00:00You've come for the egg.
00:03Here it is.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo,
00:06and today we're counting down our picks for the top 10 Game of Thrones Easter eggs in House of the Dragon.
00:11It was an ugly thing, I regret it.
00:13We play an ugly game.
00:14For this list, we're looking at the subtlest and or most notable little details and references
00:20connecting this HBO prequel series with its flagship show over the course of its first season.
00:25If you haven't seen either series yet, there will be spoilers.
00:29Were there any other Easter eggs you noticed?
00:31Light up the comments below.
00:38Which is all to say that House of the Dragon starts off similarly to how Game of Thrones ends,
00:43and begins.
00:59To clarify, the prologue for the former shows us the appointment of King Viserys
01:04after a great council ponders the succession with no clear-cut air.
01:08Something similar happens in the finale of Thrones when the sitting lords of the Seven Kingdoms settle on Bran.
01:14Will you lead the Seven Kingdoms to the best of your abilities from this day until your last day?
01:25Why do you think I came all this way?
01:28Meanwhile, House of the Dragon also echoes the previous show's premiere by depicting the death of an Arryn.
01:34Much like how the murder of Hand of the King Jon Arryn kicks off the War of the Five Kings,
01:39the death of Queen Emma lights the spark for the Dance of Dragons.
01:52As George Lucas would say,
01:53it's like poetry, it rhymes.
01:58Unless you know the name of every episode of Game of Thrones,
02:02you're liable to miss a few references here and there.
02:04Case in point, Sir Otto Hightower's conversation with Alicent in Episode 3.
02:10With Alicent reluctant to have her son Aegon usurp Rhaenyra as heir to the Iron Throne,
02:16Otto reminds her of Aegon's birthright with a very familiar phrase.
02:20To deny that he is heir to the throne is to assail the laws of gods and men.
02:24Indeed.
02:25The Laws of Gods and Men is the title of the sixth episode of Thrones Season 4,
02:30which is memorable for seeing Tyrion put on trial for Joffrey's murder.
02:33You admit you poisoned the king?
02:35No.
02:36Of that I'm innocent.
02:38I'm guilty of a far more monstrous crime.
02:42I'm guilty of being a dwarf.
02:45Honestly, we love any reference to that standout episode,
02:49but the only further connection we can think of
02:51is the House of the Dragon one also featuring the Lannisters,
02:54and often not in a becoming light.
02:57Lord Jason Lannister.
02:59I gathered that from all the lions.
03:03Speaking of Jason Lannister,
03:05you might be thinking to yourself that he and his twin brother Tyland look awfully familiar.
03:09I bring urgent news from the Stepstones.
03:11The crowdfeeder has dug in for siege on Bloodstone
03:14while his men sabotage our fleet under the cover of dark.
03:17Not today, Tyland.
03:18Both are played by the actor Jefferson Hall,
03:20whom you might recognize for being in the 2018 Halloween movie.
03:24However, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that Hall has played a Westerosi character before.
03:28I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name, sir.
03:30No, sir. I'm not a knight.
03:32I see. Well, it just so happens that I am.
03:36Back in Game of Thrones Season 1,
03:38Hall appeared as Ser Hugh of the Vale.
03:40He doesn't last long, as he is promptly killed in a joust with Gregor Clegane.
03:48Thankfully for Hall, his characters managed to survive the first season.
03:54And even if they don't last much longer,
03:56they likely won't have to posthumously deal with false claims of killing the Hand of the King like Ser Hugh did.
04:02Pity what happened to him,
04:04just when his life seemed to be going so nicely.
04:08If Ser Hugh poisoned him,
04:12who paid Ser Hugh?
04:15Someone who could afford it.
04:17Number 7. Kingdom of Ash and Bone
04:20Though they're different in their own right,
04:22Rhaenyra and Daenerys Targaryen were going to be compared to each other no matter what.
04:26And this callback will only further that likeness.
04:29The simple truth is this. We have more dragons than Aegon.
04:33Viserys spoke often of the Valyrian history, as I know them well.
04:38When dragons flew to war,
04:40everything burned.
04:42I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone.
04:46In the season finale,
04:48when Daemon suggests leaning into their dragon advantage in dealing with the greens,
04:52Rhaenyra shrewdly rejects this notion,
04:54aware of the fiery devastation that campaign would have on Westeros.
04:58If Viserys had three dragons and an army at his back,
05:02he'd have invaded King's Landing already.
05:04Conquering Westeros would be easy for you,
05:06but you're not here to be Queen of the Ashes.
05:10Her use of the ash motif harkens back to something Tyrion says
05:13and Dany echoes during the latter's conquest in Season 7 of Thrones.
05:17I am not here to be Queen of the Ashes.
05:21That's very nice to hear.
05:23Despite Dany's best intentions,
05:25that is exactly what she becomes when she sacks King's Landing.
05:29Let's just hope Rhaenyra can resist the temptation of abusing that kind of power.
05:33You freed your brother.
05:36You committed treason.
05:40I freed my brother.
05:45And you slaughtered his city.
05:51Weddings can be a royal pain,
05:54especially in Westeros.
05:56The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones did not go as planned.
06:00The Lannisters send their regards.
06:03Neither did Joffrey's wedding to Margaery,
06:06although we can't say we were sorry.
06:08The House of the Dragon's wedding between Rhaenyra and Laenor
06:10stayed true to this tradition.
06:12At the Welcome Feast,
06:13Ser Criston Cole brutally beat Laenor's lover Joffrey Lonmouth to death.
06:17You've yet to ask me for the truth of what happened.
06:20The truth does not matter.
06:22Joffrey's don't seem to fare well on either show.
06:25At least House of the Dragon is keeping things consistent.
06:28Incidentally, in the book Fire and Blood,
06:30things play out slightly differently,
06:32with Criston fatally wounding Joffrey during a joust.
06:35Number 5. Promise Me.
06:37Viserys' speech to Rhaenyra at the end of the first episode
06:40has oodles of callbacks to Game of Thrones,
06:43but we bet this one flew under most people's radars.
06:46Promise me this, Rhaenyra.
06:52Promise me.
06:54The exact words,
06:56promise me this, Rhaenyra, promise me,
06:58may not seem like much,
07:00but they're actually eerily similar to another pivotal moment in Game of Thrones.
07:05You're not a dream.
07:08No, I'm not a dream.
07:12I'm here.
07:13In the season 6 finale,
07:15Bran's vision takes him to the Tower of Joy
07:17where Lyanna Stark gives birth to Jon Snow.
07:20We don't hear Lyanna telling her brother Ned
07:22that Rhaegar Targaryen is the father,
07:24but when she similarly has Ned promise to keep Jon safe,
07:28her words are almost the same as Viserys',
07:31save for the name change.
07:33Ned.
07:36Ned, promise me.
07:40While many fans were debating
07:42on whether or not the Crabfeeder has greyscale,
07:44he does.
07:45Another aspect of his appearance
07:47is perhaps an even curiouser detail.
07:49House Velaryon is coming for you!
07:51As is plain to see,
07:53the Crabfeeder, real name Cragus Drehar,
07:56has taken to covering his face with a broken mask,
07:59one he got from a shipwreck.
08:01The Crabfeeder is backed by powerful entities
08:03within the Free Cities
08:04who wish to see Westeros weakened.
08:08And the King's failures have allowed him to accumulate strength.
08:11The mask itself is of Ghiscari origin,
08:14so it's unsurprising that it's fashioned
08:16after the symbol of the Ghiscari Empire,
08:18the Harpy.
08:19Anyone who watched Game of Thrones seasons 5 and 6
08:22will know the Sons of the Harpy,
08:24a brutal gang of Merenese rebels
08:26who oppose Daenerys' rule.
08:28They too wear Harpy masks.
08:31It's an interesting connection
08:33between two insurgencies
08:35that take place centuries apart.
08:45Obviously,
08:46House of the Dragon has a lot of dialogue
08:48that recalls famous Game of Thrones quotes.
08:50And this one is no different.
08:52Upon learning of Aegon's transgressions
08:54with Diana the Serving Girl in episode 8,
08:56Alicent scolds her
08:59Though the inflection and delivery
09:01are not entirely the same,
09:03the words are shared with someone else
09:05who also virtually presided over the realm,
09:07Tywin Lannister.
09:15Tywin says this to his son Tyrion,
09:17though they turn out to be famous last words,
09:19as Tyrion then fatally shoots him
09:21with a crossbow.
09:23Thankfully,
09:24Tyrion doesn't die.
09:26Thankfully,
09:28things go a little better for Alicent here,
09:30as her familial relationships
09:32seem at least a little better.
09:34Baby steps.
09:40The Great MacGuffin in episode 2
09:42is the dragon egg that Daemon spirits
09:44away to Dragonstone.
09:56As mentioned,
09:58the egg
10:00is from the dragon Dreamfyre,
10:02who may have a serious connection
10:04to Game of Thrones' Daenerys.
10:06In the books, Dreamfyre is written
10:08by Aegon the Conqueror's granddaughter,
10:10Rhaena Targaryen.
10:12At one point, Rhaena's sister-in-law
10:14slash lover Elisa similarly steals
10:16some of Dreamfyre's eggs.
10:18While not confirmed,
10:20it has been speculated that these eggs
10:22are the ones that eventually end up
10:24at the very beginning of A Song of Ice and Fire.
10:26Dragon's eggs, Daenerys,
10:28from the Shadowlands
10:30beyond Asshai.
10:32The ages have turned them to stone,
10:34but they will always be beautiful.
10:36While we barely see Dreamfyre herself
10:38in the first season of House of the Dragon,
10:40she could just be the mother
10:42to Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.
10:44Dracarys.
10:46Before we unveil our top pick,
10:48here are some honorable mentions.
10:50Ser Harrold Westerling resigns.
10:52The controversial succession of a king
10:54leads to a new Lord Commander of the Kingsguard
10:56on both shows.
10:58Your Grace.
11:00The council has determined that
11:02Ser Jaime Lannister will take your place
11:04as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.
11:06Play.
11:08Rhaenyra and Daemon witness a political play
11:10in much the same vein
11:12as the first season.
11:15Poison!
11:17Murder!
11:19I gasp!
11:21I die!
11:23I limp!
11:25Candle in the window.
11:27Sansa's fails in Game of Thrones,
11:29but Talia's definitely gets the message across.
11:31My condolences
11:33on the passing of your king.
11:35Royal Inheritance.
11:37Jace and Luke look even less like
11:39Laenor than Joffrey Baratheon,
11:41but they do have a lot in common.
11:43Jace looks less like Laenor than Joffrey Baratheon
11:45looks like Robert.
11:51Choose Violence.
11:53Otto Hightower and Cersei Lannister
11:55have similar vocabularies.
11:57To choose violence here
11:59is to declare war against your king.
12:01I choose violence.

12:19Valyrian Steel Dagger
12:21This easter egg may be obvious
12:23for those who recognize it,
12:25but it's undeniably the single greatest
12:27connection to Game of Thrones
12:29on House of the Dragon.
12:31Aegon called his dream
12:33the Song of Ice and Fire.
12:35This secret
12:37has been passed
12:40from king to heir since Aegon's time.
12:44Now you must promise to carry it
12:46and protect it.
12:48Though not outright stated,
12:50it's evident that the Valyrian Steel Dagger
12:52in the possession of Viserys for most of the season
12:54is the same one that appears
12:56in pivotal moments on Thrones.
12:58First, when an assassin fails to kill Bran.
13:00And second, when Arya slays the Night King
13:02and ends the Great War.
13:10The Song of Ice and Fire
13:14This proves especially thematic
13:16considering the text etched into the dagger.
13:18As Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy
13:20foretells of the prince that was promised
13:22who's destined to save
13:24the world of the living.
13:26From my blood
13:28come the prince that was promised
13:33and his will be the Song of Ice and Fire.
