00:34On The Daily Edition, two Aussie stars of stage, screen and song are joining forces.
00:39Johnny Young and Colleen Hewitt are also joining us live.
00:43That's coming up right after the break.
00:51The Daily Edition.
00:52Well, the only thing better than one Aussie music legend is, you guessed it, two Aussie
00:57music legends, right?
00:58Yep, that's right.
00:59And I reckon we could go one better.
01:01Three of the country's most loved entertainers are joining forces for a brand new show.
01:05And I reckon many of you out there, you're going to love it.
01:13He's a singer, songwriter and producer best known for inspiring a new generation on Young
01:18Talent Time.
01:23She found fame as a teen star in the 60s, became queen of pop in the 70s, a TV regular
01:33in the 80s and even starred alongside Hugh Jackman in the noughties.
01:42It was the 60s variety show, The Go Show, that brought Johnny Young and Colleen Hewitt
01:47Here he is, Johnny Young.
01:54And now, nearly half a century after they first appeared on our screens, the legends
01:58are teaming up with the evergreen Normie Rowe to tell the stories of their careers.
02:06All right, Johnny Young and Colleen Hewitt joining us live now.
02:11Good times.
02:12Yeah, absolutely.
02:14The brown suit, Johnny, so gorgeous.
02:17It was a good suit, wasn't it?
02:19That was the suit, it was a company called Freeze.
02:22Do you remember the Freeze suits?
02:24No, I don't, John.
02:25It was a particular style.
02:26I'm as old as you.
02:27Oh, thank you, Mama.
02:28The first thing anybody, like a fashion stylist, would ask is, did you keep any of that stuff
02:32or have you still got it?
02:33Do you know what?
02:34I kept the boots.
02:35I still have the 60s boots.
02:36They were shiny, shiny boots, brown boots that went with that suit.
02:41Nice.
02:42I wore them on my very first co-show that I hosted and I kept them as a lucky charm.
02:47Good, good.
02:48You want to freeze, don't you?
02:49Yeah.
02:50Johnny, tell us about when you lived with Roddy Gibb, Barry Gibb, of course, in a non-romantic
02:57sense.
02:58What did that do for your song?
02:59What is she suggesting?
03:00We talked about it.
03:01What everyone has been for years, John.
03:03No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
03:05I have nine grandchildren.
03:07I'm happily married.
03:09The memories of those days.
03:11The Bee Gees had only just left Australia in 1967 and they'd recorded their first hit
03:18in England, New York, Mining Disaster.
03:21I went over to England, like Normie had done before me, to try and make a career there.
03:27The Bee Gees did the backing for me for a song called Grace Finton Kirk and I lived
03:34with Barry and his wife and they always had music in the house.
03:39Barry was always writing songs and so I asked him about songwriting and he said, well, you
03:44know, there are no rules.
03:45You just saw a clip of Russell Morris' hit The Real Thing, which I wrote.
03:49Yeah, great track.
03:50And that came out of that.
03:51You wrote that?
03:52I wrote that, yes.
03:53Oh, man, I didn't know that.
03:54I know.
03:55Yeah, well, you know, a lot of people thought I was on drugs at the time.
03:57They didn't know where it came from.
03:59Hey, Colin, how did you get involved with the Go Show?
04:02Oh, well, for the people that are still around that remember the Go Show, yeah, I was working
04:07in a little band in Bendigo, Victoria and the band was called The Esquires and they
04:11were just sort of sending, I guess the Go Show was sending out scouts looking for singers
04:15and stuff.
04:16And, you know, I came down to Melbourne on the train and I did Always Something There
04:21to Remind Me.
04:22It was a cover of Some Other Girl and then I did it again.
04:25I was the host, by the way.
04:26That's me.
04:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:28I sing the Go Show.
04:29There he is.
04:30Yeah.
04:31I was all innocent then.
04:32God, the rust set in, Megan.
04:34And I've got to tell you.
04:35It's a man's world.
04:36No, that's how it got started.
04:37Yeah.
04:38Thirteen, fourteen year old, I'd already been on Go a couple of times and then it was into
04:42Happening, Uptight, Happening 70 and whatever else after that.
04:46And the thing that always struck us with Colin was that absolutely remarkable voice.
04:51I mean, I know a lot of you would have been watching this morning when Colin and I were
04:55singing a song.
04:57The wonderful thing about Colin is she can act, but the singing voice is wonderful.
05:02You don't have to listen to this.
05:04But it's terrific.
05:05It's all about me.
05:06And she's doing a brand new album which I've heard a couple of tracks of and I know I'm
05:10not allowed to talk about it.
05:11John, you've done that again.
05:13What is wrong with you today?
05:14It's just the most fabulous thing I've ever heard.
05:16Oh, isn't that fantastic?
05:17It's just wonderful.
05:18And so keep an eye out for Colin's new album.
05:20And your show together, give us an idea of what we can expect from that.
05:24Everything.
05:25Everything.
05:26Normie, of course, who's in the middle of recording a documentary series with me, so
05:30he couldn't be here today.
05:31And what's expected is what you do expect.
05:34I'm going to go out and sing all the records I've recorded.
05:36John will have to be the same.
05:37Normie will be doing the same.
05:39And we're three great mates of over 40-something years and we're doing what's natural.
05:44That's fantastic.
05:45And we're travelling all around Australia.
05:47We start in Melbourne on the 14th and 15th of February.
05:50We have all of the details on our Facebook page.
05:53But for the people that don't know how to turn on a computer, like my good self here,
05:58the 14th and 15th of February, the palms at the crown.
06:03Thank you both so much.
06:05Thanks, John.

06:22I've got it.

06:27Tomorrow I'll miss you.
06:30Remember I'll always be true.
06:35Good night, mom. Good night.
06:36Good night.
06:37And then while I'm away, I'll write home every day.
06:43And I'll send all my love to you.
06:47Great.
