An off-duty officer was shot in the leg Saturday night after he recognized a suspect wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for attempted murder.
That suspect is now facing an additional charge of attempted murder, as well as numerous weapons charges.
The off-duty officer was in the area of Bathurst and King streets just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he saw the wanted man and called for on-duty officers to respond, police said.
Officers arrived and the suspect — wanted in connection with a shooting on Dec. 3, 2022, in the Church Street and Front Street East area — fled on foot, police say.
“During this time, the suspect shot the off-duty officer in the leg,” police said.

00:25to recognize this man 30 year old Javel Jackson from Toronto wanted on a Canada
00:29wide warrant for the attempted murder of a man he's alleged to have shot last
00:33December in the Church Street and the Front Street area. He promptly alerted on
00:37duty officers and they approached the suspect to place him under arrest. A
00:42short foot chase ensued followed by a takedown during which Jackson shot the
00:46off-duty officer. He was shot in the upper leg it was a serious injury but he
00:51was treated and released. The association as well will be there for anything the
00:54family needs or the officer needs you know assisting obviously with process
00:58through the recovery any kind of mental health supports as well. Police say
01:02Jackson was arrested and now faces several additional charges including
01:06another account of attempted murder and numerous additional firearm charges.
01:10Police today crediting the keen eye of the off-duty officer for the arrest. This
01:14very astute officer works in 51 division the occurrence from December Church
01:21Street and Front Street East is 51 division area so I imagine that
01:27assisted in this credibly astute officers having the image in his mind.
01:32Mayor Olivia Chow posting to X earlier this afternoon saying I wish the officer
01:38a quick recovery from their injuries and offer my full support violence is never
01:42acceptable. Police pointing out at today's presser that this is yet another
01:46example of the great risks posed to officers even when off duty.
