Keeping the lights on—rather than creating a fake vibe—is the way to guard this place in this fragile era. There are known and unknown danger out there--we need to keep ourselves safe with both light outside and inside.
Keeping the lights on—made up of videos and photos—is a series of responses to some make-believe vibe and something more complicated facing a city that make some to believe it's been dead.
But it hasn’t reached its end—its consciousness is traversing dimensions known and unknown and continuing to change in shape and form during its journey.
Along this journey, the city and lights from different homes create its own different vibe, as shown in the videos.
And in one video episode, the city pokes fun at a color-changing egg-shaped object that it saw before near a waterfront by turning itself into a spherical object itself (it can’t turn itself into an egg-shaped object!).
Creative process
The series was made when I began to take a photo of the view outside my living room windows almost every night from November 2023 to March 2024 to see if people were home and switched on their lights or they were outside enjoying some fake vibe.
I layered the photos weekly and monthly as well as creating an aggregate photo that layered the monthly photos.
