Transcript
00:00The Paris Olympics are coming to a close in just four days, but Taiwan still has the chance
00:05to take home some highly anticipated medals, including a gold in boxing.
00:11But controversy has dogged the contender from Taiwan, Lin Yu-ting.
00:15We go now live to Paris with Leslie Liao.
00:18Leslie, how did Lin fare in her latest match?
00:25Lin Yu-ting beat Turkish boxer Ezra Yildiz Karaman in the women's boxing featherweight
00:31semi-final.
00:32Lin will be the first ever Taiwanese boxer to make it into an Olympic gold medal round,
00:37and what's more impressive is that she beat her opponent while feeling under the weather.
00:55The match was not without controversy.
00:57Before leaving the ring, Yildiz Karaman made an X-gesture with her fingers.
01:02That's being seen as a shot at Lin, who has been competing in Paris with questions
01:07over her gender.
01:10Most women have two X-chromosomes, and Yildiz Karaman's gesture seemed to imply that she
01:15was a woman and Lin was not, bringing her gender eligibility into question all over
01:21again.
01:22It's important to mention that Lin is not transgender.
01:25She was female at birth, and the Taiwanese government has come out in support of that.
01:30The International Olympic Committee has also supported Lin, but that hasn't stopped people
01:34from targeting the boxer to oppose transgender inclusion in the Olympics.
01:40But Lin's coach says that they're not bothered by the criticisms at all, and he says that
01:45they're going to be focused on the task at hand.
01:53Lin's gold medal match will take place on Saturday, where she will face off against
02:05Polish boxer Yulia Zharmeta.
02:08There is a bit of breaking news coming out of the Paris Olympics, as we just learned
02:12a moment ago that Taiwanese Taekwondo and medal hopeful has lost to her Lebanese opponent,
02:17meaning she will no longer be competing at the Olympics.
02:20Her Olympic run is done.
02:22For now, Taiwanese current official medal tally at the Paris Olympics sits at one gold
02:27and four bronze.
