00:00did not have it on the bagel card.
00:01No, who could have, right?
00:02You felt like that was a stable position for them.
00:05I take it as a positive, though, because I
00:08don't think they're just going to be siloed into what they
00:11think they need to do, where, to me,
00:13it's pretty black and white.
00:15Danny Jansen's a better player than Reese McGuire, period.
00:18And he's got a swing that's really good for Fenway Park.
00:20And I still think, defensively, the Red Sox,
00:25Connor Wong has had a brilliant offensive season.
00:28But you look at the defensive numbers,
00:30and he's very near the bottom in just about everything,
00:32whether it's framing, blocking, whatever.
00:35So who knows?
00:36Alex Cora said yesterday he's going
00:38to play some first and second base.
00:40And that might be more of his future with the Red Sox.
00:43You've got the kid Kyle Teal in the minor leagues.
00:45He's coming on hard.
00:46So I like the move.
00:48It wasn't an obvious move.
00:50But to me, the job of the general manager
00:53is to make the team better.
00:55And he made a move to swap one player for another.
00:58And it might be a marginal improvement.
01:00But I do think Danny Jansen makes him better.
01:02So, Will, do you kind of feel the same way
01:05I feel when I look at the series?
01:08There was a lot of good things.
01:09But then there just seems to be a lot of boneheaded things,
01:13like just routine fly balls dropped,
01:16the whole hidden ball trick that wasn't really a hidden ball
01:19trick, like he got caught sleeping
01:22and they'd make you pay for it.
01:24It just seems like some of the things that
01:26are happening recently, it's not necessarily their personality,
01:30but it feels like a scary trend.
01:32They're just not paying attention
01:34as much as they used to be.
01:35Am I off on that?
01:36No, I agree.
01:37No, you're not.
01:38I don't know whether it's attention or not.
01:39But they definitely played their worst series
01:41in a long time this weekend against the Yankees.
01:44I don't care what anybody says.
01:45The ball that ties the game in the ninth inning on Saturday
01:48has to be caught.
01:49I mean, it's in the air forever.
01:51And I know it's the Green Monster.
01:52But one of those guys has got to catch that ball.
01:55Then you win the series.
01:56And we're having a different conversation today.
01:58Then you make another couple errors yesterday.
02:01The Rafaela play was not good at all.
02:03And they went back to, in yesterday's game,
02:06after they hit the back-to-back home runs,
02:08Devers is at third with nobody out.
02:10They don't score him.
02:11And then later in the game, you got another guy at third
02:13with nobody out and don't score.
02:15And that's the kind of stuff they
02:17did in that month of May, which drove us all crazy.
02:19I hope it's a blip on the radar.
02:21I think this is the time of year when some fatigue can set in.
02:25There are all these distractions.
02:27What's the team going to do with the deadline?
02:29But that's no excuse for what happened this weekend
02:31against the Yankees.
02:32It was a total eyesore.
02:35Yeah, and this is something I expect.
02:37Like, if Cora doesn't have talent, I expect now,
02:41I think his is what I think his reputation is.
02:43And Alex Cora, coach team doesn't beat themselves.
02:47Like, that's what I feel like is kind
02:50of emerging with him.
02:52Hey, attention to detail.
02:53Little things matter.
02:54Don't be a dope.
02:56Pay attention.
02:58Maybe it's just a moment in time, right?
03:00Maybe it is just as simple as looking
03:03at the bright side of things and not
03:05like an overall trend that will turn into a bad habit,
03:08I guess is my fear with this team.
03:10Because they're not good enough to make these mistakes.
03:12No, they're not.
03:14Right now, as the roster currently is, you're right.
03:16They don't have a lot of wiggle room to play great games.
03:19They use their athleticism, which I do think
03:21gives them a little more margin.
03:22But no, they've got to catch the ball much better
03:25than they did this week.
03:26And I have a hard time believing they won't.
03:29That was just a really weird one.
03:31The other thing you wonder about, too,
03:33is there have been so many gut punch losses
03:37over the last 10 days.
03:38And I think that when a bullpen loses games for you,
03:42it is dispiriting in a way that other losses just aren't.
03:45And so maybe there's like a real buildup of that stuff.
03:50They would never talk about it, but it's
03:52all the stress of these Yankee games, the playoff push,
03:55and the bullpen can't hold leads.
03:56I don't know.
03:57Maybe there's just a little kind of subconscious thing
03:59going on there on a human level.
04:01But that's another reason why I expect them to do stuff here,
04:04to really put life into that clubhouse.
04:07And look, it does not get any easier.
04:10Look at the schedule they've got.
04:11You've got all these teams that are right around you
04:13in the playoffs, and all these teams that are good.
04:16Starting with the Mariners tonight at Fenway,
04:18but then you get Kansas City, and Texas,
04:19and Baltimore, and Houston.
04:20I mean, it's all happening in the next month.
04:24It goes without saying, this is the most critical stretch
04:26of the whole season.
04:27Will, you mentioned the Red Sox battling the Mariners.
04:30They have been incredibly active.
04:34How do you see the new look Mariners
04:36that are coming into Fenway for the next three nights?
04:39Well, the one constant with them is their pitching
04:42is just off the charts great.
04:44And the Red Sox are going to see three good ones in Gilbert,
04:48and Miller, and in Luis Castillo.
04:50Their starting pitching is awesome.
04:52And they went out and got Randy Rosarena.
04:55They continue to do things.
04:59That's what Jerry DiPoto has always done.
05:01I still think their offense is short, especially
05:03since Julio Rodriguez and JP Crawford are hurt.
05:06So I would be surprised if they don't make another move.
05:09But again, baseball is sometimes a simple game.
05:12When you have starting pitching that's so good,
05:14it's going to be in every single game and series.
05:16That's where the Mariners are.
05:17So I think they're trying to kind of white knuckle it
05:20and hold on until Rodriguez and Crawford can come back,
05:23and then just lean on their pitching.
05:24But look, in a perfect world, I think
05:27they'd like to have one more big bat
05:30to help them make that push.
05:31And you hope they don't get it, because the Royals just
05:34got another starting pitcher.
05:36They acquired bullpen help, too.
05:37So all the teams around the Red Sox are going for it.
05:40And that's the way it's supposed to be this time of year.
05:43So Will, you had a pretty packed weekend of games,
05:46obviously, with the Yankees.
05:47And you had a lot of people visiting you guys.
05:50And in the booth, obviously, you had every Castig
05:54known to man was in the booth, all right?
05:56You had Matt Damon.
05:58And I think I hear your kids.
06:00And I think I heard a story that your kids just
06:03bum brushed the booth and tried to get you to say butt cheeks.
06:06Is that true?
06:07I think it is.
06:09Yeah, it is.
06:11Why didn't you say it?
06:13Why didn't you say it?
06:15We got all the cousins in from Texas.
06:20And they had the Fenway experience.
06:22And in the ninth inning, they come in.
06:24And I've trained my son to just sit there and be quiet.
06:28But we had all these animals in the booth.
06:30And my son takes my iPad, takes the Apple Pen,
06:34and he writes two circles next to each other
06:37with the letters B-U-T-T underneath it.
06:40And then he's got the headset on.
06:42It's obviously not turned on.
06:43And he turns to me and lifts my headphones off.
06:46And he goes, I dare you to say butt cheeks.
06:50That's easy.
06:52This is what happens when the cousins come to town.
06:56The older ones are firing them up.
06:58So if they'd been in the booth when, who was it?
07:00I guess Greg Weiser took one right off the wallet.
07:03I would have said it then.
07:05And that made me laugh really hard.
07:07I think there's some way for you to kind of subtly add
07:11butt cheeks into a call.
07:13Oh, yeah.
07:15I mean, it's not like they made it really difficult
07:20to be like, hey, dad, work in butt bongos
07:22or something like that.
07:23You can at least get that one in there.
07:27Isn't it great when you raise wise asses, Will?
07:31Oh, God.
07:32I mean, God, Apple not falling far from the tree, right?
07:35I mean, what else do I expect?
07:36But yeah, I'll do it.
07:38This series really feels like a smack in the butt cheeks.
07:41There you go.
07:42There you go.
07:43We should give him a challenge every week with Dr. Will.
07:47And then off of that, we just hear Joe go, heh heh.
07:52Yeah, some kind of giggle.
07:55But if Lou is with them, Lou is all about this.
07:57Yeah, Lou will jump in this.
07:59Lou will be all over it.
08:00I mean, Lou, the ultimate spit take,
08:03Lou, like two weeks ago, dropped,
08:06when Tanner Houck was pitching on the broadcast,
08:10he dropped a Hock Tua on me.
08:11So Lou is not afraid to go crazy.
08:14That a boy.
08:14There we go.
08:15Thank you, Lou Verloni.
08:16That's right.
08:17Charlotte Gresham for you.
08:18Hock Tua video on WEI and on the YouTube there.
08:22You can find it right there.
08:23Hey, Will, thanks, friend.
08:24We appreciate it.
08:25Hopefully, there is good news over the next day
08:29in six hours or so.
08:31Appreciate you, as always.
08:32We'll talk to you next week.
08:34Thanks for having me and my butt cheeks on.
08:36And hopefully, this week and today,
08:37we'll be talking about a whole new group
08:39of Red Sox players.
08:40Thanks, guys.
08:40All right, thanks, Will.
08:41All right, there goes Will.
08:43A-plus, Will.
08:43A-plus.
08:43Good job.
08:44And I know it was, what, Damon and Casey Affleck
08:47are the ones that were roaming around.
08:49What were they, Billy?
08:50What movie were they pumping?
08:51Do you know or remember?
08:52I don't know.
08:52I forget the name.
08:53Instigators?
08:54Oh, OK.
08:55Can I take the plot?
08:56But I think it's on like Hulu or Apple TV.
08:58It's one of those.
08:59Oh, it's the town performer.
09:01Do they play people from Boston?
09:03Yeah.
09:03Is Fenway Park in somewhere?
09:05They were doing filming of it in Wollaston Beach in Quincy.
09:09Do we know what it's about?
09:10I have no idea what it's about.
09:11Is it about baseball?
09:12But I forget when they were filming it.
09:13I forget the month they were filming it.
09:14But they brought in these machines
09:16to make it look like there was snow on the ground.
09:17Oh, really?
09:18Yeah, so it had this look of like, we'll say,
09:20like, you know, matcha or apple, where there's
09:22still snow on the ground.
09:23But it pretty much melted everything away.
09:25Yeah, I'm seeing Matt Damon and Casey Affleck,
09:27who are on the well-known Spanish morning show,
09:32Despierta America.
09:34Oh.
09:35Oh, there used to be a girl on there in the early 2000s,
09:38Carla Martinez, that I was always smarting on.
09:40Nothing like that.
09:41Sabado Higante.
09:43Sabado Higante.
09:46You got to bring that back.
09:47Oh, no, my name is Don Francisco.
09:49It's the best show.
09:50It really is.
09:51We never knew anything that was going on.
09:53Did they get rid of it?
09:54And I loved it.
09:54I don't think it's on anymore.
09:55I don't see it anymore.
09:56Oh, no.
09:57Don Francisco, I think, retired.
09:58He's dead.
09:59Oh, is he alive?
09:59I don't know if he's dead.
10:00Hold on.
10:01Doesn't he have a son who could, like, carry on the show?
10:04Well, that's like saying, isn't there Bob Barker?
10:06Hey, what would a?
10:07Who would do that?
10:09Don Francisco, according to the Wikipedia,
10:11is still among us.
10:1383 years old.
10:14Want to know his real name?
10:16Don.
10:17Donald.
10:17Mario, Mario Luis Krutzenberger Blumenfeld.
10:22Stop it.
10:23I swear to God.
10:24That's baloney.
10:26OK, it's Wikipedia lie.
10:29Yes, yes, they do.
10:31Mario Luis Krutzenberger Blumenfeld
10:34was born in Chile on December 28, 1940.
10:38Wow, OK.
10:39Apparently, his father is of a German-Jewish ancestry
10:43who fled to Chile to escape World War II.
10:46It's a crazy mix.
10:47Who would have known that Don Francisco would be Jewish?
10:50That's my point.
10:51I mean, that is the more you know.
10:54Yeah, seriously.
10:55Well, listen, he came up with a top five show in all time,
10:58Sabado Gigante.
11:01No, you know what he is?
11:03He's a Spanish Bob Barker.
11:05Yeah, absolutely.
11:06Yeah, giving away stuff left and right.
11:09So they've had the pads on today.
11:11It hasn't exactly been popping, Foye.
11:14I don't know.
11:14Maybe I'm missing something.
11:16Practice continues.

18:4025 from Gillette, where the pads are on today.
18:46Lots of team drills going on,
18:49trying to get some scrimmaging with the ones and the twos.
18:53The twos are in there right now
18:56with Drake May in there at quarterback,
18:59just to kind of update
19:01everything sort of that's going on today down here.
19:05Absent from practice are Christian Barmore
19:08and David Andrews for different reasons.
19:11I guess with Andrews, it's no big deal.
19:13It's an excused absence.
19:14He is a vested veteran guy where, you know,
19:17if he needs a day for something,
19:19you're not worried about that dude.
19:20Christian Barmore, on the other hand, though,
19:23blood clots and a pretty serious situation.
19:27It is interesting that the two guys that are absent today,
19:30one had this issue five years ago,
19:33and the other one is fighting the issue of blood clots
19:35right now in Barmore.
19:37And it kind of sounded like
19:38from when I brought this up earlier to you, Christian,
19:41that you're almost in your mind thinking
19:44Barmore's not going to play this year.
19:46No, I don't.
19:48I know, you know, Gerard Mayo spoke,
19:50and he's the guy, you know, we don't know, we don't know.
19:52I think it's pretty clear.
19:54I've never seen a guy who has a blood clot
19:57come back quickly, personally.
20:00Now, I'm not saying that it can't, it can happen.
20:03Like, you know, guys can do it, I guess.
20:05I've never seen it happen in playing
20:07and covering this team.
20:09It just usually, like, it's almost as a precautionary,
20:12as a baseline precautionary measure.
20:15You're out for the season.
20:17Even when it looks like,
20:19hey, listen, this blood clot is gone.
20:21They still, because I remember seeing Andrews.
20:23Listen, he was running around, he was lifting, he was fine.
20:26Yep.
20:27He was still in IR.
20:28Now, maybe they can change it now where they do the...
20:31With the short where you can bring someone back.
20:33I know, I would expect, this is the biggest blow.
20:38And it's such an early part of the season.
20:41They just got hit with a massive, massive blow.
20:43And I would ask you, like, how big of a blow is this
20:47to a defense that was literally,
20:49and everyone has talked about this,
20:51of them carrying this team?
20:52Well, I looked at Christian Barmore as a guy
20:55that in a sort of different run scheme,
20:58which, again, it'll be similar but different
21:00with DeMarcus Covington as the D coordinator.
21:04You know, would they be more willing
21:06to turn those inside guys loose?
21:08Because I think for, when I see Christian Barmore, okay,
21:11in terms of the style of player,
21:14to me, he is Warren Sapp-ish
21:17in that he's not the biggest guy,
21:19he's not the fastest guy or whatever,
21:21but he's got a big time motor.
