00:03APPLAUSE
00:31Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown this afternoon.
00:34No gold medals, no world records, no national anthems,
00:37just a dictionary and a teapot, and we love it.
00:40Rachel Riley, you're often considered the young pop of this show,
00:44so I'm going to make you feel old. Yeah.
00:46Today, ten years since the opening ceremony of London 2012.
00:51I can hardly believe it. That's bonkers.
00:54Where's the time gone?
00:55I remember the whole fuss about how busy London was going to be,
00:58and when you went into London during that time,
01:00you could hear a pin drop. There was nobody around, the whole city.
01:03The Isles of Wonder, Danny Boyle's opening ceremony on this day.
01:06I remember the NHS scene because it was clever and it was beautiful
01:10and it was funny and it was poignant and it was, for me,
01:13the best there's ever been. Do you even remember it?
01:16Were you old enough? I remember my friend Siobhan was in it.
01:19I was doing all the rehearsals and she'd volunteered and she...
01:22I can't remember what on earth she did in it,
01:24but she was very dedicated to practising and getting it all right
01:27and, yeah, a bit of an experience.
01:29Did you get to any of the sport?
01:31I went to see some hockey, I think, some ladies' hockey, possibly.
01:34I might have seen Holland play. I mean, it's all a bit fuzzy now,
01:37but it was nice just to be there and, like you say, the atmosphere
01:40and all the volunteers and everyone was cheery.
01:42And the Paralympics as well sold a record amount of tickets.
01:46It was a game-changer on that front too.
01:48Beautiful memories. Ten years ago, though.
01:50Time flies. There you go. Join our old club.
01:53Yeah, we sound like that. Yeah, definitely.
01:55Well, let's go over to Dictionary Corner.
01:57She gives us her personal best every single day, Susie Dent.
02:01Listen, not even Usain Bolt could replace Mr Levi Roots
02:06as everybody's favourite Jamaican around here.
02:08Yes.
02:12Let's race over to our two-time champion, Sue.
02:15Nobody's won even three in a row since I've been sitting back here.
02:19The Colnett Accurs. I need to get rid of it. Are you up for it?
02:22Yes, I'll give it a go, Colin.
02:24As Whitney Houston said in that Olympic song,
02:26one moment in time, and that's you today.
02:28Well, listen, it's funny you should mention going to the hockey
02:31because our challenger today, from Cork, Phil O'Driscoll,
02:33no word of lie, you could have been a contender.
02:36I could have been, yeah.
02:38I played for Ireland underage, under 16.
02:41Went slightly awry, but I played club-level hockey
02:45my entire life, really.
02:47When you say it went slightly awry,
02:49was it not enough time in the training ground and too long in the pub?
02:52Definitely, yeah. Definitely after hitting 18,
02:55yeah, it was definitely a contributing factor.
02:59And the Irish women's hockey team in 2018 shook up the world, didn't they?
03:04Reached the final of the world.
03:06Yeah, they did. They did very well, yeah. It was great to see.
03:08Well, listen, good luck to you today.
03:10Good luck to both of you. Sue and Phil, everybody.

06:20I'm up for this one.
06:21Wasn't easy at all.
06:23So, yeah, no worries about that at all,

11:27Is that the right thing?
11:28That is absolutely fine.
11:29Pulses, P's, that kind of thing.
11:30Yeah.
11:31And a slightly odder one is gimps.
11:34G-U-I-M-P-E-S.
11:36And they are high-necked blouses, at least they were,
11:38or undergarments showing beneath a low-necked dress.
11:41Lovely, right.
11:4232 plays 23, Phil.
11:44Ten points up for grabs.
11:45So you can turn this show upside down with your numbers.
11:48Can I just have a one large and any other five, please?
11:51And, indeed, you're not gambling just yet.
11:55One large, five little coming up,

12:02and the all-important 100.
12:06And your target, 390.

12:37A 390, sir.
12:40391.
12:41Wow, Phil.
12:42390.
12:43Go for it.
12:44Six minus five.
12:46One.
12:47Plus three.
12:48Four.
12:49Times 100.
12:50400.
12:51And eight plus two and take it away.
12:53Yep.
12:54And you have nicked the lead.
12:56Well done.
13:00Nice, good work.
13:01Good work, Phil.
13:02Good time to pause, then, and cross over to Levi Root.
13:05Well, Levi, it's been such a thrill to have you.
13:07This is your last day,
13:08and you get to sit back as we get to ask you a question each.
13:11Cool.
13:12Susie Dent.
13:13Who's the most impressive person you've ever met?
13:16Well, there are three.
13:17OK.
13:18Don't embarrass us.
13:20Levi, don't embarrass the three of us.
13:22There are three cool people,
13:23some of the most important people in the world.
13:25First of all is Nelson Mandela.
13:27I met him when he came to Brixton,
13:29and I sang Happy Birthday, Mr President.
13:31Amazing.
13:32Bob Marley, who I played football with.
13:34Many years, I knew him quite well.
13:36And, of course, the fantastic Peter Jones that invested in me.
13:39So those three, I would say,
13:41they're the most inspirational people in my story and in my life,
13:44cos they've helped me to change my life.
13:46That's quite a trio. Thank you.
13:48I just assumed it was us, but, you know.
13:51I want to know, was Bob Marley actually any good at football?
13:55Oh, God!
13:56Well, one thing I do remember,
13:58Bob being this sort of short, Maradona-type guy,
14:01cos he's not very tall, Bob Marley, he's very short.
14:03Very hard to knock off the ball, very low sense of gravity.
14:07And I could see him always coming at me with the ball at his feet,
14:10and my thought is that,
14:11please, Levi, don't break Bob Marley's leg like one time.
14:15So he was really good.
14:17And a lot of people said that if he, you know,
14:19God forbid, if he didn't become a singer,
14:21that he would become a footballer.
14:23Skill Cole was his manager,
14:24and Skill Cole was Jamaica's greatest footballer.
14:27So he had a great football mind, Bob Marley,
14:29and he loved the game, absolutely loved it.
14:31Brilliant. Well done for not breaking his leg.
14:33Yeah.
14:34That's very good.
14:35Rachel, what do you think is the most important quality
14:37for being a successful entrepreneur?
14:39Is it hard work? Is it a good idea?
14:41Or is it a bit of a risk-taker? What's the secret sauce?
14:44For a start,
14:45I don't think entrepreneurs ever sort of gamble
14:47or take risks in that kind of way.
14:49What they do do is calculated risks.
14:52They are really people that think about the money that they're spending.
14:55It's always a lot of thinking, and I learnt that from my mentors,
14:58that don't go around and just think that you can buy everything
15:01or every business you can do.
15:03You really have to always think about it and be very...
15:06Strategic.
15:07Strategic about it. Right word.
15:09There you go. Brilliant.
15:10I tell you what, you've got to save your money up
15:12for all those suits anyway.
15:13Levi. Levi Roots, everyone. Brilliant.
15:15APPLAUSE
15:17OK, really close game.
15:18We've been spoilt the last week or two.
15:20It's one point in it, Phil's a point ahead,
15:23but it's Sue's lettuce.

15:26Thank you, Sue.

16:36There you go.
16:37Mansion, Levi.
16:39Take my hat off to mansion.
16:41Beautiful.
16:42Anything else, Susie?
16:43Lots of house themes, you have manners, mansion.
16:45You can also have manoirs.
16:47That's in there as well.
16:48And in so far...
16:49It's all one word.
16:50It is all one word.
16:51Brilliant. Great stuff. Great stuff.
16:53Sue takes the lead again, and it's Phil's letters.

18:08What have you got over in the corner, Levi?
18:10Yeah, just a couple of other sevens.
18:12Overact and overpay.
18:14Poverty's a good one, too.
18:15Very good.
18:16Right, overact, overpay and poverty.

20:17Draw canoe. The tide would draw the canoe ever closer to the sea.
20:21The tea time teaser was Oceanward.
20:24Today, the tenth anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
20:29And, Phil, I'm not saying you're done yet.
20:31I could maybe still ask you this tomorrow, but just in case.
20:34You've got a wonderful story that proves that it's not all about winning.
20:37I believe you had a bit of trouble running a half marathon.
20:41I did, yes, doing the Hackney half about maybe seven or eight years ago
20:46with my now wife.
20:48We were training together and trying to beat our own specific times
20:52and we decided to...
20:54Obviously, if someone pulled away, then we'd leave them go
20:57and we wouldn't hold back,
20:59thinking that I would be the person pulling away from my wife
21:02and getting my time.
21:04But she just kept creeping further and further away from me.
21:07And then, at about mile 11, I collapsed out of exhaustion under a bridge
21:13and the first thing I did was ring her and tell her to come back for me.
21:18And what did she do? Because the gold medal was at stake.
21:20Yeah, she was about a mile away from finishing,
21:22but she turned around, came back and got me
21:24and we finished together eventually.
21:26That's true love. True love.

22:47Over to Dictionary Corner.
22:49Susie, checking in with you.
22:51Yeah, we have parisons
22:53and they are rounded masses of glass straight out of the furnace.
22:57OK.
22:58We also have poignards and they are small daggers.
23:01Tiny little knives. Yes.
23:02OK, poignards. Very, very good.
23:04It's deaf by 1,000 cuts for Phil so far.

24:01MUSIC PLAYS
24:10How big do we go here, Phil?
24:12I have an ace.
24:13An eight. And Sue?
24:14Eight.
24:15What's yours, Phil?
24:16D-lings.
24:17D-lings. And Sue?
24:18D-lings.
24:19D-lings. OK.
24:20Was there a nine in there, Levi Roots?
24:23No, I didn't spot it. I spotted another eight signable.
24:27Looks like there should be a nine there, Susan.
24:29Yeah, I agree. We couldn't find it, though.
24:31OK. Let's take a little bit of time out.
24:33Susie, origins of words today. What journey are you taking us on?
24:36I'm going to take you back to London 2012
24:39and I'm going to look at some of the Amazons,
24:42the women who did absolutely fantastically at the Olympics.
24:45So, Jessica Innes, Laura Trott, Nicola Adams, Lizzie Armistead,
24:49Sophie Hoskin, Catherine Copeland.
24:51There were just so many amazing,
24:53what I would call Amazon warriors at sport.
24:55They were fantastic.
24:56I'm going to talk about the Amazon warriors
24:59and they were a legendary race of women
25:01and they were renowned for their fighting skills
25:03and they were immortalised, of course, in Wonder Woman.
25:06Wonder Woman, the Amazon warrior and the daughter of Hippolyta,
25:10who was Queen of Paradise Island,
25:12sent her child to the US in the fight against hate
25:15and the fight against oppression.
25:17And she says, in America, you will indeed be a Wonder Woman.
25:21So Diana Prince was then introduced to the world.
25:25Back to the Amazons, though.
25:26They were believed to have their origins in Greek mythology
25:29until, quite recently, when archaeological research
25:32unearthed evidence of women
25:34at least fitting the description of the Amazons,
25:36and I'll come to that, living as far back as the 9th century BC.
25:40And they belonged to this nomadic Eurasian race
25:43and they were known for their horsewomanship
25:46and their skill with the bow and arrow.
25:49They fought on horseback alongside the men
25:51and they have been found buried alongside their weapons.
25:54You can see their injuries are consistent with battle wounds.
25:57But they were incredibly strong and very, very powerful.
26:01And the etymology of the word has become quite notorious, really,
26:04because some people think it goes back to the Greek
26:07for lacking and breast.
26:09And the idea was that they would cut off one of their own breasts
26:13in order to improve their bow-womanship, if you like.
26:18But, unfortunately, etymologically that doesn't quite hang together
26:23because there's no physical evidence, either,
26:25that they did cut off one of their breasts.
26:27And we think, linguists think, that it actually goes back
26:30to either an ancient Iranian word, meaning one fighting together,
26:34or a far, far more ancient root, which, again, was all about battle.
26:38But they have inspired us for absolutely centuries,
26:41including those brilliant athletes at London 2012.
26:43Yes.
26:44APPLAUSE
26:47Right, let's get more laughs.
26:49Can I have a consonant, please? Thank you, Phil.
26:53And a vowel.
26:56And another.
26:59And a consonant.
27:02Another consonant.

27:57Great word.
27:58And Sue.
27:59Mither.
28:00Mither and dither.
28:02That's not dither, get straight over to Levi.
28:04Come on, beat it, let's go.
28:05Can't beat it.
28:06Six is my best, but it's a good word.
28:08Tedium.
28:09Tedium.
28:10Tedium, yeah.
28:11It kind of goes with dither, doesn't it?
28:13Dithering and tedium, funny how they can connect.
28:15Yeah.
28:1677 plays 47.
28:18Not quite across the line yet, though, but, Sue, it's your letters.
28:22Consonant, please, Rachel.
28:24Thank you, Sue.

28:26And a consonant.

29:16MUSIC PLAYS
29:23Sue?
29:24Seven.
29:25Ah, very good. And Phil?
29:27Try an ace.
29:28Why not?
29:29Sue, what have you got?
29:30Removal.
29:31Removal. What's the it that you can see, Phil?
29:34Marled.
29:35Marled. Let's go over to Susie Dent.
29:38Sue's spelling it with two Ls.
29:39Two Ls, yeah.
29:40It is absolutely brilliant.
29:42Yes.
29:43Well done.
29:44APPLAUSE
29:46Great moment for you, Phil.
29:48Not going to beat off 22 points and a 20 left,
29:51but that's a fantastic, fantastic it to pull out.
29:54Levi?
29:55Beat Phil.
29:56That's the moral of the story. We'll move on.
29:59Right, last numbers now from Phil.
30:02Just one large, please, and five small.
30:05Thank you, Phil.
30:06One from the top and five little to finish off this contest,
30:10numbers-wise.
30:11This selection is ten, five, six, three, one and 50.
30:17Let's try for something interesting, the target.
30:20Ooh, 979.
30:22Numbers up.
30:41MUSIC PLAYS
30:53Sue?
30:54No, nothing.
30:55OK.
30:56Er, also nothing.
30:57Right, there you go.
30:58Can I just make that a hat-trick of nothing?
31:01Aw!
31:02OK, Rich?
31:03OK. I found a way.
31:04I mean, it was on the harder side of one large is for sure.
31:07Do you have to go up to go down?
31:09You do.
31:10Any time nobody can get it, it's always you've got to go up to go down.
31:13Take away at the end.
31:14If you start with 50 plus five, 55.
31:18Six times three is 18.
31:21Times those together for 990.
31:24And now you can start going down, take away ten and the one.
31:27Yeah, it's brilliant stuff.
31:28APPLAUSE
31:31With 77 plus 55,
31:34just a small matter to come of the conundrum
31:37before we say goodbye today.
31:39So, Sue and Phil, fingers on the button.
31:43Last laugh is up for grabs.
31:45Here we go. Today's conundrum.
31:51BELL RINGS
31:52Sue?
31:53Fariagate.
31:54Let's have a look what stab that is.
31:56And it's wrong!
31:57Rest of the time to Phil.
31:59Restart that clock.
32:10BELL RINGS
32:21Phil, go on.
32:22Gravitate.
32:23Oh, he's finally found it.
32:25Here it is.
32:26APPLAUSE
32:31Phil, it's really good to get that, of course, in the end.
32:33I think Countdown's like a rollercoaster.
32:35At the start, you just want to get off
32:37and by the end, you just want to get on it again.
32:40Yeah, it was close. Sue has played very well.
32:43Best of luck.
32:45She's got past the curse.
32:46Don't you start with a curse!
32:48I don't want to hear that.
32:49I'll take your goodie bag away from you.
32:52It's been really good to have you here.
32:54Thank you very much.
32:55Thank you so much.
32:56Well done, Phil. Unlock it.
32:57APPLAUSE
32:59Come on, Sue.
33:00Three wins, that's it.
33:02Oh, the magic glasses have done the job.
33:06How do you feel?
33:07Great.
33:08Is this your first experience of Countdown?
33:10I was on in 1993.
33:12Wow.
33:13And did you win?
33:14Twice.
33:15Twice.
33:16So you've beaten the 1993 record.
33:19Yes.
33:20Now, what's the rule, Susie?
33:22If she was to win six, would the other two carry over?
33:27Would that make her a two-part OctoChamp?
33:30Well, I think an honorary two-part OctoChamp.
33:33Officially, no.
33:34A sympathy OctoChamp.
33:35I agree.
33:36So not something you want at all.
33:38You want to do the eight this time.
33:40Well, Sue, keep it up.
33:41The magic glasses are doing the business.
33:43And, well, Levi, it's just been magic to have you in Dictionary Corner
33:47because not just on air but off air.
33:49Thank you so much, man.
33:50Thank you so much.
33:51Brilliant.
33:52Wonderful.
33:53APPLAUSE
33:54Brilliant stuff.
33:55And now you can't tease me about the curse anymore.
33:58That's gone.
33:59That's old news.
34:00Well done, Sue.
34:01But who's in tomorrow, Colin?
34:02Well, you wouldn't want to be in tomorrow after Levi Roots,
34:05but it's the Irish comedian and my friend Neil Delamere,
34:08huge Countdown fan, never, ever been in the studio,
34:10so it's going to be brilliant.
34:12But we've reached the finish line for today.
34:14We'll be under starter's order, same time, same place tomorrow.
34:17Rachel, Susie and I will be here in Count On Us.
