The government is considering new regulations to ban children from registering on social media platforms as part of efforts to combat online pedophilia in the country.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday (Aug 10), Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil voiced concern that social media platforms are not doing enough to prevent children under 13 from creating accounts.

Fahmi urged parents to closely monitor their children's online activities to keep them off social media and reduce the risks of child sexual exploitation.

00:00The social media platform does not allow children under the age of 13 to have a social media account.
00:21The issue now is that the social media platform only puts it as a guideline.
00:30And maybe there are a few things that we will emphasize to them,
00:35how to avoid children from registering for a social media account.
00:40Because we know that sometimes there are children who will use various ways to have a social media account.
00:49For example, they ask older friends to open an account and many other ways.
00:58What I emphasize is that the social media platforms do not seem to be too serious
01:05to prevent children under the age of 13 from opening and having and using social media accounts.
01:13We hope that we can prevent children under the age of 13 from having social media accounts.
01:20And we also do not want criminals to use these platforms,
01:25especially for sexual harassment and sexual crimes against children.
01:31So we want to put an end to all of these pedophiles who use fake accounts to access social media platforms.
