00:00Who are you, and how did you find me?
00:07I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you.
00:11But may I just say...
00:14I...
00:30This form of English sounds quite fancy and old-fashioned, doesn't it?
00:33But actually, it's a form of Early Modern English,
00:37which is the form of English used by writers such as Shakespeare.
00:40In this sentence, the word know is used in the present tense,
00:44but it is turned negative with not,
00:46which is commonly placed after the verb in Early Modern English.
00:50The phrase I know not means I do not know.
00:54Now we have so much more to learn in today's lesson,
00:57and a special announcement coming up in just a little bit
01:00that you won't want to miss.
01:02But before we get into any of that,
01:04I want to let you know that if you are new to our English with TV series,
01:07every single week we make lessons just like this one
01:09that help you to understand fast-speaking natives
01:12without getting lost, without missing the jokes,
01:15and without subtitles.
01:18So join our community of 7 million subscribers
01:22by hitting that subscribe button and the bell down below,
01:24and you won't miss a single new lesson on here.
01:55Who are you, and how did you find me?
02:05Aha.
02:07Who are you, and how did you find me?
02:12I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you,
02:19but may I just say,
02:22hi.
02:27How you doing?
02:28The name's Flynn Rider.
02:31How's your day going, huh?
02:34Who else knows my location, Flynn Rider?
02:38All right, Blondie.
02:39Rapunzel.
02:40Gesundheit. Here's the deal.
02:42I was in a situation, gallivanting through the forest.
02:45I came across your tower, and the...
02:47Oh, oh no.
02:49Where is my satchel?
02:50I've hidden it.
02:51Somewhere you'll never find it.
02:56It's in that pot, isn't it?
03:20Where is my satchel?
03:21I've hidden it.
03:22Somewhere you'll never find it.
03:50I'm not sure this campground is family friendly.
03:59All camping is pointless.
04:01You drive hundreds of miles to shower and sleep
04:03in a place with no bathroom or bed.
04:06Who are you, and how did you find me?
04:20Hi.
04:21How you doing?
04:50How you doing?
05:16All right, Blondie.
05:21Depending on your tone and relationship with the person,
05:23this can be used as an affectionate nickname
05:25or simply a way to point out this physical characteristic.
05:29Here's a funny example from Friends.
05:31Okay, season's greetings and everything, but still.
05:33Bite me, Blondie.
05:37So, I know how frustrating it can be for you
05:39when you struggle to understand fast-speaking natives,
05:43especially when we use more specific expressions
05:45such as pointless or Blondie,
05:47or maybe when we cut and connect our speech,
05:50just like how Flynn and Joey say,
05:52how you doing?
05:53And it's really common for learners
05:55to get stuck in their learning
05:56because they don't understand how all these collocations
05:59are actually used in real life.
06:01Do you ever have this problem?
06:03If so, I can say that there's nothing wrong with you personally.
06:07What's actually wrong is the way teachers and schools
06:10have been explaining the English language out there.
06:13Now, I've spoken with thousands of learners
06:15from all around the globe, just like you,
06:18and I know how much it hurts to study for years
06:20with ineffective methods
06:22and still not have the fluent, confident English
06:25that you desire.
06:27And then to keep missing those important opportunities in life
06:30because you can't quite speak English confidently just yet.
06:34And that is exactly why we created
06:36the Fluent with Friends course and the Real Life app.
06:39Now, that's the only place online where anytime, anywhere,
06:43you can just press a button and instantly connect
06:45to another English speaker in another part of the world
06:48to have a conversation and practice speaking together.
06:52Just imagine, what would it be like if a month from now,
06:56you could feel a bit more confident
06:58having a conversation in English?
07:00And what would it be like if this time next year,
07:02you could get a job where you use your English every single day
07:05or even travel internationally
07:07without worrying about being stuck in awkward situations?

09:05Now, let's get back to learning with Flynn and Rapunzel.
09:35Gesundheit!
10:05Let's get started.
10:35Okay, okay, look, see, the thing is,
10:38we're not going to fight you guys.
10:42Well, then here's the deal.
10:44You won't have to.
10:45See, we're not going to fight you guys.
10:48We're not going to fight you guys.
10:50We're not going to fight you guys.
10:52We're not going to fight you guys.
10:54We're not going to fight you guys.
10:56We're not going to fight you guys.
10:58We're not going to fight you guys.
11:00We're not going to fight you guys.
11:02We're not going to fight you guys.
11:04You won't have to.
11:05So long as you never, ever show your faces in this coffee house ever again.
11:35Hold.
11:36Oh, no.
11:37Where is my satchel?
12:05Pint.
12:06Pint.
12:07Fountain.
12:08Fountain.
12:09Next, the I sound in it is reduced to a schwa sound.
12:13Uh.
12:14The T at the end of it is a glottal T,
12:16which means we don't pronounce a full T.
12:18Rather, we cut off the sound at the back of the throat.
12:21It.
12:22It.
12:23It.
12:24Some other examples are...
12:26Hat.
12:27Hat.
12:28Bit.
12:29Bit.
12:30Cut.
12:31Cut.
12:32As a result, the two words isn't and it are linked together to sound like isn't it?
12:38Let's listen again.
13:03What?
13:04Sell it.
13:05No.
13:06Listen, the only thing I want to do with your hair is to get out of it.
13:09Literally.
13:10Wait.
13:11You don't want my hair?
13:14Why on earth would I want your hair?
13:16Look, I was being chased.
13:17I saw a tower.
13:18I climbed it.
13:19End of story.
13:20You're telling the truth?
13:22Yes.
13:23Hmm.
13:25Listen, the only thing I want to do with your hair is to get out of it.
13:32So here we have several great examples of the American T.
13:35This usually happens when we have a T between two vowel sounds,
13:38even if they are in different words.
13:40For example, before we heard Rapunzel say cut it.
13:44Listen to how she said that.
13:46To cut it?
13:48So how do you think Flynn said this?
13:54Let's listen again.
14:25Literally.
14:26Wait.
14:27You don't want my hair?
14:29There's a funny play on words here.
14:31Figuratively, we use the expression get out of someone's hair to mean to stop bothering them,
14:36to leave them be.
14:38So maybe if you are trying to cook dinner and your child is playing in the kitchen,
14:42you might ask them to get out of your hair so that you can focus on finishing cooking.
14:46Or if you realize someone is trying to work or study and you're distracting them,
14:51let me get out of your hair so you can focus.
14:53Thanks, Brian.
14:55Brian?
14:56Hey, princess.
14:58I'll get out of your hair.
15:00I can see you want to be left alone.
15:02Here, Flynn says he wants to get out of Rapunzel's hair,
15:04not because he is bothering her,
15:06although maybe he is,
15:08but rather because he is literally wrapped up in her hair and cannot escape.
15:12Why on earth would I want your hair?
15:14Why on earth is an expression used to show confusion, disbelief, or shock
15:18to a question, request, or statement.
15:20In this instance, Flynn is confused when Rapunzel says that he wants her hair.
15:24Hence the reason he asks,
15:26Why on earth would I want your hair?
15:50Here's a nice example from Friends.
16:20Let's go.
16:31Is this...
16:33hair?
16:35Struggling...
16:37Struggling is pointless.
16:41I know why you're here.
16:43And I'm not afraid of you.
16:46What?
16:50What?
16:57Who are you?
16:59And how did you find me?
17:01Ah.
17:04Who are you?
17:06And how did you find me?
17:11I know not who you are,
17:13nor how I came to find you.
17:15But may I just say...
17:18Hi.
17:19The word nor means neither of two options,
17:22either of two options, not neither option.
17:49Rapunzel.
17:50Gesundheit. Here's the deal.
17:52I was in a situation, gallivanting through the forest.
17:55I came across your tower, and the...
17:57Oh. Oh no.
17:59Where is my satchel?
18:00I've hidden it.
18:01Somewhere you'll never find it.
18:20It's in that pot, isn't it?
18:29Would you stop that?
18:31Now it's hidden, where you'll never find it.
18:34So, what do you want with my hair?
18:38To cut it?
18:39What?
18:40Sell it?
18:41No!
18:42Listen, the only thing I want to do with your hair
18:44is to get out of it.
18:45Literally.
18:47Wait.
18:48You don't want my hair?
18:50Why on earth would I want your hair?
18:52Look, I was being chased, I saw a tower, I climbed it.
18:55End of story.
18:56You're telling the truth?
18:58Yes.
18:59Hmm.
19:18Alright, now remember that you just have a few more days
