00:47:37We're here with Jason Marsh, world-renowned botanist.
00:47:40Jason, shed a little bit of light on the new plant species
00:47:42that's been popping up.
00:47:44Well, quite frankly, we have no idea.
00:47:47Every leading botanist that I've spoken to in my field
00:47:50has had a complete loss as to the sudden emergence
00:47:53of this strange new flower that's popped up in California.
00:47:56Is there a possibility that this could just be a dormant species?
00:47:59Not likely.
00:48:01Plants like this don't normally stay dormant for centuries,
00:48:03and they just reappear overnight
00:48:05without some type of explanation.
00:48:07Okay.
00:48:08And what about the reports that it's been popping up
00:48:10in other parts of the country?
00:48:11Well, Cree, that's what's even stranger about this plant.
00:48:13I mean, the fact that it's popping up
00:48:15all over the southeastern United States,
00:48:17including parts of Florida,
00:48:18given the soil differences and climate changes
00:48:21in those different zones,
00:48:22that makes it even more troubling to study.

00:48:28with what we're talking about, describe the plant.
00:48:31Well, unfortunately, this plant has all the hallmarks
00:48:34of an invasive species,
00:48:36given its rapid growth and tremendous spread
00:48:39in such a short amount of time.
00:48:40Again, it's very concerning
00:48:42to me and my fellow botanists.
00:48:44All right, and where do you speculate
00:48:46this plant may have come from?
00:48:48Well, Cree, I know I'm probably going to be crucified
00:48:51in both the scientific and news community,
00:48:53but, you know, maybe it's time
00:48:55that we consider the possibility
00:48:57that this plant is not from this Earth.
00:49:01I mean, just possibly, you know,
00:49:03it could have came from that ship
00:49:05that crashed in the desert
00:49:07with new plant animal wildlife.
00:49:08Maybe that's not fake news after all.
00:49:11So you're saying there's a possibility
