00:00Well, it looks like we need more from you. We're getting instructions all the time.
00:04It's time to break the ball, break clean, defend yourselves at all times.
00:07Best of luck to you all. Touch gloves.
00:30As to what path he's on, I'll be world champion before I'm 22.
00:34That is what he said coming into this.
00:37Wants to be the youngest post-war British fighter to have an out-of-world title.
00:41And of course, he can have a word with the man who holds that record at the moment,
00:44because Prince Nassir was in the building.
00:46But this is something of an unknown quantity, isn't it?
00:50You're taking on a South American, and there's no such thing as a weak South American, really, is there?
00:55No, especially Colombians. Typically, they're hard punchers.
00:58Does anyone remember British Prescott coming over and cleaning out Amir Khan when he wasn't meant to?
01:03But there's a lot to like about Barney Smith.
01:06Big statement, and wanting to be a world champion before he's 22, I still think there's a lot to do.
01:11But this is the first time he's fought an opponent with a winning record,
01:14and I think this is when we're going to start to see the best of Royce and Barney Smith.
01:20Barajas.
01:22He too is only 23 years of age, so still a fledgling career of his own.
01:29First fight of 2024, first time he's been out of South America as well,
01:35and the opposition, as you would expect this early on in his career, is nothing significant.
01:43So, it's a learning process for him, and indeed us, as to how good he is.
01:51Again, it's another fight, just credit to the card and the promoter for putting it on,
01:55but it's another fight where it's probably the toughest fight for both guys.
02:03With Barney Smith, there's a lot of people saying a lot of good things about him.
02:07I think he's got a great team, and Ben Davidson, Barney Smith, and Lee Wiley,
02:11they really study their opponents well.
02:15And this kid, I think, we'll see it in the future, but I do think there's a little bit of stardust with him.
02:23Yeah, his coach, he said, yeah, he's a quick KO, good for building records, good.
02:31Good shot that was by Sugar Boy, but he said, in terms of his development,
02:36he can't be getting rounds in.
02:39That was a beautiful shot to the body there, Tim, and I think that Baraka definitely felt it.
02:43Lovely.
02:44He felt that as well.
02:45Yeah.
02:52Well, that might force a little bit of a rethink from the Colombian.
02:57He's taken some very, very good shots in this opening round here.
03:09He's got the reach advantage.
03:12That's Smith.
03:17Yeah, you can even tell that when you're looking at him.
03:19Baraka's arms look extremely short.
03:21I had a bit of an issue with that myself, and it's important to get the feet right to get you in the range.
03:27Good ending round then for Sugar Boy.
03:39Looks like the spray tan guy, Will, just come straight to your house.
03:42How's it going with the chairman?
03:43Good shot, Sir Rupert.
03:46Big news, he's confirmed profits are up again.
03:49You know, Nationwide have shared their profits with nearly four million of their members.
03:53We can't compete with that.
03:54But shouldn't we try and do something similar first?
03:56Shareholders are the beating heart of this bank. Wedge me.
04:00What's the matter? Lost your balls?
04:03This year, we gave £100 to every eligible member through our fairer share payment.
04:07Nationwide, a good way to bank.
04:33He's been talking about the environment that he's in.
04:37We mentioned Ben Davidson as his coach, but he said the progress is due to the environment,
04:43the habits that he observes from a distance, from all those around him.
04:47Again, that straight left hand, again, primed, driven through that defence of Baraka's.
04:53Falling a bit short that time.
04:58Yeah, he's looking for that shot now, Barney Smith.
05:02Barney Smith, he controls the distance really well.
05:16It's something I've liked about him throughout his whole career.
05:18He's never too far out of range or he's never too close.
05:22Really, really good distance control.
05:25Boxing is very much part of his DNA from the time he was growing up.
05:30He said he used to love sitting there watching the likes of Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera.
05:37Loved Sugar Ray Leonard, all the old fights.
05:40So he's learnt of some of the real legends of the ring.
05:43That was what stirred the interest.
05:45His dad, of course, used to box as well.
05:49You mentioned Eric Morales. There's a bit of a look of Eric Morales.
05:52Barney Smith, isn't there?
05:53Yeah.
05:55But if he achieves half of what Morales did.
05:57Yeah, if he does that, then he'll be a special boy.
06:05But here in the big arena, under the lights, in front of the TV cameras, it's a good opening two rounds so far.
06:15He's fantastic and he shows great maturity.
06:19So far here, Morrison and Barney Smith.
06:23It's the Colombian, Barajas, who's been forced to have a little bit of a rethink.
06:28He doesn't want to stay too close in range.
06:33Yeah, Barajas is having a go.
06:36He's being brave, but it's just difficult when you're fighting someone like Barney Smith.
06:41The distance control is good, the shot selection is good, the range is good.
06:45It's always going to be a hard night work.
06:50And in another time and another place, we could have been seeing Barney Smith in the Olympic Games.
06:55He was going to be part of the Olympic team until, of course, COVID hit and then he turned pro.
07:02But it's a comfortable and measured display again here.
07:06It's a mature display, isn't it?
07:08Yeah, I think he took a headbutt to the chin.
07:11Oh, he's caught under his eye.
07:18Well, it's a good shot.
07:19That is under the eye, not over the top of it.
07:21I think that may be two cuts, actually.
07:2210% goes to three.
07:24It's all a bit much.
07:25Can you give me a hug?
07:54Keep the crowds happy and fast with new EETV.
07:58Search across live and on demand in one place.
08:02New EETV is here.
08:23Some of the action from the previous round, but we don't see the clash of heads.
08:29There it is.
08:31Yeah, and he's got two cuts, Barney Smith.
08:33He's one above his eye and one under his eye.
08:35It happened at the end of the round, so I think you have to give a little bit of a bye ball to the cup man and how slow he was getting in.
08:42But, yeah, you should be ready at all times.
08:45That was way too long for me.
08:50Oh, lovely shot.
08:52Well, that is a way to come back.
08:54And now maybe he's got this feeling here, but he doesn't want any disasters.
09:01The blood, as we said, was pouring from that cup in a very, very difficult position right above the island.
09:12He wants to get this job done and done quick.
09:18Fans are good as well from Barney Smith.
09:22Just trying to tease Barakas into throwing something.
09:29But I think that cut, it's not too dangerous.
09:32It's not too bad.
09:33It's above the eye, which is a little bit of a concern, but I think he'll be OK.
09:37But he'll not want this to go the distance now and allow that cut to worsen.
09:43He's a young kid.
09:44He wants to be fighting as regularly as possible.
09:46He doesn't want to have issues with that going forward in the future as well.
09:49So I think he'd be looking to put the foot on the gas here now and possibly get rid.
09:55Yeah, the strength and the growth coming from the continuous pressure and effort that he's going to have to put in here.
10:14Only three rounds into the fight here now.
10:16But what a leg from Barakas.
10:19I mean, you could easily be frustrated by someone like Barney Smith, but Barakas hasn't allowed himself to do that.
10:24He's still trying to box the orders.
10:28He's just not having too much success here.
10:32Yeah, because I've got to say what you thought you might see when they came back out for the start of this third round is Barakas looking to try and swarm all over him and try and worsen that cut.
10:44But it's over his eye.
10:45But he's not done that.
10:48It's a conservative approach.
10:51That's a lovely shot just right in the solar plexus there from Barney Smith.
10:55There's been a few of them landed pretty clean.
10:57So Barakas is clearly a tough guy.
11:00And again, Smith with the speed, the accuracy to go with it.
11:04There's not a lot that he's throwing that isn't landing.
11:09Oh, and it's a nice shot as well.
11:10And you see it's moving the feet back as he does it.
11:13As the feet stop, he plants a shot and it's a good shot.
11:17As an athlete, my skin goes through a lot, so it gets dry, and I've tried everything.
11:23Even the restrooms have been dry.
11:25Even the rooms that I've tried to work outside, look.
11:28There's not a lot that's gone through that has not been dry because you've got the pressure.
11:32As an athlete, my skin goes through a lot, so it gets dry, and I've tried everything,
11:45even the really fancy creams, but this gel works for me, Olay Regenerous Cream.
11:50It makes my skin feel so hydrated and firmer.
11:55Look at that.
11:57I love it.
11:58And when paired with Retinol 24 Max at night, 100% of women saw improvement to visible signs
12:04of skin aging.
12:05With Olay, your skin is the proof.
12:07We'll have a look at that Clash of Heads again.
12:15Here it is.
12:18It may be the first time as well that Barney Smith's had a deal with a cut in his career,
12:28which we'll learn a little bit more about him and just how he deals with it.
12:32He stays calm and relaxed.
12:34Yeah.
12:35Well, doesn't rush things after the cut, remains composed.
12:39And even the moment that he went back in to take a seat in the corner after that cut came,
12:44his body language did not show somebody that was getting stressed at what had just happened.
12:51He was just deep breathing, remaining calm and in control, and he's kept, as you said,
12:56to the orders.
12:57Yeah.
12:58The harder the conflict, as he finds out throughout his career, the more glorious the triumph.
13:11And he's got a live opponent here tonight.
13:15He's not taking any chances, and as we said, he's not taken on too many punches.
13:20Barakas has been, surprisingly, quite reticent at times.
13:25Yeah, he's just switched here to southpaw momentarily, Barakas.
13:30But if you're looking at the battle of the feet here, southpaw against orthodox, Barakas
13:34is actually doing quite well in keeping his left foot outside.
13:37Barney Smith's lead foot.
13:39But Barney, I think, is comfortable in allowing him to do that.
13:43He's controlling the distance, and he's trying to land that backhand just as Barakas comes in.
13:55Again, we get to the midway point in the round, and the more it goes on, the more confident
14:14you feel that Smith will feel that he's again able to take pretty much everything that's
14:20coming from Barakas.
14:22Barakas having a go there.
14:24A little bit of success in this round so far.
14:27That was better.
14:28Trying to work the hook to the body there, Barakas, which was a bit of a switch.
14:33And what he's doing as well, Barakas, just as Barney Smith kind of goes back towards
14:38the ropes, he's in the orthodox stance, and as he punches, he comes forward, not square,
14:43but into the southpaw stance, and it just gets him a little bit closer.
14:55Good shot from Barakas, nice counter right hand.
15:02It's a good round so far from Barakas, yeah.
15:04He is just beginning to come out of his shell a little bit more.
15:14And maybe for the first time, a little bit of a fatigue beginning to show.
15:20I think Barakas knows that as well, that's why he's putting the pressure on.
15:25Ooh, he took a brutal shot, and he came back, landed a good right hand to the side of the head,
15:31but he took some good shots in that round, and that was definitely Barakas' round.
15:36Yeah, good round for Barakas.
15:38I think that Barney Smith maybe just had a round off, he was controlling things pretty
15:43easily from a distance, and I'm hoping he just had a round off and he improves more
15:49the next round, but that was a good round from Barakas, and I think he'll be looking
15:54more the same in the next round.
15:56It'll be interesting to see how he starts.
15:58I imagine he's going to start on the front foot.
16:00That's important for Barney Smith to really answer.
16:03Good job.
16:13Hey, listen.
16:14Listen, boy.
16:15Get over there.
16:17Get over there.
16:24Stick it down.
16:25Well, five.
16:27Well, coming into round five, and a few deep breaths there.
16:31Barakas overall so far in.
16:35The previous four has landed.
16:37Only 19 shots to 63 for Barney Smith.
16:43But this maybe isn't where Smith wants to be, because if Barakas, you feel, really does
16:49want to scrap getting him on the ropes is the best place he feels he's going to get
16:52his success.
16:53Yeah, and that is where he's going to get most of his success, when Barney Smith is
16:58staying on the ropes, but he looks to be quite comfortable on the ropes, but it's advisable
17:05against someone like Barakas just to move your feet.
17:08Don't stay there for too long and clean the center of the ring again.
17:14Well, the laces are being done up.
17:21And that certainly didn't favor Barakas, because he was on the front foot at that moment
17:25when he was called to a halt.
17:29Push!
17:41Yeah, I think we need to see more of this here from Barney Smith.
17:44Just punching from distance, not allowing Barakas to get too close.
17:48His one-two right down the pipe, it's a lovely combination.
17:54And it lands quite often.
17:56The variants have been good as well, but when he allows Barakas to get close, that's when
17:59he has a bit of success.
18:00But that's nice from Barney Smith.
18:01It is.
18:02It's good, clean work from Barney Smith.
18:04And it's right back to what he was doing for the opening round and a half, two rounds,
18:09before he had that head clash.
18:11And you could see that in the previous round, Barakas coming out of his shell a little bit.
18:17There's a little bit of blood beginning to appear on his face now.
18:27Push!
18:33And he's actually quite comfortable.
18:34He is quite comfortable, Barney Smith, when his back's to the ropes.
18:37But again, it's probably the only time that Barakas can get any success.
18:41So I don't really see too much of a point of being there.
18:44If you can control this fight from the centre of the ring, which Barney Smith can certainly do,
18:49I think then that's the way to do it.
18:56And it looks like Barakas as well has taken a little bit of a breather,
19:01as Smith goes to the body and then tries to whip that hook underneath Barakas' defence
19:06as he gets into a more closer quarter.
19:11Did well to elude those, Barakas.
19:13Yeah, I think one of them body shots may have just hurt Barakas, you know.
19:21He's looking for it again, Barney Smith.
19:24Yeah, there he is.
19:26Great combination work.
19:28Certainly more artistry and finesse about the work of Smith.
19:37What you've got to do now, though, if you're Barney Smith and you have hurt him with a body shot,
19:41is you've got to disguise the shot.
19:43Barakas knows it's coming.
19:44He'd be looking to defend it.
19:46It's important to disguise that shot and just land it as sweet as you can.
19:54Better at that from Barney Smith.
20:01Coming up later on, we have Dennis McCann against Yannick Belluta.
20:09The rematch from that epic fight at the York Hall from a year ago.
20:15Over here, there's still a lot of work in this fight.
20:20Yeah, it was a much better round from Barney Smith.
20:22Barakas had a good previous round.
20:24It was important that Barney Smith just didn't let Barakas get any more momentum
20:29and just shut that down.
20:31And he did that.
20:32And I think he hurt Barakas with one or two body shots as well.
20:37Corners, 10 seconds.
20:40Well, he's known pretty much nothing but success in his career
20:44since a 12-year-old when he first won his national title.
20:49And the golds and the euros and the 37 fights fighting for England,
20:54which he won 36.
20:55Everything has gone pretty much according to plan.
21:00The professional wrestler, Yannick Belluta,
21:04pretty much according to plan.
21:07The professional ranks will throw up a few curveballs.
21:12And having to deal with that cut early on,
21:14and there you can see a quick shot to the body.
21:16It was a little bit low, and Barakas has been warned.
21:20Here we go.
21:21Barney Smith, a little bit of stick about how long it took him to get into the ring
21:24when the cut happened, but he's done a great job on it so far
21:28that it almost looks like he doesn't have a cut anymore.
21:35He's got it.
21:46It varies the shots really well, Barney Smith.
21:48The shot selection is fantastic.
21:51Oh, lovely uppercut.
21:55Beautifully delivered.
21:57Calibrated to perfection.
21:59Delivered with authority.
22:01Landed with some real hurt.
22:11But the confidence that may have slightly just
22:15ebbed away from him in that round after the cut
22:21when Barakas came back, it's right back now.
22:25And Barakas again is the one
22:28who is having to basically readjust what he's doing here
22:34because he's had little success for the last round and a half.
22:39To be able to take a round off like Barney Smith did a couple of rounds ago,
22:43the round that Barakas won,
22:45it shows a great deal of maturity to just kind of get back to your boxing.
22:50Have a round off, have a bit of a breather,
22:52don't get nailed too much, possibly lose a round,
22:55but he's won everything else since.
22:58As he went in for that shot to the body,
23:00he was very, very swift to get out of where the counter was coming.
23:04The reflex is very, very swift indeed.
23:12Again, being told to keep it up.
23:16That's a nice shot from Barakas.
23:22I think Barney Smith just done the right thing there
23:24and tied him up after it,
23:25rather than trying to stay on the ropes and counter.
23:32And just wanted to shorten it a little there.
23:34Final 10 seconds of round six.
23:36But again, Barakas,
23:38he's got a lot of confidence in himself.
23:40He's got a lot of confidence in himself.
23:42Final 10 seconds of round six.
23:44But again, it's a round that he has done enough to consider won.
23:52Good shot there from Barakas just to finish the round.
24:01I think both guys are probably feeling this a little bit
24:03and just having a look at the corners as they're sitting down.
24:06Hasn't really, though, put any sustained pressure on Smith.
24:13No, he hasn't.
24:14But I think that we may see a change.
24:16Who knows?
24:17I think he needs to.
24:18He's well behind in the fight.
24:20We've both given him our own.
24:23But he wants to win this fight.
24:25I think there needs to be more output from Barakas.
24:30Unbeaten.
24:31Remember the Colombian.
24:36Beautiful counter shot.
24:38Just a step back.
24:39And look at the length on that left arm.
24:42Beautiful shot.
24:50Round seven.
24:58And again, you talked about the maturity of the performance
25:03in everything that he has done so far.
25:05He's timed everything well.
25:07There's been nothing gung-ho about this.
25:10It's almost as if he's been expecting it may go long.
25:14Yeah.
25:15Look, he's probably a fighter who's more mature than his years.
25:20And the gym that he's in, it's full of quality fighters,
25:23none other than AJ in the gym.
25:25I mean, these kids can be learned a lot
25:27when you have a superstar like that in your gym.
25:29Yeah, that's what he said.
25:30We were talking about the environment.
25:32Of course, his housemate used to be Josh Taylor as well.
25:35So, you know, he's had plenty to look up to.
25:40And what a fighter Josh Taylor was, is still.
25:50But he's got one more round after this to manage
25:55to take away the vacant WBO youth title.
26:02And Barakas, really at this stage of the fight,
26:05has got to realize that he needs to do something.
26:09He's trying, he's having a go here.
26:11And you've got to be impressed by that.
26:13Both guys are actually trying the same shot quite a lot,
26:16the counter backhand.
26:18Barney Smith is having more success with it
26:21throughout the fight.
26:22But it has landed a few times here for Barakas.
26:25And he's having a good round here so far.
26:31Again, Smith going back to the craft of the technique
26:36that he has got in such abundance.
26:48And again, you can see as he's getting his head in the air,
26:51referees stepping in to separate.
26:54Dangerous position to be in.
27:12You see Barakas, he's just kind of rushing a little bit.
27:15He's got them kind of short hands.
27:18And like I said earlier on,
27:19it was an issue that I had, short arms, sorry.
27:21It was an issue that I had in my career.
27:23But when he has Barney Smith on the ropes,
27:26the shots, it's almost like he's thrown one or two good ones
27:30and then he rushes the rest of them.
27:33I think he could try and be a little bit more precise
27:35just when he has Barney Smith in that position.
27:44But he's having a go here.
27:46Yeah, realizes that he's going to have to end this on his terms
27:52because playing to the final whistle,
27:54there's only going to be one outcome.
27:57Now that was arguably another round for Barakas.
28:00Yeah, absolutely.
28:01I think, I mean, there was a fight earlier on the night
28:04that was a lot closer than I had it.
28:05So who knows what the judges are seeing here.
28:07But I've definitely been able to give Barakas two rounds
28:11in an eight-round fight.
28:14We've a round to go here.
28:18Yeah, so let's see what happens.
28:19I think Barakas is going to be really aggressive
28:21and it's important that Barney Smith
28:24just doesn't allow him to dictate things.
28:27Well, there is Baluta in the dressing room.
28:30Looks relatively comfortable in his saran suits.
28:33Yeah, he's a character.
28:34He loves to fight.
28:35And a quality, quality fighter as well.
28:37With some big wins.
28:38This kid wasn't meant to do anything in his career, you know,
28:40but he's beaten some big names.
28:42It's a poor play too.
28:51Here we go then.
28:52The eighth and the final round.
28:54We believe that Royston Barney Smith
28:58is leading here quite comfortably.
29:02Which means Barakas is going to come out
29:05and he's got to start firing.
29:06He's got to start firing big
29:08in the hope that something catches.
29:11But for Smith, he's just got to maintain
29:16the composure and the diligence
29:18that he has shown throughout the fight so far.
29:21He doesn't need to be drawn into a war.
29:23No, he doesn't.
29:24He needs to box from a distance.
29:26And when he gets onto the roof like he is now,
29:28he just needs to move off.
29:30Claim the center of the ring again.
29:32He's got to be careful here
29:33because I've given Barakas two rounds so far.
29:35If we give him this round, that's three rounds
29:37in an eight round fight.
29:39A judge may have given him four rounds apiece.
29:42Who knows?
29:43But again, I do have Barney Smith in control
29:46and leading the fight.
29:47And that was a lovely lead uppercut.
29:49But he just needs to do more of that.
29:50Box from a distance.
29:52And not allow Barakas to get too close.
29:54And that's when he's having a success.
30:01I'm just looking at the corner again.
30:03They're telling him to move off the ropes.
30:05Not just lie about there.
30:08Sometimes you can be comfortable on the ropes.
30:10You think you're comfortable on the ropes.
30:11But even if shots aren't landing clean,
30:14it may look like Barakas is being busy.
30:16And that may be enough for a judge to give him the round.
30:21The blood just beginning to drizzle from that cut.
30:25Again, when he gets in a close quarter,
30:27he tries to unload work punches to Smith's body.
30:31But again, the defense is good enough to
30:35act as a barrier for those.
30:37But he's trying to rough him up a bit in this last round.
30:41He's got just over a minute to control things here.
30:46Just a little center with Barakas,
30:48the one that was trying to get his hands free.
30:50And Barney Smith was the one that was keen to hang on.
30:55And that's where he doesn't need to be.
30:56That's stuff that he's doing on the ropes.
30:57A little defensively, he's pretty sound when he boxes off the ropes.
31:01It just gives Barakas a chance.
31:07Back to try to keep him at the end of those long arms.
31:13And if he does, then punches like that from Barakas
31:16are going to fall short.
31:25He's having another OK round here, Barakas,
31:27which some judges may give him it.
31:30The fact that he's on the front foot,
31:32the fact that the output's greater here in this round
31:35than Barney Smith's.
31:41Good body shot there and a good right hand
31:43as well over the top from Barakas.
31:45Well, to be fair, this looks like it is a Barakas round.
31:49And if you add the last one in there, that's two.
31:52So it could have been given two or three.
31:54So maybe this might end up being a little bit closer.
31:57I mean, you would imagine that Smith has done it.
31:59But it was a good conclusion to those last two rounds for Barakas.
32:04I think he's probably done enough to take.
32:06There's an argument.
32:07Yeah, I think so.
32:08I've given Barakas three rounds.
32:10But in an eight-round fight, that's not enough.
32:14In my book, I've given Barney Smith five rounds of three.
32:19We'll see. We'll see what the judges say.
32:21I still think that Barney Smith, you know,
32:23clearly done enough to win the fight.
32:30But this is a fight that will improve.
32:32Barney Smith, he was in against a good opponent,
32:34a strong opponent who was here to win.
32:37He had to deal with a cut as well.
32:39Probably the first time in his career that that's happened.
32:42And again, there was really good signs of maturity throughout the fight.
32:45But just as the fight went on,
32:47I think he just stayed on the ropes for that little bit,
32:49that second too long.
32:52And that was my only concern.
32:53But for me, I have Barney Smith winning this fight.
32:55Here's the stats.
32:57Whoa, the punches landed.
33:00The punches landed.
33:01I mean, there's a big difference there.
33:04A big differential.
33:05But again, like we said,
33:07it doesn't always tell the full story of the fight.
33:09And I do have Barney Smith as the winner.
33:12But that was a good fight and a good learning fight for him.
33:20So just waiting for the scorecards to be passed up.
33:25The belt.
33:26Yes, remember the WBO championship,
33:29the super featherweight championship.
33:38And he'll be more aware of that in the future.
33:40When you look back at this fight,
33:42watch how the head collision happened.
33:45You learn from those things, don't you?
33:47Absolutely.
33:48I mean, in terms of his career,
33:50he's a kid.
33:52He's still an unproven fighter.
33:54There's still a long way to go,
33:56but there is a bit of quality with Barney Smith.
33:59I think he's with a great team as well.
34:01And this is a fight for me
34:03that'll certainly help him improve as a fighter.
34:07I think we are just about ready then
34:09for the official scorecards.
34:17Ladies and gentlemen, after eight rounds of boxing,
34:20we go to the judges' scorecards.
34:24Judge Nerman Androvich scores it 79 to 73.
34:29And both judges, Michael Alexander and Amar Saqrawi
34:34score it the same, 78 to 74.
34:38All in favor of your winner by unanimous decision,
34:43still undefeated,
34:45and now the WBO Youth Super Featherweight Champion,
34:51Sugar Boy Roy!
34:54Ruston Barney Smith!
35:24We can't hop here.
