00:00These are 10 fantastic Netflix movies in Spanish to watch this year.
00:04Hello, language learners, and welcome back to the channel,
00:06where every week we explore language immersion and storytelling
00:09to help you learn new languages and use them to connect with people and cultures.
00:13Today, we're going to take a look at the list of my top 10 Netflix movies in Spanish.
00:18These are great for picking up and practicing Spanish phrases
00:20and for learning the nuances of culture.
00:22The history, sense of humor, and social dynamics of a country
00:25are all great things to explore through film.
00:27Okay, let's dive into the top 10.
00:30Number 10, La Dictadura Perfecta.
00:32La Dictadura Perfecta is a political satire
00:35that was launched as a comedic critique to the standing Mexican government in 2016.
00:39This movie is very dramatized and funny,
00:41so it presents a light view of social political commentary that anyone can enjoy.
00:45As for language benefits, this is a Mexican movie,
00:47so you'll be learning Mexican Spanish in a range of both formal and informal registers.
00:51And the speaking pace for this movie is moderate to fast,
00:54so it'll be a good language challenge.
00:55Number 9, Nuestros Amantes.
00:58Moving on to pick up some Spain Spanish, we have Nuestros Amantes.
01:02This is a Spanish romantic comedy about two people who meet at a local coffee shop
01:05and start a very cute, playground-like dating relationship.
01:09And then they find out that they have some exes in common.
01:12It's a cutesy love story, and the female lead is played by Michelle Jenner
01:15from one of my favorite series, La Catedral del Mar, so I couldn't skip this one.
01:19The Spanish speaking pace in this movie is mostly moderate,
01:21but gets fast at times, and it switches from formal to informal registers.
01:25So overall, this is a good movie to boost your Spain Spanish all around.
01:28Number 8, Quien Te Cantara.
01:30We continue the tour of Spain with this film that launched in 2018,
01:34featuring the actress who plays Zulema in the hit show, Vis-a-Vis.
01:38If you're a fan of Zulema, you're into music,
01:40or you like films that have a very indie or alternative feel
01:43and give off that Black Mirror vibe, this might be a film for you.
01:46It's about a superstar performer who suffers amnesia and forgets who she is,
01:50and one of her biggest fans has to step in to remind her how to sing,
01:53how to perform, and become the person she once was.
01:56The movie has a slow, almost slurred pace with a very sinister vibe,
02:01so the slow pace is great for managing with the Spanish pace.
02:04The formality is mainly colloquial,
02:05so this should be a good show for picking up some everyday phrases,
02:09and it's not too too fast.
02:10Number 7, El Ciudadano Ilustre.
02:12Now we jump to Argentina for this film launched on Netflix in 2016,
02:17about an author who returns home to Argentina in search of his spark again,
02:21after he burned bright, won a Nobel Prize for his writing,
02:24and then fizzled out and lost his inspiration.
02:26This film has a sarcastic, humorous, and crude vibe to it.
02:31The camerawork is quite unique and makes it feel real
02:33as if you're close to the screen and walking alongside the protagonist.
02:37The movie's pace is very rhythmic and laid-back,
02:39which is great for language learning.
02:41You'll pick up the mostly colloquial Argentinian Spanish phrases,
02:44and should have an easier time managing since this series is a bit slower paced.
02:47Number 6, Quien Ayerro Mata.
02:50Now we bounce back to Spain to see this film that was launched on Netflix in 2019.
02:54It's about a guy who works as a nurse in an elder care home,
02:57and one day the care home gets a new occupant.
03:00And the occupant is none other than a former narco
03:03who was just released from prison,
03:04who's also responsible for the death of someone in the nurse's family.
03:08The nurse has to then battle with the torment of taking care of someone
03:12who's responsible for causing him and his family so much pain,
03:15and the film does a good job of showing you that anguish and torment.
03:18The film has a very sinister and suspenseful feel to it,
03:21and it's got a moderate speaking pace with mostly colloquial Spain Spanish,
03:25so get ready to stockpile your colloquial phrases even more.
03:28Number 5, La Noche de 12 Años.
03:30Now we fly from Spain all the way to Uruguay.
03:33If you like historical fiction, you might be a big fan of this film.
03:36La Noche de 12 Años takes us all the way back to the 1970s and 80s
03:41to the time of dictatorship in Uruguay,
03:43and shares the story of three revolutionaries
03:45who are captured and thrown into prison to stop their movement.
03:49The film shows how the three fight to remain strong and persevere
03:52and remain sane through all the hardship,
03:53and it's a very raw film showing what they have to do
03:56to hold on to their values and sanity.
03:58As for language learning, the Spanish in this film is based in Uruguay,
04:01and it's got a slow to moderate mostly colloquial repertoire,
04:05so this should be good for adding in some Spanish from another country.
04:08Number 4, Roma.
04:09Going over to Mexico, if you're a fan of cinematography,
04:12I think you're going to like this film a ton.
04:15It's shot in black and white and features wide sweeping landscape shots
04:19that make you feel as if you're a fly on the wall
04:22observing the daily life of a Mexican family in the 1970s.
04:26It takes you through all the chaos, calmness, dullness,
04:29violence, betrayal, and redemption,
04:31and other aspects of the daily life of this family
04:34that many of us will go through ourselves.
04:36The best way I can think to describe this film is raw and real.
04:39As for the Spanish, it features Mexican Spanish
04:42and has a mostly colloquial and slow-paced dialogue,
04:45so this film should be a bit easier to follow language-wise.
04:47Number 3, Vivir Dos Veces.
04:49Vivir Dos Veces plays the balance of sentimental, romantic, and dramatic pretty well.
04:55This Spanish film is about a math professor who gets diagnosed with Alzheimer's
04:59and is told he's going to forget about most things,
05:01including the people that are most important to him in his life.
05:04So in his last moments, he goes on a quest to find the love of his life
05:07from his childhood before he forgets her.
05:10The plotline does sound a bit cheesy,
05:11but the execution was done fantastically,
05:14and this was one of my favorite films.
05:15The Spanish in this one is from Spain.
05:17It's got a moderate pace, and it's mostly colloquial.
05:20So this should be another good one for your Spanish daily living phrase bank.
05:23Number 2, Cien Metros.
05:25This is based on the true story of Ramon Arroyo,
05:28who was a normal guy living a good life
05:30until suddenly his body started to fail him,
05:33and he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
05:35The doctors told him that he would not be able to walk
05:38100 meters in just a year.
05:40So he decides instead to run an Iron Man to regain control of his life.
05:44This is one of those super inspirational
05:46and at times comedic films
05:47that will get you out of any motivation route that you're in.
05:49It features Spain Spanish, has a mostly colloquial register,
05:53and alternates between moderate to fast speaking pace
05:56for a good language challenge.
05:58And finally, at number 1, we have El Hoyo.
06:01El Hoyo is a fantastic film,
06:04especially if you're interested in cinematography or human psychology.
06:08It tells the story of a group of people in a futuristic prison-like space
06:12with many levels stacked on top of each other.
06:14And each level has a squarish opening in the middle of the room
06:17where every day a platform full of food
06:20gets sent from the top floor all the way to the bottom floor.
06:23Those at the top floors can eat just what they need
06:26and save food for those at the bottom
06:28or they can eat their fill and let those at the bottom starve.
06:30And what follows is an intriguing display of human psychology
06:35and a ton of chaos.
06:36This film is a must-watch in my opinion,
06:39but it does get a bit gory at times.
06:41It's a Spanish film with a mostly colloquial register
06:44and it's got a moderate speaking pace.
06:46So overall, you should learn some good colloquial Spanish phrases
06:49to pick up and add to your repertoire.
06:51I hope you enjoyed the video
06:52and got some great films to go watch and improve your Spanish with.
