  • last month
In a recent interview, Karti Chidambaram stood by his controversial statement that the BJP and Communist parties are the only major Indian political entities not controlled by a single family. Emphasising that this is an undeniable fact, Chidambaram argued that it's something the political landscape must come to terms with. 00:00So in a recent interview, you went on to say that there are only two parties which are not run by one particular family in the country, one is the Congress and the other is the BJP.
00:08Going forward, we hear in reports of Mr. Ganesh Dalal being elevated from the position of Deputy Chief Minister.
00:14How do you see this and do you believe that voicing these statements or putting out these statements saying that BJP and the Communists are the only two parties which are not being run by a single family
00:27are against your party land or is it just something that you...
00:57BJP in Maharashtra, the Biju Janata Dal in Orissa, the TMC in Bengal, the TDP and the BRS, the DMK and the one which is the most family dominated political party is the JDS of Karnataka.
01:13So every political party has got a centrality of a family around which people congregate and the party functions and that's the social reality of India.
01:24It's not unique to India alone, it's unique to Sri Lanka, the same in Bangladesh, the same in Pakistan.
01:29If you go to Pakistan, the Pakistan people's party is completely around the family of the Bhutos.
01:36If you go to the other party, the Nawaz Sharif's party is again dominated by their family.
01:43You go to Sheikh Haseena or Khalida Zia in Bangladesh, their families dominate the parties.
01:48You go to Sri Lanka, it is either the Rajapakshes or the Kumaratungas or the Bandaranayakes or the Jayavardhanes or even Mr. Vikramasinghe who is currently the president is a nephew of Jayavardhane.
01:58So it's not unique to India, it's a South Asian phenomenon.
02:03In fact, the country which has the greatest amount of family influence on politics in the world is surprisingly, people don't know, the answer is Japan.
02:1170% of members of parliament in Japan in the Diet come from political families.
02:16So this is not a unique situation for the Congress party or the DMK, this is what India is, this is what South Asia is.
02:22This is a sociological fact, that's what I'm stating. I'm not stating anything against the political party or for a political party.
02:28I completely understand the emotional bond which people have is towards their love, affection and admiration, hero worship, whatever you might call.
02:38Towards families and those families then perpetuate leaderships and political structures are built around those families and that's the sociological fact in India.
