00:00So we are now here in Sikuhor, this is what they call the healing island or mystical island.
00:13And there is a time here, usually during Easter, Lenten season, they get materials from nature.
00:24Usually they choose the ones with stings, and if they are in the sea, the first thing they look for is the puffer fish.
00:35The fish that float when they feel threatened.
00:38They say there are a lot of them here in this shore.
00:54Less than a minute later, the puffer fish showed up.
01:06Instead of moving, it became curious and slowly approached me.
01:13It has big eyes and a pointed mouth, like a cute cartoon character.
01:24Later on, a colorful puffer fish showed up.
01:34Because of its beautiful color, it is impossible not to notice it below.
01:42But don't be fooled, puffer fish become brave when there is danger in their lives.
01:51If cornered, the puffer fish can swallow its body to scare the enemy.
02:07The white spotted puffer fish, or butete, is fast in finding food.
02:15It eats the grass one by one to have its breakfast.
02:20It's attention is on one plant, a zooplankton.
02:30But it's not going to be easy.
02:37Because the salt is light, the puffer fish doesn't stop chasing it.
02:48Until finally, it has food.
02:57But it's still not happy.
03:01Next, the upside-down jellyfish showed up.
03:10Using four strong teeth, it swallowed the jellyfish one by one until it had no escape.
03:22It was victorious that day.
03:29If below, they are just afraid of the big one.
03:35Above, they are truly dead.
03:42This July, two children are on the verge of hospital because of eating jellyfish in Lamitan, Basilan.
03:52A member of their family was taken to the hospital.
03:56According to Nysa, the mother of the child who died, the jellyfish was given by her neighbor to the children.
04:06I accompanied my son to eat.
04:09I cooked two pieces.
04:11That night, around 2 p.m., my husband's niece and I went to sleep.
04:26Until 4 a.m., the other one died.
04:33My son woke up.
04:35I said, your cousin is dead.
04:38My son said, I'm still sleeping.
04:40He said, his stomach hurts.
04:42I cooked two pieces of jellyfish.
04:45My son and I ate it.
04:48Nysa felt dizzy and nauseous.
04:52When the two children died, I felt like I was weakening.
04:58I couldn't stand up straight.
05:02I vomited.
05:04I couldn't walk.
05:06I couldn't do anything.
05:08My head was aching.
05:10My neck was aching.
05:12I couldn't do anything.
05:14The nurse said, her heart is gone.
05:18Smooth Blossom, a type of jellyfish, is said to be eaten by children.
05:26There is no antidote or medicine if you are poisoned by jellyfish.
05:31According to experts, if you accidentally eat jellyfish,
05:35you need to give oxygen to the patient and immediately go to the nearest hospital.
05:42It contains a poison called tetrodotoxin,
05:46which can be found in the skin and innards of jellyfish.
05:51But the reputation of pufferfish in the province of Siquijor is different.
05:58According to the pharmacist,
06:00pufferfish are said to be able to cure all diseases,
06:06all kinds of diseases, and all kinds of living things in the sea.
06:13We catch it and burn it every Friday and cook it every Saturday
06:22which we call minasa or black wax.
06:29When they become old, they will use it for healing or the so-called healing.
06:37For Jonel, even if there is a strong taste of jellyfish,
06:41it is good for healing.
06:46They usually use the poisonous things in the sea to make jellyfish.
06:55We will also use the same materials in our pufferfish
07:01to cure the victims of jellyfish.
07:05According to experts, pufferfish can give temporary infection
07:10because of the warm moist air they get here.
07:15Although there are other research results using tetrodotoxin
07:19as cancer pain treatment or local anesthetic in other countries,
07:23it still needs to be thoroughly evaluated by our health department.
07:27There is no scientific study on how to cure pufferfish.
07:34We recommend people to consult a doctor.
07:44It is true that pufferfish can be poisonous,
07:48but they are not intended to be food for humans.
07:53Underwater, they play a more important role in cleaning the coral reef
08:02so that we can eat more pufferfish.
08:06Again, not all pufferfish can be eaten.
08:11Most of them are more delicious underwater to help us.
