00:00The economic facts are clear, because we have the highest debt burden that we've had for over 60 years
00:05and we're having to spend billions and billions of pounds on debt interest to pay that off every month
00:10and because working people have got the highest tax burden since the 1940s,
00:15people at home know, and anyone can look at the statistics,
00:18that what we inherited from the Conservatives was the worst fiscal inheritance since the Second World War
00:22and that means we are very challenged in economic circumstances.
00:25We welcome growth in the economy and growth is our first and most important mission here at the Treasury,
00:30but we've got much, much more work to do to recover from the mess that we were left with.
00:34If you look under the bonnet on the growth figures, you can see, for example,
00:37that professional services, legal services have performed very strongly and that's great.
00:41We want to do more work to support the construction industry and car manufacturing
00:45and that's why a plan such as our industrial strategy is going to be really important
00:48in bringing stability back to the economy, so that we can create stronger growth in the future
00:53and we're very clear that that strong growth is going to be the key path
00:56to sustainable public finances and better public services.
