00:00Hi friends, today we will learn about parts of a sentence, subject and predicate.
00:11So let's start, sentence.
00:14We know that a sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense.
00:22Part of a sentence.
00:24The two main parts of a sentence are subject and predicate.
00:30Subject.
00:33The part of a sentence that names a person or a thing we are talking about is called
00:40the subject of the sentence.
00:43He is waiting for me outside.
00:46Here, who are we talking about?
00:51We are talking about he.
00:54That is, he is the subject of the sentence.
00:58And the rest of the sentence is talking about the subject, that is, he.
01:07The rest of the sentence that gives information about the subject is called predicate.
01:16We are going to play cricket.
01:19Who or what are we talking about?
01:23We.
01:24The kids are talking about themselves.
01:28So we is the subject here and the rest of the sentence is the predicate.
01:37Tina is sitting on a big chair.
01:42Here we are talking about Tina.
01:46So Tina is the subject of the sentence.
01:52And what is being said about Tina?
01:56We are saying, Tina is sitting on a big chair.
02:01So is sitting on a big chair is the predicate of the sentence.
02:09The monkeys are eating bananas.
02:12They are going to the mall.
02:15We are having a party.
02:18She is looking pretty.
02:21Here the words, the monkeys, they, we, she are subjects of the sentence.
02:31And rest of the sentences are predicates.
02:36Let's revise.
02:38The monkeys, subject, are eating bananas, predicate.
02:44They, subject, are going to the mall, predicate.
02:49We, subject, are having a party, predicate.
02:54She, subject, is looking pretty, predicate.
03:00The subject can be of one word or more than one word.
03:07All the students of the class were absent.
03:11What are we talking about?
03:13We are talking about all the students of the class.
03:18So here the subject is, all the students of the class were absent is the predicate.
03:31The whole team played very well.
03:35What are we talking about?
03:37The whole team.
03:39So the subject of the sentence is the whole team.
03:44Played very well is the predicate as it is giving information about the subject.
03:53The subject need not be always in the beginning of the sentence.
03:59It may also come after the predicate.
04:04Up went the kite.
04:07Here the subject is the kite and the predicate is up went.
04:15The subject can also be hidden in the sentence.
04:20Come here.
04:22It's a complete sentence.
04:24But what's the subject here?
04:27Who are we talking about?
04:29The subject is you.
04:32Here is a hidden subject and it is understood that we are talking to another person.
04:40Go away.
04:43What's the subject here?
04:45Who are we talking about?
04:49Here too it is understood that the subject us, you, as, if someone says go away, he or
04:58she must be saying it to some other person.
05:04Now let's learn one more thing.
05:07The predicate can also be of two types, complete predicate and simple predicate.
05:16The complete predicate of a sentence tells, includes a verb and all other details that
05:23describe what is going on.
05:26This is why it is called complete predicate.
05:29Example, the singer sang her first song.
05:34Here the phrase sang her first song is a complete predicate of the sentence as it tells about
05:42the action that the subject is doing in the sentence.
05:47It includes a verb sang and also tells us that it was the first song of the singer.
05:55So sang her first song is a complete predicate of the sentence.
06:03Simple predicate is also a part of complete predicate.
06:07It includes the main verb that tells what the subject does.
06:12Consider the same sentence, the singer sang her first song.
06:18Here sang is a simple predicate as it includes the main verb as it tells about the action
06:25of singing.
06:28So sang her first song is a complete predicate as it has the verb as well as the details
06:35related to the subject and sang is a simple predicate as it tells us about the verb.
06:45Let's see one more example.
06:49We will go to watch a movie tomorrow.
06:52Here the phrase we'll go to watch a movie tomorrow is a complete predicate as includes
07:00the verb as well as the other details related to the subject and we'll go is a simple predicate
07:09as it only includes the verb.
07:13So kids, today we learned about the parts of a sentence.
07:18Now you may go ahead and take a quiz to learn more.
07:22Bye-bye.
