Cliff Richard - An Audience With Cliff Richard - 1999 - Pt #2

  • last month
An Audience with... is a long running British entertainment television show produced by London Weekend Television (now part of ITV Studios), in which a host, usually a singer or comedian, performs for an invited audience of celebrity guests, interspersed with questions from the audience, in a lighthearted revue/tribute style.

On 13 November 1999 London Weekend recorded episode #30, An Audience With Cliff Richard. Cliff's audience show also had some of his own guests who performed with him. This is a really great entertaining show with Cliff singing many of his classic hits. Something I think many will enjoy. Play on!

00:00Thank you very much indeed. As far as I'm concerned this is a special evening.
00:25It's going to be an interesting night for me because I'm used to sort of singing the songs
00:29that you will hear. They kind of span the 40 odd years that I've been singing.
00:34What I have never actually done before is had this many celebrities around.
00:38Now these folk up here, I can understand why they're here really.
00:45But the rest of you, you've got nothing better to do obviously.
00:50They don't get out much.
00:53Anyway, you must have seen the other shows in the series.
00:56Chances of asking questions comes up at regular intervals and this is one of those intervals.
01:01So if there's anybody with a question, you can make it as personal as you want,
01:04as long as I can be personal too.
01:09We've not met, have we? Hi, how are you?
01:13I just wanted to ask, what's been the most enjoyable part of your career and who are your inspirations?
01:19Tonight and you.
01:24I've been so lucky actually. I've had a wonderfully charmed career and I've enjoyed all of it.
01:31But you know, the inspiration came because way, way back in 1954 or 5,
01:37I heard Bill Haley and then Elvis Presley and I've often said to the press that really,
01:42had there been no Elvis, then I'm sure there'd have been no Cliff Richard.
01:46I dare to say even they wouldn't have been The Beatles either.
01:49They'd have been rock and roll but it would have taken a different form.
01:52You know, Elvis was the prototype. He was the one that sort of did the shapes originally.
02:05But he was my great inspiration. Absolute wonderful inspiration. Thank you.
02:09Yes?
02:11Cliff, back in the 60s when you were making those interesting shapes,
02:15you were regarded as the bad boy of pop, were you not?
02:18I was.
02:19They said that you were too sexy to appear on television.
02:21I was.
02:22And you curled your lip a lot. Can you still curl your lip?
02:27I just wondered whether that is the real Cliff and you've been suppressing it ever since.
02:32It was the real Cliff but you know what, it's like times change.
02:36And the face changes too unfortunately.
02:40The lip curl was a lot easier to do when I had more of it.
02:44I can still do a kind of...
02:52Any more questions, any more questions?
02:53Yes, Sir Cliff, Sir John.
02:54Sir John, thank you for coming.
02:57Cliff, I want to ask you one question, to be quite honest.
03:00How did you feel when you were standing in front of the Queen?
03:04Were you a bit nervous?
03:06Yeah, I mean, you were, I don't know, actors seem to be able to cover all that quite easily.
03:12I found I was really terrified.
03:14And also, did you find it, I found it very emotional.
03:16The whole business about the knighthood came off the wall.
03:19Because yes, if you're an actor you could perhaps expect a knighthood or a businessman or a politician.
03:23But pop singers didn't get them.
03:26So it was a complete shock when in fact it was suggested I might get one if the Queen said okay.
03:30So I stood there but my three sisters were in the audience watching and my heart pumped.
03:35And I found it very emotional.
03:37And I, you know, you have to, she dubs you, she doesn't say arise Sir John or Sir Cliff.
03:42And they said she won't say anything until you've stood up, leaned forward, she puts the medal around your neck.
03:46And then she speaks to you.
03:48And she sort of said something like, I can't, something like it's been a long time coming.
03:52And I babbled, I have to say, I could hardly get, I sort of said, Mum.
03:59And I said to my sisters afterwards, I bet she thought to herself, you know,
04:04we should have given this to a doctor or at least someone who could speak English.
04:08So I really felt really bad that I couldn't put on a better performance.
04:12But it was the most wonderful thrill of my life.
04:14Thank you very much.
04:16Hi Cliff.
04:17Hey.
04:18You're looking great Cliff.
04:20Jess, you do as always.
04:22A lot of people think this is my dimple, it's actually my belly button.
04:26As one sex symbol to another, how do you keep your youthful good looks?
04:40Oh, it's not really a secret.
04:43I mean, if I had a secret, I'm sure you'd agree with this, you'd bottle it and sell it, wouldn't you?
04:47No, the only way to look good, I think, is a regular intake, probably intravenously if you can get it, of vitamins.
04:54The occasional facelift.
04:58And that's all there is to it, really.
05:00We all do the same thing.
05:10I'll sing a couple more things.
05:11I've paid for this band, I might as well use them.
05:15We've stuck two of our songs together.
05:17I'm sure you'll know them, and even more hopefully, I hope you'll like them.
05:40Sorry to disturb you
05:44But I was in the neighborhood
05:48It's about a friend out of picture
05:50Could you take a look?
05:57I appreciate you're busy
06:00And time's not your own
06:04Yeah, maybe it would be better if I telephoned
06:09Gary doesn't live here anymore
06:13Gary used to rule on the second floor
06:17Oh, they're sorry that she left
06:19No forward in her dress
06:21That was known to me
06:25Gary doesn't live here anymore
06:29Gary used to rule on the second floor
06:33Oh, they're sorry that she left
06:35No forward in her dress
06:37It's a mystery
07:02I've had nothing but bad luck
07:05Since the day I saw the cat at my door
07:10So I came in to you, sweet lady
07:14And answered in your mystical call
07:19Crystal ball on the table
07:23Showing the future to the past
07:27Same cat with an evil eye
07:30And I knew it was a spell she cast
07:35She's just a devil woman
07:37With evil on her mind
07:39Beware the devil woman
07:41She's gonna get you
07:43She's just a devil woman
07:45With evil on her mind
07:47Beware the devil woman
07:49She's gonna get you from behind
07:59Give me the ring on your finger
08:03Let me see the lines on your hands
08:08I can see me a top dog stranger
08:11Giving you what you hadn't planned
08:16I drank the potion she offered me
08:20I found myself on the floor
08:24Then I looked in those big green eyes
08:27And I wondered what I gave them for
08:32She's just a devil woman
08:34With evil on her mind
08:36Beware the devil woman
08:38She's gonna get you
08:40She's just a devil woman
08:42With evil on her mind
08:44Beware the devil woman
08:46She's gonna get you from behind
08:51From behind
08:56She's just a devil woman
08:58With evil on her mind
09:00Beware the devil woman
09:02She's gonna get you
09:04She's just a devil woman
09:06With evil on her mind
09:08Beware the devil woman
09:10She's gonna get you
