Russia declares federal emergency as Ukrainian troops continue cross-border assault

The announcement comes four days after hundreds of Ukrainian troops crossed into Russia's Kursk region, staging an ongoing assault.

00:00It is the fourth day of Ukraine's incursion into the Kursk region. The lack of Russian
00:05response and the rate of Ukrainian advance indicate that the Russian military was caught
00:10by surprise. This is according to US-based think tank the Institute for the Study of
00:14War. They add that Ukraine reportedly advanced up to 35 kilometers beyond the border.
00:21This map shows Ukrainian advances by the end of the incursion's second day. On the second
00:26map, the expanded area marked in blue shows their further advances by the end of the third
00:31day.
00:33The think tank notes that while the Ukrainian forces are moving in small groups to conduct
00:37assaults in the area, they have not taken control of it. Reportedly, larger groups are
00:43also operating closer to the border.
00:46The think tank posted the following statement on social media platform X. In it, they state
00:51that Ukrainian forces were able to achieve operational surprise along the border with
00:56Russia.
