01:09So I saw Deadpool 3, and I'll be honest, I went in with low expectations.
01:13Despite the fact that I'm apparently Mr. X-Men now,
01:16it's no secret that I've never loved the Deadpool movies.
01:19It's more like I tolerated them.
01:21But I did find on my last watch through of the X-Men movies
01:25that my newfound love for the Merry Mutants
01:27has warmed me up to the idea of Deadpool a little more.
01:31Also, reading Deadpool's appearances in modern comics has made me realize
01:35that he's not nearly as annoying or cringe as the movies may lead me to believe.
01:39When Deadpool is written well,
01:40he comes across as more like a Looney Tunes character
01:42who has to interact with normal people.
01:44So yeah, maybe he's grown on me a little bit.
01:48But even so, I'll say the trailers for this movie
01:50did not instill me with a lot of confidence.
01:52Another colorless MCU movie set in a gray Dragon Ball wasteland
01:56with cringe humor and a tired phoning it in Hugh Jackman.
02:01I was simply not excited.
02:03But surprisingly, I kinda liked it.
02:08In a lot of ways, this does feel like the Deadpool movie
02:10that was always supposed to exist.
02:11One of the most distracting things about Deadpool 1 and 2 was the budget.
02:15And while there were plenty of jokes about it,
02:17it always felt like Deadpool was forced to work
02:19with the scraps of the Marvel Cinematic Fringe.
02:22And that's not the case here.
02:23I'm not gonna spoil anything, but this movie has a lot of shit in it.
02:26And it's easy to say that the cameos and stuff are all this movie has to offer.
02:30And yeah, you're right.
02:33I do think it's easy not to like this movie,
02:36and I myself am trying to figure out why I even liked it.
02:39Because I know a lot of fucking crayon munchers
02:41are gonna look at people critiquing this movie and say,
02:44Mm, let people have fun.
02:46Why don't you want me to have fun in my superhero movie?
02:48Like, bro, shut the fuck up.
02:50Nobody's stopping you from having fun.
02:52In fact, we are letting you have fun.
02:54No one stopped you at the door and said,
02:57don't go watch this movie.
02:58You're not allowed to have fun.
03:00You have to accept that it's perfectly fine to criticize a movie,
03:04even if you liked it.
03:05I liked this movie, but I don't think it's perfect.
03:07And I fully understand why other people wouldn't like it.
03:10Alternatively, people saying this is the worst movie of the year
03:14are a little crazy to me.
03:16Did we forget that Madam Web came out this year?
03:18But I've also seen some critics call this film soul-crushing.
03:23To me, when I think of a soul-crushing comic book movie,
03:26I think about how I felt watching the trailer for the new Captain America movie.
03:31That trailer made me feel nothing.
03:35When I think of soul-crushing, I think about Secret Invasion,
03:40a show that I watched on purpose.
03:43I'm not going to say I'm enlightened,
03:45because I'm one of the only people who watched this garbage.
03:48But I will say, I've looked into the abyss,
03:52and it looked back, and it laughed at me.
03:56I've seen a lot of people compare Deadpool 3 to No Way Home.
03:59And I think that's a very interesting comparison,
04:02because on paper, they're nothing alike.
04:04Aside from having a bunch of cameos, and that being kind of important to the plot.
04:08However, it is fun to think about these two approaches to this kind of movie.
04:13A movie that's more of a theme park ride than an actual focused film.
04:17But it is worth noting that this film does manage
04:19to make No Way Home look significantly better.
04:23Because while No Way Home is a movie that I liked and had a lot of fun with,
04:27every subsequent rewatch kind of dulled the experience a bit.
04:30All of the scenes where you're supposed to clap in the theater
04:32ring very hollow when you're watching them at home.
04:35But at the same time, the emotional highs and Peter's story overall are very effective.
04:39And I think it's one of the stronger Spider-Man narratives in film, period.
04:43Where No Way Home is a genuine love letter to Spider-Man,
04:46Deadpool 3 is taking the modern MCU formula and making fun of it,
04:49while still trying to copy it.
04:51On one hand, I could see why someone would be bothered by this hypocrisy.
04:55A film trying to copy the very thing it's making fun of.
04:58But to me, that's kind of the definition of a parody.
05:01And it is fair to call this a parody of the MCU formula.
05:04I'm definitely not a Sean Levy fan,
05:06but I do think this movie succeeds at what it's setting out to accomplish.
05:10But it does stumble in a lot of areas.
05:13The emotional beats of this movie didn't really do it for me.
05:16Because we've been following a Deadpool across three movies,
05:20whose only motivation has been,
05:23I gotta do this for my hot girlfriend.
05:25But now we have a Wolverine who's mostly a new character,
05:28who isn't really anything like the other Wolverines that we've seen on screen.
05:31And he's kind of an amalgamation of all of them.
05:34And when we finally do learn what his deal is,
05:36it's kind of not that interesting.
05:38Because his backstory is the least interesting backstory
05:41for any Wolverine we've ever met across all of pop culture.
05:45I think he definitely needed a more tragic backstory,
05:48or we needed to see a flashback for this to hit as hard.
05:51But I will say, I did expect Hugh Jackman to phone it in.
05:54He looked very bored in the trailers.
05:57But I think he was fine in the actual movie.
05:59But also we do have a main villain in this film that hasn't been in any other movie.
06:03And I do think she has some very inconsistent motivations.
06:07I'm a big Cassandra Nova fan.
06:09There's dozens of us out there.
06:11And I went into this knowing that this is going to be
06:13something a little different than what I expect.
06:15And I was fine with that.
06:16But despite that, I feel like the writers didn't really know
06:19how to make this weird, complex character work in a movie
06:23that isn't really focused that much on her.
06:25I genuinely believe that you can't really make Cassandra Nova work in a movie
06:29that doesn't have Charles Xavier in it.
06:32I was trying to take myself out of the movie a little bit
06:34and try to imagine what it would be like if I was watching this
06:38without knowing who she was.
06:40And I can't imagine I would like the movie that much.
06:44It's honestly kind of a weird decision to make her
06:47the main villain of the third Deadpool movie.
06:50This is really not a character that I would associate with Deadpool at all.
06:54But I will say, I do think the irony poisoning that this movie takes part in
06:58does stop halfway through.
06:59And this turns into a celebration of the Fox era of Marvel
07:02and really any Marvel movie that was off on the outskirts.
07:05The movies that Disney was trying to pretend don't exist.
07:09The ones that sometimes don't make it to Disney+.
07:12Which is something I didn't expect.
07:14It would have been very easy to just shit on Fox
07:16for not making movies as good as Sony or Disney.
07:19But it's very apparent that this is intended to be a send-off to that era.
07:23The plot literally revolves around the MCU taking everything
07:26that isn't a part of the MCU and throwing it in the trash to be forgotten.
07:30And I do think that's a fun idea.
07:33And as someone who has reverence for the old early 2000s Marvel movies,
07:36I kind of appreciated this.
07:38Because even if most of them are bad,
07:40I think there's value in a corny bad superhero movie.
07:44And it is nice to see that this movie is allowed to formally say goodbye
07:47to this era of superhero films.
07:49Because if they didn't,
07:51Disney would have happily pushed all of it under the rug
07:54with no intention of bringing it up ever again.
07:57And don't get me wrong,
07:57in a lot of ways this is very similar to what you would get
07:59from a standard MCU movie nowadays.
08:01Visually, there's not a lot going on here.
08:04It is indeed mostly set in the bland Dragon Ball wasteland.
08:07But I will say that outside of a couple awkward CGI Hugh Jackman's here and there,
08:11the effects are also a little better than they've been in recent MCU outings.
08:15Not enough people praise the fact that CGI works so well
08:18and seamlessly with Deadpool himself.
08:20I don't know why this character model takes CGI so much better than any other superhero,
08:25but it does add to the effect of making him a Looney Tunes character like I mentioned before.
08:28Now I will say, I do think the main dividing factor of this film will be the humor.
08:33A lot of the jokes didn't make me laugh.
08:35But some did.
08:36I did get some nose snorts.
08:38I got some light chuckles.
08:40But the main jokes in this are less of the
08:43you look like if balls fuck my balls and shit on my balls.
08:47But they're more of the
08:48hey, what if a man had gay sex?
08:54Wouldn't that be crazy?
08:55The humor in this film will not be for everybody.
08:58Personally, I think the humor is about on the same level as the other Deadpool movies.
09:03I've seen a few people say that they thought the other two were funny and this one isn't.
09:07I don't know what to tell you.
09:08I think you just forgot what was in those movies,
09:11because this is the same kind of humor.
09:12It's exactly the same.
09:13I've said this in the previous Deadpool reviews,
09:16the kind of jokes I like in these movies aren't really the ones that get highlighted very often.
09:21I'd say that first and foremost, this is a comedy film.
09:24And if you don't really vibe with the comedy, you're not going to like it.
09:28And that's fine.
09:29I didn't vibe with the comedy of Thor Love and Thunder.
09:32And as such, I did not like that movie very much.
09:35But here I did laugh at least a few times.
09:38And there are a few things that make this stand out from your standard MCU fare.
09:42I think the music is pretty good here.
09:44I'm not really even talking about the licensed tracks,
09:47even though I think those are integrated very well too.
09:49But licensed music in a superhero movie ain't really that big a deal anymore.
09:53The actual score of this film is pretty fucking good.
09:56And that's not the case with most superhero movies nowadays.
09:58I'm like the only person who even bothers to talk about the score,
10:01but it's one of the most effective ways to get an audience engaged with a film.
10:04And I found it to be pretty good here.
10:05It managed to trick me into caring about Deadpool and Logan's character arcs a little bit more.
10:09And it accentuated a lot of the aforementioned big theme park moments.
10:14Of course, one of the main reasons to watch a Deadpool movie is the action.
10:17Even before, when I wasn't a big fan of the series, I praised the action scenes.
10:21It's no secret that the MCU doesn't really try very hard when it comes to action.
10:26I can name on one hand how many fight scenes I actually love in the MCU.
10:30Wait, can I?
10:32One, two, three.
10:36Damn, that's a lot less than I thought actually.
10:38I see the Deadpool movies as action schlock,
10:41with a little bit of wacky fourth wall breaking humor.
10:44The second half of that doesn't do as much for me anymore,
10:47but the action's always been pretty fun in this series.
10:50I enjoy the over-the-top cartoony aspect of it all.
10:53And really, this isn't a character or movie that's taking anything seriously.
10:56And while that does hurt the emotional moments and the story beats,
11:00it helps the fun blockbuster popcorn sequences shine.
11:04When this movie does do cameos,
11:05it feels a little less manipulative than when another movie does them.
11:08Like when Eternals tries to tell me,
11:11guess what guys, Bing Bong the Destroyer will be in the next one.
11:15I'm like, what?
11:15Why do you think I'd care about that?
11:17Leave me alone.
11:17But in Deadpool, it's more like they're saying,
11:19hey, you like this character, right?
11:22Yeah, so do I.
11:24And you know, it also helps that the cameos have a purpose in the plot,
11:28and they do tie into the overall theme of the film.
11:31And it just feels a little more genuine.
11:33But again, maybe that's because I genuinely enjoy this era of superhero movies.
11:38And it is kind of fitting,
11:39because I think the goal here is for Deadpool to be a part of the MCU.
11:42And a lot of it does feel like an MCU movie.
11:45But that comes with the flaws as well as the benefits.
11:48Deadpool gets a higher budget and gets flashier action scenes
11:51and more characters to joke around with.
11:53But it also comes coupled with the MCU's uninspired visuals and janky pacing.
11:58I don't care how many times Deadpool tells me that the movie's too long.
12:02It's a cute attempt, but it doesn't really make it any better.
12:04Overall, while this isn't going to be one of the best that the MCU has to offer,
12:08I do think it's a little higher on the ladder
12:09just because it offers something a little different.
12:12But if you don't really like the Deadpool movies,
12:14don't walk into it thinking it's going to change your mind.
12:17And I've said this before, but you might not like Ryan Reynolds.
12:20You might think he's annoying.
12:22Personally, that's how I feel about him.
12:24But it is undeniable that he's extremely passionate about this character.
12:29He loves doing this, and he fought tooth and nail to make this franchise happen.
12:34He really wanted to play an accurate version of this character,
12:37and we weren't going to have Deadpool movies until he fought for them.
12:41You may find him insufferable.
12:42I know I do.
12:43But I can't hate someone who's doing it for the love of the character.
12:47You can say a lot of things about Ryan Reynolds,
12:49but you can't say he's phoning it in.
12:51And honestly, I gotta respect that to some degree.
12:54This movie's stupid and it's annoying, but I thought it was pretty fun.
12:57I don't know about you,
12:59but that sounds just about right for a Deadpool movie if you ask me.
13:02So I'm going to go ahead and give Deadpool 3 the MCU standard of 7 out of 10.
