National Trust archaeologist James Brown explains the dig at Petworth House
Transcript
00:00Hi I'm James Brown, National Trust Archaeologist and today we're at Petworth House where we've got
00:05an archaeology dig going on looking for the north wing that Henry VIII would have recognised when he
00:10visited the site and quite obviously there's a lot of activity in the trench at the moment.
00:16Behind me, just over to the side, it's covered in a bit of loose soil because we're going down
00:21but what you're looking at there, you can see potentially the orange, it's a bit difficult to
00:25see lots of different shades of brown but we're looking at the wall that would have been part of
00:30that north wing so where I'm kind of crouched here I would be inside the wing when Henry VIII
00:36was visiting, beyond that we're outside and the volunteers have found that wall, we've taken the
00:41soil down further and are starting to kind of bring up some lovely items like this where we've
00:45actually got some of the architectural work from the north wing actually showing how elaborate
00:51some of the rooms and the building was. So we're here until the 31st of July and we've got
01:00daily tours and various activities going on so really encourage people to come down
01:05and help us uncover the past of Petworth.
