00:04APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34I heard an extraordinary story recently.
00:37It came out of the Philippines.
00:39It involved a fisherman who struggled and strained
00:42and dragged onto his boat this enormous thing.
00:45It weighed 32kg and he sort of looked at it.
00:49He wasn't altogether sure what it was,
00:51but he stuffed it underneath the bed.
00:53Had it been a pearl, it was so enormous,
00:55apparently it would have been worth £75 million.
00:58Anyway, he popped it underneath the bed
01:00and then dragged it out ten years later
01:03and gave it to the local museum.
01:06The local city hall actually put it on display.
01:09It turned out it was a pearl.
01:11Extraordinary. So there it is, the city hall.
01:14If you fancy, you know...
01:16Let me just tell you, it's 67cm long. Extraordinary.
01:20What could you do with a 67cm pearl?
01:23Good question. You give it to the local city hall.
01:26Who would have £75 million knocking around
01:29just in case that ever was for sale?
01:32Actually, Rachel, no, come on, there are nutters out there
01:36who, in order to get the oldest, biggest...
01:40There's so much dodgy money floating around the world these days
01:45and to own the biggest pearl the world has ever seen,
01:48somebody would do it just to have it, I think.
01:50OK, fair enough.
01:52Now then, Rachel, we've got Doug Roberts back.
01:54Doug, of course, is the child's entertainer from Somthing in Worthing.
01:58Welcome back, Doug.
02:01And you beat Amber, smashing player.
02:03She was very good player.
02:05But you got there, well done.
02:07And you're up against Kevin Stokes. Welcome, Kevin.
02:09Hello, Nick.
02:10From Portsmouth, runs a media production company.
02:14This is sort of films and videos?
02:17Yes, it's corporate sales conferences, promotional videos,
02:20award ceremonies, that sort of thing.
02:22It's a great fun, fast-moving world.
02:24Yeah, it's a great world, yeah.
02:26And also you like a bit of a challenge.
02:28You abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.
02:31I did.
02:32For charity?
02:33I did, yes, I did it for the motor neurone disease charity.
02:36Good man.
02:37300 feet.
02:38Whoa.
02:39And it took nine minutes.
02:40Did it?
02:41Yeah.
02:42I'm surprised it didn't take shorter, you're quite a big, heavy fellow.
02:45But there we are.
02:46Now then, let's have a big round of applause then
02:48for Kevin and Doug Roberts.
02:50APPLAUSE
02:53And over in the corner then, of course, Susie Dent,
02:58and lawyer, TV personality, historian, classicist,
03:02my good friend Margaret Manford.

04:40what have you dredged out of that?
04:43Well, there's unpriced. Is that a word?
04:46It is. That's where it seems very unfair.
04:48Sorry, Doug.
04:50Yes, unpriced is there.
04:52That would give you an eight.
04:54And pounder for seven, otherwise.

09:11And the answer is flea wort.
09:16What is flea wort, Susie?
09:18It's a Eurasian plant and it looks a bit like ragwort
09:21and it's related to ragwort, ragwort,
09:24and it's reputed to drive away fleas, so very useful.
09:27Cat's purposes.

13:12MUSIC PLAYS
13:21MUSIC CONTINUES
13:42Kevin.

13:48So, Doug.

13:54And add the other seven?
13:55Yeah, 457.
13:56There we go. Well done.
13:59Neatly done.
14:01Propels you into a lead, 29 to Kevin's 18,
14:04as we turn to Margaret.
14:06Margaret, yesterday, we were up on Hadrian's Wall,
14:11and then you suddenly decided to go all Arctic.
14:15What was that about?
14:16Well, I thought I'd go a bit further north.
14:18Yeah.
14:19So I went on a cruise to the Arctic in July,
14:22which was absolutely fantastic.
14:24And the main reason I went was because I wanted to see polar bears.
14:28And we saw eight polar bears quite close up,
14:31which was absolutely fantastic,
14:33including three together that were on the shore
14:36of a little rocky island.
14:38And it looked like two of them were boxing,
14:41on their hind legs, boxing, they're big animals.
14:44And the other one was lying down.
14:46And then the two would stop this boxing, and one would lie down,
14:50and the other one would get up, and there'd be another boxing match.
14:53I thought, what is going on?
14:55Because it didn't look like they were having a real fight.
14:58And the expert on bears, the wildlife expert that was with us,
15:02he said, you know what this is?
15:04He said, he'd never seen it before, it's really rare to see.
15:07This was a mother bear, who was slightly bigger than the other two,
15:11trying to tell the cubs that, look, it's time to go off on your own.
15:15They were about two and a half.
15:17She would have been ready to mate again.
15:20And they'd been trailing around,
15:22having her catching all the seals and everything for them,
15:25and she was saying to them, no, you've got to go and leave home now.
15:28And periodically they'd just lie down,
15:30oh, we don't want to go, and she'd go and duff on them.
15:33Exactly like trying to get teenagers out of the house.
15:36Lovely, what a good story.
15:38But these were, of course, when they're on their hind legs,
15:41they're eight feet or whatever they are.
15:43Yes, very tall.
15:45A large female weighs about 300 kilos,
15:47and the males can be up to 500 kilos.
15:49I mean, they're huge animals,
15:51so you wouldn't stand much chance in the boxing match
15:54if one was the other participant.
15:56Yeah, yeah. But anyway, it was a great trip.
15:59Super trip. Lovely, very good.
16:05Thank you, Margaret. Now what shall we do?
16:07Let's go to Doug for a letters game.
16:09Can we start with a vowel, please, Rachel?
16:11Thank you, Doug. O

17:23Roadies. Two roadies.
17:25I don't think Margaret's got roadies, have you, Margaret?
17:28No. It's not your sort of word, really.
17:31No, I've got radios.
17:33That's what we used to call the wireless.
17:35Indeed.
17:37Susie?
17:39Well, I'm really lowering the tone with aroused for seven.
17:42Aroused. Yes.
17:44No, no.
17:46I... Yes.
17:50I was trying to work it into a poem, but I thought I'd better have it.

19:21Excellent.
19:23And the corner?
19:25I thought we had a nine.
19:27I thought we had a nine with Manitou's.
19:29But, sadly, it's just one Manitou, and he's got a capital M.
19:32In fact, it doesn't work.

25:09Very good. Anything else?
25:11With the I, short-waisted, etc, long-waisted.
25:13No, sevens was our best, actually.
25:15All right, thank you. 63 plays 30.
25:18Doug's in the lead there,
25:20as we turn to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
25:24Now, what have you got for us?
25:26Well, there is a joy sitting next to Margaret, Nick,
25:29because she enjoys words and language,
25:32and she was telling me something I didn't know,
25:34which was that the origin of Caligula, the name Caligula, the emperor,
25:38and apparently it came from the Caliga or Caligae sandals,
25:42very heavy-wearing sandals that Roman soldiers used to wear,
25:46and as a child, apparently Caligula would try on these sandals
25:51as part of a legionary costume,
25:53and they were little, I think Caligula means little boot or little sandal,
25:58and apparently when he did become emperor,
26:00he wore heavily jeweled, absolutely beautiful Caligae or Caligulae, indeed.
26:05And it got me thinking about the slightly strange story
26:09behind another famous person's surname, and that's Cicero.
26:14Now, Cicero is a name that comes from the Latin cica,
26:17which meant chickpea, believe it or not,
26:20and according to Plutarch, the name was first given to one of Cicero's ancestors
26:24because he had a cleft in his chin that was the size and shape of a chickpea.
26:29Very, very unlikely.
26:31More likely, apparently, according to surname experts in this field,
26:37onomatopoeias they're called,
26:39was that his whole family was involved in the selling of chickpeas,
26:43and actually this sort of name was quite common in those days.
26:46So Fabius, which was another very popular name of the time,
26:49meant bean, and then there was piso, meaning peas,
26:52so not quite as unlikely as possibly as it seems today.
26:56But it reminded me again of that lovely story of warts and all,
27:00that expression that goes back to Oliver Cromwell,
27:02Oliver Cromwell also, we think, who demanded that his portrait be painted
27:06completely unembellished and not in the style of the day
27:09when they all look absolutely fantastic with a shapely calf.
27:12And if you look at his death mask,
27:14you can see that he had a very prominent wart just here
27:17and had a slightly warty face.
27:20But, yeah, very unlikely that Cicero,
27:22he's supposed to have had probably the biggest influence on language
27:25than any other person, in fact, in Latin or any other European language indeed,
27:29that his name actually goes back to a tiny little pole school for chickpea.
27:33Very good. Well done.
27:41Lovely. Thank you. Thank you, Susie.
27:4363, page 30.

30:47It looks a pretty difficult one.
30:49Pretty difficult selection.
30:51What have you conjured out of that?
30:53There was one other eight there,
30:55and it's from poetry and prosody,
30:58and that's Cenarius.
31:00S-E-N-A-R-I-U-S, or Cenarius, indeed.
31:03A verse of six feet, especially an iambic trimeter, or trimeter.
31:07Really? Yep.
31:09Few of us, I think, would have known that.

31:14and we're into the final numbers game.
