00:20-"Chop Chop talked about his brother, Daniel.
00:22He was killed on September 7, 2020,
00:25when he was just 22 years old.
00:27So Chop Chop says,
00:29right now, I'm 22 years old.
00:31This is my life,
00:33but I'm continuing what my brother was supposed to do.
00:36I'm a boxer because I followed my brother to the gym,
00:40and so I have to make his life
00:43and the loss of his life be worthwhile."
00:46Bernardo Osuna alongside Chris Algieri,
00:50six-rounder between Albert Chop Chop Gonzalez
00:53and Damian Alcala,
00:55a former U.S. Marine who started boxing at age 24
00:58after he finished his service in the Marines,
01:00where he was a helicopter mechanic
01:03on the CH-53 Super Stallions.
01:06-"Yeah, I've actually called a few of Alcala's fights, man.
01:08He's a really tough eight-and-four fighter.
01:10You got to look past the record on a guy like him.
01:12Super, super tough. Nickname's El Doro.
01:14And, you know, I'm curious to see Chop Chop
01:17and how he's able to deal with someone like this,
01:19who's got a ton of experience with some pretty tough guys."
01:21-"A nice right hand there from Alcala,
01:23who says the nickname was coined in Tijuana
01:26by former champion Raúl Elgíbaro Pérez,
01:28who asked his trainer,
01:29hey, you going to bring that kid that's tough to sparring?
01:33He says, which one? The one that's hard to deal with.
01:35So El Duro means hard to deal with.
01:39Gonzalez, with his quick hands,
01:41is trying to deal with El Duro here
01:43in the center of the ring.
01:47-"And Chop Chop's in real tight behind that high guard.
01:50He's got a nice jab, beautiful one-two there
01:51right down the middle.
01:53Hit that right hand behind the jab.
01:54Beautiful fundamentals there from Chop Chop."
02:01-"Chop Chop is a man who says God does work in mysterious ways.
02:05When his brother was killed, he was 18 years old,
02:09and a month later,
02:10he found out that his girlfriend Jasmine was pregnant.
02:13He had her blocked. He didn't want to talk to anybody.
02:15He was mourning on his own.
02:17And then he said, that changed my life,
02:19and here I am, four years later,
02:22being able to feed my daughter, have our own place.
02:25Boxing is my vehicle to sanity, pretty much."
02:31-"Keep an eye on Chop Chop, man,
02:32and these little exchanges on the inside.
02:34He's got some real chippy shots that are hard to see
02:36that he keeps catching Alcala with.
02:39He's not seeing these shots,
02:40and that's how you really hurt somebody.
02:42I know that Alcala's very durable,
02:43but getting hit with a punch you don't see
02:46can be really damaging."
02:48-"Like that. I mean, Alcala was trying to set up his shots,
02:51and next thing you know, a lightning-quick right hand
02:54from Gonzalez catches him."
02:56-"Yeah, really nice catch-and-shoot
02:57there on the inside from Chop Chop."
03:00-"Nice body work there from Alcala."
03:02-"That's the thing about Alcala.
03:03He's just one of those guys, man.
03:04He's in your face. He's in great shape.
03:06He's always in great condition.
03:08He looked fantastic on the scales yesterday.
03:11He's going to get there by attrition and hard work."
03:15-"I saw him blinking out of his right eye momentarily.
03:17I don't know if one of those shots either, you know,
03:20ooh, caught him on the inside,
03:21and Alcala goes to the body early here.
03:24Quick reminder that Robert Garcia is not at this fight
03:28because he is with Virgil Ortiz,
03:30who takes on Sergey Bulchuk tonight,
03:33so there's a change in that corner.
03:35Robert Garcia Jr. and Jose Contreras.
03:39-"I feel he's, uh, how do you say that?
03:40Not too strong?
03:42Like, there's still moments where
03:43just because he's throwing a lot more,
03:45you know, those could be close rounds right there.
03:46Just because he's trying to stay a little bit busier.
03:48He's not landing a lot,
03:49you just got to counter a little bit more, okay?
03:50Right there, when you're blocking,
03:52boom, boom, you're making a miss, slip, boom,
03:54give him a little body shot, okay?
03:55Just don't let him go too long without you touching him again, okay?
03:57On the outside, the jab, keep that jab going, okay?
04:01Just don't let him outwork you and then put you against ropes
04:02and you stay there too long, okay?"
04:11-"Yeah."
04:12-"You're waiting a little too long.
04:14I need you to move laterally and then pop with a counter."
04:16-"When you're blocking a lot of the shots,
04:17you just got to counter a little bit more, okay?
04:19Deep breath.
04:21Deep breath."
04:27-"Chop Chop was telling us, you know,
04:30there's so much belief my dad has in me,
04:32it makes me better than what I really am.
04:35I can't let my dad down.
04:36And some great stories they were telling us about
04:39when he was off due to his brother passing away,
04:42hadn't trained for four years,
04:43his dad needed to get him out of the funk,
04:45takes him to the gym, says,
04:47all right, I'm going to enter you in a national tournament.
04:51These kids have been trying to win this tournament for years,
04:53Chris, you've done there, you've been there.
04:56And next thing you know, he goes out and he wins it.
04:58The kid that he beat was crying and he's like,
05:01here, I'll give you this belt.
05:02I got 38 of these at home."
05:05-"Yeah, that's rare.
05:06And that's why he's here tonight.
05:10He's a natural, intuitive fighter.
05:13Now obviously putting in the work, you see his fundamentals,
05:15great hand position.
05:17Really nice fundamentals here being shown by Chop Chop.
05:20Always back to that jab.
05:22Nice feints there.
05:45Yeah, this is something that Alcala needs to be careful with.
05:48He does not want to match wits at mid-distance here
05:51with Chop Chop.
05:52He's got a better jab, better understanding of his distance.
05:57Alcala's one of those guys, he's got to be in your face,
05:59pushing the pressure, catching your machats in between.
06:07-"Both respecting what the other brings to the table.
06:10The feints there from Gonzalez trying to freeze Alcala
06:13and then set up that overhand right.
06:14I was about to say, I'm loving these feints.
06:19Really nice to see such a great judge of distance and set-ups.
06:22That three-punch combo, too.
06:24I mean, it's just off-the-chart IQ for Chop Chop.
06:36Just like how he always goes back to the center of the ring,
06:39little bit of movement, back to the jab.
06:40Always back to the jab for the set-up.
06:42Using feints to land punches.
06:45Just seems like everything is done for a reason.
06:47No wasted motion in there.
06:49-"That one-two is just so crisp.
06:53There's no wasted movement with Albert Gonzalez
06:57when he's in that ring.
06:59Excellent at cutting off the ring.
07:04You see Alcala trying to close that gap
07:07and push Gonzalez on the back foot.
07:10Just a judge of range.
07:11You know, he's a shorter guy, shorter reach,
07:13but still is able to make Alcala miss
07:17everything that he throws.
07:25-"Body work there from Alcala.
07:28You'll see a lot of that in tonight's main event.
07:30Luis Alberto Lopez, not your typical champion.
07:33He walks down opponents almost with reckless abandon.
07:35He says his style is ingrained into his DNA.
07:43Everybody thinks they can handle the champ
07:45until they're inside the room with them.
07:46Yeah, it happened to Joel Gonzalez.
07:48It happened to Michael Conlon.
07:50And then what happened?
07:52He picked them up from the floor and **** himself.
07:55Bring your diapers, because you're going to **** yourself.
08:05This wild, awkward, but fun style of Lopez.
08:36Chris, you have the unenviable task
08:39of having to prepare for one Manny Pacquiao.
08:42What is it like to have to face someone
08:46who is so unconventional?
08:48There really is no way to prepare for someone
08:50like Evanado Lopez or Manny Pacquiao.
08:52You know, they're so unorthodox.
08:53You're not going to be able to get fighters
08:54that are going to be able to mimic them truly.
08:56You have to have the mindset that when you go into the ring,
08:58you're going to be ready for anything.
08:59So if it doesn't work in the beginning,
09:01you got to find a way.
09:02So having that mental resilience going into the ring
09:04would be my best advice for fighting someone
09:07like Evanado Lopez.
09:08Pretty much be water.
09:09You have to just continually be changing.
09:12Channel Bruce Lee.
09:13Absolutely.
09:14Oh, man, the right hands on Chop Chop is landing.
09:17Absolutely beautiful stuff.
09:18Setting everything up with the jab and the feints.
09:22And he hasn't even gone to the body really yet
09:24in a concerted effort.
09:26No, it's been all jabs and straight right hands.
09:29And just put all the setups.
09:30Oh, there it is again.
09:32He just freezes Alcala.
09:34And then the way the right connects makes it so visually,
09:40the judges just see how effective it is.
09:42Very eye-catching, very obvious.
09:44But also, it's doing damage.
09:45You're seeing Alcala's legs getting a little wobble,
09:48getting a little wrong.
09:49Super tough guy, obviously, and he's in good shape.
09:51But there it is again.
09:52You see that little wobble in the back leg
09:53when that right hand lands on the chin.
09:55He's lost four fights, but he's never been stopped.
09:58And it's all been against undefeated fighters.
10:01So really, you look at a guy whose four losses have come
10:05against a combined 27-0.
10:06He's durable.
10:07You know that.
10:08You've seen him fight.
10:09But yet tonight, he's being tested like never before
10:12by that right hand.
10:13Yeah, and that was my point about you
10:14got to look past the record of a guy like him.
10:15You know, he's aged four.
10:16Yeah, he's got four losses.
10:17But like you said, who did he lose to and how did he lose?
10:22That left hand from Alcala is trying to find a home.
10:24And how do you beat an overhand right with the left hook?
10:31There's the body shot you're asking for, Bruno.
10:33He hasn't done anything to body yet.
10:35Set it up beautifully with a nice right uppercut
10:37down the middle.
10:37Splits the guard.
10:38Goes right back to it.
10:39Left hook once again.
10:41Be safe.
10:41It ain't broke.
10:42Don't fix it.
10:42But when you have it in your arsenal, why not use it?
10:45And that's exactly.
10:46It's all about timing.
10:47It's so, you said it, intuitive.
10:49It's his feel.
10:50It's when he understands that it's time to throw it.
10:53Now there's an effort to go downstairs now
10:55trying to weaken Alcala.
10:56Well, I think with Gonzalez here tonight,
10:59he's been doing such a good job on the outside.
11:02And Alcala's in trouble and down for the first time here
11:06in round three.
11:15It's going to be a long 30 seconds for Damian Alcala.
11:19The former Marine gets welcomed with the right uppercut
11:22from Chop Chop Gonzalez, who's looking to chop,
11:25chop the former Marines.
11:28I've seen Alcala get beat in fights.
11:30I've never seen him get beat like this.
11:32He is getting tattooed and hurt with these shots.
11:34Oh, that left uppercut now from Chop Chop.
11:37And he chops down Alcala for the second time.
11:40And referee Rocky Burke calls off the fight.
11:43And this young man is now 10 and 0 with six knockouts.
11:47And the sky is the limit, Chris.
11:49The way he is looking is just devastating.
11:53Yeah, I mean, he's lived up to the hype.
11:55We heard a lot about him before this fight.
11:57From the fighter meeting, he was fantastic.
11:58You know, listening to his stories
11:59and where he's at in his maturity.
12:01You know, you said about what Robert Garcia
12:03has been saying about him and what he thinks of him.
12:05I mean, he showed out tonight against a very, very tough guy.
12:08And Robert Garcia just doesn't keep praise
12:10on every one of his fighters.
12:11I mean, he is as honest about what you're seeing in the ring
12:15and what he sees in the gym.
12:17But when he gushed about Bam Rodriguez,
12:19he turned into a pound-for-pound fighter.
12:21The way he speaks about this young man,
12:23Albert Chop Chop Gonzalez,
12:25and it's not just, Chris, what he does in the ring.
12:28It's the camaraderie he brings to the gym.
12:31It's how he gets everybody invigorated.
12:33And that energy is contagious.
12:36Yeah, absolutely.
12:36I mean, that's one thing about that gym.
12:38The culture, the culture of the gym matters.
12:40It's very important, and this man embodies that.
12:42Yes, the winning culture of the RGBA.
12:45And what about your trainer being at a bigger fight
12:48and Albert Gonzalez just going out there
12:50and doing things with Robert Garcia Jr.?
12:52Let's take a look at this knockout.
12:54Yeah, this is that first knockdown here.
12:55Beautiful catch and shoot there,
12:56a little bit of roll and shoulder there.
12:58And then that right hand, man.
12:59Once Gonzalez was getting those feints going
13:02and landing those beautiful, long right hands
13:05right in the chin of Alcala, he had no answer for them.
13:08And he was getting consistently hurt and broken down.
13:11I wasn't surprised that the stoppage came so quickly.
13:13Look at that.
13:14I mean, right on the point of the chin.
13:16You really can't land a right hand cleaner than that.
13:18And on the end of the punch, too,
13:19where you have the most power.
13:21And then right here at the end,
13:22the left hook down the middle splits the guard.
13:23Uppercut, uppercut.
13:25Yeah, I mean, there was nothing left for Alcala
13:28to do at that point.
13:30He was already hurt from the first knockdown,
13:31already hurt from those right hands.
13:33Then you get hit with left hooks like that.
13:34Everything so precise, right on the money,
13:37punishing punches back to back to back.
13:40And even a tough guy like Alcala,
13:42I mean, he had no answer tonight.
13:44I mean, you don't need CompuBox numbers
13:46to tell how accurate and precise.
13:49And if you want to teach a fighter,
13:50how do you feint, throw a jab,
13:52and then an overhand right after?
13:54This was a classical, teachable moment
13:58from how Albert Gonzalez looks.
14:00Impressive in his third round stoppage win.
14:04What was the time of the stoppage?
14:06Mark Chinook has an answer.
14:07Ladies and gentlemen, here inside Tingley Coliseum,
14:10Albuquerque, New Mexico, referee Rocky Burke
14:13calls a stop to this bout at two minutes,
14:1651 seconds of round number three.
14:19Your winner by technical knockout,
14:22Albert Chop Chop Gonzalez!
14:27He said, when my daughter was born,
14:30I hadn't even made my pro debut.
14:31I didn't have a dime to my name.
14:34Now, boxing is allowing me to give Camila a better life.
