00:00:00There are so many great things to do in gaming, and most of them come hand-in-hand with making
00:00:04the player feel like they've accomplished something.
00:00:07One particular highlight is the joy of unearthing a well-hidden secret in your favourite open
00:00:12world title.
00:00:13The same kind of feeling I get encountering my co-workers out in the wild, only the secret
00:00:18encounters don't run away from me and pretend I don't exist.
00:00:21But enough of me, I'm Ewan, this is Wild Culture Gaming, and here are 10 unique open
00:00:26world game secrets you need to find.
00:00:2910.
00:00:30The Lemoyne Counter Ghost Train – Red Dead Redemption 2
00:00:34Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game so massive and brimming with secrets that it could easily
00:00:39take up every space on this list.
00:00:42It can find all sorts of crazy stuff, from vampires to UFOs, robots, and even a man who's
00:00:49dressed up like the devil.
00:00:50But for this one, we're talking about ghost trains.
00:00:52Hell yeah, love me a good ghost train.
00:00:55The Lemoyne Counter Ghost Train is a truly mysterious secret you can find in the seminal
00:01:00Rockstar sequel.
00:01:01To uncover this eerie sight, you need to head to the northwest region of Lemoyne County
00:01:06and follow the train tracks until you reach the county's welcome sign.
00:01:10If you hang around until 3am, then mount your horse and ride around the tracks, you'll
00:01:14eventually see a haunting image as a spectral train appears.
00:01:19You can follow it along and gaze at its creepy beauty for a short time before it fizzles
00:01:24out.
00:01:25Now, the train doesn't always appear, so if the sun comes up, just camp out and try
00:01:29again the next day.
00:01:31You will eventually come face to face with the mysterious locomotive, and then you can
00:01:34tick it off your RDR2 easter egg bucket list.
00:01:37Man, it is an actual tragedy that we never got an Undead Nightmare themed DLC for this
00:01:42game.
00:01:439.
00:01:44Kukos can be used as weapons Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, and Tears
00:01:48of the Kingdom.
00:01:49The phenomenal Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom take open world gameplay to
00:01:54the next level, as they let you approach the game however you see fit.
00:01:57As such, there's an endless array of creative combat methods for taking down enemies, and
00:02:03this has to be one of the funniest.
00:02:05If you get your hands on a Kuko, take it with you to meet some enemies, and let those enemies
00:02:09get a hit on the little creature, then all hell will break loose.
00:02:13A collection of Kukos will flock to defend their brethren, and can deliver a surprising
00:02:19amount of damage.
00:02:20I mean, now that I think about it, if you look at these guys, look at those eyes.
00:02:24There is murder in there.
00:02:25This trick is effective against all sorts of enemies, ranging from Bokoblins all the
00:02:30way up to Hinoxes.
00:02:31Hell, some players even manage to beat Clamity Ganon with them, which is a pretty impressive
00:02:37feat.
00:02:388.
00:02:39The Super Mario level, Dying Light Secret hidden levels in video games are a
00:02:42pure delight, especially when you find yourself transported to an entirely different game.
00:02:48In some cases, these unexpected homages feel appropriate, but then there's Dying Light,
00:02:53which can be bizarrely turned into a Super Mario game.
00:02:57Yahoo!
00:02:58If you're exploring the fictional city of Haran and head on over to Old Town, you can
00:03:02find an out-of-place green pipe inside a chimney.
00:03:06Go up to it and press F, for respects of course, and you'll find yourself transported to a
00:03:10World 1-1 inspired Mario level inside this zombie game.
00:03:15This little easter egg comes complete with a running course designed to emulate the iconic
00:03:19first level of the original Super Mario Bros.
00:03:22It even has shrunken down zombie style to look like Goombas, adding to the authenticity
00:03:27of the hidden level with some hilarious visuals.
00:03:307.
00:03:31The Black Cell Phone Cheat, Grand Theft Auto V
00:03:34Grand Theft Auto games have always had an affinity with cheat codes, and GTA V is no
00:03:40different.
00:03:41However, this specific cheat is so niche and obscure that it makes you wonder why it was
00:03:45even put there by Rockstar in the first place.
00:03:49You can use your cell phone in the game to call various numbers, with some giving you
00:03:53fun gifts like increased running speed, explosive melee attacks, or sporting an array of vehicles.
00:04:00But something truly bizarre happens if you dial this number, 1-999-367-3767.
00:04:08This will direct you to a caller named Black Cell Phones and will trigger an explosion
00:04:13over your head.
00:04:14Then, if you look back at your phone, you'll notice that it has changed to a pure black
00:04:19colour, with the phone's theme being converted to grey.
00:04:22It also enlarges the phone ever so slightly.
00:04:26This is one of GTA V's most weirdly mundane and yet also mysterious secrets.
00:04:31Hopefully it gets cracked eventually and this mystery can be solved.
00:04:366.
00:04:37Play Suzerainty with Kim, Disco Elysium
00:04:40Playing a video game is great, but you know what's even better?
00:04:44Playing another game inside that game.
00:04:46The Witcher has Gwent, AC Valhalla has Orlog, and the incomparable Chaos RPG Disco Elysium
00:04:54has Suzerainty.
00:04:55When investigating the open environment of Martinaise, you can stumble into a bookstore
00:05:00and purchase a board game called Suzerainty.
00:05:03This Catan-style, civilisation-building game isn't just a neat little item.
00:05:08It's a playable game that leads to an incredibly unique interaction with your co-investigator
00:05:14Kim Kitsuragi.
00:05:15In typical Disco Elysium fashion, it comes complete with excellent writing, great choices
00:05:19to make, and enjoyable twists aplenty.
00:05:225.
00:05:23Getting your hands on Excalibur, Assassin's Creed Valhalla
00:05:27The Assassin's Creed franchise is full of so many ups and downs, it's basically a
00:05:32very pointy, stabby rollercoaster.
00:05:35But many would agree that AC Valhalla is an enjoyable instalment with a stunning open
00:05:40world look at Anglo-Saxon-era England.
00:05:43To really sell that world is the inclusion of the legendary sword of King Arthur, which,
00:05:49yes, you can wheel.
00:05:50If you want to get your hands on this iconic weapon, then you can find it in Merden's
00:05:55Cave in Hampshire.
00:05:56Sounds a lot like Merlin.
00:05:57Good, I see what they did there.
00:05:59Oh, but don't think you can just stumble upon the legendary sword in the store and
00:06:02pick it up.
00:06:03It takes a metric ton of work to free this sword, as you've got to prove yourself worthy
00:06:08of it.
00:06:09You can do this by uncovering 11 mysterious tablets, most of which can be found in Treasures
00:06:14of Britain caves, with a few held by zealots found throughout the land.
00:06:18Once you've completed the big ol' task of gathering them all, you can return to the
00:06:22cave and grab Arthur Pendragon's iconic blade.
00:06:25It's a lot of work, but getting the epic endgame weapon is totally worth it.
00:06:304.
00:06:31The Of Derry and Darkness quest, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
00:06:36If you're lactose intolerant, then look away now and close your ears for your own good.
00:06:41They're gonna be milking this one for all it's worth.
00:06:43You can discover this quest in The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt by stumbling upon Aramis' abandoned
00:06:48manor in Oxenfurt, or purchasing the Lizard Figurine in the Gildorf Shopping District
00:06:54of Novigrad.
00:06:55Either way, you'll need to do both, so be sure to note them down.
00:06:59If you take the item and use it on a magic circle in the building, then you'll be transported
00:07:04to Aramis' secret laboratory, where some surprises await.
00:07:08In this strange place, you'll learn that Aramis was a Tyramancer, i.e. a magic user
00:07:13who specialises in the use of cheese.
00:07:17Awesome!
00:07:18As you explore this maze-like area, you'll find toxic cheese gases and statues of figures
00:07:25holding delicious pieces of fromage.
00:07:29The quest itself isn't that interesting, but the hilarious existence of cheese wizards
00:07:34is enough to make it worth finding.
00:07:36Can someone please mod Wallace and Gromit into the quest to make it even better?
00:07:413.
00:07:42Over the Edge Cyberpunk 2077
00:07:45Night City doesn't just come complete with skyscrapers and crime.
00:07:49It also fills its streets with awesome easter eggs.
00:07:52Do you want to see Hideo Kojima at a hotel bar?
00:07:55He's there!
00:07:56How about Kaneda's bike from Akira?
00:07:58You can find that too.
00:08:00There are also plenty of allusions to the Cyberpunk Edrenas anime, and this side job
00:08:05is the peak of them.
00:08:06If you head to Mega Building H4 in the Santo Domingo District, you'll find some familiar
00:08:11if you've seen the anime, green graffiti to the entrance and a braindance recording
00:08:16in a trash can next to it.
00:08:18Give that beady a watch and you'll be shown the anime's opening scene and warned not
00:08:22to end up like David Martinez, the anime's protagonist.
00:08:26This leads you to ask more about Martinez and eventually be put in contact with Falco,
00:08:31a character from the show.
00:08:33He discusses his past and compares V to David, before telling you to go pick up a package.
00:08:38Once you do this, you'll get your hands on David's iconic EMT jacket, letting you
00:08:42dress as your favourite cyberpunk anime hero.
00:08:452.
00:08:46The hidden identity of the Headless Horseman, The Elder Scrolls V, Skyrim
00:08:51Tamriel, and by extension Skyrim, is a land of many mysteries and secrets.
00:08:56One of the most bizarre of these is the appearance of a dreaded spectre, the Headless Horseman.
00:09:01If you're wandering the lands of Skyrim any time between 10 and 4, there's a chance
00:09:05you'll stumble upon a ghostly Headless Rider.
00:09:08This bizarre figure, who sports a full steel plate armour set, minus the helmet of course
00:09:13cause he's got no head, won't attack you and you can't attack him.
00:09:18But if you follow him, he'll lead you to a Nordic ruin called Hamvir's Rest.
00:09:22There's no explanation for this character or quests attached to him, but some have theorised
00:09:27that the popular song Ragnar the Red holds the key to his identity.
00:09:32Ask any bard to sing the ballad and you'll hear references to Ragnar's riding patterns
00:09:37and his being beheaded, which many have linked to the Horseman.
00:09:411.
00:09:42The surprising benefits of the Water Pistol, Metal Gear Solid V, The Phantom Pain
00:09:47A water pistol?
00:09:48Really?
00:09:50What good will that do in the world of guns, war tech and supernatural powers that is the
00:09:54Metal Gear Solid series?
00:09:56The water pistol in Metal Gear Solid V seems to be a joke at first.
00:10:00However, thoughtful players can put it to good use, with it being particularly helpful
00:10:04during a certain fiery boss fight.
00:10:07Battling the Man on Fire in Mission 20 is tough, but easy if you know what to do.
00:10:12While planting C4 on the water tanker and dousing him will finish things up in a jiffy,
00:10:17you can also do some surprising damage by getting him with the water gun.
00:10:21It'll take many, many shots to put him finally out of commission, but seeing this powerful
00:10:25villain squirm as you attack him with a toy is hilarious.
00:10:29There's also plenty more to do with the gun, as you can use it to hold enemies up, damage
00:10:33electrical equipment, cause people to slip and have tasteful water pistol fights with
00:10:38quiet.
00:10:39I may have made that last one up, but let's just agree to headcanon it, okay?
00:10:44The thing about open worlds in video games is that it gives developers so much more room
00:10:47to come up with all kinds of stuff that not every player is going to experience the same,
00:10:52if at all.
00:10:53Tucked away in corners, in caves or out to sea are some truly wild things to experience.
00:10:58If you're lucky, your exploration will pay off and you'll come away with some pretty
00:11:02incredible loot.
00:11:03I'm Scythe for WhatCulture.com and these are 10 insane weapons hidden in open world
00:11:08games.
00:11:0910.
00:11:10Windshear, The Older Scrolls V, Skyrim
00:11:12When Skyrim released in 2011, it instantly became one of gaming's most beloved open
00:11:16worlds by being unbelievably deep.
00:11:19Countless quest lines set us off into the far reaches of the land, searching for adventure
00:11:23and stories to tell our friends about scraps with the ice giants or the crazy loot we found.
00:11:28Depending on how you played the game depended on what you might find out there.
00:11:31The Windshear sword can only be obtained if you take on the Hail Sithis quest, which means
00:11:35if you elect to destroy the Dark Brotherhood, then you won't get a chance to wield it.
00:11:39The quest allows you to board the ship the Catariah.
00:11:41By climbing the boat and walking along its bow strip, you can find the Windshear lodged
00:11:45into the wood.
00:11:46The Windshear is a single-handed weapon, but in order to make full use of it, you should
00:11:50be unequipped in the other hand so you can utilise its bash skill.
00:11:53What makes the Windshear so special?
00:11:55It can stun any enemy on either of its two swings for a tenth of a second, from lowly
00:11:59skeletons to even dragons.
00:12:01Thus, if you're bold and swift enough, the Windshear can get you through most any battle
00:12:05the game has to offer.
00:12:07Time to go back and show that ice giant what for.
00:12:109.
00:12:11EXP Calibur – Dying Light Techland's Dying Light games feature a
00:12:14variety of weird and wacky weapons that can be found in their open-world cities to keep
00:12:18the games fun and fresh.
00:12:20One such piece of equipment is the first game's literal sword in the stone, EXP Calibur.
00:12:25XP Calibur?
00:12:26Exp Calibur.
00:12:27Okay, I get it.
00:12:28From Fisherman's Village, if you swim out southeast from the mainland, you'll find
00:12:32a small outcropping of rocks in the ocean.
00:12:34Hidden from view is the EXP Calibur, impaled on a corpse quite literally hoisted by his
00:12:39own petard.
00:12:40He won't part with it easily, and you'll need to hold down the button to retrieve it
00:12:43for a couple of minutes before you rob the poor guy blind.
00:12:46Don't rush away as soon as you grab the weapon, however, as waiting for a further
00:12:4930 seconds gets you perhaps an even more vital reward.
00:12:53Suddenly, the corpse will set alight, and where the body once was now lies the blueprints
00:12:57for the EXP Calibur.
00:12:58The sword is able to slice through most enemies easily enough, but it doesn't have a lot
00:13:02of resilience and it can't be repaired, which is precisely why you want to grab that
00:13:05schematic to build more.
00:13:07It may not be the most powerful weapon in the game, but it's definitely an unexpected
00:13:10delight for those taking a splash in Harren's Shoreline.
00:13:148.
00:13:15Alien Blaster – Fallout Series
00:13:17Forget radiated monsters and ghouls.
00:13:19Unless you're a diehard fan of the series, you might not know that there is extraterrestrial
00:13:22life in the Fallout series.
00:13:24Ever since the original, there have been little nods, and the Alien Blaster weapon is something
00:13:28that has appeared in every mainline title, and some spin-offs too.
00:13:31Typically, in games like Fallout 3 and New Vegas, the Alien Blaster can be found hidden
00:13:35away in certain spots of the map.
00:13:37If you're lucky enough to come across a crashed spacecraft of some description, rummaging
00:13:41through the wreckage will reward you with this unexpected firearm.
00:13:44It cuts a unique profile compared to most of the ancient human-made weapons of the franchise,
00:13:48and being a laser blaster certainly stands out.
00:13:51In Fallout 3 and New Vegas in particular, the Alien Blaster is considered one of the
00:13:54most powerful guns in the game, and lands a critical hit every single time.
00:13:58It's not quite as useful in Fallout 4, but if you want to try it out for yourself, you'll
00:14:02have to find a UFO crash site north of Vault 81 and face off with the ship's alien captain
00:14:07to claim it.
00:14:08Show that little green man how we do things here down on Oath.
00:14:117.
00:14:12Arundyte – The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
00:14:14In the original Witcher, Geralt lives out the tale of Excalibur and the Lady of the
00:14:18Lake by getting his hands on the monster-slaying sword Arundyte.
00:14:21Canonically, our hero loses the blade in the prologue of Witcher 2 into the mouth of a
00:14:26dragon.
00:14:27The third game's Blood and Wine DLC, There Can Only Be One, allows the player to finally
00:14:31reclaim this lost weapon.
00:14:33The hermit guarding Arundyte will only let those of chivalrous nature get their hands
00:14:37on the blade.
00:14:38Players who have completed other quests in the game that express their honour, wisdom,
00:14:41generosity, sympathy and valour can therefore satisfy the hermit's requirements.
00:14:46He will then challenge you to a one-on-one battle.
00:14:48To the victor go the spoils, and the Lady of the Lake hands over Arundyte to Geralt
00:14:52and politely requests that he not misplace it this time.
00:14:55Arundyte has a lot of awesome features that make it far and away the best silver sword
00:14:59in the game.
00:15:00First of all, striking with the weapon increases a charge by 10% each time unless enough time
00:15:05passes or Geralt takes damage.
00:15:07When this charge hits 100%, the weapon will always land critical hits.
00:15:11Furthermore, Arundyte gets more powerful the more you use it, meaning that enough time
00:15:15with the blade is sure to make it unstoppable.
00:15:186.
00:15:19Scorpion Gun – Halo Infinite
00:15:212021's Halo Infinite saw the genre-defining FPS series take a big leap and plenty of risks.
00:15:27After some degree of staleness in its previous entries, Infinite brought Master Chief to
00:15:31his very first open world.
00:15:33Whilst the game does have the standard fare of Halo missions as part of its structure,
00:15:36players are encouraged to spend time on Zeta Halo rescuing UNSC soldiers, setting up bases
00:15:41and hunting down alien scum.
00:15:43Unlike many of the game's special weapons, which are taken from notable alien war criminals,
00:15:47the Scorpion Gun is tucked away at the beginning of the game.
00:15:50After finishing the first mission and entering Zeta Halo's open world for the first time,
00:15:54climbing over the environment on the right with the grappling hook gets the player in
00:15:57front of two inactive turrets.
00:15:59Examining a specific point of the second one instantly equips the Scorpion Gun.
00:16:03This grants players immediate, infinite access to the turrets from the classic Halo Scorpion
00:16:08tank for as long as they want, just don't swap your weapons, and you can run around
00:16:11the open world and enter missions with a tank turret on your head, firing blasts that can
00:16:15take down any enemy as well as banish dropships.
00:16:19A neat little easter egg, and a whole world of pain at your fingertips.
00:16:225.
00:16:23Magna Pulser – Far Cry 5
00:16:26Some of the weirdest weapons in video games come from series that already have a very
00:16:29clear sense of humour, so it's not surprising that the Far Cry series contains several strange
00:16:35weapons.
00:16:36In Far Cry 5, conspiracy theorist Larry Parker can be found in the Holland Valley region
00:16:39of Hope County, and working through his questline will gain you access to his secret special
00:16:44weapon.
00:16:45The fourth and final mission, Out of This World, sees you defend Larry as he attempts
00:16:48to fulfil his ultimate goal of being sent into space.
00:16:51If you succeed, don't forget to check the containment field before you go for a little
00:16:55gift that the man has left behind.
00:16:57The Magna Pulser is high tech and clearly not of this world, it also functions differently
00:17:01depending on range.
00:17:03From a distance, the device fires a wave of energy that pushes enemies and allies alike
00:17:06with great force, allowing you to ragdoll whoever is caught in the blast and or send
00:17:10them flying to their doom.
00:17:12Used up close, the vacuum instead just vaporises the target in a cloud of red goo.
00:17:17An instant kill machine, provided you can get up close, it can also be used to handily
00:17:20destroy corpses in your wake to keep your enemies from finding them and tracking you
00:17:25down.
00:17:26Number 4, Loud Locust, Saints Row 4 Everyone remembers the Neuralizer from the
00:17:30Men in Black films, and if you don't know it by name, maybe that's because it was
00:17:33used on you.
00:17:34It's the device that wipes memory.
00:17:36The other reliable piece of equipment in Agent J's jacket pocket is the Noisy Cricket,
00:17:40a tiny weapon with one hell of a kick.
00:17:42Developers Volition decided to pay homage to this weapon with the Loud Locust in Saints
00:17:46Row 4.
00:17:47Head into the Let's Pretend costume store in New Baranek and blow open the employees
00:17:51only door.
00:17:52Inside you'll find images of the game's development team plastered on the wall, which
00:17:55explode into a shower of fireworks, and, sitting on the chair, the Loud Locust itself.
00:18:00This tiny pistol has infinite ammo and can cause all kinds of chaos with a simple squeeze
00:18:04of its trigger.
00:18:05It doesn't fire any missiles or any ammunition, just point and shoot and watch whatever you've
00:18:10targeted meet its untimely end.
00:18:11The Locust does require a recharge after each use and, much like Men in Black, will send
00:18:16you flying backwards every time you fire it.
00:18:18Small and hilarious prices to pay for the insane level of destruction that this little
00:18:22friend can cause.
00:18:233.
00:18:24Ringed Finger – Elden Ring
00:18:26FromSoftware's idea of an open world is one where, no matter where you turn, you're
00:18:30not that far away from a monster that wants to crush and maim you and can do so with minimal
00:18:34effort.
00:18:35Luckily, there's also plenty of goodies tucked away for players keen to explore, including
00:18:39the only weapon on this list that appears to be alive – the Ringed Finger.
00:18:43In order to give your enemies the finger, players must find the secret opening in Mount
00:18:47Gelmore to find Gelmore Hero's Grave.
00:18:50Taking the elevator down to the Site of Grace and swinging a left, eventually you'll find
00:18:54a room filled with lava and a chariot enemy that can kill you on contact.
00:18:58Carefully dodging the foe into side rooms and then walking through the lava at the bottom
00:19:01to a hidden side room rewards brave players with a chest containing the Ringed Finger.
00:19:06As a hammer-style weapon, it's slow to swing, but despite all this, it's well worth having
00:19:10the Ringed Finger on your side for its unique skill.
00:19:12The claw flick sees the finger swell in size, flex, and then ping your enemies into oblivion.
00:19:18It's decent at taking down poise and breaking defences, and presumably scratching really
00:19:22big itches.
00:19:232.
00:19:24The Left Finger of Glover – Dying Light 2
00:19:26Giant fingers are all well and good, but swinging such a thing at your enemies is unwieldy.
00:19:30No, sometimes subtle is better, and why use a grotesque giant's finger when you can
00:19:34hide a weapon inside your own digits?
00:19:37The Hands of Glover are a long-running gag that started in Techland's zombie action
00:19:41RPG Dead Island.
00:19:42As a nod to lead developer Bartosz Glover-Kluon, the easter eggs have continued forwards into
00:19:47the Dying Light games, first with the right hand, and now with the left finger.
00:19:51After completing the Dying Light 2 mission Broadcast, you can scale the VNC Tower and
00:19:55from there jump to a specific skyscraper in the Garrison District.
00:19:59Once you land, there's a cabling puzzle to complete that requires making some pretty
00:20:02deathly leaps off the building and back in at lower levels until you can finally find
00:20:07and open a secret door.
00:20:09Inside the developer's room you'll find posters of previous Techland games, a thank
00:20:12you note, and the schematic for the left finger of Glover.
00:20:15It costs a whopping 369 scrap to build and only comes with 16 shots, but there's something
00:20:21playfully entertaining about pointing at your enemies and watching them go boom.
00:20:25Considering the scarcity of firearms, when the need arises it's nice to have something
00:20:28like this at arm's reach at any time.
00:20:31Get it?
00:20:32Arm's reach?
00:20:33Yeah.
00:20:34Clever.
00:20:351.
00:20:36M.R.I.V.
00:20:37Fallout 3
00:20:38Fallout's post-apocalyptic world is the result of nuclear destruction, so you'd
00:20:42think keeping people's hands off of nukes would be a generally accepted way to move
00:20:45forward.
00:20:46Finding the experimental M.R.I.V. takes some time as first you'll need to locate the
00:20:50five Keller family transcripts that are spread across the wasteland.
00:20:54Each one contains a number that, when strung together, becomes a passcode to a room in
00:20:57the base of the National Guard Depot.
00:21:00Good luck getting there in one piece though, the depot is a maze filled with hostile robots
00:21:03and gun turrets that make getting to the armory no easy feat.
00:21:06Once you do make your way inside, you'll find the experimental M.R.I.V.
00:21:10As a unique variant of the Fat Man, it fires the same mini-nuke ammunition and therefore
00:21:15does the same amount of damage per nuke.
00:21:17The major difference is that the M.R.I.V. loads 8 nukes at a time.
00:21:21Of course, dropping a nuke on any enemy in the game is overkill, but when overkill isn't
00:21:25enough, then drop 8 nukes.
00:21:28Considering that there's only 70 mini-nukes that can be found in the open world of Fallout
00:21:313, and you need 8 at a time to load this weapon, the fun you can have with it is limited.
00:21:36It's also limited because you're pretty likely to blow yourself up with it.
00:21:40Turns out that nuclear weapons are not a toy, who knew?
00:21:43Now there's a lot of things in this world that are pretty scary.
00:21:46Spiders, working in retail on holiday, maybe lotus pods, or the recent Silent Hill trailers
00:21:50for the poor souls with trypophobia.
00:21:53And if you thought that gaming is a safe space away from all of these scary things, well
00:21:56I'm afraid to tell you that that is not the case.
00:21:58And some developers, however, don't seem to get the memo about creating a nice, relaxing
00:22:02power fantasy, and sneak frightening things aplenty into their titles, whether you want
00:22:07them to or not.
00:22:08So let's take a look at a few of them, as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com, and
00:22:11these are the 10 Scariest Hidden Encounters in Open World Games.
00:22:15Number 10.
00:22:16Man Bat, Batman Arkham Knight
00:22:18You want a scary open world game?
00:22:20Well I've got two words for you, Man Bat.
00:22:23The fourth game in the fantastic Arkham franchise, Batman Arkham Knight, sees you as the titular
00:22:27superhero swinging from rooftops to traverse Gotham City once again.
00:22:32Most of it is just getting from point A to point B, maybe finding some Riddler trophies
00:22:36and setting yourself up to drop down on some unfortunate goons to hospitalise.
00:22:40But if you play the game and do some rooftop rambling, you may grapple your way up a building,
00:22:45and get a face to face encounter with the mutated villain, Man Bat.
00:22:49Even after beating the fellow originally named Dr. Kirk Langstrom a few times, curing him
00:22:53of his mutation, and imprisoning him in the Gotham Police Department, you can have two
00:22:57more similar encounters.
00:22:58The first occurs any time after that, and it'll be the Joker's face instead, making
00:23:02it a hallucinogenic nightmare, and the second is if you play the game on Halloween, or set
00:23:06the console date to October 31st.
00:23:09The cutscene of coming face to face with Man Bat will play again, and you can return to
00:23:13the GCPD to learn Man Bat transformed once more, and indeed escaped.
00:23:17Number 9.
00:23:18Mutant Shrimp, Metro Exodus
00:23:20The first two Metro games take place almost entirely within the Metro Underground, a series
00:23:25of subway tunnels and stations linked together under what little remains of the capital city,
00:23:30Moscow.
00:23:31Exodus eschews away from this setting to go to the irradiated surface, and one of the
00:23:35surface levels is a village on the Volga River.
00:23:38And that is where we meet our new friend here, and I use that term very loosely, the Tsar
00:23:43Fish, also called the Water Tsar.
00:23:45Now, lore in the game suggests that it is a giant mutated catfish, though it also has
00:23:49several reptilian and amphibian features.
00:23:51And have you ever played a game where the regular enemies are scarier than the boss
00:23:54enemy?
00:23:55And that's because the Tsar Fish, the closest thing to a boss in this level, is kinda scary.
00:23:59But even the Tsar Fish avoids the mutated shrimp, and that's because it's smarter
00:24:04than you.
00:24:05As Artyom, you find yourself on a boat, paddling around the Volga, only to be upended by these
00:24:08mutant shrimp, who are almost totally immune to bullets and will totally eat you.
00:24:12It never stops being scary, no matter how many times they flip over your boat, which
00:24:16they can, and will, do more than once.
00:24:19Number 8.
00:24:20Wolfspiders, Grounded
00:24:22Grounded is a small game with a novel motif ripped straight out of Rick Moranis' film
00:24:26from 30 years ago.
00:24:27Made by the tiny independent studio known as, wait, Obsidian made this game?
00:24:31That's right.
00:24:32While most of the studio was working on the fantastic space RPG The Outer Worlds, a small
00:24:35team of about a dozen developers worked on Grounded.
00:24:38Inspired by the films A Bug's Life and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Grounded sees a bunch of
00:24:42teenagers shrunk down to the size of a small insect.
00:24:45They must navigate the now-gigantic world that they've lived in and stepped over hundreds
00:24:49of times, thwart an evil corporation, and survive a horde of hostile insects, arachnids,
00:24:54and mind-controlled bugs.
00:24:55And yes, the arachnids are aplenty here, because you have to fight some scary spiders.
00:25:00Of the orb-weaver variety, and that is pretty bad.
00:25:02But the yard you're navigating also has some gigantic, to you at least, wolfspiders.
00:25:07The wolfspiders are extra terrifying because they're stronger, faster, larger, and their
00:25:11bite can cause a poison effect.
00:25:13Oh, and they can also leap out from the grass from beyond, where you can actually see them
00:25:17and land on top of you, almost silently.
00:25:19Oh, brilliant.
00:25:20Thank you.
00:25:217.
00:25:22Stalker Guardians
00:25:23The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild
00:25:24Breath of the Wild is an amazing game, showcasing just how far a company can take the idea of
00:25:30an open-world genre.
00:25:31And we're all hoping that its upcoming sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, will be even greater.
00:25:36There's plenty of enemies in the world of B-O-T-W, and more than enough obstacles and
00:25:40puzzles to get around.
00:25:41But there is one particular enemy that will cause everybody trouble, especially in the
00:25:45early parts of the game, because it has a devastating attack that can one-hit kill low-level
00:25:50links.
00:25:51The Guardians, originally built to help stop Ganon and his minions, have become corrupted
00:25:54by Calamity Ganon's power, and are now hostile to our brave green hero.
00:25:58The Stalker Guardians, in particular, are extra frightening.
00:26:01While there are numerous types of Guardians, Decade, Scouts, Sky Watchers, and Turrets,
00:26:05the Stalker variety is the most troublesome.
00:26:07As long as you're watching out for them, it's not too bad.
00:26:09I mean, they're huge with eight legs and a glowing body, so they should be easy to spot.
00:26:13However, the fact that they wander around the map means that you can stumble onto one
00:26:16of them at random.
00:26:17Now, Link may be silent, but you'll definitely be screaming when this thing puts a beam attack
00:26:20that does 15 hearts of damage right up your rear end.
00:26:236.
00:26:24The Guardian
00:26:25The Evil Within 2
00:26:26As one might expect from a game franchise called The Evil Within, there's some pretty
00:26:30horrifying things to encounter here, from serial killers, reality-warping foes, body
00:26:35horror galore, and a Duran Duran cover.
00:26:37And at one point in the game, you'll come across the Guardians, creatures that, regardless
00:26:42of their name, are nothing like the previous entries.
00:26:44The previous entry that we just spoke about in Breath of the Wild.
00:26:47This grotesque abomination of deadliness is comprised of the mutilated corpses and heads
00:26:52of women murdered by one of the villains, the murderous photographer Stefano Valentini.
00:26:56Oh, and this thing also has a huge one-hit-kill buzzsaw for a right arm, as well.
00:27:00While the first time that you meet the Guardian is designated as a kind of boss battle of
00:27:04sorts, afterwards you can stumble across another one entirely randomly.
00:27:07It's one thing to walk into a boss battle and fight something terrifying, but it's another
00:27:10thing entirely to be trying to sneak around a monster you don't want to fight and rounding
00:27:14a corner to see a buzzsaw-wielding abomination bearing down on you unexpectedly.
00:27:19Number 5.
00:27:20Reaper Leviathan, Subnautica
00:27:22Subnautica is a beautiful, mostly peaceful romp throughout an underwater world of discovery
00:27:27and adventure.
00:27:28Now, I say mostly peaceful because there are a few scary fishies down there, waiting to
00:27:32bite your toes off and inflict deadly diseases.
00:27:35And of course, you have to deal with the lonely existence of being the only survivor of your
00:27:39crashed spaceship.
00:27:40The creators of Subnautica cited some fairly peaceful inspirations, scuba diving, James
00:27:44Cameron's documentary filmography, and the desire to make a peaceful game in the wake
00:27:48of a lack of progress on fighting school shootings in the United States.
00:27:51Hence, why there are almost no weapons in this game, and the major gun you can get is
00:27:55a stasis rifle, not a deadly firearm.
00:27:58But deep in the depths of the underwater world are terrifying creatures that will absolutely
00:28:03kill you.
00:28:04The Reaper Leviathan, for example, has a tendency to remain in the depths, but will sometimes
00:28:07come up towards the surface looking for prey.
00:28:10And just for the record, that prey is you.
00:28:12The extra terrifying part is that they like to sweep in and attack you from behind, gripping
00:28:16you and spinning you around so that the last thing you see in your newly pee-filled scuba
00:28:20suit is their rows of sharp, very sharp teeth.
00:28:234.
00:28:24Creepers, Minecraft
00:28:26Similar to the previous entry, Subnautica, Minecraft was built with an eye towards pacifism,
00:28:31which if you know anything about the guy who originally developed the game, is a bit awkward
00:28:34given his public calls to have people who disagree with him shot.
00:28:37But even amongst the voxel-like worlds of mining, building, and exploration, there are
00:28:41a few hazards.
00:28:42Falling in lava, starving, maybe crying yourself to sleep at night because you accidentally
00:28:46hit a wandering sheep with your pickaxe by mistake.
00:28:48But above all that you must deal with are the little green ninja-like monsters called
00:28:51Creepers.
00:28:52These things have only two desires in this world, to kill you and to destroy your stuff.
00:28:56Now, while not particularly threatening at a distance where you can see them and pick
00:29:00them off or get around them, they can be very problematic up close.
00:29:03They make no noise as they saunter up to you from behind, until that is they start hissing
00:29:07to let you know that they're about to explode, taking you and a third of your fancy house
00:29:11with it.
00:29:123.
00:29:13Chimera House, Red Dead Redemption 2
00:29:15There's a long list of possible choices for scary encounters in Red Dead Redemption 2.
00:29:19The Nosferatu-like vampire in Saint Denis that you can find by locating the epicenter
00:29:24of a series of vampire attacks, the serial killer that you can track down that ultimately
00:29:28gets the drop on you, but there's been plenty of videos about these two.
00:29:31So what we're going to do today is talk about something slightly different, and that
00:29:34is the scariest thing that you can come across at the Van Horn Trading Post, which is Chimera
00:29:38House.
00:29:39Now, set in a small, idyllic forest clearing is a very nice two-story house.
00:29:43Like many buildings in the game, the doors are locked and inaccessible.
00:29:45However, a second floor window is hanging open, and if you figure out a way to climb
00:29:50just right, you can get onto the porch awning and climb into the window.
00:29:53And if you glance through the window, it's actually difficult to see anything inside.
00:29:56Daytime makes the unlit room darker than the outside, and nighttime, well, it's even
00:30:00darker inside than out.
00:30:01But once you climb in, you can see a gigantic chimera, which the Frankensteinian creator
00:30:06has dubbed Immensa Creatura.
00:30:08Sewn together from the parts of a bear, a boar, a vulture, and a human, amongst other
00:30:12animals, the man-made mutant, as Arthur calls it, is terrifying if you aren't expecting
00:30:16it.
00:30:17And honestly, even if you are, it's still very unnerving indeed.
00:30:20Number 2.
00:30:21Mr. and Mrs. Cutter, Okami
00:30:23Okami is a gorgeous game about Japanese mythology, full of lovely visuals, stunning music, and
00:30:28a fair few creepy things.
00:30:29One of these creepy things is the mysterious Cutter House in the bamboo grove known as
00:30:33Taka Pass.
00:30:34When you first approach it, you will see either Mr. or Mrs. Cutter, who are fairly placid-looking
00:30:39old folks.
00:30:40Like many folks in the game, you can approach them and talk to them.
00:30:42However, a slight departure from most conversations is that they instead become quite hostile
00:30:46indeed.
00:30:47Mr. Cutter will chase you quickly with his walking stick after talking about eating you,
00:30:50though honestly, his sheer-like mustache would actually be a better weapon for him.
00:30:54Mrs. Cutter is equally deranged as she draws a kitchen knife and chases you away with it.
00:30:58The only way to beat them is to wait for nightfall, blow open a hole in their roof,
00:31:01and drag them into the moonlight to start a fight against the evil Tengu.
00:31:04But the first time you come across them, only for them to launch into a violent frenzy,
00:31:08well, it is quite the startling surprise.
00:31:10Number 1.
00:31:11The Winter Lodge, Fable 2
00:31:13Ah, Peter Molyneux, so full of hope and glee and false promises.
00:31:17Even with the overblown ego of promising the world, nay, the universe, in each of his titles,
00:31:212008's Fable 2 still managed to sell millions of copies and earn a place on many's greatest
00:31:26game of all time list.
00:31:27Now, within the game, there are nine demon doors, optional quests revolving around completing
00:31:31a certain task or acquiring a specific item in order to pass through the door and retrieve
00:31:35a special item from the new realm within, and one of these realms is known as the Winter
00:31:39Lodge.
00:31:40Entering the realm, you find yourself on a snowy pathway on an idyllic hamlet.
00:31:44The path is gently lit with flickering lanterns, and at the end is a cosy little cottage.
00:31:48All seems peaceful and nice, right?
00:31:50Well that is true right up until you enter the house, and with no prior warning, a sharp
00:31:54chord sounds as the whole world flickers into a dark, horrifying realm.
00:31:58Even after you grab the item and leave the now decrepit cottage, the once idyllic scene
00:32:02is replaced by dirt and darkness, with ooblets hanging where the cute lanterns once were.
00:32:07It is chilling.
00:32:09One aspect of gaming that lures people in is the power fantasy.
00:32:13While your everyday life is full of people trying to trick you into buying things or
00:32:16doing stuff for them, the gaming world is somewhere where you can feel like an awesome
00:32:20hero who's always in control.
00:32:23Most of the time.
00:32:24One video game genre that really thrives on this is open world games, as their environments
00:32:28have plenty of nooks and crannies to cram deception and dishonesty into.
00:32:33The following titles did exactly that, with great moments that tripped up players in the
00:32:37best way possible.
00:32:38I'm Jess from WhatCulture, and here are 10 open world games that tricked you.
00:32:4310.
00:32:44Madness of the Stones – Assassin's Creed Valhalla
00:32:47Ubisoft has created some wonderful open worlds across the Assassin's Creed series.
00:32:52Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Anglo-Saxon England is among them, and there's a lot
00:32:57of captivating stuff to discover, including this trippy-as-hell world event.
00:33:01When exploring Kent, you might stumble across a madman talking to, or rather shouting at,
00:33:06a circle of stones.
00:33:07He claims that they change number every time he counts them, so he asks you to give it
00:33:12a go.
00:33:13And that seems simple enough, right?
00:33:15Well, you'd be wrong.
00:33:16The game messes with your head, as, like the madman, you get a different number each time
00:33:21you count them.
00:33:22You'll soon be ranting like him, as these stones increase and decrease without any way
00:33:26of telling how or why.
00:33:28It somehow gets even weirder after that, as after a few tries, Ivor hallucinates and the
00:33:34madman turns into a stone.
00:33:36What in the name of Odin is going on here?
00:33:38The world event then concludes with no effort given to explain the surreal phenomenon.
00:33:43If you thought AC Valhalla was all killing and raiding, you were clearly mistaken.
00:33:489.
00:33:49The Madden Appearances of the Yiga Clan Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears
00:33:53of the Kingdom
00:33:54Being a Hyrulean citizen is not as idyllic an existence as you might think.
00:33:58Sure, you get to live in a luscious fantasy land, but you also have to contend with wild
00:34:03monsters and weird phenomena all the time.
00:34:06However, whilst most citizens struggle, some aren't as harmless as they appear.
00:34:11When exploring the open world of Hyrule, there's a good chance you'll run into an interesting
00:34:15NPC and decide to strike up a conversation with them.
00:34:1890% of the time, this will lead to fun dialogue and maybe even a quest, but there are also
00:34:23times when they reveal themselves to be Yiga foot soldiers.
00:34:27This taskedly clan of Yiga assassins-slash-thieves appear throughout the land as regular citizens,
00:34:33who lure you in before attacking you.
00:34:35You can expect to see them plenty of times in both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the
00:34:39Kingdom, and they sure are a nuisance.
00:34:42These NPCs are as slippery as the peels of the bananas they love so much, you're left
00:34:47to constantly scream, not again, every time they get you.
00:34:52Number 8.
00:34:53All the Mimics.
00:34:54Dark Souls.
00:34:55Opening treasure chests is so ubiquitous in gaming that players can probably do it in
00:35:00their sleep.
00:35:01Grab that chest, get the reward, and then move on to the next one.
00:35:04It's basic stuff.
00:35:05While in typical FromSoftware fashion, the developers decided that players expecting
00:35:09convention needed to be humbled.
00:35:12Mimics are a form of non-respawning enemy in the Dark Souls games.
00:35:16They prey on players by disguising themselves as chests, waiting for unlucky victims to
00:35:22open them before attacking with their monstrous jaws.
00:35:25The creatures are like venus fly traps that lure you in with the promise of something
00:35:29sweet, only to make you feel like smashing your controller.
00:35:32Your first encounter with one is a traumatic experience that leaves you paranoid every
00:35:36time you go to open another chest.
00:35:38Now, calling Dark Souls an open-world game might be a bit of a stretch, as it takes more
00:35:43of a wide, linear format.
00:35:45Still, it just about qualifies, and these iconic tricksters can't be ignored on a list
00:35:49like this.
00:35:50Their promise of bountiful treasure turned to brutal damage is gaming trickery at its
00:35:54finest.
00:35:557.
00:35:56Lured into an alleyway.
00:35:58Grand Theft Auto V.
00:36:00If you fancy a spot of thievery, murder, or general social disruption but don't think
00:36:04you'd suit a prison uniform, then Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos is the perfect place
00:36:09for you.
00:36:10However, while you're mostly in charge of these in-game criminal activities, some moments
00:36:14will make you think, hey, that's supposed to be my job.
00:36:18This open-world game is full of danger and crime, and as such, you can sometimes become
00:36:22the victim of this criminal intent.
00:36:24However, of all the random events, this one is particularly embarrassing.
00:36:29If you choose to hang about in La Mesa next to Ammunation, then you might encounter a
00:36:33woman calling out for help.
00:36:35The nicer among you will follow her, hoping to be of assistance, but that's when she
00:36:40and a male friend jump you, pulling guns and demanding your money.
00:36:43Uh-oh.
00:36:44Of course, their guns are about as threatening as peace shooters compared to your brutal
00:36:47arsenal in GTA V, but even so, you'll be kicking yourself for falling for such an obvious
00:36:53trap.
00:36:54And you're supposed to be the criminal mastermind, remember?
00:36:57Yeah, right.
00:36:586.
00:36:59That is not Bruce Wayne.
00:37:01Batman Arkham Knight.
00:37:03The Batman Arkham games famously love to misdirect you.
00:37:06Hell, Scarecrow spends almost all his time in Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham Knight
00:37:10messing with your head.
00:37:11Still, he's not the only villain with tricks up his sleeve.
00:37:15During the friend-in-need, most-wanted mission in Batman Arkham Knight, you're made to check
00:37:19in on Lucius Fox in Wayne Tower.
00:37:22On the way, you'll step into an elevator and emerge as Bruce Wayne.
00:37:25Your thought process then goes a little something like this.
00:37:28Cool.
00:37:29I'm Bruce Wayne.
00:37:30That's a nice change of pace.
00:37:31Wait.
00:37:32Why am I beating up Lucius?
00:37:33What's going on?
00:37:34Why is Batman here?
00:37:35Am I playing as Bruce?
00:37:36It turns out that once you exited the elevator, you switched to the perspective of Thomas
00:37:41Elliott, otherwise known as Hush.
00:37:43This popular DC villain is known for his obsession with childhood friend Bruce Wayne, and had
00:37:48plastic surgery to look just like him, and an Actors' Own Twisted Revenge.
00:37:53This is a genius way to work Hush in, as one of his goals is to make everyone think he
00:37:58is Mr. Wayne.
00:37:59If he managed to trick you, then Gotham really was close to being in real danger.
00:38:035.
00:38:05Exploring a Haunted House – The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
00:38:08Geralt of Rivia has to contend with many terrifying things in The Witcher 3.
00:38:12That said, exploring a haunted house is still scary, even within his deadly line of work.
00:38:18During The Witcher 3's Novigrad Dreaming Quest, you venture on a mission to find Corinne Tilly.
00:38:23This quest takes you to a supposedly haunted house she's attempting to save.
00:38:27Ooh, spooky.
00:38:28The owner of the residence tells you about the strange events plaguing the building,
00:38:33causing you to investigate with trepidation.
00:38:35Upon finding Corinne, you discover a freaky ghost child standing over her and giving her
00:38:40nightmares.
00:38:41So, the house is really haunted.
00:38:44Well, no, not really.
00:38:46After some investigation, you discover the culprit is not a ghastly ghost or ghoul, but
00:38:50rather a little godling named Sarah.
00:38:53Godlings do look creepy, but thankfully, they're mostly harmless.
00:38:56Naturally, once you've unearthed her bruise, you can either evict Sarah or let her stay.
00:39:01The latter leads to a wholesome outcome where she and Corinne move in together.
00:39:05Number four, tricked the whole time, Shadow of the Colossus.
00:39:09This is one of the most infamous tricks ever played on gamers, so it was an absolute chew-in
00:39:14for this list.
00:39:15The story to this gorgeous and iconic open world game has you take on the role of a young
00:39:19man called Wanda, who seeks to resurrect his dead love, Mono.
00:39:24To do this, he must kill the 16 massive beings known as the Colossi, who act as the guardians
00:39:29to Dormin, a supernatural being capable of resurrecting your dead love.
00:39:34So, you're a devoted lover battling against scary monsters.
00:39:37That seems fair and perfectly just.
00:39:39Well, that's what you believe throughout most of the game, however, after a while, it becomes
00:39:43clear you've been duped.
00:39:45The more Colossi you kill, the more suspicious the situation becomes, culminating in a heartbreaking
00:39:51ending where Dormin revives Mono, but takes control of Wanda's body.
00:39:56It turns out this evil spirit was using you the whole time, and those monsters you killed
00:40:00were the guardians of the land.
00:40:02Team Ico seamlessly tricked you into becoming the villain, and by the end, all you can think
00:40:07is, oh god, what have I done?
00:40:103.
00:40:11Aakhir Lake Dragon Surprise – Elden Ring
00:40:14From Software, as already established, is no stranger to pulling a trick or two on the
00:40:19player.
00:40:20In fact, it's more like a trick or two hundred, as a big part of the appeal of Soulsborne
00:40:24games is their willingness to throw curveballs at you.
00:40:27Elden Ring is naturally no exception.
00:40:28There's a metric ton of tricks this open world pulls on you, which could take up a
00:40:32whole list alone, however this epic depiction is one of the first, and as such, deserves
00:40:38some high praise.
00:40:39When entering the lands between for the first time, some players will instantly head to
00:40:43Aakhir Lake.
00:40:45Once there, you'll see a little group of folk around a bonfire, and truthfully, it
00:40:49looks like a pretty fun time.
00:40:50However, as soon as you head over to say hello, you're met with the sudden emergence
00:40:54of a bloody, fire-breathing dragon.
00:40:57Damn.
00:40:58Flying Dragon Aakhir swoops in, kills everybody, and then eviscerates you.
00:41:02Even those who were great at Soulsborne games will struggle to survive the initial encounter.
00:41:06And that's all.
00:41:07Welcome to Elden Ring, baby.
00:41:082.
00:41:09A Night to Remember – The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
00:41:13Lost items, an empty wallet, a foggy memory, making friends with an incognito Daedric Prince
00:41:19These are all things that happen on the average night out.
00:41:21Wait, what was that last one?
00:41:23Skyrim's A Night to Remember is a hilarious quest that brings the hangover into Tamriel.
00:41:28It starts when a friendly man named Sam challenges you to a seemingly innocent drinking contest.
00:41:34After three pints, which, let's face it, is pretty embarrassing, you wake up in the
00:41:38temple of Dubella with no memory of your night and an angry priestess.
00:41:42From there, you enter a wild goose chase as you retrace your steps, slowly piecing together
00:41:47your drunken adventure.
00:41:48It turns out you did plenty of shocking things, including stealing a goat, selling it to
00:41:53a giant, and even getting engaged to a haggraven.
00:41:57Congratulations.
00:41:58But there's an even bigger shock around the corner.
00:42:01When reuniting with Sam, he reveals that he's the Daedric Prince Sanguine, lord of hedonism,
00:42:06revelry, and debauchery.
00:42:08And he's tricked you into acting a fool for his own amusement, meaning the whole thing
00:42:12was pretty much a prank.
00:42:14Oh boy, how embarrassing.
00:42:161.
00:42:17Sweet Dreams Scam – Cyberpunk 2077
00:42:21Like Kiwi says in Cyberpunk Edgerunners, never trust a soul in Night City.
00:42:26Cyberpunk 2077's open world has criminals and con artists around every corner.
00:42:31If you're not careful, then you will fall victim to them.
00:42:34And this frustrating-as-hell side job teaches you that lesson the hard way.
00:42:39The Sweet Dreams job starts when you encounter a guy called Stefan, who offers you an allegedly
00:42:44insane brain dance.
00:42:46Of course, it doesn't come cheap, costing a whopping $16,000 and $4,000 on top to use
00:42:52his compatible wreath.
00:42:53Sadly, anyone brave enough to show out the eddies will quickly regret it.
00:42:58After giving the beady a go, you lose consciousness and wake up in the same ice bath you found
00:43:02Sandra Dorsett in.
00:43:03To add insult to injury, Johnny even mocks you for falling for such an obvious trick.
00:43:09And to be fair, he's right.
00:43:10So now you've lost $20,000, your clothes, your equipment, and your dignity.
00:43:15Thankfully, you can take out the enemies in the area, regain your stuff, and head back
00:43:19to Stefan for a nice little refund.
00:43:21Still, you never get your time back.
00:43:24As millions are finding out while diving into the likes of Elden Ring, it's the mysteries
00:43:28and random payoffs that can make gaming so much fun.
00:43:31Almost like a return to the days before the internet, before you could google every last
00:43:35part of a given title's secrets, open world titles, or games with huge open components
00:43:39to them in general, can hide all sorts of dynamic encounters only a handful of players
00:43:44will ever see.
00:43:45I'm Scott from WhatCulture.com, and these are the 10 rarest events in open world video
00:43:49games.
00:43:50Number 10, The Painted Cow.
00:43:52The Elder Scrolls V, Skyrim.
00:43:54Skyrim is home to an abundance of strange and out-of-left-field encounters.
00:43:58It could take up ten whole spots by itself thanks to the sheer amount of content on offer.
00:44:02Let's take a closer look at two across this list, though, starting with The Painted Cow.
00:44:07This event has no known way to get triggered, so you'll need some blind luck on your side.
00:44:11You'll know that you're about to witness the encounter when you see a farmer leading
00:44:14a painted cow towards a giant's camp.
00:44:17When spoken to, the farmer will say he's offering the cow to the giants in order to
00:44:20protect the rest of his livestock.
00:44:22This encounter also has multiple endings, unlike other NPC encounters in the game.
00:44:27Most have a fixed narrative that won't change, but here there are two endings, and in one
00:44:31we see the giants reject the cow and kill the farmer, the cow escaping.
00:44:35The other has the giants accept the cow and allow the farmer to leave peacefully.
00:44:39The cow doesn't get eaten and instead goes on to live with the giants in perfect happiness,
00:44:43until you stop monitoring what's going on anyway.
00:44:46The Bad Bad Ending Dying Light 2
00:44:49Obvious spoilers for Dying Light 2.
00:44:51This sequel to Techland's open-world masterpiece brings back the fun and thrill of parkouring
00:44:55across a luscious cityscape, along with the joy of slicing and dicing your way through
00:44:59those zombie hordes.
00:45:01It also has multiple branching story paths, and several endings to try and obtain.
00:45:05One of the more elusive endings requires you make a lot of wrong choices during specific
00:45:09events across your playthrough.
00:45:10This awful ending shows the city of Velador devastated by the launch of some missiles
00:45:15that you failed to stop.
00:45:16Luan is dead, Hakon is dead, and Mia is also dead.
00:45:19Topping it all off, if you side with Juan till the end, he decides to hide away from
00:45:23civilisation, hoarding all the food and supplies he can get his hands on, leaving any survivors
00:45:28to starve and waste away.
00:45:29What does your main character Aiden do?
00:45:31Well, nothing.
00:45:32He just leaves the city and goes back to being a pilgrim.
00:45:35If for some reason you want this horrific ending, just follow these simple steps at
00:45:39key moments in the game.
00:45:40Firstly, kill Hakon in the church when the opportunity arises.
00:45:43Next, give the VNC tower to the Peacekeepers, but give it to Juan instead of Jack Matt.
00:45:48Don't romance Luan at any point in the game, and lastly, save Luan during X13.
00:45:53Congratulations, you now get the most depressing ending in a video game since Mass Effect 2's
00:45:58complete suicide mission failure.
00:46:00The Normandy Drops By No Man's Sky
00:46:02No Man's Sky is a video game that has certainly come a long way from its original release
00:46:06in 2016.
00:46:07Receiving a lot of criticism for being a half-baked title, Hello Games continuously updated and
00:46:12turned No Man's Sky into a game worthy of owning, with reviewers and critics praising
00:46:16it profusely from 2020 onwards.
00:46:18Between the dates of 18th to 31st May 2021, and then the dates of 8th to 21st December
00:46:242021, a special themed expedition took place.
00:46:28Players could attempt to get a hold of Mass Effect's SR-1 Normandy as one of their frigates.
00:46:32Players had to play the expedition between those dates to have even a chance of finding
00:46:36and owning this iconic ship.
00:46:38Expeditions as a mission type offer the chance to win cosmetic rewards as you reach certain
00:46:42challenge milestones.
00:46:44Changing every week, one of the cosmetic rewards was the Normandy itself, though to maintain
00:46:48exclusivity anyone who didn't grab the ship on those specified dates can no longer acquire
00:46:52it at all.
00:46:54The Reaper Persona 5
00:46:55The Persona series as a whole has lots of fun and sneakily hidden secrets, most come
00:46:59in the form of special bosses that will take some finessing to find.
00:47:02The Reaper is one of those rare encounters, a powerful and intimidating foe that most
00:47:06players will have missed on their first run through.
00:47:09So strong that even high-level players who have gotten good gear can be wiped out in
00:47:12mere seconds, caution is a must if you wish to do battle.
00:47:16Even Morgana and the rest of the gang will comment on how powerful the aura of the Reaper
00:47:19is when it finally rears its head.
00:47:21To get the Reaper to appear, players need to meander around in mementos for quite some
00:47:25time, never leaving the floor that they're on.
00:47:28After a good chunk of time has passed, you'll eventually start to hear some chains rattling.
00:47:32This is a good sign or a bad one, depending on how you want to view it.
00:47:35If the player continues to wait around, the Reaper will eventually turn up and immediately
00:47:39make a beeline straight towards them.
00:47:41Hopefully you're ready, because this is a supremely hard and well-hidden fight for
00:47:44a reason.
00:47:46Dark Energy Dissertation Mass Effect 3
00:47:48One of many instances in Mass Effect 3 that relied on specific things happening in both
00:47:52previous games, during Mission Citadel Medijel Sabotage, you must have spoken to and completed
00:47:57all of Conrad Werner's tasks.
00:47:59Doing so will make Werner a potential war asset during this mission, and he'll give
00:48:03you access to his Dark Energy Dissertation, worth a whopping one whole point towards your
00:48:07Galactic Readiness endgame stat.
00:48:09You can also snag some more points for the Galactic Readiness meter if you've been super
00:48:13diligent with your time to this point.
00:48:15You'll need to have finished the following quests, Feroz Data Recovery, a fetch quest
00:48:19that must be completed not long after you destroy the Thorian, UNC Asari Writings, an
00:48:24incredibly tedious collectible quest where you need to find 14 writings spread throughout
00:48:28the galaxy, and buy the Elkos Combined Armoury Licence from a vendor.
00:48:32Until this point, most of these had felt pretty pointless, but beating all three nets you
00:48:36an incredible boost to the dissertation in the form of four more points.
00:48:40Yes, if you hadn't guessed, these amounts are arguably not worth all that effort, but
00:48:44the triggering of them is certainly rare because of it.
00:48:475.
00:48:48The Ghost Ship The Witcher 3
00:48:49The Witcher 3 is a sprawling open-world game with so much to discover, from references
00:48:53to Doctor Who's Weeping Angels to character Berna Brand being found chained to a rock
00:48:57if Geralt gets her sentenced to death during the story.
00:49:00Even rarer though is the strange instance of a ghost ship that appears at a specific
00:49:04location at a specific time of day.
00:49:06To peek a glimpse at this eerie sight, players will need to be roaming the seas around Skellig
00:49:10and Hindersfjall on the Skellige map, at around 1am.
00:49:14If done correctly, you'll be greeted by the sight of a ghostly blue, transparent ship.
00:49:18However, you have to be quick as this encounter doesn't last very long, the ship disappearing
00:49:22below the surface once more.
00:49:23This ghost ship can't be interacted with, so just enjoy the sight for what it is, a
00:49:28scary random encounter on the seas of a mysteriously dark fantasy world.
00:49:324.
00:49:33Killbin Final Fantasy VII
00:49:34The gargantuan Final Fantasy games are filled with hidden secrets and bosses, especially
00:49:38strewn across their wider open-world maps.
00:49:41Some secrets players may never discover unless they have a guide to hand, or are adamant
00:49:45about searching every nook and cranny.
00:49:47Killbin is one of those rare encounters, with the odds of stumbling into battle with them
00:49:50supremely small.
00:49:52The zone that Killbin spawns in is called the Rocky Path, located within the Whirlwind
00:49:56Maze.
00:49:57Rocky Path is an area most players will quickly breeze through due to how small it is overall,
00:50:01meaning this creature is barely ever talked about.
00:50:04Killbin then is a bizarre looking enemy that takes the form of a die.
00:50:07It will fight the player by rolling itself and then attacking according to whatever number
00:50:11it lands on.
00:50:12Each number correlates to a spell, such as casting fire or ice, slowing party members
00:50:16down or just healing itself.
00:50:17All this said, fear not, as despite being rare and looking quite intimidating, Killbins
00:50:22are complete pushovers, posing very little threat despite their rarity.
00:50:262.
00:50:27Maik the Liar
00:50:28The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
00:50:29A character most Skyrim players will have missed, Maik the Liar has quite the reputation
00:50:33amongst fans of Elder Scrolls overall.
00:50:35However, he's still one of the hardest encounters to stumble across, mainly as there's no correlation
00:50:40on how to get him to pop up, similar to the Painted Cow.
00:50:43This mischievous Khajiit wanders around spreading hilarious misinformation and appears as an
00:50:47easter egg for completionists.
00:50:49Maik has appeared in every Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind, where this devilish feline
00:50:53made one hell of an impact.
00:50:54Thankfully, Maik is harmless and does nothing more than make ludicrous comments about people
00:50:58and certain situations, ranging from combat tips about trying to fight with two swords,
00:51:03in jokes about how Winterhold was once referenced as a city before Skyrim, and much more.
00:51:081.
00:51:09Morden's Soulless Lives?
00:51:10Mass Effect 3
00:51:11Finishing this off, let's head back to Mass Effect 3 with one of the rarest encounters
00:51:15in the game, Morden's Soulless surviving the events on Tachanka.
00:51:18Getting this to happen requires very specific actions to be taken at key points across the
00:51:22trilogy, as well as having a high enough renegade skill to pull off the necessary dialogue options.
00:51:27So where to start?
00:51:28Well, firstly, you're going to need to go back to Mass Effect 1 and have Rex killed
00:51:31on Vermeier.
00:51:32Second, during Morden's loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2, you'll need to destroy
00:51:35all of Malon's data.
00:51:37Third, you must tell no one about the STG sabotage to the Shroud Tower.
00:51:41Lastly, the only way to stop Morden dispensing the cure in the moment is to use the renegade
00:51:45option, which takes quite a few points to get in the first place.
00:51:48If you're successful in all of these areas, you'll manage to convince Morden that it's
00:51:52for the greater good to not dispense the cure.
00:51:54Morden will then insist he needs to go into hiding, pretending that he died while curing
00:51:58the genophage.
00:51:59Morden will become a war asset for you to use in the endgame, avoiding death but never
00:52:03being seen again.
00:52:04For the longest time, even the best video games were hindered by level structures, invisible
00:52:10walls and out-of-bounds sections.
00:52:12Cut to 2001, and Grand Theft Auto III rewrote the rules on exploration, which popularised
00:52:18open world titles.
00:52:20Of course, then there are times where games accidentally give players too much freedom.
00:52:25In these cases, they can perform out-of-this-world actions that the developers never intended.
00:52:30Of course, any sandbox property can bug out if the player messes around enough, but in
00:52:34open world titles, the player can experience some truly game-breaking moments simply by
00:52:40exploring.
00:52:41Even when it's advised not to pursue bugs, it's mighty tempting, especially when it
00:52:45allows players to skip half the content, beat a difficult boss in two seconds, or hurl an
00:52:50annoying character into the stratosphere.
00:52:53That said, before deciding to explore these brave new worlds, you should be aware of the
00:52:57dangers.
00:52:58I'm Jess from WhatCulture, and here are 10 open world video games you can break by exploring.
00:53:0410.
00:53:05Grand Theft Auto Vice City
00:53:07Grand Theft Auto Vice City was the first entry in the iconic series that let players purchase
00:53:12businesses, like a strip club, a boatyard, or a weapon shop.
00:53:16However, one establishment that tickled the fancy of many was Cherry Popper's Ice Cream
00:53:21Company.
00:53:22Pretty much everyone marched across town to buy this place when they heard about it, because
00:53:26I mean, who doesn't love a Cornetto or a Mr. Whippy?
00:53:28Sadly, investing in Cherry Popper's is the worst business decision anyone can make.
00:53:33When the PS2 version of Vice City was originally released, there was a technical problem that
00:53:38corrupted the data after saving inside Cherry Popper's.
00:53:41If the player wasn't using multiple save slots when this error occurred, they could lose
00:53:46all their progress.
00:53:48Now since Cherry Popper's wasn't an essential part of the campaign, the issue could be avoided.
00:53:53But since this calamity wasn't common knowledge at the time, a bunch of players suffered the
00:53:57consequences anyway.
00:53:59This bug may have been patched out, but that hasn't stopped Vice City players getting the
00:54:03jitters every time they pass by the seemingly innocuous Cherry Popper's building.
00:54:089.
00:54:09Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
00:54:12Since Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion garnered massive acclaim across all platforms, fans were obviously
00:54:17desperate for more.
00:54:19Because the demand was through the roof, Bethesda could have rushed out a rudimentary expansion,
00:54:24and the fans would have eaten it up.
00:54:25But Shivering Isles was anything but a cash grab.
00:54:28In fact, it was arguably the best expansion of the year.
00:54:32Due to its inventive quests and magnificent world to explore, it's no surprise Shivering
00:54:36Isles won a ton of gaming awards.
00:54:39That said, it's possible developers should have spent a little more time tinkering with
00:54:43the DLC before releasing it worldwide.
00:54:45Although Shivering Isles had technical problems here and there, one snafu stood out above
00:54:50the rest.
00:54:51You couldn't beat it.
00:54:53If the player leaves the Isles, then returns, Herdeer will disappear forever.
00:54:58Because this NPC is crucial to completing the main campaign, his absence rendered the
00:55:02DLC unwinnable.
00:55:04Fortunately, all was not lost.
00:55:06Even before this glaring error was patched, it could be avoided simply by reloading a
00:55:10save state before the Herdeer quest began.
00:55:13Nevertheless, it's a little baffling how Bethesda left in a game-breaking bug like this in the
00:55:18first place.
00:55:198.
00:55:20Hogwarts Legacy
00:55:21In Hogwarts Legacy's prologue, players should think carefully when choosing their house.
00:55:26Not only will they be designated with their house for the rest of the playthrough, they
00:55:30won't be admitted to the other house's common rooms.
00:55:33Basically, Slytherins can't enter Gryffindor's room, Ravenclaws can't enter Hufflepuff's
00:55:37room, you get it.
00:55:39But this is Harry Potter we're talking about, and when have students of Hogwarts ever followed
00:55:43the rules?
00:55:44Despite how it seems, there's a sneaky method to access any of the common areas.
00:55:49Playing in Irondale, walk to the house with the hanging cloth until the player falls
00:55:53through.
00:55:54After that, summon the broom before heading towards Hogwarts Castle, where the player
00:55:58can access any common room.
00:56:00Although this is a neat trick, it may not seem practical at first, however, being able
00:56:04to explore these rooms lets you be a part of other quest-based locations.
00:56:09The developers have since scrubbed out this bug, which is a shame since it was among the
00:56:13few unintentional features that players enjoyed, unless Potterhead set up four separate save
00:56:19files in different houses, there's no way to enter all floor rooms freely anymore.
00:56:247.
00:56:25Far Cry 5
00:56:26The easiest way to compel most gamers to investigate a spot is to tell them it's off-limits.
00:56:31So when Far Cry 5 players were told that St. Francis Veterans Center was off-limits and
00:56:36inaccessible, they immediately said, yeah, I'm gonna go there.
00:56:40By approaching the entrance, the players will hear the song Only You, causing them to black
00:56:45out before spawning in another area.
00:56:47Far Cry fans attempted to circumvent this region through various unconventional methods,
00:56:52but nothing worked.
00:56:53Over time, it was discovered the building could be accessed through the lake.
00:56:58Once the song started, the player had to wait underwater until they drowned.
00:57:03Instead of returning to the last save point, they found themselves able to roam around
00:57:06the facility without issue.
00:57:08Although there's not much to do here save for picking up some loot, the glitch was worth
00:57:12exploiting since it rendered the player invincible, so long as they didn't fast travel.
00:57:17Of course, since this glitch was beloved by all, it was eventually patched out.
00:57:21Because why would the developers let gamers have any fun?
00:57:24Although there are still some bugs in Far Cry 5, few are as enjoyable as this one.
00:57:296.
00:57:30Marvel's Spider-Man
00:57:31The Insomniac team should be proud of themselves considering how well Marvel's Spider-Man turned
00:57:36out.
00:57:37Due to its fluid combat system, compelling story, luscious graphics, and staggering open
00:57:41world design, there's no question Insomniac successfully crafted the best Spidey game
00:57:46to date.
00:57:47But this wall-crawling, web-swinging title is not without its flaws.
00:57:52Many gamers experienced all sorts of mishaps while flipping around the city, including
00:57:56syncing issues, lighting inconsistency, and hilarious animation fails.
00:58:01As frustrating as these problems are, they're expected in an open world up.
00:58:05However, there was one irregularity nobody was ready for.
00:58:09By going out of bounds, especially during the Miles Morales sections, the NPCs may not
00:58:13load properly.
00:58:15Okay, that doesn't sound so bad.
00:58:17Obviously, if the player is somewhere the developers don't expect them to be, things
00:58:20are going to get messed up a bit.
00:58:22But these NPCs don't just look untextured, they're made of denim jeans.
00:58:27Even their faces turn to denim.
00:58:29Although this glitch should be funny, it's surprisingly creepy.
00:58:32While watching these unanimated jean abominations wandering around without walking animations,
00:58:37it seems like a fever dream.
00:58:39When the NPCs revert to normal, it's more freaky because it feels like the player imagined
00:58:45the whole thing.
00:58:465.
00:58:47Cyberpunk 2077
00:58:48Upon Cyberpunk 2077's now-infamous launch, it was very easy to stumble across its many,
00:58:56many bugs.
00:58:57By going anywhere, talking to anyone, or doing pretty much anything, the player was sure
00:59:01to see NPCs freeze, fall through the floor, or transform into eldritch monsters that would
00:59:07make Stephen King quake in his boots.
00:59:09Since CD Projekt Red has patched the sci-fi roleplayer to death, many issues have been
00:59:14resolved, including the deeply amusing invisible katana bug.
00:59:19To perform this maneuver, the player must put away their katana just as they press the
00:59:22menu button.
00:59:24After changing to another melee weapon, V will be holding an invisible katana once the
00:59:28game has resumed.
00:59:30By mashing the attack button, V can hover indefinitely, allowing them to sail through
00:59:35the sky and land on almost any skyscraper.
00:59:38From there, you can go wherever you want, often with disastrous but hilarious results.
00:59:43Even though gamers were relieved when the developers remedied Cyberpunk's avalanche
00:59:46of technical problems, this is one many people wish was left in.
00:59:50I mean, who doesn't want to wiggle an invisible sword around to soar through Night City like
00:59:55Superman?
00:59:564.
00:59:57Elden Ring
00:59:58Even though Elden Ring was absolutely hyped like crazy, Hidetaka Miyazaki's magnum opus
01:00:04absolutely exceeded everybody's expectations.
01:00:07Although 2022 was a towering year for gaming, Elden Ring confidently sat at the top, never
01:00:13the less, FromSoftware's greatest achievement isn't immune to a bug or two.
01:00:17Ironically, one of the easiest glitches to exploit revolves around the game's defining
01:00:21feature, the brutal boss battles.
01:00:24So which bosses are bugged?
01:00:26Possibly all of them.
01:00:27You see, these ruthless adversaries only recognize the player after they pass through the arena's
01:00:31fog door.
01:00:32If the player finds another entryway, the boss won't attack, making the fight terribly
01:00:38one-sided.
01:00:39However, this is merely one way to turn a boss fight in this game into easy pickings.
01:00:44By tricking Radan into climbing a hill, he'll tumble to his death, without triggering the
01:00:48second phase of the battle.
01:00:50The fire giant can be vanquished with a similar technique.
01:00:53If the player quits after reaching an out-of-bounds point in a boss room, the enemy won't attack
01:00:58when the save state is reloaded.
01:01:00This trick works on Mog, Loretta, and, would you believe it, even the living nightmare
01:01:05herself, Melania.
01:01:073.
01:01:08Saints Row 2 Saints Row 2 proved its predecessor wasn't
01:01:11just a fluke.
01:01:12Due to the sequel's interactive open-world map, diverse customization options, action-packed
01:01:18combat, fab voice acting, and on-point humor, it was obvious that this was a franchise in
01:01:23the making, until the dreadful remake.
01:01:26But for all of Saints Row 2's strength, it's infamous for having one of the worst glitches
01:01:30in gaming.
01:01:31By activating certain cheats in the zombie uprising minigame, the player can knock themselves
01:01:36out of the map.
01:01:38After that, things get a little bit, well, apocalyptic.
01:01:42Debris flies around, interiors turn invisible, and the sky takes on a rapture-like glow.
01:01:48But the next part of this bug is so freaky, it genuinely sounds like a creepypasta.
01:01:53If the player performs this maneuver repeatedly, they'll eventually encounter the dreaded Freezer.
01:01:58The Freezer is a shadowy NPC that appears randomly inside a wall.
01:02:04Once the player encounters him, it's game over.
01:02:07Not figuratively, it's literally game over, the game breaks.
01:02:10The Freezer doesn't just wipe the save file, it renders the disc unplayable.
01:02:14As such, this is one game-breaking glitch that's 100% not worth checking out, not even
01:02:20out of curiosity.
01:02:212.
01:02:22Sonic Frontiers
01:02:24Glitches are so rampant in 3D Sonic titles, it's easy to mistake them as intentional features.
01:02:29Sonic Frontiers is no different, since the player can shatter the gameplay by exploiting
01:02:34certain mechanics, such as rail-launching, homing dash, and wing-bounce.
01:02:38Then there's the out-of-bounds glitches.
01:02:40Taking a photo in Ares Island's underground will make the game go kaput.
01:02:45By messing around with the Psyloop moved during Battle Rush on Kronos Island, Sonic can clip
01:02:49through the ground, which can muffle the sound, mute the music, or kill our wisecracking hero.
01:02:55However, this super-launch takes game-breaking to a whole new level, literally.
01:03:00After Sonic locks onto an enemy, he needs to perform a dodge, followed immediately by
01:03:05a stomp attack.
01:03:06If Sonic activates Air Boost just before the stomp lands, the titular hedgehog will catapult
01:03:11into the stratosphere.
01:03:13By maneuvering Sonic before he lands, he can reach regions far earlier than he should have
01:03:17been able to.
01:03:18As a result, this trick is very popular in the speedrunning community.
01:03:22But it's not all fine and dandy.
01:03:25Sometimes you'll land in an area you're really not supposed to be, causing the game to crash.
01:03:301.
01:03:31The Legend of Zelda – Tears of the Kingdom
01:03:33Because Breath of the Wild was a free-for-all for glitch-exploiting speedrunners, Nintendo
01:03:37tried extra hard to ensure the follow-up wouldn't suffer the same issue.
01:03:42But Tears of the Kingdom offers up so very much freedom that it's easier than ever to
01:03:46break the game.
01:03:47Bows, shields, weapons, and material can be endlessly duplicated.
01:03:51Even though the developers devised a patch to remedy the issue, sneaky players learned
01:03:56how to work around it almost immediately.
01:03:58But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
01:04:00By attaching walls and planks around an NPC, Link can trap them in a box and hurl them
01:04:05away, often to places the character was never intended to enter.
01:04:10Using recall on an object falling from the sky while standing on it will cause Link to
01:04:14be launched miles into the air.
01:04:16Once the player masters rockets, fans, and batteries, Link can turn almost anything into
01:04:21a vehicle.
01:04:23Just as a reminder, Tears of the Kingdom came out in May.
01:04:26Within weeks, players figured out how to earn a million rupees in an hour and surf across
01:04:30Hyrule on a plank of wood.
01:04:32With that in mind, we can only imagine what features are going to be discovered as the
01:04:36months wear on.
01:04:38Serial killers are some of the scariest and most interesting stories in the world, and
01:04:42it's no surprise that they populate some of your favourite games, lurking in the shadows
01:04:46for players to hunt down.
01:04:48And with that in mind, I'm Josh from WhatCulture.com and these are the 10 Best Serial Killers in
01:04:52Open World Games.
01:04:5410.
01:04:55Vincent the White Church Murderer, Arcanum
01:04:57Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura is a 2001 isometric open world RPG with one hell
01:05:03of a long title.
01:05:05In Arcanum, you play as the lone survivor of a zeppelin crash in a realm toying the
01:05:09rift between magic and steampunk technology being the dominant force in the world.
01:05:14Within Arcanum, you can be tasked with investigating a series of deaths in the city of Caledon.
01:05:19The killer is an elven wizard named Vincent who is secretly possessed by a demon called
01:05:24uh…
01:05:25Lanamelech?
01:05:26Lanamelech?
01:05:27Lanamelech.
01:05:28That one sounds right.
01:05:30In order to successfully complete the quest, you must research demonology, acquire an ancient
01:05:34dagger, and then kill Vincent with said dagger before he can transform into the demon itself
01:05:39and flee, causing you to fail the quest.
01:05:42Vincent, under the demon's influence, manages to kill two people before you arrive on the
01:05:46scene, and then he kills a third while you're in the process of investigating him.
01:05:51And there's a similar MO in each of the first two cases where he uses demon strength
01:05:55to force open trapdoors and then climb into their homes to get his murdering done.
01:06:00So yeah, he's a bit of a wrong'un all things considered.
01:06:039.
01:06:04Neb, the Child-Killing Gnome, Baldur's Gate
01:06:06Now Baldur's Gate isn't exactly a bright, cheery world to begin with.
01:06:10You and your companions must traipse around Sword Coast completing quests to ultimately
01:06:15stop a demon's spawn.
01:06:17Within the world of Baldur's Gate and its sequel, you can come across Neb, a gnome with
01:06:22a penchant for murdering children.
01:06:24When we find him while imprisoned at one point in the game, he will offer his secret plans
01:06:28of escape in exchange for solving a riddle of his.
01:06:31And the riddle ultimately comes down to, how many children has Neb murdered?
01:06:36And the answer, if you're wondering, is a chilling 33.
01:06:40In the game's sequel, you come across Neb in the course of another quest and can actually
01:06:44fight him this time around.
01:06:46In this battle, he summons the trapped spirits of his child victims to protect him, and you
01:06:50must fight your way through them to kill him.
01:06:53In a heroic moment, you do get bonuses for each child spirit you spare, and you also
01:06:57get Neb's head and the quest item, so yeah, not a bad reward I guess.
01:07:028.
01:07:03Quentin and Kelda, Dragon Age 2
01:07:04Dragon Age 2's Hawke gets two chances to deal with serial killers in their outing as
01:07:09protagonist.
01:07:10Arguably, the lesser of the two is during the Magistrate's Orders quest, where a Magistrate,
01:07:15Vernard, will task Hawke with capturing a murderer alive.
01:07:19Only after arriving where the murderer is holed up will they learn that the killer is
01:07:23actually Vernard's son Kelda, who has been killing elven children for years.
01:07:28Yeah, it's always the child killers in games isn't it?
01:07:30When confronted, he admits that he's sick in the head and just can't stop himself.
01:07:34The elven children are just, to quote him, too beautiful to live, and he begs the player
01:07:39to kill him.
01:07:40Hawke's other run-in with the serial killer is Quentin, the charismatic blood mage who
01:07:45woos Hawke's mother, Leandra.
01:07:47Unfortunately for the player, they are too late to realise that Quentin is a murderer,
01:07:51and that Leandra has already been taken by the crazed mage and mutilated.
01:07:56Quentin lost his mind when his wife died, and he's been piecing a new version of her
01:08:00together with parts from other women ever since, and Leandra is his latest piece.
01:08:05Hawke, sadly, can't save their mother, but there's a touching scene that plays
01:08:09out between mother and child after you do kill Quentin to avenge her.
01:08:13Where to even start when it comes to serial killers in the Fallout series?
01:08:20Of course, you have the Nuka killer who committed at least three confirmed murders before the
01:08:24nuclear events that put the series into motion even began, and was called so because of his
01:08:28interest in placing Nuka-Cola bottle caps over the eye sockets of his victims.
01:08:33Then there's the Disciples from the NukaWorld DLC, which is a whole group of serial killers
01:08:38living together.
01:08:39And not to forget Clandon from Fallout New Vegas who is also particularly gruesome, making
01:08:44snuff films of the atrocities he commits against his victims.
01:08:49And of course, there's the Fens Street Phantom who you only find skeletons and notes about.
01:08:54But it's Pikmin from Fallout 4 that's probably the best example.
01:08:58You can come across a few signs of a killer picking off, no pun intended, raiders and
01:09:02then taunting them to come after him, in an attempt to pick more of them off of course.
01:09:06In the end, you'll find a charismatic artist named Pikmin whom you can kill or rescue or
01:09:11even both.
01:09:12It quickly becomes clear that Pikmin murders people and turns their corpses into grotesque
01:09:16pieces of art.
01:09:176.
01:09:18The Infinity Killer, Grand Theft Auto V
01:09:21The main argument against calling Trevor from Grand Theft Auto V a serial killer is that
01:09:25he's really just a constant killer.
01:09:27It's more an anger and psychosis issue than it is a true obsession.
01:09:32Though having once been the San Andreas Strangler, I guess he kinda does count.
01:09:36Still, the most famous serial killer in the Grand Theft Auto series has to be the Infinity
01:09:40Killer.
01:09:41He's a man you never meet but you can find numerous clues about him and his killings,
01:09:46ultimately culminating in finding the bodies of his victims.
01:09:50In this universe, a dude named Merle Abrahams developed an obsession with the number 8 and
01:09:56decided to murder 8 people, figuring that quote, 8 is just infinity stood up.
01:10:01This caused police at the time to dub him the Infinity Killer and Abrahams died while
01:10:06in prison, awaiting trial for his murder before the game takes place so you never get to meet
01:10:12him.
01:10:13You do, however, get to find the creepy nursery rhyme that he wrote about his kills which
01:10:17went a little bit like this, 1 is done, 2 was fun, 3 tried to run, 4 called mom, 5's
01:10:24not alive, 6 is nicks, 7's in heaven and 8 won't wait.
01:10:28While creepy, the rhymes themselves are a little weak I must admit.
01:10:32This guy would make a terrible rapper.
01:10:36It's safe to say that there's no shortage of serial killers active at any one time around
01:10:40Gotham City and Arkham City sees players take control of Batman as they follow a trail of
01:10:45murder victims who turn up dead around the open world.
01:10:48A slow burn side mission, here you investigate the crime scenes and slowly piece together
01:10:53why each person was the target, the motivation behind the killer and eventually their identity.
01:10:59After a spot of detective work you finally chase the killer down and it's a killer
01:11:04who turns out to be the supervillain Hush.
01:11:07Hush has been choosing his victims in order to surgically construct a new face and taking
01:11:11off his bandages reveals himself to have changed his appearance in order to look just like
01:11:16Bruce Wayne.
01:11:17Unlike other entries on this list too, you don't actually get to bring Hush to justice
01:11:21here, at least not in this game.
01:11:23Instead he escapes Arkham City and you have to jump into sequel Arkham Knight to see how
01:11:28this storyline finishes.
01:11:29And spoilers, it's a little bit disappointing.
01:11:314.
01:11:32Dr. Stanley Gimble – Vampire the Masquerade – Bloodlines
01:11:35Dr. Stanley Gimble is a friendly philanthropic doctor who runs a prosthetic shop in Santa
01:11:40Monica California in the cult classic Vampire the Masquerade's game, Bloodlines.
01:11:45As he says he just wants to quote, make things a little easier for those who find themselves
01:11:50disadvantaged, giving a helping hand you might say, end quote.
01:11:54Gimble though took his work a little too far, severing his own limb, cutting off his arm
01:11:59to experience what a real amputee goes through.
01:12:02He also enjoys turning other people into amputees as well.
01:12:05And there's no telling how many people he kidnapped or tricked into his lair underneath
01:12:09the prosthetic shop that he runs, though you are sure of at least two people, one of whom
01:12:15you can rescue.
01:12:16Aside from those two, you can find evidence of a lot more though, what with all the blood
01:12:20covered surgical tools and tables in Gimble's basement lair.
01:12:24Not to mention the fact that he attacks you with a severed arm, likely that of his latest
01:12:28victim because he wants your arms for himself.
01:12:30Yeah, if I was this dude's patient, I'd be asking for a second opinion.
01:12:343.
01:12:35Seymour Fishburne – Vampire The game Vampire is not for the faint of heart.
01:12:39There are numerous people in this title that you can feast upon while playing as a neck
01:12:43biter, but you get more life essence from them if you learn their secrets first.
01:12:48One such potential meal is Seymour Fishburne, described in the game as quote, highly aggressive
01:12:54in nature.
01:12:55Seymour's known for getting into fights, but he does dote on his mother, you know he's
01:12:59a real Norman Bates type.
01:13:01Still, if you dig a little deeper, some of the secrets you can find out about Seymour
01:13:05are that his mother is helping him cover up his violent nature, and that he dislikes the
01:13:09street urchin that she has taken in.
01:13:11Oh and also, he's a serial murderer and has left a pile of corpses in a sewer pipe
01:13:17just beneath his home.
01:13:18In this game, some of the folks that you can embrace, that is, eat, are kinda hard to justify,
01:13:24but Seymour, oh boy, is there plenty of reason to put the mad dog down and end his killing
01:13:30spree.
01:13:31Though, that said, you can also cure him of his own desire to kill by eating his mother
01:13:36and the urchin weirdly enough.
01:13:39Yeah, talk about thinking outside the box.
01:13:41Rockstar's certainly got a thing for putting their players up against serial killers as
01:13:48Red Dead Redemption 2 proves with the mission American Dreams.
01:13:52Much like the similar named mission from the first game, American Appetites, you're tasked
01:13:56with finding three missing victims.
01:13:58In the case of the sequel, they're headless corpses that have been strung up to highlight
01:14:02their butchery at the hands of an unknown assailant.
01:14:05But after finding maps tucked into their heads, you can not only find out who the assailant
01:14:09is, but hell, you can even join his victims if you're not quick enough.
01:14:13Lowry sneaks up behind you after you discover his lair and knocks you a little senseless.
01:14:18And wait too long to hit him in the face with the skull of one of his earlier victims and
01:14:23you'll get treated to a scene where you're tortured to death.
01:14:26If you stop him though, you'll get to take him captive and turn him over to the Sheriff
01:14:29to collect a bounty.
01:14:30At that point, of course, there's a hiccup in the plan and at his first opportunity,
01:14:34he attacks the Sheriff and you've got to finish him off to get yourself that sweet,
01:14:38sweet bounty.
01:14:39Number 1, The Cannibal Butcher, Assassin's Creed Unity
01:14:43Arguably the weirdest, but definitely the best serial killer in an open world game has
01:14:48to be the Cannibal Butcher from Assassin's Creed Unity.
01:14:51How good is he at being a serial killer, I hear you ask?
01:14:54Well, you actually find him dead to rights, cutting up bodies with a group of people locked
01:15:00in a cage nearby.
01:15:01And you actually get punished this time around by the game if you try to stop him.
01:15:06Yeah, that's right, since he's just a weird little easter egg, he's still considered
01:15:09a civilian and you aren't actually allowed to assassinate him without the game telling
01:15:14you off.
01:15:15Now yeah, some of the killers on our list have allies willing to give them aid or alibis
01:15:19such as Seymour Kilder, others have good cover to hide their crimes such as Dr. Gimble, but
01:15:24none of them have complete mechanical immunity to the player getting revenge on them.
01:15:29Even the Infinity Killer dies offscreen.
01:15:32So beware men in the sewers wearing tricorn hats, else you might be the next meal in some
01:15:37sort of cistern stew.
01:15:40Now there are many two word combos that you can say to a gamer to get their excitement
01:15:44brewing.
01:15:45Some of the best examples include boss fights, experience points, easter eggs or skill trees.
01:15:50Still, if we add another word into there and make open world game a three part trilogy,
01:15:55well you have a pretty unbeatable combination which will entice players and bring them in
01:15:59by the bucketload.
01:16:00And you know what?
01:16:01In these open worlds are enemies, and some of them, well they're bloody crazy my friend.
01:16:06So let's take a look at them as I'm Jules and this is WhatCulture.com and these are
01:16:09the 10 Craziest Open World Video Game Enemies You Must Find.
01:16:1310.
01:16:14Chort – The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
01:16:17Now hunting down wild beasties isn't just something you can do in the Witcher series,
01:16:21it is the whole bloody point.
01:16:22Donning the swords of Big G and performing your monster slaying duties is an essential
01:16:27part of the seedy Project Red games, and this creature from The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
01:16:32is one of the most fascinating.
01:16:33Now Chorts are massive goat-like creatures with horns, sharp teeth, almost humanoid bodies,
01:16:38and monstrous tempers, however the Chort makes it on here specifically because of one very
01:16:43unique encounter.
01:16:44You see, players who want to cut corners and make some quick cash can do so in White Orchard
01:16:49by slaying cows, making money off their corpses and then doing it again and again once they've
01:16:54respawned.
01:16:55The devs made this task tougher in a patch, which forced players who performed this trick
01:16:59to come toe-to-toe with a level 27 Chort.
01:17:02Talk about being taught a very harsh lesson, right?
01:17:04Now this special Chort aside, the monster is still a rare creature in the game, but
01:17:08is definitely worth seeking out for its awesome design and rather fun challenge.
01:17:13And there's also an additional, even rarer and even larger relative to the Chort fiend
01:17:17named the... and I don't know how to pronounce this, so just put it up on screen.
01:17:20However one has yet to appear in the Witcher games.
01:17:23Fingers crossed that it shows up in the remake, or indeed a sequel.
01:17:269.
01:17:27Frost Giant
01:17:28The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
01:17:30Fantasy lands are the kinds of places that you need to be equipped for if you want to
01:17:34survive for very long, and it should come as no surprise that Tamriel, the home place
01:17:38of the Elder Scrolls series, has some very nasty baddies roaming all about the place.
01:17:41And there are plenty of note, but the Frost Giants of The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim are absolutely
01:17:47up there.
01:17:48Now regular giants are already game-enders in their own right, but these creatures go
01:17:52even further.
01:17:53They have more health than the one-shot kings, and even do more damage.
01:17:56Also don't forget those frost stats, which make them naturally immune to frost attacks,
01:18:00but pretty susceptible to fire.
01:18:02These monsters were brought into the game via the Dawnguard expansion, which populated
01:18:07the glacial Forgotten Vale with these creatures.
01:18:09The most famous of these giants is named Karstag, who made his first appearance for the franchise
01:18:14in The Elder Scrolls III Bloodmoon expansion.
01:18:17He can also be found in the Skyrim Dragonborn expansion, which sees his ghostly spirit become
01:18:21an absolute nightmare of a boss fight.
01:18:23Overall, the Frost Giants live up to their namesake, as they're chilly customers who
01:18:27you've really gotta prep for in order to tackle.
01:18:30What a thrill it is to finally take one down.
01:18:328.
01:18:33The Saint Denis Vampire
01:18:35Red Dead Redemption 2
01:18:36Red Dead Redemption 2 certainly has pretty great enemy AI, and you can encounter some
01:18:41challenging animals out in the wild.
01:18:43But if you're looking for exciting monster enemies, you're better off grabbing a different
01:18:47game.
01:18:48If you love cake and want to eat it as well, encountering a deadly monster is entirely
01:18:52possible in this good old fashioned cowboy game, because enter the Saint Denis Vampire.
01:18:57This genre-breaking enemy can be located, unsurprisingly, in the city of Saint Denis.
01:19:02After finding five pieces of writing spread across the city, you'll discover the location
01:19:06of the blood-loving creature.
01:19:08Visit this place between midnight and 1am, and you'll see the Nosferatu-like killer
01:19:12at work.
01:19:13This encounter is suitably creepy, as you stumble across the devilish fiend whilst they're
01:19:18sucking on a fresh human corpse.
01:19:20From there, you can either leave them be, or pick a fight.
01:19:23This creature of the night has been responsible for six deaths, so stopping them is very much
01:19:27the moral choice.
01:19:28Plus, who doesn't want to be a vampire slayer?
01:19:30Rockstar are known for putting paranormal easter eggs in their games, and this encounter
01:19:33is up there with the damn best of them.
01:19:367.
01:19:37The Sea Dragon Leviathan
01:19:38Subnautica
01:19:39So the sea is a pretty terrifying place, full of unexpected horrors.
01:19:44And Subnautica takes that fear of the deep ocean and brings it to life, with the dreaded
01:19:48leviathans being the apex predators of this watery world.
01:19:52But even among them, there is a hierarchy, because remember, there is always a bigger
01:19:56fish.
01:19:57Sea dragon leviathans are a colossal species, and are the game's largest aggressive creatures.
01:20:02You do not want to tangle with one of them, as it can utterly obliterate you no questions
01:20:06asked.
01:20:07They have a bite capable of an instant kill, fire breath, and plenty more hunting power
01:20:12at their disposal.
01:20:13Oh, and if this creature wasn't already scary enough for you, guess what it eats?
01:20:17It's reaper leviathans.
01:20:19Yeah, one of the scariest creatures in the game is what these colossal sea creatures
01:20:23like to chow down on.
01:20:24There are only three of them in the title, but they are worth seeking out, because encountering
01:20:28one of these beasts is indeed something you'll struggle to survive.
01:20:31Still, it's an enemy you've just gotta see for the sheer spectacle.
01:20:356.
01:20:36Chesty
01:20:37Fable 2 and Fable 3
01:20:39Players are so used to popping open chests in fantasy games that it's basically second
01:20:43nature.
01:20:44But sometimes, these boxes bite back.
01:20:47Mimics that disguise themselves as chests only to attack the player appear in titles
01:20:51like Dark Souls, or even Dungeons & Dragons.
01:20:53Still, the quirky, wacky world of Fable took their evil chest in a rather different direction.
01:20:58Chesty is, well, a treasure chest, but not an ordinary one.
01:21:02No, no, no.
01:21:03They are a living chest.
01:21:04This object has a spirit inside it, and unfortunately, they're not entirely stable.
01:21:09You see, Chesty is a sociopathic and murderous character with a surprising level of intelligence
01:21:13who appears in both Fable 2 and Fable 3.
01:21:16Finding this unique and hilarious enemy is a real task in Fable 2, as you'll need to
01:21:20purchase Brightwood Tower after the game's story events are over.
01:21:24Once you buy this incredibly pricey property, you'll start the quest that puts you in
01:21:28the path of this crazy enemy.
01:21:30In Fable 3, however, you'll run into Chesty by entering the secret Sunset House, where
01:21:34you'll play a game of chess with him, albeit with combat and death.
01:21:38This rare enemy is a textbook example of Fable humor, and lovers of the series are
01:21:42definitely missing out if they don't get to meet them.
01:21:445.
01:21:45The Marler Queen
01:21:46Fallout 4 and Fallout 76
01:21:49Apocalypses are unpleasant, no matter what they are.
01:21:52But if you chuck nuclear Fallout into the mix, you've got a real recipe for nightmare
01:21:56fuel.
01:21:57And the Fallout series speculates on the kind of monsters that could live in such an irradiated
01:22:00world, and the Marler Queen is one of their most dangerous.
01:22:03Stumbling across these grotesque crustaceans is something you can do in Fallout 4 and Fallout
01:22:0876.
01:22:09Marlux themselves have been part of the franchise since Fallout 3, and these mutated lobsters
01:22:13aren't just scary, but pretty tough if you're underprepared.
01:22:16And their queen is the utter apex of these abominations.
01:22:20She can come at you with all sorts of dizzying attacks, with powerful appendages, acidic
01:22:24spitting actions, and even the ability to produce a wave of hatchlings to make the odds
01:22:28even more unfair against you.
01:22:30These monsters are rarer than the standard Marlux, so getting the chance to encounter
01:22:34one is a gift in itself.
01:22:35Although actually fighting it makes it feel less like a gift, and more like a punishment.
01:22:39You can also see this creature go even further up the food chain with the Nuka World variant,
01:22:43the Nuka-Lurk Queen.
01:22:45This monster is also unbelievably powerful, and she's one of a kind.
01:22:50Professor Pig
01:22:51Batman Arkham Knight
01:22:52So Batman has a lot of incredibly creepy villains in his roster, but to be fair, as a superhero,
01:22:58that kind of comes with the territory.
01:23:00The Batman Arkham series flawlessly captured the Caped Crusader's array of crazy bad
01:23:03guys, but still, one of the absolute scariest, and weirdly most exciting, was the demented
01:23:08Professor Pig, who featured as a most-wanted criminal in Batman Arkham Knight.
01:23:13This opera-loving psychopath was a deranged scientist who would kidnap people and perform
01:23:17invasive surgeries on them.
01:23:19These procedures turned them into his personal brand of mindless servants, known as the Dollatrons.
01:23:24And if this wasn't bad enough, he also murdered anyone who didn't meet his perfectionist
01:23:28standards.
01:23:29Being able to confront this villain required you to complete a slew of deep-tissue scans
01:23:33on Pig's victims, who were strewn about Gotham in pretty monstrous displays.
01:23:37The brutality of these investigations really sets you up for the eventual horror-fest showdown
01:23:41with this enemy.
01:23:42The encounter with this obscure yet captivating DC villain had you battling against his mindless
01:23:47slaves and being forced to listen to the terrifying vocal performance from Dwight Schultz.
01:23:51It's one of Batman Arkham Knight's best Gotham's Most Wanted missions, well, if
01:23:55you like a bit of the spooky stuff, that is.
01:23:57This monster absolutely fits the Insane Enemies bill in the most literal of ways.
01:24:023.
01:24:03Warden – Minecraft
01:24:04The simple sandbox title that revolutionized the gaming landscape appeases all sorts of
01:24:09players.
01:24:10Do you want to build stuff?
01:24:11Well, that's got you covered.
01:24:12Do you want to explore new lands and dig deep into mines?
01:24:14Yeah, you can do that.
01:24:15Do you want to battle against powerful enemies that will make you want to break your keyboard?
01:24:18Well, yeah, if you want to do that, yeah, sure, go ahead.
01:24:21Now, while the most famous boss enemy in this iconic game is the Ender Dragon, there's
01:24:25actually a creature that goes even harder than that beloved creature.
01:24:28The Warden is an incredibly powerful mob located in the deep, dark biome.
01:24:33It has more health than the Ender Dragon and Wither combined, meaning that it can take
01:24:37one hell of a beating.
01:24:38But it doesn't just take damage, it dishes it out, as this monster can take lots of hearts
01:24:43with its melee attacks, but can also hit you with a sonic boom ranged attack that cannot
01:24:47be dodged.
01:24:48You're really in for a task when it comes to winning against this beastie.
01:24:51Minecraft may be a game primarily aimed at kids, but Mojang wanted to test its player
01:24:55base's limits with this one right here.
01:24:582.
01:24:59Igneo Talus
01:25:00The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.
01:25:03The latest installments of the Legend of Zelda series offer beautiful open-world versions
01:25:07of Hyrule that are full of enemies that you'll want to avoid encountering when you're low
01:25:11on weapons and meals.
01:25:12Many of these creatures, such as Lynels, Gleeoks, or Moldugas, could make it onto this list.
01:25:17However, this fiery version of an already impressive enemy from Breath of the Wild and
01:25:21Tears of the Kingdom definitely takes the cake.
01:25:23The regular stone Talus is a giant rock monster that flings boulders at you and can be a really
01:25:28fun fight.
01:25:29And you can definitely times that experience by two with the Igneo Talus, as it's the
01:25:33same thing, albeit now it's made out of molten rock.
01:25:36These colossal creatures can be found throughout the Eldin Canyon.
01:25:39Taking them down can be a massive task, but the rewards you reap from defeating them are
01:25:43entirely worth the struggle.
01:25:45They're also far tougher than their stone counterparts, as landing on these creatures
01:25:48will set Link on fire.
01:25:51There's even an additional level to this monster, as you can encounter an Igneo Talus
01:25:54Titan in the Champion's Ballad DLC.
01:25:57This version of the fiery stone beast is even bigger, and offers even more spectacle and
01:26:01much more of a challenge.
01:26:02Also, don't forget that you can listen to the banging musical track Talus Battle every
01:26:07single time you tangle with one of them.
01:26:091.
01:26:10Astel
01:26:11Natural-born of the Void, Elden Ring
01:26:13One of the biggest selling points for the Soulsborne games is their optional boss encounters.
01:26:18These add a little extra challenge to those wanting to get as good as possible, and Elden
01:26:22Ring is no exception.
01:26:24The beautiful open world of The Lands Between is swarming with crazy enemies, from minor
01:26:28NPCs to massive boss battles, but one that truly stands out is this guy here, the Natural-born
01:26:33of the Void, to give him his full title.
01:26:34Now, it might not be the absolute hardest boss in the game, and many would agree that
01:26:38that title goes to Melania, but he's still utterly ridiculous, and the difficulty on
01:26:42this guy is off the charts as he launches an array of unique attacks.
01:26:46He fires beams at the tarnished, has a massive tail that he can use as a melee weapon, has
01:26:50dangerous pincers, and can even summon portals to fling objects.
01:26:53Additionally, his design is actually just really gnarly.
01:26:56It's a mix-up of body horror, creepy, crawly insect influences, and cosmic motifs looking
01:27:01like a full-on Lovecraftian dragonfly from beyond the stars.
01:27:05Elden Ring certainly has some unique boss battles, but this is truly one-of-a-kind.
01:27:08Well, if you ignore the Star of Darkness variant, who's basically the same but a field boss
01:27:12as opposed to a legend boss.
01:27:15We've all seen the rise in popularity of open-world video games, with many of our favorite
01:27:19titles having these sprawling, exploration-based map formats.
01:27:23Whether you're gliding around in the influential Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild or playing
01:27:28Cowboy in the critically acclaimed Western masterpiece Red Dead Redemption 2, their open-ended
01:27:33environments and quests lead to an excellent level of replayability, proven by something
01:27:38like Skyrim's enduring popularity.
01:27:41To that end, secrets and easter eggs have always been prevalent in video games, with
01:27:45hidden items and areas scattered throughout levels and environments that many of us spend
01:27:49hours hunting down.
01:27:51So with open-world games and easter eggs in mind, let's talk about the best hidden secrets
01:27:55and references in open-world video games that a lot of players never discovered.
01:28:00I'm Jess from WhatCulture, and here are 10 open-world video game secrets you never found.
01:28:0510.
01:28:06Giant Sandwich – Halo Infinite
01:28:09We finally got our hands on Halo Infinite at the end of 2021, and despite having to
01:28:14endure a year of delay, it was met with universal acclaim.
01:28:18The vast open design of the latest Halo is new to the series, and we've enjoyed exploring
01:28:23every inch of the world, which features collectibles, easter eggs, and side activities scattered
01:28:29throughout.
01:28:30These range from armor lockers that provide aesthetic items for Infinite's multiplayer,
01:28:34to Spartan Cores, which can be used to upgrade Master Chief's arsenal of new abilities.
01:28:39All of us can agree that the grappling hook in Halo Infinite is a ton of fun, allowing
01:28:44even greater traversal and movement options to navigating the sprawling, vertically complex
01:28:49formations of the map.
01:28:50This also gave the developers a lot of opportunities and hidden locations to stash great secrets.
01:28:56One secret which baffled many players when they stumbled across it lies beneath the surface
01:29:00of Zeta Halo, in a hard-to-find cave formation.
01:29:04A giant sandwich is sitting in the middle of the cave, surrounded by grunts who are
01:29:08seemingly worshipping the enormous snack.
01:29:11Why this is present in Infinite is anyone's guess, with it probably being an in-joke at
01:29:16343 Industries.
01:29:186.
01:29:19Vault 101 – Cyberpunk 2077
01:29:22To put it lightly, Cyberpunk 2077 did not have the smoothest rollout.
01:29:27With Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions essentially unplayable, and all versions completely riddled
01:29:34with bugs and glitches, many of us were rightfully frustrated with the released product.
01:29:39The game was even removed from the PlayStation Store due to many people refunding their purchase,
01:29:44and Sony put their foot down until developers Cetaproject Red updated the game to a sufficient
01:29:49quality level.
01:29:50Despite all this, Cyberpunk 2077 is actually a fantastic game when it works, with one of
01:29:56the greatest open-world maps we've seen in a long time.
01:29:59There are plenty of secrets found throughout Night City, which players have been uncovering
01:30:03since release.
01:30:05One of these is actually a reference to another one of our favorite open-world role-playing
01:30:09games, Fallout 3.
01:30:11Found in the desert region, The Badlands, you can stumble across a large circular makeshift
01:30:15vault door, with the number 101 stuck onto the front of it.
01:30:20This is obviously a reference to Fallout 3's opening area, Vault 101.
01:30:24There are several bodies scattered around the area, which, when looted, revealed that
01:30:28they were role-playing an escape from Bunker 101 during a post-apocalyptic situation.
01:30:345.
01:30:36Frozen Alien – GTA 5
01:30:38The Grand Theft Auto series is no stranger to secrets and Easter eggs, with some of them
01:30:42being the most iconic in all of media.
01:30:45From an enormous beating heart of Liberty City located in the Statue of Liberty in Grand
01:30:50Theft Auto 4, to the sign on top of the bridge in San Andreas which reads,
01:30:54There are no Easter eggs up here.
01:30:56Go away.
01:30:57GTA 5 continues this trend, with plenty of secrets and references for you to find in
01:31:02the city of Los Santos.
01:31:04One of these is located at the beginning of the game in the North Yankton section, where
01:31:08you can take a different route away from the marked objective to a bridge, under which
01:31:13an alien corpse can be seen frozen beneath the ice of the river.
01:31:17You have to be quick though if you want to see this one, as straying away from the main
01:31:20path for too long will result in the main mission being failed.
01:31:24There are actually a few aliens and UFOs in GTA 5, but this is the one most players are
01:31:29unlikely to have stumbled across, due to the brief period of time you spend in this area
01:31:34and the inability to return to it once the section is completed.
01:31:384.
01:31:39Indiana Jones – Fallout New Vegas
01:31:41The Fallout series is known for its signature sense of humor, with hilarious non-playable
01:31:46characters, quests and encounters.
01:31:49Fallout New Vegas is revered as one of the greatest open-world RPGs of all time, and
01:31:53it's not difficult to see why.
01:31:55With a sprawling Nevada wasteland for the courier to explore, extensive dialogue trees
01:32:00and a branching story, it's been cemented as a fan favorite in the post-apocalyptic
01:32:05series.
01:32:06It's no surprise that this world is full to the brim with secrets, some less obvious
01:32:10than others.
01:32:11One such secret is one that many of us wouldn't have encountered, as it requires a special
01:32:15in-game perk to be active for it to even appear.
01:32:19Activating the Wild Wasteland perk at the beginning of the game will give way to a series
01:32:23of random quirky encounters and Easter eggs that appear in the game, which otherwise wouldn't
01:32:29show up.
01:32:30When leaving Goodsprings near the start of the game, you'll stumble across an old refrigerator
01:32:34with a skeleton inside, sporting a familiar-looking hat.
01:32:38This is a reference to the infamous scene in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal
01:32:42Skull, where Indy survives a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge.
01:32:47Unfortunately, it looks like it didn't work out in the world of Fallout.
01:32:513.
01:32:52Double Rainbow – Borderlands 2
01:32:54Gearbox's popular co-op looter shooter has become a massive fan favorite due to its three
01:32:59main entries and phenomenal downloadable content.
01:33:02One thing we love is the amount of jokes packed into these experiences, from wacky enemy dialogue
01:33:08to hilarious weapon names and outrageous sidequests.
01:33:11Handsome Jack, the eccentric antagonist of the second game, has become one of the most
01:33:16iconic video game characters of all time, and is responsible for delivering many memorable
01:33:21quips throughout the game.
01:33:22He often heckles you and the cast of crazy characters, constantly bringing up his pet
01:33:27pony made from diamonds, Butt-Stallion.
01:33:30On a cliff at the edge of the map in the Highlands section of the game, there's a camping area
01:33:34with a tent.
01:33:35If you hop off the edge of the map to reach the area, a double rainbow will appear on
01:33:40the horizon and prompt Handsome Jack, or your trusty annoying robot sidekick Claptrap, to
01:33:45recite lines from the classic YouTube video.
01:33:48Not only is this a fun little easter egg for your Vault Hunter 2 uncover, it also unlocks
01:33:53a special in-game challenge, so there you go!
01:33:56Double rainbow all the way!
01:33:58What does it mean?

01:34:01Turkey Assassin – Assassin's Creed 3
01:34:03Assassin's Creed 3 took us to the American frontier during the 18th century, with New
01:34:09York City, Boston, and the wilderness around the cities fully explorable.
01:34:13You take control of Connor, an assassin tasked with fighting the Templars in order to control
01:34:18the colonies.
01:34:19While there are several secrets to uncover in AC3, there's one that most of us never
01:34:24discovered.
01:34:25After you've played until at least Sequence 6 of the game, a bizarre, hilarious easter
01:34:30egg can be uncovered using a classic video game cheat code.
01:34:34If you visit your homestead in Davenport after the sixth sequence, you can take cover at
01:34:38a certain wall at the back of the house and whistle, which will attract a turkey.
01:34:43The turkey will follow you around until you can actually interact with it by feeding it.
01:34:48If players target the turkey and input the Konami code, up up down down left right left
01:34:53right B A, the turkey will transform into an assassin, with a tiny hood appearing on
01:34:59its head.
01:35:00Perhaps a reference to previous franchise entries visiting Turkey, or just a silly easter
01:35:04egg.
01:35:05Either way, we liked it.
01:35:061.
01:35:07The Calendar Man Puzzle – Batman Arkham City
01:35:10The Batman Arkham series has provided us with several of the best superhero games ever created.
01:35:16From the excellent atmospheric Asylum to the sprawling open-world Arkham City, there are
01:35:21many nods to some of our favorite DC comic characters throughout the games, along with
01:35:25the assortment of Riddler trophies that we spent hours trying to collect.
01:35:29But one secret is so elaborate that many of us would never have encountered it.
01:35:34The Calendar Man is located in a holding cell in the basement of the Solomon Wayne Courthouse.
01:35:39On the wall in the room, a calendar is present, with various dates circled.
01:35:44If you come back to the peculiar villain on each of these dates, he will deliver a unique
01:35:48monologue about an incident he caused in the past.
01:35:52Most people will likely not return 12 times throughout a given year, so changing the time
01:35:56and date settings on your system will allow you to experience all of his stories and unlock
01:36:01the associated achievement.
01:36:03Now this is obscure enough, but there's also a secret date that went uncovered for a really
01:36:08long time.
01:36:09If you set your date to the day the development studio Rocksteady was founded, December 13th,
01:36:152004, the Calendar Man will deliver a unique speech, warning that the end of days is coming,
01:36:21foreshadowing some of the events of the next entry in the series.
01:36:26If there's one thing the open-world genre excels at, it's pure, sorry, what?
01:36:30Surprise.
01:36:31You can hoover up a few days worth of sidequests or embark on an 80-hour character grind with
01:36:35one hell of a payoff, but the question of what's around that next corner only really
01:36:40lands with all-out open-air freedom.
01:36:42With that in mind, we're currently seeing two definable approaches to open-world game
01:36:46design.
01:36:47Either you go down the Ubisoft and Sony route peppering landscapes with icons, signposted
01:36:51collectibles, quests, etc., or you prefer the Nintendo-from-software approach, gargantuan
01:36:56worlds filled with things to see, do and interact with, where navigation is entirely
01:37:01on you.
01:37:02No matter which you pick, both give developers plenty of opportunities to throw in the occasional
01:37:06creature-based curveball, a mini-boss or what-the-hell-is-that style reveal that leaves you dealing with an
01:37:12encounter or scenario you really didn't expect.
01:37:14I'm Scott from WhatCulture.com, and these are 8 Terrifying Monsters Hidden in Open World
01:37:19Video Games
01:37:208.
01:37:21The Giant Squid
01:37:22Assassin's Creed Black Flag
01:37:24Possibly the most beloved Assassin's Creed of them all, Black Flag's world felt impossibly
01:37:28large, whilst being endlessly inviting.
01:37:30Scores of tiny islands stretched past the horizon, character and pirate ship upgrades
01:37:34were left, right and centre, and you had the ocean's depths to plunder for even rarer
01:37:39treasures.
01:37:40Enter underwater gameplay that was genuinely enjoyable, letting Edward Kenway navigate
01:37:44shipwrecks, fend off animals, admire things like light-blocking whales up above you, and
01:37:49honestly, encounter some things that were genuinely terrifying.
01:37:52Just like a callback to Assassin's Creed 2's random AF giant squid, travel to the
01:37:56Antokha wreck and you'll see a tentacle whip through what's left of the ship as
01:38:00you approach.
01:38:01Providing a creepy jump scare in the moment, hover around the window it leaves through
01:38:05and the squid will appear in full, tackling and killing the giant whale right in front
01:38:10of you.
01:38:117.
01:38:12A Planet-Sized Anglerfish
01:38:13Outer Wilds
01:38:14Outer Wilds plays an Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild style hand of nudging you in a certain
01:38:18direction and letting the joy of whatever you then come across propel you the rest of
01:38:23the way.
01:38:24Playing as the Hearthians, a wannabe spacefaring race who occasionally send willing members
01:38:27of their group across the stars, it's totally up to you where you head first.
01:38:31Pick one direction and you might find a teleporting black hole spitting you out somewhere completely
01:38:35different.
01:38:36Another and you'll find a set of twin planets trading their surface's worth of sand thanks
01:38:40to cyclical gravity spitting it back and forth.
01:38:43Best slash worst of all though, especially if you encounter it before comprehending what
01:38:46you're supposed to do like I did, is a whole planet of giant anglerfish.
01:38:51Supremely terrifying creatures on this earth, never mind an alien version with another landmass
01:38:56inside its mouth, venturing inside the dark bramble planet has you greeted by a huge set
01:39:00of teeth biting back out the darkness to consume you whole.
01:39:046.
01:39:05Hydras
01:39:06Dark Souls
01:39:07From Software have quickly become the masters of hiding the best and worst things imaginable
01:39:11just around the corner.
01:39:12From placing ambushing enemies in shadows to tucking a game winning item away in a hidden
01:39:16treasure chest, you're incentivised and should remain wary of every single step taken.
01:39:21Whilst we've all got our personal picks for which enemy made a horrifying impression,
01:39:25Dark Souls 1's Hydras take the cake for something only getting worse as you get closer.
01:39:30With two examples both equally imposing as hell, your first is often seen through the
01:39:34gaps of the trees while wandering Darkroot Basin.
01:39:37That far off creature actually being a multi-necked serpent firing all those energy blasts is one
01:39:42hell of a realisation, though things do get worse if you wander farther from the beaten
01:39:46path later on and end up in Ash Lake.
01:39:49This more formidable version of the Hydra has splash damage attacks in literal waves,
01:39:53wiping you out with any one of its heads if you're standing in the wrong place.
01:39:57Combined the Hydras are both badgers of honour only a portion of the Souls fanbase will seek
01:40:01out and conquer.
01:40:025.
01:40:03Biological Horror
01:40:04No Man's Sky
01:40:05No Man's Sky was always supposed to be a galaxy of endless potential.
01:40:09Yes, that initial first year of launch was disappointing for many, but Hello Games have
01:40:13bulked out their procedurally generated universe into a concrete framework now supporting scores
01:40:18of hefty expansions.
01:40:19One is the Desolation update, where you'll just come across derelict ships floating through
01:40:24space, housing all sorts of mutated alien things inside, having done whatever your mind
01:40:28then conjures to the rest of the crew.
01:40:31Another addition that came from the No Man's Sky next update though were Whispering Eggs,
01:40:35valuable looking collectibles strewn across various planets.
01:40:38Keep in mind, years before Desolation and even as Next rolled out, there was zero reason
01:40:43to associate anything horror based with the otherwise Asimovian delights of No Man's
01:40:47Sky's art design.
01:40:48Touch a Whispering Egg though and suddenly as the screen flashes saying Biological Horror
01:40:53Detected, out of the ground come practically a swarm of Xenomorphs.
01:40:57Called Biological Horrors to avoid trademark infringement, these horrible aliens will chase
01:41:01after you and press themselves against any windows you try to take cover behind, forever
01:41:06waiting for an opportunity to take you out.
01:41:084.
01:41:09A Clicker – Dying Light
01:41:11Nowhere near enough praise really gets thrown Dying Light's way for its depiction of infected
01:41:15zombies.
01:41:16Yes, the first person parkour, yes those slick animations, chunky combat and awesome vertical
01:41:21world making it an instant classic, but having enemy aggression shift on a dime once the
01:41:25sun goes down is a stroke of genius, and something I wish way more teams would've taken note
01:41:30of.
01:41:31Anyway, amongst this smorgasbord of moans and leaps is one hell of an easter egg that
01:41:34doubles as pure nightmare fuel as it appears from nowhere.
01:41:38None other than a Clicker straight from The Last of Us is hiding in the game's town
01:41:41hall, though you can only trigger it by activating Sidequest the Bunker.
01:41:45A transformation from a regular enemy after you've fought your way through most of the
01:41:49level, this is the closest Dying Light gets to all out body horror alongside more formidable
01:41:53AI that swarm you everywhere else.
01:41:562.
01:41:57Slaughter Spines and Tide Rippers – Horizon Forbidden West
01:42:00As the best showcase of PlayStation 5 tech yet, Horizon's second instalment has a
01:42:04gorgeous art style and tons of side missions, creatures, unlockables and gear to find.
01:42:09Guerrilla truly went all out crafting something we'll be playing for another five years
01:42:13before the supposed end of the trilogy, and in a post-post-apocalypse ran by an AI overlord
01:42:18trying to replicate the fauna of Earth's history, that means all sorts of dinosaur
01:42:22slash animal hybrids to take down.
01:42:25While Forbidden West is easier than Zero Dome when it comes to all out combat, there are
01:42:28some super rare creatures that eventually pop up in the story, roaming the plains regardless.
01:42:33One is the Tide Ripper, largely inspired by real world plesiosaurs, and another is the
01:42:38Slaughter Spine, a full on combo of every bipedal t-rex looking beast you can think
01:42:43of.
01:42:44With only five Tide Rippers spawned in the whole world and three places you can find
01:42:47a Slaughter Spine, the latter even needs you to go hunting at night, so make sure you're
01:42:51prepared for what's always one hell of a fight.
01:42:551.
01:42:56Spider Hand, Elden Ring Elden Ring is home to a great many disgusting
01:43:00creatures, however nothing I've encountered in my 40 plus hours of game time so far has
01:43:04come close to the sheer skin crawl vibe of the Spider Hands.
01:43:08Located in Carrier Manor to the initial north-west of the map before that thing just keeps getting
01:43:12bigger and bigger, you'll first see these tarantula aping finger demons hanging off
01:43:16the walls.
01:43:17No problem, you think, exploring the ground instead, they'll just stay up there and
01:43:21I'll stay down here.
01:43:22Well, that doesn't remain the case for very long.
01:43:24Besides smaller spiders chasing you around and some larger ones dotted around the place
01:43:28too, Spider Hands actually bury themselves in the ground and pretend to be regular items.
01:43:34Pick the collectible up without scanning for exposed fingertips alongside and the whole
01:43:38palm of this thing will appear, grab and likely kill you in one horrible animation.
01:43:43Video games are almost always primarily interested in you having a good time and making sure
01:43:48you have all of the tools you need to accomplish that.
01:43:51So maybe that's why sometimes developers seem to want to let off steam by implementing
01:43:55cruel features designed to thwart you.
01:43:58While certainly not every entry on this list is a personal attack on the player, they certainly
01:44:02feel like they are.
01:44:04And in the time consuming and sprawling genre of open world games, there are as many avenues
01:44:09for developers to help you as there are ones to hurt you.
01:44:12Whether intentional or not, all of these entries stung in one way or another, so we've grouped
01:44:17them all together here so we can all have a grumble.
01:44:19I'm Jess from WhatCulture and here are 10 Cruel Tricks Video Games Played on Open World
01:44:23Players.
01:44:2410.
01:44:25The Castle is in Another Video Game – Cyberpunk 2077
01:44:29This particular cruel trick may have become less prevalent in recent years with the advance
01:44:34of video game tech, creativity and graphics enhancements, but it's still a pain to encounter
01:44:38whenever you do.
01:44:40Of course the boundaries of an open world game have to be set somewhere, but sometimes
01:44:44it just really seems like an environmental artist got a little too excited that day and
01:44:49put something really enticing just outside the limits of the actual playable game world.
01:44:54So you'll be moseying along down the street, spot an interesting looking mountain or cabin,
01:44:58try to make your way there, before either being knocked back by a prompt or an invisible
01:45:02wall letting you know that particular bit is not part of the video game.
01:45:06That then leaves disappointed gamers wondering if said bit will be included as DLC, or if
01:45:11it's just a particularly enticing but futile bit of scenery outside the game world perimeter.
01:45:16Plenty of open world games do this, but a good recent example is in Cyberpunk 2077,
01:45:22where you might have spotted a very enticing bit of scenery in the distance, specifically
01:45:27a rocket ship that appears to be taking off.
01:45:29If you're anything like me, you might have found yourself jumping into the water and
01:45:32swimming towards that rocket ship for like 30-40 minutes of time, only to realise it's
01:45:37actually inaccessible.
01:45:39And no, I'm not salty about that huge waste of time at all.
01:45:439.
01:45:44Side quests due to main story progression, Dying Light 2
01:45:48Loads of sprawling open world RPGs are culprits of secretly gating you out of side quests
01:45:52if you head too far down the main path.
01:45:55The issue here is when there's so much side content, much of which isn't signposted, and
01:46:00the player in question happens to be a completionist who hates the idea of missing anything at all.
01:46:04So me, and you if you relate to that last bit.
01:46:07In open world games, where the things you do in the main quest take you to new locations,
01:46:11permanently alter old ones, or might even lead to the deaths of important characters,
01:46:16many of us have trained ourselves to do all the side stuff first before we make too much
01:46:20headway into the main missions.
01:46:22In Dying Light 2, for instance, there are multiple side missions you can miss out on
01:46:25or fail entirely if you opt to take on the main story mission first.
01:46:30Never be fooled into thinking just because this is an open world game with a whole buffet
01:46:34of different things to do, and you can choose to do any of them you want, that you won't
01:46:38be punished for doing things out of order.
01:46:40Unless you're following a guide, it's very easy to accidentally progress too far and
01:46:44lock yourself out of side content that could only trigger in certain earlier world states.
01:46:49And checking your journal only to see some of your quests have mysteriously disappeared
01:46:53is a pretty crappy feeling.
01:46:55It's probably fine if you're not a crazy completionist, but if you are, we can absolutely classify
01:47:00this one as a cruel trick.
01:47:028.
01:47:03Psychic Guards – The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
01:47:06The Hero of Kvatch works hard, but it's arguable that the guards of Cyrodiil work
01:47:10even harder, because boy does word spread like wildfire among the making-sure-you-don't-violate-the-lore
01:47:17community.
01:47:18Someone needs to investigate the crime reporting systems between Oblivion guards, because they
01:47:22are wildly effective.
01:47:24Kill off a dude in the middle of nowhere and the expert network of lore enforcement in
01:47:27Cyrodiil ensures that each and every soldier will know of your crimes, pursue you relentlessly,
01:47:32and run right up to you if you dare enter their vicinity, letting you know you've been
01:47:36placed under arrest.
01:47:37Psychic Guards can be found in Assassin's Creed games and Grand Theft Auto has its own
01:47:41version of these dudes in their Psychic Police, though I suppose at least they have radios.
01:47:45Better pay the court a fine or serve your sentence, because you are not getting away
01:47:48from these guys.
01:47:507.
01:47:51This specific quest is on a timer – Mass Effect 2
01:47:54Open world games are a buffet of quests, side activities, repeating gigs, NPCs to meet,
01:47:59you name it, there's tons to do.
01:48:01So it makes sense that almost always, unless otherwise specified, you can expect that you're
01:48:05not on a timer to do any of these things.
01:48:08Unless there's the urgency of a Majora's Mask-style timer ticking, you can safely assume
01:48:13that you tackle things as you like and when you like.
01:48:15That is why it is especially cruel when there's a specific mission or event that does require
01:48:20you to complete it in a timely manner, particularly when the whole rest of the game has not worked
01:48:25that way.
01:48:26The most egregious example of this is probably Mass Effect 2's suicide mission, where you
01:48:30can actually get a lot of the crew killed by taking too long to kick off this last stand
01:48:35main mission.
01:48:36As soon as you finish off the Reaper IFF mission, you'll be on a hidden timer to get your ass
01:48:41in gear and go through the Omega 4 relay to save your crew.
01:48:45Decide to do a few more missions beforehand and you'll find even more of your crew have
01:48:49died while you were dawdling.
01:48:51Harsh.
01:48:526.
01:48:53Killing off, you're ride or die – Cyberpunk 2077
01:48:56One of the nastiest things an open world video game can do to you is help you bond with a
01:48:59charismatic, kind or delightful companion, only to unceremoniously kill them off.
01:49:05Final Fantasy and Cyberpunk 2077 are both culprits of this particular entry, as they
01:49:10both use excellent writing to endear you to a character that you'd assume you'd never
01:49:14be saying goodbye to, only to flip the switch on you in the cruelest of ways.
01:49:19Okay, now there are spoilers for Cyberpunk in this next bit, so if for some reason you
01:49:22don't want those, come meet us at the next entry.
01:49:24This one was especially puzzling as the character in question, Jackie Wells, featured in all
01:49:29of the marketing material for the game and seemed like your ride or die bestie, only
01:49:34to be killed off relatively early in the game.
01:49:36This has ongoing implications for V, who spends a lot of the game processing Jackie's death
01:49:41as he continues to come up in her journey.
01:49:435.
01:49:44Don't fall in – The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
01:49:47As you'd expect, there are plenty of open world games that feature a ton of different
01:49:51biomes, and some of these are huge bodies of water.
01:49:54Occasionally you won't be able to get in at all, but in games like The Witcher 3, your
01:49:58bigger problem is often getting out.
01:50:00A particularly cruel trick here is in designing a game with a super-powered mutant protagonist
01:50:05who has an enormous amount of trouble escaping water without a steady incline akin to the
01:50:10accessibility ramp of your local pool.
01:50:12Any Witcher player can probably tell you stories about tumbling into water from a not-beach
01:50:17and being unable to escape for some time.
01:50:19This is all the more infuriating when you're hustling about, trying to get smuggler's
01:50:23caches, or a bunch of sirens have just sunk your boat, so you're trying to get to the

01:50:31Patches – Dark Souls This entry is just Patches.
01:50:34Patches is the cruel trick that's played on you in Dark Souls.
01:50:37While it's lovely to meet one of the few creatures in this horror scape that aren't
01:50:40trying to claw you to death immediately upon seeing you, Patches may as well be, because
01:50:44this tricksy guy tries to kill you a ton by convincing you to fall into or off dangerous
01:50:49terrain and then convince you he was just playing, begs your forgiveness, and has the
01:50:54gall to ask if you're still mates.
01:50:56Of course, friends are hard to come by in Lordran, so you'll probably give him a pass,
01:51:00even though he is also very much trying to kill you too, just in a less obvious way.
01:51:04In case you did take a shine to the trickster, you'll be happy to hear there are iterations
01:51:08of him in every single Soulsborne game, right up to and including Elden Ring where, you
01:51:13guessed it, he's up to shenanigans.
01:51:163.
01:51:17Your Failures – Caught in Slow-Mo – The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
01:51:20I'm sure Bethesda only meant well when they let you see your kills in awesome slow-motion
01:51:24animation, except that slow-motion isn't no-motion.
01:51:28So say you're attacking with a bow and arrow, or a similarly small projectile, and there's
01:51:33a chance you're in a sick zoomed-in cutscene just to watch yourself miss.
01:51:37Skyrim's arrows so often have a mind of their own, even the game doesn't seem to be aware
01:51:41of the fact that you can miss.
01:51:43While this one is absolutely cruel, it's probably due to a programming failure and
01:51:47not the devs sitting around wanting to make you look like a dummy.
01:51:50This cruel trick gets even nastier and, let's face it, more entertaining, because maxing
01:51:55out the archery tree in Skyrim will grant you the Bullseye skill, which can give you
01:51:59a chance to paralyse enemies with your shots.
01:52:01That sounds all well and good, except upon getting paralysed they fall to the ground,
01:52:06meaning they've moved position after the skill has been triggered, meaning the arrow you
01:52:10just shot off right at their brain place has now sailed right over the top of them.
01:52:14Not a waste of skill points at all.

01:52:17Gear Up – Get Captured Anyway – Far Cry 5
01:52:20Plenty of games commit this cardinal sin where they set up the imminent engagement with a
01:52:23pile of foreshadowing, that as you understand, you're really going to have to pull out
01:52:27all the stops to prepare for this one.
01:52:29So you pop your buffs, use your best consumables, buy that gear you've been eyeing off, and
01:52:34steal yourself for what's to come.
01:52:36And that's where you find out very quickly that this wasn't going to be a real battle
01:52:40at all, and it was instead a scripted fail state you were never intended to be able to
01:52:44beat.
01:52:45This happens repeatedly in Far Cry 5, where you'd be forgiven for assuming you can win
01:52:50the encounter that tells you to avoid getting hit by the hallucinogenic bliss bullets so
01:52:54as not to get kidnapped.
01:52:56But try as you might, any damage you take during or even after this encounter will initiate
01:53:01the kidnapping cutscene.
01:53:02Even if you take out every single enemy and don't take a blip of damage in the entire
01:53:07encounter, the scripted cutscene will still run, telling you you got kidnapped.
01:53:11Whether these scripted failures kick you to a game over screen, or progress the narrative
01:53:15as is the case in Far Cry 5, it's not really relevant to how burned you'll feel by the
01:53:20amount of time and money you sunk into preparation for a battle that didn't even get off the
01:53:24ground.
01:53:25Number 1.
01:53:26Tempting you with a shortcut.
01:53:27Death Stranding.
01:53:28Everyone will have a different example of an open world game that tempted them with
01:53:31a shortcut that they decided to take, and then deeply regretted 15-25-60 minutes later
01:53:37when they found themselves jammed on the side of an almost entirely vertical mountain, knowing
01:53:42that they would have been at their location by now if they'd just followed the GPS.
01:53:46But we've all done it, you set your next location on the map, and then when you load back in,
01:53:50you see that the GPS coordinates are sending you in the opposite direction of where you
01:53:54want to go.
01:53:55So you tell yourself, okay well the fastest way between two points is just to go in a
01:53:59straight line, and you set off as such.
01:54:01Even if there's a mountain in the way, or a barricade, or a town, or a body of water.
01:54:06Perhaps the most brutal punisher of this mentality is Death Stranding, where I vividly remember
01:54:10spending hours of my life trying to take what I had thought to be a shortcut, only
01:54:14to find myself out of ropes and ladders halfway up a waterfall.
01:54:18In a game with arduous traversal mechanics, you'd be forgiven for trying to get somewhere
01:54:22more directly, but in Death Stranding, a shorter route almost always means a practically impossible
01:54:27one.
01:54:28Which you'll realise for yourself when all your cargo is destroyed and you're stuck
01:54:31in a nasty spot of timefall.
01:54:33Okay, I'm gonna level with you, admittedly this one is kind of on us and our hubris,
01:54:38but I know so many of us have lost so much time to trying to do this, that let's just
01:54:42go ahead and agree it's the cruelest trick a video game has played on any of us.
