00:00:30Steve, are you dressed?
00:00:35Hey, come on, it's late. I've got to get home.
00:00:38I don't want to be put on restriction again.
00:00:44Steve!
00:00:51Steve!
00:00:55Steve!
00:01:00Steve!
00:01:23Steve?
00:01:25Are you there?
00:01:27Don't scare me. I don't think it's very funny.
00:01:30This place gives me the creeps.
00:01:33Steve, I warn you, I'll never come here with you again.
00:01:38Steve, come on, where are you?
00:01:42Hey, if you don't quit it, I swear I'm going to split without you.
00:01:47Steve!
00:01:50Steven, where are you? Please answer me.
00:01:53Steve!
00:02:23Steve!
00:02:53Steve!
00:03:23Steve!
00:03:53Steve!
00:04:23Steve!
00:04:54Steve!
00:05:10Bob?
00:05:13Bob? Bob, where are you?
00:05:16Bob!
00:05:19Honey, you still have to pack away your toys.
00:05:22And which ones are you going to take with you?
00:05:25Bob, I'm talking to you.
00:05:27Bob!
00:05:29Bob, will you please wake up?
00:05:32When Daddy gets home, we...
00:05:34Mommy!
00:05:35What's the matter?
00:05:37Mommy, why does that girl keep telling me I shouldn't go there?
00:05:49What girl, Bob?
00:05:51The one standing at the window in that house.
00:06:00At the window, huh?
00:06:03Look, we don't have time to play games now, honey.
00:06:05Daddy will be home any minute. Now, where's the...
00:06:07I guess she had something to do.
00:06:09Let's just say you never saw her in the first place, right?
00:06:12Yes, I did. I saw her face.
00:06:15She was waving and I could read her mouth.
00:06:18And did she say anything?
00:06:20No.
00:06:21No?
00:06:22No.
00:06:23No.
00:06:24No.
00:06:25No.
00:06:26No.
00:06:27No.
00:06:28No.
00:06:29No.
00:06:30No.
00:06:31And did she say anything to you?
00:06:33Yep, she said that I shouldn't go over there.
00:06:36Why did she say that, Mommy?
00:06:38Well, I don't know, Bobby.
00:06:40Maybe.
00:06:41Because she didn't want you to have to pack away your toys the way you were supposed to.
00:06:45Come on, ladies, let's get to dinner.
00:06:47I wasn't tricking you, Mommy.
00:07:01Ah...
00:07:20May.
00:07:27It's May.
00:07:29Time to go, May.
00:07:32Time to go home.
00:07:38No.
00:07:39I can't go now.
00:07:41It's important.
00:07:44I can't.
00:07:50I'm leaving tomorrow.
00:07:52Lucy still hasn't made up her mind.
00:07:54You have a lot of guts.
00:07:56Picking up the reins of someone else's research at its most critical point like this.
00:07:59Especially when that someone else was the scientist of Harry Peterson's caliber.
00:08:03Well, I'll tell you, Boyle.
00:08:04You're the only man who can keep this project from going down the drain.
00:08:09I mean, apart from the 5,000 more you're going to be earning a year,
00:08:12you were Peterson's protege, and also, I believe, one of his best friends.
00:08:16And I know what you're itching to clear up is suicide.
00:08:19It's difficult to explain, but I know you'll get to the bottom of it.
00:08:23Well, I'll try.
00:08:25The important thing is when this huge project gets published,
00:08:27it'll have just your name on it.
00:08:29Think what authorship can mean.
00:08:30Yeah.
00:08:31Publish or pull down.
00:08:33Yeah.
00:08:35What do you think Eric would have done in a shield like that?
00:08:38Well, I don't know.
00:08:40No idea.
00:08:42Apprehensions?
00:08:43Yeah.
00:08:45It's scary.
00:08:47He organized the project.
00:08:50Got it underway.
00:08:51I bet he did.
00:08:52And then, oh, well, no reason.
00:08:55Abandoned everything.
00:08:56Slaughtered his mistress, and...
00:08:59And there he was, researching suicide.
00:09:03The times we have to live in.
00:09:05Taxi!
00:09:13Well, Boyle, school is over.
00:09:15I'll drive up there and see you.
00:09:19I knew it would be.
00:09:20I adore New England.
00:09:22I'll be looking forward to it, sir.
00:09:23Bye-bye.
00:09:39Norman, where are my plants?
00:09:41Penny's going to water them.
00:09:42They're pretty.
00:09:43Oh, for God's sake, New England's full of plants.
00:09:46Be careful, give it to me.
00:09:47Oh, trust Penny.
00:09:48What do you think?
00:09:49Everything here?
00:09:50I think everything's here,
00:09:51but I really don't know how we're going to fit it all in.
00:09:53Think positive.
00:09:54By the way, have you been to see Mrs. Peterson?
00:09:58No need to.
00:10:01All his reference material is right there in the library.
00:10:05Well, after all, he was a colleague of yours.
00:10:09Let's just say we worked in the same field.
00:10:12But, darling,
00:10:13you could have at least gone to pay your condolences.
00:10:16What do you say to a widow whose husband had another woman
00:10:19and who one fine day slaughtered that other woman,
00:10:21after which he hanged himself?
00:10:23Then, after Mommy changed her mind for the tenth time,
00:10:47the place was already rented.
00:10:48My home, huh?
00:10:49So where were you going to live?
00:10:50In an even nicer place, thanks to Norman.
00:10:52a nicer place, thanks to Professor Mueller.
00:10:54Otherwise, you'd sleep in a tent.

00:14:26How are you holding on there?
00:14:41It's getting hot.
00:14:45Behind you, on the other side of the street.
00:14:52Hello.
00:14:53Hello.
00:14:54My name is May.
00:14:56I've been expecting you.
00:14:59My name is Bob.
00:15:01My daddy's here to do some research.
00:15:04Yeah, I know.
00:15:07However, I thought I told you we're at failure not to come.
00:15:11I did my best, only mommy wouldn't listen to me.
00:15:14Parents never listen.
00:15:15They always do what they want.
00:15:17You shouldn't have come, Bob.
00:15:22So now, you two just follow me.
00:15:23Okay.
00:15:24That's my car there.
00:15:26Where's...
00:15:45Hmm?
00:15:50Mrs. Giddleson, hold on a second.
00:15:53Go.
00:16:00Mommy, mommy, I saw the girl from the hotel.
00:16:03Why did you get out of the car?
00:16:04See the doll she gave me to play with?
00:16:06She wanted to talk.
00:16:07She lives here too, you know that?
00:16:09Stay there, not to move.
00:16:10But she called to me.
00:16:12What else?
00:16:14They promised to come by Friday at the latest
00:16:15to pick the phone up.
00:16:16I guess that about does it.
00:16:18Thank you very much.
00:16:19Not at all, my pleasure.
00:16:20Well, I hope you enjoy your stay
00:16:22and your research, Mr. Boyle.
00:16:23Thank you, I hope so too.
00:16:25Don't worry, as soon as I get back to town,
00:16:27I'll find you that babysitter.
00:16:28That's very kind of you.
00:16:29If there's anything else, you know where to find me.
00:16:31Okay.
00:16:33Damn tombstone.
00:16:47Well, house in the woods, quiet.
00:16:52You're right.
00:16:54Shades of Walden Farn.
00:16:56I'm sure you'll like it.
00:16:58I'm sure you'll like it.
00:17:00Shades of Walden Farn.
00:17:13Norman?
00:17:14Yeah?
00:17:16This house is exactly like the one in the old photo,
00:17:18in New York.
00:17:21Yes, it's possible.
00:17:26It's a typical example of the local architecture.
00:17:29There are probably hundreds of houses like it in the area.
00:17:38You ready?
00:17:40Don't you want to unload the car?
00:17:42You got six months to kind of play with nature.
00:17:47Nothing wrong with a feeling like this.
00:17:50You know, I don't know why I don't feel like doing it.
00:17:56Nothing I feel like doing is here.
00:18:01No.
00:18:11You know, I don't feel like doing anything.
00:18:14Now, we have water in the kitchen.
00:18:19You know...
00:18:24I was thinking, maybe Bob and I should have stayed in New York.
00:18:29Oh, for God's sake, again? Stop with this, please.
00:18:34Yeah, after all, six months goes by real quick, doesn't it?
00:18:39Hey, come on, don't you remember? We decided it would be a vacation.
00:18:43I do my research, and you and Bob, you can go out. It's beautiful.
00:18:46Great place for vacation, isn't it?
00:18:51Listen, honey, it means another $5,000 per year.
00:18:56Do you realize? We can refurnish the apartment in New York.
00:19:13What's the matter? It's only a doll.
00:19:18Bob's the one bringing home that trash.
00:19:23You're just tired.
00:19:28You really should take those pills Joe Baker prescribed.
00:19:33Why do you keep telling me to go on with those pills? I feel fine. I never felt better.
00:19:38They'll calm down your nerves.
00:19:43Besides, I read somewhere that those pills can provoke hallucinations.
00:19:48Are you sure?
00:19:58Well, you can't say the house isn't quaint.
00:20:03I guess this must be the cellar.
00:20:08Say the word and I'll open it for you.
00:20:13Tonight I'd rather sleep in a real bed, wouldn't you?
00:20:25All right.
00:20:33Bob.
00:20:38Bob, it's time for your nap.
00:20:43No, I want to play.
00:20:48Don't whine.
00:21:03Hi.
00:21:08Hi.
00:21:13Are you Mrs. Boyle?
00:21:18Yes.
00:21:23Mrs. Gittleson sent me over.

00:34:24What's wrong?
00:34:27Lucy.
00:34:33Lucy.
00:34:38Lucy.
00:34:59Hi.
00:35:05How do you feel?
00:35:08Better.
00:35:10Have Bob and Ann come back?
00:35:12Not yet.
00:35:25Why can't we get something else from Mrs. Giddleson?
00:35:28I mean, this house is so strange.
00:35:31Sure, I can deal with a graveyard next door, but to live with a tomb in your hallway?
00:35:35It's just something you'll have to get used to.
00:35:38This ain't New York.
00:35:40I know.
00:35:41Most of the old houses in the area have tombs in them.
00:35:43Really.
00:35:44No kidding.
00:35:45It's because in the winter it freezes here.
00:35:46Is that so?
00:35:47Yeah, and the yard being like a rock, they'd bury Grandpa at home.
00:35:49No more ghost talk now, huh?
00:35:50Okay.
00:35:51Come on, I've got a surprise for you.
00:35:52What is it?
00:35:53I did some clever scrounging.
00:35:54And well, darling, now we try to solve the cellar door mystery.
00:36:02Cellar.
00:36:12Nope.
00:36:25We're home, Mrs. Boyle.
00:36:27Daddy, Daddy, you're back from work!
00:36:28Hey!
00:36:29Guess what?
00:36:30What?
00:36:31Today I saw my new girlfriend again.
00:36:33And they said to tell you hi.
00:36:35And also to Mommy.
00:36:37Hey, what are you doing?
00:36:39Well, I want to show Mommy there's nothing behind the door.
00:36:42How about giving me a hand?
00:36:43Sure.
00:36:44This one didn't work.
00:36:45You try it.
00:36:46Did you see the girl he was talking about?
00:36:48No.
00:36:49No.
00:36:50Weren't you with him?
00:36:52Yes, all the time.
00:36:54I found it.
00:37:01The only trouble is...
00:37:04Oh, thank you.
00:37:10The rest is all get-out.
00:37:20Obviously, Peterson wasn't interested in cellars.
00:37:25Must be years since...
00:37:30Oh, I'm sorry.
00:37:52Do you see anything?
00:37:54Some old steps going down.
00:37:57Should I come with you?
00:37:58No, stay with Bob.
00:38:58Marvin!
00:39:01Ann!
00:39:04Why did you shout like that?
00:39:07I was just...
00:39:29Help!
00:39:31Marvin, help me!
00:39:54Daddy!
00:39:56What's the matter?
00:40:26What's the matter?
00:40:57I see.
00:40:59I'll tell Mrs. Giddleson.
00:41:01Please tell her we want to move out.
00:41:03No later than tomorrow.
00:41:05Yes, very well.
00:41:07Well, will it be difficult to find another house?
00:41:12I can't really say, but I don't think so.
00:41:15Thank God for that.
00:41:16Don't forget now.
00:41:17No later than tomorrow, okay?
00:41:18Yes, very well.
00:41:20I'll call Mrs. Giddleson.
00:41:22Goodbye.
00:41:31That Freudstein house.
00:41:34That Freudstein house.
00:41:37No.
00:41:38No.
00:41:41It was inevitable.
00:41:43What?
00:41:44That they'd want to leave the Freudstein place.
00:41:47Oak Mansion, Harold.
00:41:49How many times do I have to tell you?
00:41:51That house is now called Oak Mansion.
00:41:53Yeah, give the bad product a new label.
00:41:55Well, call it what you will,
00:41:57but it's always been Freudstein's house.
00:42:04Me.
00:42:09Me.
00:42:12Me.
00:42:15Me.
00:42:20Me.
00:42:21We have to.
00:42:26I suppose so.
00:42:31What were you doing by the window?
00:42:33Watching the house, is all.
00:42:35You can't see it from here.
00:42:37Come.
00:42:41Time to go to bed.
00:42:46Don't go inside.
00:42:49Not inside.
00:43:03Mr. Boyle?
00:43:05Mrs. Boyle?

00:47:07Good morning, Ann.
00:47:31Good morning.
00:47:40What are you doing?
00:47:43I made coffee.
00:47:54What a shame you didn't come with us to the restaurant last night.
00:48:08Well, at least your parents must have been glad you paid them a visit, huh?
00:48:24Do you live far from here?
00:48:40Good morning, Professor.
00:48:45Norman.
00:48:46Yeah?
00:48:47That girl Ann's a real weirdo.
00:48:50I can't get a word out of her.
00:48:55Maybe she doesn't like me.
00:49:00Is it interesting?
00:49:06What?
00:49:07Did you find anything interesting?
00:49:12I don't know.
00:49:15Peterson was reading up about a certain Dr. Freudstein, turn-of-the-century surgeon, who
00:49:22had a penchant for illegal experiments.
00:49:25What did that have to do with his historical research?
00:49:28Nothing.
00:49:30Nothing at all.
00:49:32The best guess I can come up with is that Peterson was already going off the deep end.
00:49:43Honey.
00:49:46Yeah?
00:49:49That's why I have to take a trip to New York.
00:49:56Today?
00:49:58Yeah.
00:50:01I need Mueller's okay to follow up a hunch.
00:50:07Which is that Peterson's suicide was somehow connected with his research on the surgeon
00:50:11Freudstein.
00:50:30Ah.
00:50:31It's you.
00:50:32Surprised?
00:50:33Well, it's Sunday, and I thought...
00:50:38I know.
00:50:39What are you doing here?
00:50:43Nothing.
00:50:44Just a routine check.
00:50:47One of my duties is to check all the wings of the library on Sunday, when we're closed.
00:50:57I won't disturb you any longer.
00:51:00Excuse me.
00:51:26Gotcha!
00:51:27Only because I fell.
00:51:28Otherwise, you wouldn't have come near me.
00:51:29Where are you going?
00:51:30I have to get home, or Elmo will yell at me.
00:51:31Mom's gone shopping, and she still thinks I'm up in my room napping.
00:51:32No, Elmo won't get mad.
00:51:33I tell you she will, because Mommy told her I was not to go out.
00:51:34Don't go in the house, Bob.
00:51:35Don't worry.
00:51:36I'll just fake it a minute or two, and then sneak out again.
00:51:37See ya.
00:51:38Bye.
00:51:39Bye.
00:51:40Bye.

00:52:00Wait for me!
00:52:01Under the oak!
00:52:03Okay!
00:52:04No, Bob, don't go inside.
00:52:08I warned you not to.
00:52:44It's been days and days since I stopped work for this.
00:53:04I can't eat, can't sleep.
00:53:08I can't stop now, though.
00:53:09I've got to.
00:53:10I've
00:53:39lost all critical perspective, the signs, the warnings of this house, Freudstein's house,
00:53:49that anguish crying, and Sheila's smiles.
00:53:53What can I do to make her believe me?
00:53:56Maybe I'm insane.
00:53:57Yes, this is all unreal.
00:54:01Freudstein's house draws me like an infernal magnet and frightens me.
00:54:14How many have wandered innocently into the waiting spider web?
00:54:19How many more are doomed to follow?
00:54:25The smell of the rooms terrifies me and lures me on.
00:54:32The smell of blood.
00:54:35How many more still to come?
00:54:38Onward, into the depths of this mystery, I want to know, know the worst.
00:54:45Onward, find out, find out.
00:54:55Freudstein, his voice.
00:54:58Is that his voice?
00:55:03Blood.
00:55:06Blood.
00:55:09Not only blood.
00:55:13His voice.
00:55:15I can hear it now.
00:55:17I hear it.
00:55:19I hear it everywhere.
00:55:35Sheila!
00:55:38Do you believe me now?
00:55:40Do you believe me?
00:55:42No.
00:55:47No.
00:55:49No.
00:55:51Sheila.
00:56:06No!
00:56:08No, not the children!
00:56:12No!
00:56:14And they're on the starting grid set for the big race, Yogi.

01:05:46I don't know, but I missed...
01:05:49Were you playing? You mean, she was hiding? And you got scared or what?
01:05:53I was racing, and I heard them scream, and I went down to the side, and poor Ann!
01:06:00And?
01:06:02And they cut off Ann's head!
01:06:04What?
01:06:06They did, Mommy! It fell down the stairs and was lying there, and I saw it! I did!
01:06:11Bob? Bob, really?
01:06:13It's true, Mommy!

01:08:19What are you doing here?
01:08:21What are you doing here?
01:08:22I happen to be the caretaker. We're closed now.
01:08:25I'm looking for a tomb.
01:08:26Whose tomb?
01:08:28Of Dr. Freudstein's.
01:08:30Oh, you two.
01:08:32What do you mean?
01:08:33Well, you're not the first.
01:08:37Look, friend.
01:08:39I came over 200 miles to see this tomb.
01:08:42And I want to see it.
01:08:44Well, you shouldn't have bothered.
01:08:45There's no Dr. Freudstein here.
01:08:49But...
01:08:52According to the official records, he was buried here.
01:08:56The official records don't mean a thing.
01:08:58It's a lot of bunk that Freudstein's buried here.
01:09:01Just gossip.
01:09:02Now, come on. The cemetery's closed.
01:09:04Let's go.
01:09:06Do you mind?
01:09:15Thanks, Mommy.
01:09:27Ann will come back. You'll see.
01:09:29She's probably just gone to visit her parents. That's all.
