00:00You could call her a globetrotter because it's not just musically that she likes moving around
00:09but also one who is returning to her roots after living and experiencing many cultures.
00:14While some young people are leaving the country,
00:17Victoria Falono has decided to settle in Lagos, Nigeria after traveling the world.
00:23I think one of the most interesting things about traveling and coming back to Nigeria
00:31is seeing the different ways that Nigerian culture has influenced culture around the world.
00:37So like I lived in Cuba and I'm there seeing in the purest form Yoruba stories, Yoruba culture
00:47embedded in their culture. It's so rich. So for me, like coming to say,
00:52I'm now going to sit down in Lagos as a place where I'm going to make sure that
00:56all my music is rooted here. It just makes sense because it's the source of everything.
01:05Born in Canada to Nigerian parents, Victoria Falono lived in the UK,
01:10Cuba, Denmark and the United States of America. She has created sounds that reflect her journey
01:17inspired by sounds of these various cities she has lived in.
01:21Now she tells us why returning to a place where her parents call home is special.
01:28Being home is like being rooted and grounded in yourself and your truth as an artist.
01:33That's the place you need to create from as an artist when you have that,
01:37the energy, the vibrations, the rhythm, the histories of who you are beneath your feet
01:43and in the air and in the conversations that you're having with people.
01:46It just, it makes your art come to life in a different way.
01:53Every day is different. So I brought you, I wanted you guys to be in the studio with me.
01:58I might start on the keys, for example. So for example, I remember when N-STARS happened.
02:09It was a very emotional moment in our history and I just felt so overwhelmed with emotions.
02:17So one of the first things you'll hear.
02:19Victoria likes fusing Afro beats, R&B and other black diasporic sounds into her music
02:40by musicians who have influenced her from Fela Kuti, Nina Simone to Lauryn Hill.
02:46But still, she wants to remain true to herself and her passion.
02:52Coming home for Victoria is an opportunity to continue to tap into her roots
02:57as her unique talents continue to blossom.
