00:00Organizers of the Paris Olympics want to make the Games more eco-friendly. Officials say
00:08their goal is to limit carbon dioxide emissions for the event to 1.58 million metric tons,
00:16or about the equivalent of 1.5 million one-way economy flights from New York to Paris. That's
00:22according to a climate and sustainability consultancy group. Organizers say they've
00:26targeted reductions across three categories. That's construction, transportation, and
00:31operations. When it comes to building, officials say using wood, low-carbon cement, and salvaged
00:38materials helped reduce emissions by 30 percent compared with traditional methods. Plus, 95
00:44percent of the event spaces being used will be pre-existing or temporary facilities, which
00:49will further offer a big break. Reductions in operations also include food. The Games'
00:55catering head says the average meal prepared in France produces about 2 kilograms of CO2.
01:01And in an effort to half that number, Paris is aiming to source 80 percent of ingredients
01:07locally and offer spectators 60 percent plant-based foods. Organizers also say they intend
01:13to use 100 percent renewable power from wind and solar farms, plus solar panels on some venues,
01:19to help cut down on emissions.
