.
14:25Deadpool is a daddy.
14:27You mean your baby factory's open for business?
14:30Oh my God!
14:32Oh my God!
14:33Wade has procreated a few potential heirs,
14:35some stranger than others.
14:37Patient Zero conceived Susan Mary
14:39using Deadpool and Spider-Man's DNA,
14:41making them co-parents
14:43to the itsy-bitsy murderess.
14:44Deadpool has a slightly better relationship
14:46with Eleanor Ellie Camacho,
14:48who was raised by her mother Carmelita.
14:50After Carmelita dies,
14:52Ellie is sent to live with SHIELD agent Emily Preston.
14:55Wade knows that he isn't exactly parent material.
14:58Hey.
15:00Look at me.
15:02You are not your father.
15:04Nonetheless,
15:05he has expressed genuine affection for Ellie.
15:08Believing that her father can be a better man,
15:10Ellie tries to push him in the right direction
15:12with mixed results.
15:13Ellie also appears in the Marvel 2099 continuity
15:16where she clashes with Warda Wilson,
15:18Deadpool's other daughter who he had with Shikla.
15:21Number 5.
15:22SNL inspired his chimichanga obsession.
15:25Chimichangas are to Deadpool
15:27what carrots are to Bugs Bunny.
15:29This defining characteristic wouldn't surface
15:31until Cable and Deadpool volume 1 number 13,
15:34which was published in 2005.
15:36The basis for this joke can be traced back to 1990,
15:40not long before Deadpool made his debut.
15:42Fabian Nicieza and the late Mark Gruenwald
15:44were fans of an SNL sketch featuring Jimmy Smits
15:47where the cast overpronounced Spanish words.
15:50Antonio Mendoza would like an enchilada.
15:54Although enchiladas come up the most in the sketch,
15:56Nicieza and Gruenwald gravitated towards chimichangas.
15:59When Deadpool first brings up chimichangas in the comic,
16:02he's not that big on the taste.
16:04He just likes saying the word chimichanga,
16:06preferring to eat enchiladas.
16:08This joke would evolve over time,
16:10with chimichangas becoming Deadpool's
16:12go-to Tex-Mex cuisine.
16:14Hi, Deadpool here with an important
16:16public service announcement.
16:17This is your brain.
16:19Actually, it's a chimichanga,
16:21but I'm making a point.
16:22Number 4.
16:23Deathstroke paved the way for Deadpool.
16:25Deadpool is more satirical
16:27than your average comic book vigilante.
16:29As such, it's fitting that he essentially started
16:32as a send-up of another masked mercenary, Deathstroke.
16:35It's not a coincidence that Wade Wilson
16:37and Slade Wilson have a last name in common.
16:40Observing Rob Liefeld's artwork for Deadpool,
16:42Fabian Nicieza couldn't help but notice
16:44a striking resemblance to Deathstroke.
16:46What? I'm not Deadpool.
16:48I thought Deadpool was a good guy.
16:50Why does everybody think I'm Deadpool?
16:51You got them guns!
16:52And a sword.
16:53Since one is from Marvel and the other from DC,
16:56the relation between Deadpool and Deathstroke
16:58can never be officially canonized.
17:00As an in-joke, though,
17:02Wade would be forever bonded to Slade
17:04through the Wilson surname.
17:06Superficial connections aside,
17:08Liefeld firmly argued that Deadpool
17:10isn't a Deathstroke rip-off.
17:12Okay, because I came out, like, way before he did.
17:14Nah, I'm pretty sure you're Deadpool.
17:16Look into the camera and say something inappropriate.
17:18No, I'm not Deadpool.
17:20The real question is whether or not
17:22Death Mask is secretly DC's answer to Deadpool.
17:29Ryan Reynolds was meant to play Deadpool.
17:31And please don't make the super suit green.
17:34Or animated.
17:36So much so that Deadpool referenced the actor
17:38before he was even cast.
17:40Back when Reynolds starred in Blade Trinity,
17:42an executive told him that he'd be an ideal choice
17:44if they ever made a Deadpool movie.
17:46To familiarize him with the character,
17:48the exec sent Reynolds a stack of comics.
17:50The first one Reynolds picked up
17:52was Cable and Deadpool No. 2,
17:54published in 2004.
17:56In the comic, Deadpool says that he looks like
17:58a cross between the Sharpay dog breed
18:00and Ryan Reynolds.
18:02Granted, they spell his name without the Y,
18:04but Reynolds knew it was destiny.
18:06Five years later, Reynolds got to play Wade Wilson.
18:08And another seven years later,
18:10he'd get to do it right.
18:12You know, for a second there, it felt like we were
18:14three mini-Lion robots coming together to form one
18:16super robot.
18:18This is stupid.
18:20Number 2. Fans kept Deadpool alive
18:22and immortal.
18:24Upon hitting the scene, Deadpool was
18:26merely a side character.
18:28Marvel didn't expect him to have much staying power,
18:30let alone one day headline a series.
18:32The character was immediately
18:34well-received by readers, however.
18:36I don't know how to thank you,
18:38but I do know how to hug you.
18:40According to Fabian Nicieza,
18:42the fan mail for The New Mutants
18:44No. 98 rose, quote,
18:46with, quote,
18:52Marvel answered their demands with Deadpool
18:54popping up in multiple comics before becoming
18:56the star of a 1993 miniseries.
18:58By 1997,
19:00there'd be an ongoing Deadpool comic.
19:02Marvel finally realized what they had.
19:04Although, it'd be a while until Hollywood
19:06recognized Deadpool's true potential.
19:08Thankfully, the fan response
19:10to the leaked test footage ensured
19:12Deadpool's immortality on the silver screen.
19:14Oh, hello there.
19:16I bet you're wondering why the red suit.
19:18Well, that's so bad guys can't see me bleep.
19:20Hey!

19:38No. 1. Deadpool didn't
19:40always break the fourth wall.
19:42If there's one character trait we associate
19:44with Deadpool, it's taking a
19:46sledgehammer to the fourth wall.
19:48That said, when it comes
19:50time to licking wounds, there's no place like home.
19:52And I share that home
