00:00Simone Biles' daring Yurchenko double pike vault Thursday evening during the women's
00:05all-around final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 set her apart from the field.
00:12It always has.
00:14The 27-year-old is the first woman to compete the vault, a round-off onto the springboard,
00:20back handspring onto the table, and then two-and-a-half flips backward in a picked position.
00:26It was named for her and given a 6.4 difficulty value at last year's Artistic Gymnastics World
00:32Championships in Antwerp.
00:35In the all-around final, she earned a massive 15.766, the highest score of the competition,
00:42giving her a cushion that would ultimately lift her to the gold medal.
00:46The vault almost didn't happen Thursday.
00:49I wasn't planning on it, Biles admitted afterward, but Biles knew she needed it.
00:55She says she was feeling the pressure of Brazil's greatest female Olympian ever, Rebika
01:00Andrade, twice the Olympic all-around silver medalist.
01:04Thank God we did the double pike today, said Biles after capturing her second Olympic all-around
01:11title, the first gymnast in history to take two non-consecutively.
01:17I just knew how phenomenal of an athlete she is.
01:20On each event, we are very similar in scores, so I was like, okay, I think I have to bring
01:26out the big guns this time, Biles concluded.
01:31The friendliest of rivalries the two share a mutual respect with both saying the other
01:35has pushed them to new heights.
01:39Knowing that I gave Simone a bit of work is cool, right?
01:42Said Andrade, laughing.
01:44She's the best in the world, Simone is a phenomenon.
01:49We didn't see it just here, but also in many competitions that she has done, I'm so proud
01:54of being able to compete by her side.
01:58It's pushed them to new levels of competition, too.
02:00I don't want to compete with Rebika no more.
02:03I'm tired.
02:04She's way too close, Biles joked.
02:07I've never had an athlete that close, so it definitely put me on my toes and brought out
02:12the best athlete in myself.
02:16Biles has faced smaller margins of victory, including in 2014 when Romania's Larisa Ierdeg
02:22came within, for sixth six of the world title.
02:26But since her Rio 2016 triumph, no one has come within a point and a half until this
02:32week.
02:34When Biles nearly missed the low bar on a flip from high on the uneven bars in the second
02:38rotation, it was her massive vault that buoyed her, keeping her just 2-6-7 behind the Brazilian.
