00:00Have mercy, have mercy upon us.
00:06Welcome to Mojo Plays and today we're looking at the most frightening bosses found in games
00:11released since the year 2000.
00:17Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:22the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:26In this incredibly tough RPG, permadeath from a variety of sources can tear your party members
00:32apart.
00:33It's second DLC pack, The Color of Madness, takes inspiration from HP Lovecraft's original
00:39game of the year, but it's also one of the most powerful RPGs of all time.
00:44It's a game where you have to fight a bunch of enemies, fight a bunch of enemies, fight
00:48a bunch of enemies, fight a bunch of enemies, fight a bunch of enemies, fight a bunch of
00:52enemies.
00:53The Color of Madness takes inspiration from HP Lovecraft to give you one freakishly designed
00:57encounter.
00:58The Thing from the Stars is an eldritch beast that resembles a horrific fusion of horse
01:03and human, with bone and crystal sticking out at odd angles.
01:08Not only does it look scary, but it's an absolute nightmare to fight, too.
01:12Its attacks can inflict massive amounts of stress on your party, as well as give them
01:16diseases.
01:17It even grows stronger as you fight it, gaining resistance to certain attacks while its own
01:23increase in power.
01:24Good luck, explorers.
01:26The Crones.
01:28The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt.
01:30Though their tapestry would have you believe this trio of witches are beautiful, in reality,
01:35they're anything but.
01:37There are plenty of frightening creatures throughout The Witcher, yet The Crones never
01:41fail to unsettle.
01:42Each one has their own unique, disgusting feature.
01:46Bruice's discolored skin and misshapen limbs make her appear monstrous.
01:51Wispus carries a sack of body parts around, and Weavus has a… serious bug infestation
01:57issue.
01:58After being kidnapped by them, Ciri gets to fight the sisters in a big old disturbing
02:02pool of blood.
02:03They each have their own attacks, and taunt you throughout the fight, making vanquishing
02:08them all the sweeter.
02:09Unfortunately, of the possible 36 endings, only the one where Ciri dies leads to you
02:15killing the final sister.
02:21Panzer Mortar.
02:22Call of Duty World War II.
02:29You might not expect a historical war series like Call of Duty to have scary bosses, but
02:33let's not forget about the zombies mode.
02:36Towards the end of the final Reich map in World War II, players are confronted by the
02:40Panzer Mortar, whose appearance immediately brings to mind the stomach-churning practical
02:45effects of David Cronenberg.
02:47The burly monstrosity is made of machine parts and an untold number of corpses.
02:52In fact, its demogorgon-like mouth is made up entirely of torsos.
02:57Its immense size and terrifying design alone is enough to intimidate even the most confident
03:02of players.
03:03However, as Panzer Mortar literally translates to Armor Killer, it has the power to back
03:09it up.
03:10Eddie Gluskin, aka The Groom, Outlast.
03:18While Outlast confronts you with multiple twisted patients of Mount Massive Asylum,
03:23none of them measure up to this freak in the DLC.
03:26Eddie Gluskin may not appear that frightening, other than the blood smears on his face, but
03:31it's his very core as a human that sends shivers up your spine.
03:35Before being admitted, The Groom was a serial killer that mutilated women.
03:40As a patient, he's taken to forcing men into the role of his bride, with all the disturbing
03:45anatomical implications that come with it.
03:48Next up in this sickening cycle of forced marriage is you, a prospect that can make
03:53any player run the other way.
03:55In fact, that's basically all you can do until you gain the upper hand.
04:04Pyramid Head, Silent Hill 2.
04:10This baddie was so popular in his Silent Hill 2 debut, it made him the most recognizable
04:15foe in the series.
04:17As we navigate the town, this behemoth of a man would seemingly never be far from our
04:22trail.
04:23His stature, gigantic blade, and the metal box that gives him his name all make for a
04:28striking design.
04:30Of course, every monster in the franchise should be avoided, but Pyramid Head's relentless
04:35nature made him unavoidable.
04:37Finding out he was actually born from protagonist James' guilty psyche gave him a personal touch
04:42that somehow made him even more frightening.
04:45You also have several Pyramid Head encounters to contend with, one of which is in a small
04:50room and another where there are two of him.
04:53Ludwig the Accursed, Bloodborne.
04:58Look at them, the great terror droids.
05:05FromSoftware's games are packed with intimidating bosses.
05:08However, the studio's most distressing design is, naturally, found in its horror game, Bloodborne.
05:15Ludwig can be fought within the game's The Old Hunters DLC.
05:18An unholy chimera of human and horse parts, Ludwig shambles into view as an NPC begs for
05:25mercy.
05:26As his one mouth, full of eyeballs, shifts, his half-blind horse head takes one look at
05:31you and screams.
05:33It's quite the introduction, and you have two phases of him flailing about and shrieking
05:37at you to then deal with.
05:39It isn't fromSoftware's hardest boss fight, nor even the hardest in this game, but Ludwig's
05:45constant wailing and his supremely unnerving appearance definitely make him the scariest.
05:56Photoshop Flowey, Undertale.
06:03Most of the scariest bosses in recent memory rely on modern advancements in graphics for
06:08their troubling designs.
06:09And while Undertale was inspired by retro RPGs in both style and presentation, Flowey
06:15is still more alarming than most.
06:18The sadistic flower will confront you at the end of the game, absorbing Asgore's collected
06:22souls of dead children and transforming into an abomination known as Photoshop Flowey.
06:27The fight bombards you with a tense soundtrack and even tenser gameplay.
06:32All the while, the mangled concoction of plant, flesh, and machine taunts you, cackles maniacally,
06:39and projects disturbing faces on his monitor to stare you down.
06:43His violent demeanor throughout was already unsettling.
06:46Here, his appearance reflects that.
06:51Laura, The Evil Within.
06:57Two things almost universally guaranteed to creep people the hell out are spiders and
07:02vengeful spirits.
07:04Well put them both together, and you have Laura from The Evil Within.
07:08Don't let her regular name fool you, Laura is one nasty piece of work.
07:12Born from the death of Laura Victoriano and her brother's hatred, this boss's body
07:17is made up almost entirely of appendages.
07:21Long, gangly appendages with severe burn marks and razor sharp nails.
07:26Her pale face brings to mind the Onryo, Japanese ghost who died under traumatic circumstances
07:32and made popular through movies like The Grudge.
07:34She also hits like a truck, can teleport, and has extremely high health.
07:39So yeah, not exactly a pleasant experience.
07:50The Rat King, The Last of Us Part II.
08:00Naughty Dog's sequel managed to make the already terrifying Infected much scarier by
08:04introducing variants based on location and environment.
08:08Their design reached peak disgust and fear with Abby's horrifying fight against the
08:13Rat King.
08:14There's excellent build up as you navigate the lower levels of the hospital, and when
08:18it finally reveals itself you almost have no time to take in its repulsive appearance
08:23before it attacks.
08:25The Rat King is made up of several Infected, conjoined over time by the Cordyceps fungus.
08:30The space in which you fight it is claustrophobic, leading to multiple moments of panic as the
08:35foe closes in.
08:37Making it worse is the stalker who breaks off mid-fight, so that you're hunted on
08:41two fronts.
08:49Marguerite Baker, Resident Evil 7 Biohazard.
09:02Resident Evil is the king of horror for many reasons, though one of the biggest is how
09:07petrifying its bosses are.
09:09Sure Resident Evil 2's Mr. X causes us much anxiety, but when it comes to blending ungodly
09:15fear and pure revulsion, it's tough to beat Marguerite Baker.
09:20The matriarch of the Baker family is fought in the second house, and mutates after the
09:25first brief encounter.
09:27Her appendages grow longer, her voice more demonic, and she scrambles about on the walls
09:32and floor like a giant bug.
09:34Speaking of bugs, it only took one look at her body's nest to make us never want to
09:40repeat this encounter.
09:41Add on the dim lighting and tight space, and this is one seriously stressful fight.
09:54If there's a boss that shook you to your core that we didn't include, let us know
09:58about it in the comments.
