00:00There was a group of drunk men at this auction, throwing beer cans at him, and after I got
00:11them away from him, he came up to the fence, he just sort of melted.
00:17A zorse is not a natural combination, it's a hybrid between a horse and a zebra.
00:24It's a wild animal.
00:29I personally believe that they are just not meant to be domesticated.
00:33He wasn't safe in that situation, so I decided to bring him home with me.
00:37For the first three months, he was very defensive.
00:41He probably had a lot of bad experiences with people.
00:44It was absolutely hard for Pete to trust.
00:48I gave him a lot of space, and reading his body language.
00:52I'm going to take one step closer.
00:55Get out of here, that's why I keep going.
00:58Eventually he became curious.
01:03And that was a big sign of him being comfortable.
01:15We discovered that he really likes his ears being scratched.
01:19Pete was clearly comfortable with me, but I couldn't help think that he needed more.
01:41I definitely miss Pete every day, but he's so happy there, I knew that it was absolutely
01:47the right decision for him.
02:00Hi!
02:01Hi, sweetheart!
02:02I was just driving to school one morning, and I noticed this little black and white
02:06figure.
02:07She was really muddy, the chain she was on was really short, it broke my heart just to
02:12see her like that.
02:13We'd stop by around three or four times a week for about a year.
02:16Hi, baby girl!
02:17What are you doing?
02:18Huh?
02:19Yeah?
02:20Hi!
02:21I actually bought a couple dog toys for her just to play with.
02:35Hi, baby girl!
02:37You okay?
02:38She had had a really bad infection in her ears, and she looked really rough.
02:43So, I decided to call animal control.
02:45The owners just didn't have the means to take care of her.
02:47They were like, do you know anybody that would be interested in having her?
02:50And I was like, oh my gosh, yes!
02:51I would so be willing to take her.
02:53Are you excited to get to go home?
02:55She's extremely loving.
02:56You can tell she's grateful that she's not where she was.
02:59What are you doing?
03:02She has beat all odds, and she has just been amazing.
03:13When I first got him, he had a lot of pin feathers, which look like little sticks, and
03:28tend to feel itchy.
03:29I got him into a warm bath, kind of held him in my lap, and he just melted.
03:35With an older bird especially, they can't quite groom all of those themselves.
03:40You could tell he was wanting to do that for a while.
03:44Reno's original owners had him for 21 years.
03:47They took really good care of him.
03:48It was just the grooming needed a little bit of extra work.
03:52As they became older and less able to care for him, they made the very difficult but
03:56responsible decision to trust me with him.
04:00He really just wanted to be up against you, or like wrapped in a little towel.
04:05I kind of thought, is there something wrong?
04:08Why does he want to be held like that?
04:10When a bird is bonded with humans, they don't always understand that they're a bird.
04:15I have another Quaker parrot named Chucky, who's been in my care for about 8 years.
04:20I wasn't really sure how Reno and Chucky would react to each other, with Chucky being
04:25kept by himself for 8 years, and Reno for 21 years.
04:29Eventually, I introduced them to the same enclosure, and now they share their space
04:33really well.
04:35They hang out together.
04:36They preen each other a little bit.
04:38They're buddies.
04:40Now, he even protects Reno.
04:43I'm petting Reno, and then Chucky's like, ah!
04:46Ow!
04:47Seeing Chucky do that, it kind of proved to me that they definitely have the kind of bond
04:52that I was hoping they would make.
04:54I think he's just getting a lot more at ease with being a bird, especially with having
04:58a friend that can teach him those things.
05:00Reno is very special to me because I'm his final caretaker, so I feel really dedicated
05:07to making sure that his last years are really filled with fun and friends.
05:13Peek-a-boo!
05:15Peek-a-boo!
05:23Vida is a special, special soul.
05:27When I first came to Mexico, I wasn't expected to see a dog that was in pain in the street
05:32for months.
05:34The doctor told me that I have to decide between fighting for an animal that I just met, or
05:39I need to put her to sleep.
05:42She looked at me like, I want to leave, and I realized that she was still fighting.
05:48It was hard at the beginning because she was very insecure about contact with me.
05:55I just wanted her to know that I was there for her.
06:03I tried to get her a wheelchair, but she hated it all.
06:07I could put her for one hour and she would not move.
06:10She decides that she can't be independent.
06:15She walks perfect without a wheelchair.
06:24Now, she's more confident.
06:26She knows that I'm not going to hurt her.
06:29That's the most important thing that we have to give her.
06:33I'm going to put her to sleep.
06:35She knows that I'm not going to hurt her.
06:37That's the most important thing that we have to give to the dogs, is trust.
06:46People think that if they adopt a dog with a disability, they don't have a perfect dog.
06:52It's a society problem.
06:54I felt that I had to do something.
06:56I have 12 dogs in my house, five of them with disabilities.
07:02What kind of dog does nobody want?
07:05I'm not telling everybody.
07:06I have 12 dogs.
07:07I just want to inspire people to be good.
07:11Bita, what she taught us is that every dog is beautiful,
07:16that every dog can give you so much to learn,
07:19and every dog is so special.
07:31She was very pale, very skinny.
07:35He probably had stopped eating because there's food at the bottom.
07:39You just could tell he'd been like that for multiple days.
07:44When I brought him home, I put him in a temporary hospital tank.
07:51At first, he was very timid.
07:53He was hiding a lot.
07:55As long as he started eating, I was pretty sure I could help him.
07:58He just really needed some clean water.
08:02The swim issues went away.
08:06Look, come here.
08:08Come here.
08:10And one day, he started eating.
08:15And then he colored up.
08:17It was a little bit surprising to see.
08:19He's just beautiful, bright red.
08:23I got him into a tank, and watching him come out of his shell was so exciting.
08:27He's curious about me.
08:29He does come out when he sees me.
08:32I've rescued probably around 80 fish.
08:37I adopt them out to my friends here,
08:39but Bongo, he was just so sweet, and he's more quiet,
08:43and I kind of like that about him.
08:45So that's why I kept him.
