00:00On Monday afternoon, gale-force winds sent flames bounding through this suburb in Greece,
00:06just 14 kilometres from central Athens.
00:09By Tuesday, some residents had returned to find their land scorched,
00:14cars blackened, houses in ruins and the scale of disaster beginning to sink in.
00:21There's nothing left. There's no morale. No courage.
00:24There's no money anymore. Everything was destroyed.
00:30I've been living here for 35 years and never before had a fire reached this area.
00:34Nearby, flowers lay at the site where a woman's body was recovered.
00:39The Moldovan citizen in her 60s was identified as the first known victim of the fires,
00:44which have been declared Greece's worst this year.
00:47She was found in a factory after residents reportedly tried to help her escape.
00:54There's a balcony. You have to jump off.
00:56She didn't want to leave. She stayed inside.
00:58They yelled at her to come down, but she didn't. She stayed inside.
01:03According to local authorities,
01:05milder winds and the efforts of more than 700 firefighters had helped contain the blaze.
01:10Forty hours after it first broke out, there was no longer an active front,
01:15only scattered hotspots, according to the civil protection minister.
01:20But the risk had not yet abated, with winds expected to pick up again.
01:25Fires are common to Greece summers,
01:26but under climate change they could be exacerbated by more extreme conditions.
01:31Last winter was the country's hottest on record, and the current summer is expected to follow suit.
