00:00We're really excited to be here to launch the Greens plan to save live music.
00:24Now Canberra has this fantastic scene, we're here in Smiths which is one of our great venues
00:29that really builds our local talent. We're with Matriarch, one of our fantastic local
00:33bands and Canberra's got really dedicated fans. But live music is hard for the musicians
00:38at the moment. A lot of musicians can't afford to live here, let alone play here. There have
00:43been a lot of challenges since COVID and things are getting worse. It's time for government
00:47to step in and help. Today we're launching the Greens plan to make our entertainment
00:51precincts work. Music ACT and the sector have been asking for entertainment precincts for
00:56over a decade. We've finally got the law changed for Civic in Gungahlin, but we have to work
01:00with the sector and with young people to get those settings right and to make sure we've
01:03got the noise zones right, the building standards right and all of the other things you need
01:08to make a gig work. We need great public transport so you don't have to drive there, really good
01:12food and drink and a good hospice. We think there's some great initiatives in there and
01:34they will really help bands like Matriarch get out there and keep those music scene dollars
01:41being spent in Canberra rather than going to the other cities like Sydney and far flung.
01:45We've got a great live music scene here and we're really proud to be part of it. I'd just
01:50like to add the Canberra music scene is full of incredibly talented, lovely people and
01:56the majority of them obviously can't make a living out of their music. So anything that
02:02the ACT government can do to support artists as well as venue owners and other music industry
02:10reps would be absolutely fantastic, including incredible venues like Smith's and other small
02:18venues that are so important for bands that are just getting going and getting that sort
02:22of stepping stone and experience so that they can progress through into bigger venues and
02:29pull bigger crowds. Art is an incredibly important, healthy medium for all culture and the more
02:36of it we have of it now. And I'm not saying that just because I'm a musician, it's important.
