00:00Security threats, disturbing online searches, and lingering trauma have given Prince Harry
00:05a seriously terrifying reason to keep his family out of the U.K. Ever since they stepped
00:10down from their roles as working royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess
00:15of Sussex, have received quite a bit of vitriol from both the press and the public. The Sussexes
00:20now live in the United States, and Harry has real concerns about bringing Meghan back to
00:24where he grew up.
00:26My job is to keep my family safe."
00:28Therefore, prioritizing his wife's safety above all else may mean that he will never
00:33return to the United Kingdom with her by his side. In an interview with ITV's Tabloids
00:38on Trial, which aired on July 25th, Harry opened up about the fear that prevents Meghan
00:42from returning to the U.K.
00:44All it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff, to act on what they
00:48have read, and whether it's a knife or acid, whatever it is, these are things that are
00:52genuine concerns for me. It's one of the reasons I won't bring my wife back to this country."
00:57Meghan also opened up about this issue in the couple's Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan,
01:01while recalling a threatening tweet she'd seen.
01:04"...It just said, Meghan just needs to die. Someone needs to kill her. Maybe it should
01:10be me."
01:11Meghan said that this sort of thing made her incredibly worried for her family's safety,
01:15noting that she remembered subsequently waking up in the middle of the night afraid the doors
01:19weren't locked.
01:20"...It's not just a tabloid. It's not just some story. You are making me scared."
01:28For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, having two young children makes the fear associated
01:32with death threats, online attacks, and cruelty from the press all the more complicated. Their
01:37kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, never travel to the United Kingdom because
01:42of the lack of security to keep them out of harm's way. The royal family has U.K. police
01:46security, but when Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals, their security was
01:51taken from them. They offered to pay for the security themselves, but they were not permitted
01:55to do so.
01:56In response, Harry made a statement to London's High Court, saying,
02:00"...The U.K. is my home. The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place
02:04I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States.
02:08That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on U.K. soil."
02:13Despite wanting their children to have a relationship with King Charles III and other members of
02:17the royal family, it's easy to see why the risk seems too great. Prince Harry has had
02:22more than his fair share of security threats in his life, but his concern surely goes deeper
02:26than what he and Meghan Markle have experienced firsthand.
02:30Harry was only 12 years old when his mom, Princess Diana, died in a tragic accident
02:34after plenty of over-the-top attention from the press. In Netflix's Harry and Meghan,
02:39Harry explained that watching his mom be harassed by paparazzi everywhere she went changed his
02:44views.
02:45The trauma Harry endured as a child after losing his mother is surely something he'll
02:49do anything in his power to protect his own family from experiencing, and this concern
02:53may be more important now than ever. On July 13th, former U.S. President Donald Trump was
02:58shot at his own campaign rally. When investigating the shooter and searching his phones and laptop,
03:03the FBI discovered photos of other public figures, including Prince Harry's sister-in-law
03:07Kate Middleton.
03:08This chilling discovery has prompted extra security for the royals. Former BBC royal
03:13correspondent Jenny Bond told OK! that security threats are a fact of life for the royal family,
03:18and called Harry an even more obvious target. According to her, his concerns about security
03:23for himself and his family are legitimate.
