00:00Hi kids! Today we will learn a noun phrase and a verb phrase. So let's start.
00:09Sentence. We know that a sentence is a group of words that make some complete sense.
00:18Mary is a good girl.
00:22We have also learned about the parts of a sentence.
00:27The two main parts that constitute a sentence are subject and predicate.
00:34The subject is that part of a sentence around which the whole sentence revolves.
00:41Or it names a person or a thing we are talking about.
00:48A subject can be hidden too, as we learned in our next assignment.
00:54He is waiting for me outside. Here, who are we talking about?
01:00We are talking about he. So he is the subject of this sentence.
01:07And the rest of the sentence is talking about the subject he.
01:12So that rest of sentence is the predicate.
01:17So predicate is that part of the sentence that gives some information about the subject.
01:26We are going to play cricket.
01:30Here, the subject, that is, the one we are talking about is we.
01:37Are going to play cricket is the information about we.
01:43So, are going to play cricket is the predicate of the sentence.
01:49And we is the subject.
01:53Now we will be learning about some more parts of a sentence.
01:58A sentence has a subject and a predicate.
02:03The subject can further have article and noun and predicate can further have verb, article and noun.
02:12Kids, we know that a phrase is a group of words.
02:17So, a group of words that contains a naming word or a noun is called a noun phrase.
02:26And a group of words that contains a verb is called a verb phrase.
02:33Now let's learn this concept with the help of examples.
02:38Green grass covered the field.
02:41Pick out the noun phrase and the verb phrase in this sentence.
02:46Let's first identify the nouns or naming words in this sentence.
02:51Both grass and field are nouns or naming words.
02:58But do they exist among a group of words?
03:01Yes, they exist in groups.
03:05So, green grass and the field are noun phrases.
03:11Now kids, can you identify the subject and the predicate in this sentence?
03:19Green grass is the subject and covered the field is the predicate.
03:26So, the noun phrase, green grass, functions as the subject here whereas the other noun phrase, the field, lies in the predicate of the sentence.
03:39So kids, a noun phrase can exist in the subject as well as in the predicate.
03:48Now let's identify the verb phrase here.
03:53The phrase containing the verb is known as a verb phrase.
03:58The verb in this sentence is covered.
04:02So, the phrase covered the field is a verb phrase here.
04:09All the friends of Annie love chocolate.
04:14Here, the noun phrase is all the friends of Annie.
04:19Chocolate is a noun but not a noun phrase as it is a single word and not a group.
04:27Love chocolate is a verb phrase here as it contains the verb love.
04:34The things lying on the table are looking untidy.
04:40The noun phrase here is things lying on the table which also happens to be the subject of the sentence.
04:50The rest of the sentence are looking very untidy is a verb phrase and also the predicate of the sentence.
05:00There can be multiple verbs in a single verb phrase.
05:06This table can be lifted with the help of two more people.
05:10Here, this table and two more people are noun phrases in this sentence.
05:18The verb phrase here is can be lifted.
05:23It contains helping verbs can and be and a main verb lifted.
