Denmark made history in June 2024 as it issued the world's first livestock carbon tax. By 2030, farmers will have to pay nearly $100 per year for each animal. Will these taxes do more harm than good?

00:00DENMARK'S GOVERNMENT MAKES HISTORY AS IT ISSUES THE WORLD'S FIRST CARBON TAX ON LIVESTOCK
00:09LAWMAKERS SAY THE LEVIES ARE SET TO TAKE EFFECT IN 2030, AND COME JUST MONTHS AFTER FARMERS
00:15ACROSS EUROPE PROTESTED AGAINST A NUMBER OF THE EU'S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES.
00:21ALEX SALVI HAS THAT STORY.
00:24Denmark is finalizing a first-of-its-kind tax, one that takes aim at greenhouse emissions
00:28coming directly from livestock.
00:30Farmers will have to pay nearly $100 per year for each animal, in addition to about $20
00:35per ton of carbon dioxide emitted.
00:37The policy is set to go into effect beginning in the year 2030 as part of a new environmental
00:42approach in Europe, now spearheaded in Denmark.
00:46The decision comes in defiance of fierce opposition from farmers across the continent, who took
00:50to the streets over recent months, arguing regulations from their governments and bureaucrats
00:55in Brussels are threatening their livelihoods.
00:57They've been able to successfully negotiate some of their demands, but it's become clear
01:02that cracking down on the agriculture industry, which produces around a third of all greenhouse
01:07gas emissions, is a priority for European leaders.
01:11As heads of state gathered in Brussels back in June to select new European Union leadership
01:15positions, the Danish Prime Minister made it clear that addressing the environment was
01:20still a top priority.
01:21We have a lot of challenges in front of us, especially on migration, climate change.
01:26We still need a social balanced European Union and we need to have a stronger Europe in the
01:31future.
01:32So with all these challenges and all the decisions in front of us, I think it's important that
01:38we take a decision as fast and as quick as possible.
01:41Officials in Denmark say there will still be tax breaks for farmers who comply with
01:45the new policy, in order to alleviate some of the burden.
01:48With any revenue generated by the tax going to the industry's green transition, Prime
01:52Minister Fredriksson says she hopes this is just the start of a larger movement, one where
01:57the Nordic country paves the way for a similar tax that will take shape in neighboring countries
02:01and eventually around the world.
