00:00Another day, another tragedy on the NT's roads.
00:05A young male exited a bus in Hidden Valley and ran out in front of traffic.
00:14Police saying the man is in a critical condition and lucky to be alive after being struck by a car in Darwin overnight.
00:21It doesn't look like at this point that it will be a life loss.
00:26Incidents like these now becoming far too common.
00:30So far this year, there have been 40 deaths on the NT's roads.
00:34That's already well above the 31 lives lost last year.
00:39Police say alcohol, drugs, using mobile phones, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt are the main causes.
00:46But don't take the risk. Don't take the risk and don't drink and drive.
00:50Because if you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot.
00:52Calls now for the NT government to follow the rest of the country
00:56and ban drivers from drinking alcohol while behind the wheel,
01:00which is currently legal as long as they're under the blood alcohol limit.
01:05It's going to make our roads safer than perhaps the new government of the day needs to look at the laws,
01:10how it can be changed or strengthened.
01:12It's not expressly illegal, but the really important issue there is driver behaviour.
01:17You're an idiot if you were to engage in that type of behaviour.
01:21It's the minister responsible skirting around any commitment to outlaw it
01:25while urging motorists to take personal responsibility for their actions.
01:30It's currently not against the law and what I'm saying
01:33and what I want the community to uphold and take on is don't drink and drive.
01:38Don't put a can of anything between your legs when you go for a drive.
01:42The NT government this morning announced its four year plan
01:45to drive down the number of deaths on the territory's roads.
01:48It's promising more random breath testing and new camera technology
01:52that can detect when motorists are using their mobile phones or not wearing seatbelts.
