Their focus turns to Sheffield Wednesday who claimed a thumping 4-0 victory over newly promoted Plymouth Argyle, and moving on to Sheffield United who played out a 4-2 comeback victory when they hosted Wrexham in the EFL Cup. the conversation then moves to Huddersfield Town who claimed all three points in their 2-0 win against Peterborough United to kick off their season.

01:14wobbshaw good morning guys morning hello morning right uh this week we saw the start of the new
01:22campaign for all of our yorkshire teams and these are some of the results from the first week of
01:26fixtures shelby united claimed a winning start to their return to the championship with a 2-0
01:31win over preston north end they'll be featured more later on in the show middlesbrough claimed
01:37all three points in their 1-0 win over swansea city in league one huddersfield town came away
01:43with a 2-0 victory over peterborough united and we will be covering them a little bit more
01:48later on in the program as well rotherham united fell to a frustrating 1-0 defeat at the hands of
01:53exeter city in league two bradford city got their season off to the best possible start with a 2-1
01:59victory over mk dons don casserole was produced a blistering 4-1 victory over acton stanley
02:05and harrogate town fell 2-0 to visiting bromley however let's get things started by looking at
02:12barnsley who fell to a 200 feet when they hosted mansfield town at oakwell um now based on the
02:18performance that barnsley put together especially in the second half do you feel that they'll be
02:24frustrated with the result leon um yeah there were some good aspects of the play um i think
02:31the main thing i took away from it from looking at the teams and the performances of individuals
02:36um luca connell who's obviously he was named as the the new permanent captain uh last week
02:43obviously a big contrast to this time last year wasn't it when he was out with
02:48um with this with this serious and debilitating illness he was he was sat on the couch on the
02:53opening day so great to see him um back on board and being an influential player for barnsley but
02:58he was he played in an unfamiliar role and i thought it really suited him i mean he's
03:03sort of made his name a little bit you know more of a deep line player but with
03:07with matthew craig there and when when clark changed the system and brought
03:12john muslin as well he gave uh connell the license to get forward and he got his goal and
03:18he was almost like a man on the mission really at times especially in the in the second half
03:22he came off later on so clark was faithfully might be cramping up a little bit but lots of
03:29shots on goal and drive and that was the interesting aspect and main takeaway i thought
03:35getting connell further forward and it showed to me that he can be a big offensive player for
03:40the barnsley along with just sort of pulling the strings a little bit further back but yeah i mean
03:45the myself and stewart have seen them towards the tail end of last season and the start of this one
03:52some of the familiar problems remaining in terms of being clinical and ruthless up front and they've
03:58obviously lost um john mccarty who's um obviously went back to looting and has gone to to bold and
04:04i think that's a terrific signing uh for them by the way and um devante cole as well i know he i
04:10know he tried up in the you know the last third of last season but another option with with goals
04:17in his locker at his best so yeah they cosco he put himself about he had a he had a good battle
04:23with aiden flint had a couple of chances and and skied them and max was said a big chance in the
04:28second half so you know it's easy to see where bars his priorities will lie in the remainder of
04:34the window in terms of bringing players in they need i would say they probably need a couple of
04:38forwards to really harden the credentials but you know in terms of it was a rusty start the first
04:4620 minutes i thought mansfield were good they look like a side who got promoted on the bit of
04:51a crest of a wave there were a big big following from mansfield to a club who've got the mojo and
04:59i think it was the first season in the sorry the first game in the in the in the third tier for
05:04about 20 years so yeah it was a good day for them they won the game in the first 20 minutes it was a
05:08good response on from barnsley along with you know seeing seeing connell flower in that advanced
05:17position i think a few ticks as well to daryl clark in that he changed it he went obviously
05:23went in with a three five two he changed it to um it was a bit unlucky on young jen on his debut
05:28he came off and was sacrificed they went to a four and they pulled the goal back and apart
05:34from the result it actually worked i thought barnsley looked better in a four disappointing
05:39not to get obviously your new manager um first game of the season you know in front of the
05:45supporters disappointing not to win but there were some positive aspects in terms of performance
05:51connell especially but you know at least they've got they've got off the board haven't they this
05:56week they they've got through to the second round of the uh efl cup obviously the new signing from
06:03from chelsea he was the hero saving a couple of saves in the penalty shootout by all accounts
06:08bars they should have won it in in 90 minutes but good for clarker wins a win and uh you know
06:15it's lifted it hasn't it going into a tough looking game at lincoln and and to get that
06:20league cup win of course and jewell shefford united at home in the next round put a few more
06:25pounds in the coffer as well which is not to be ignored the price is sensibly it should be a
06:30decent crowd that shouldn't it yeah exactly yeah i think it's frustrating for for all the teams
06:35that we're going to talk about not just bouncy that you have this transfer window on the 30th
06:40of august when teams have four or five games in and you know some teams a lot of teams just
06:46aren't ready for it and you know managers always say they like to get their business done early
06:50but the reality is if you're if you're a club of you know bars these resources you are you are back
06:57in the queue waiting for other people to make to make decisions and other other deals to happen
07:02and of course you know you've got some clubs uh they're lucky for you who think everything's
07:06all sorted and fine and then somebody gets whisked away at the last minute but um yeah for
07:11barnsley as leon's outlined you know they clearly do need a bit more firepower up front um but
07:18hopefully um you know you can do all the work you like in pre-season trying to work things out and
07:26find out things but it's only really in the crucible of competitive football where where
07:31you find things out and yeah hopefully that you know tactical tweak and a few things learned on
07:36the first day stand them in good stead going forward and it's always difficult playing a new
07:41newly promoted team on the first day harrogate found that as well um at home to bromley and
07:47yeah it's it's good that they've they've come away from this first week with with some some
07:54positives to work on and i think for for any team that's that's lost in the opening week or so
08:00obviously it doesn't seem to have applied at preston north end but you you can't overreact
08:05to uh one defeat one one bad result i think forwards are the the ones that everybody wants
08:11to attack i mean you look at huddersfield town they look pretty well catered for but they need
08:17a couple of forwards in it in as well and uh yeah you know it could be that you know at that level
08:22there's a few teams that will find for the similar sort of player so and it is as you rightly say it
08:28is a bit of a game of game of poker and you're sort of really waiting into what happens at the
08:32top aren't you really once they yes get their business crystallized and it'll drop down in
08:36the championship and um clubs know where they're at and then see the the bigger league league one
08:44clubs then then come into play so yeah there's still enough time for barnesley and uh huddersfield
08:49but you know from from our point from our point of view a yorkshire perspective i think they both
08:55need a a couple of a couple of things don't be in the striking front if they're going to harden
08:59that um the resolving what looks a very competitive division this year yes definitely and it is going
09:06to be a really tough division i mean we're talking about last week and they they started with a
09:12defeat there's going to be lots of lots of those results because it is we seem to say every every
09:17season at the moment is a really really tough league one when it comes to that division i think
09:23what you said last week as well i mean you can there's part of judging them after the after the
09:27first international even almost a second really isn't it yeah yeah well i mean you look at the
09:33league tables after the first dozen games really that's when you should have a better example than
09:39barnesley's first day last season you know yeah they didn't have a terrible season but they certainly
09:44didn't keep up the standards of that 7-0 win yeah um you know anything anything can happen
09:50the first few weeks when things are sorting themselves out yeah exactly and next we turn
09:55to hull city who are able to salvage a point in their one-all draw with bristol city thanks to a
10:0091st minute equalizer from oscar estupanon now based on the performance that the tigers put up
10:06what can you boss tim walter take from this game stewart well more than any of our clubs
10:12the whole city are the the biggest work in progress and the and the furthest back in
10:18terms of in terms of their development um not just not just saturday's game but by all accounts
10:24the the league cup tie against sheffield wednesday showed that and you know the team
10:31sheet on the first day really really rammed it home to me i remember on the first day of
10:36uh last premier league season i was at sheffield united and you looked at the team sheet there and
10:41you thought this team is far weaker than the one that was in the championship last season
10:46you look at hill hall cities on saturday they had seven starters who were on the books last
10:52season and couldn't get in the last team of the season either because they've been loaned out
10:57or they were on the fringes or whatever so that shows you there's a lot of work to do i mean
11:02as we talk now we think they're on the verge of making three more signings and i wouldn't be
11:07surprised given their record of making late signings in august under this regime if they
11:13weren't up to strength numbers wise by the end of august the you know the point i made last see
11:19on last week's podcast they're trying to play a very unusual style of play and not someone
11:26not one that someone can arrive on august the 31st and be able to play by august sorry august
11:32the 30th and be able to play by the 31st when they when they play leeds united it's going to
11:37take time on the training ground and i mean even then i'm a bit skeptical as to whether it will
11:43work because they're they're really taking a lot of risks playing the ball out from the back
11:49and you know it's it's it's a it's a style of football that can work there's no style of
11:54football that can't really but it needs high quality players it needs defenders who are good
12:00on the ball and good defenders and let's be frank players with those qualities are going to be in
12:07the premier league yeah you know or at the very best you know in the likes hopefully of the likes
12:13of finley burns they're at a premier league club and they get loaned to hull city to learn the game
12:20you know so there were lots of times again i mean bristol city were were very poor in terms of
12:27capitalizing on the mistakes that hull city made a better team would have put hull to bed before
12:32they got the chance to to to make that stoppage time equalizer because time after time you know
12:37the ball was being played around near hull's corner flags and and just being given away and and i do
12:44worry if the a if this style of football is going to be effective in the championship and b how long
12:50it's going to take to gel together if it is because we all know and we all understand why fans are
12:57impatient and owners are impatient too uh for results in the championship i've already mentioned
13:01preston north end you know yeah walter's gonna need to buy himself a lot of time for this for
13:07this style of play uh to come through so i i do worry about them in in that respect that there
13:13were there were definite positives and they were much better after an hour when valter brought on
13:19two out and out wingers liam miller a player they'd signed earlier that week so that that was
13:24a tick in that box and will jarvis a young lad who they brought back from loan at shelburne so
13:29you know you sort of saw both sides of how a club could improve themselves in the summer window so
13:34all's not lost but it's going it's going to test the patience and i do worry uh if the manage
13:41if the manager is going to get the time to to see this job through because it's a big job he's
13:46trying to pull off because another problem that he's got is that if he continues with this style
13:53of play for long enough all the opposition are going to suss that out the team and then he's
13:59going to have to read rejig his whole system which means he's going to have to um have the players
14:05bond to that playing style again and who knows how that's going to well i mean it is defense
14:12most people know how manchester city are going to play but they can't stop it the point is you've
14:16got to be very good at that style of play or you've got to be flexible i think it's something the
14:21owners obviously that's what he wants isn't it really that's yeah that's what's drawn him
14:25drawn into to getting valves winning in the first place this whatever they call it heart attack
14:30type football but it's it's very idealistic it's very bold if it if it comes off all credit to
14:37them but the championship is it's a it's a pragmatic hard um division you know we we talk
14:44about it being early season this and that one thing early but the the little you know the part
14:49of my uh the cynical i ten i looks at that game against plymouth and even though it's just the
14:54second game of the season it looks it looks a big game for both sides you know and i actually
15:01it's i did the climac hall game at the end of last season so um climac's first whole game at
15:07homely game of the new season against hall that's how it works sometimes so you know
15:11all of i think there's about six or seven players who were in that lineup um when they were
15:15obviously i still had a little bit of a sniff at the playoff they've gone and obviously the
15:20climac got a got a good hiding at sheffield wednesday hall you know very much a work in
15:26progress i just think psychologically even though it's it is very early season you don't want to
15:31lose that game do you the lose you've got it you've got a free well you've got a clear run to
15:36the next game but there's going to be a lot of noise if there is a loser in that game even though
15:42we're two games in so yeah obviously hold the whole it's the same that they can it's not going
15:48going to be them but uh yeah i've just i just think it's even though it's so early in the season
15:54it's it's a key game for hall and the and the opponents on saturday yeah i mean it's ridiculous
15:59but it's the way it is you can feel in the press room at hillsborough the pressure that way maroon
16:03he was under yeah one game one competitive game as manager and let's be honest it's because he's
16:08what it's way he's way rooney but yeah whether you agree with it or you don't agree with it
16:13as leon says it's pragmatism is reality this is what it is and you know if you're if you're a team
16:20that just missed out on the playoffs last season you don't want to be giving other teams a month
16:25six weeks two months heads up it is it's a daft it's a it's a daft strong and it's an unforgiving
16:31division isn't it and there's obviously not as much focus on on the championship as the
16:37premier league but it's still a pretty high profile division with with teams and high profile
16:43individuals so um yeah that you know he obviously won't be both of the game on on saturday but it'll
16:50be it'll be an interesting one to sort of observe what what happens there but you know as leon says
16:56it will be brilliant to watch if it works so fingers crossed fingers crossed that it does
17:00and i say it is what it is what the chairman is working towards but as leon says i think
17:05there's idealism and there's reality and you've just got to balance the two a bit more delicately
17:09than they are doing so far i think it's one of those is just quickly they could go there to
17:13plymouth play them off the park yeah multiball could you know it could look sensational they
17:18could win three or four nil but equally they could get spanked three or four nil so that's
17:24really football and i think that's the beauty of this particular game it's just one that
17:28i don't know about you i just can't call this one no and i think there'll be a lot of games
17:33like that for us this year in the coming weeks won't there where we could see we could see a few
17:37big wins when things click and a few big beatings as well so yeah buckle up yeah and now let's turn
17:44to leeds united who played out a dramatic three-all draw with portsmouth when brendan aronson scored
17:49a 95th minute equalizer he had the chance to secure all three points in the dying moments
17:54of the match however he saw his shot go agonizingly wide um this was then followed up by a three nil
18:00defeat at the hands of middlesbrough which saw them exit the efl cup now what can we all take
18:06from that entertaining draw and the league cup game ahead of their game against west Bromwich
18:09albion leon it's been a worrying start to the to the season i mean obviously stewart did the game
18:16on on on wednesday i sort of watched it a little bit from far and uh i wasn't the middlesbrough
18:24winning wasn't that big of a as a surprise i did the two games last season and they were pretty
18:28unlucky in both of those games they pushed leads all the way and two brilliant football matches
18:33first of all they lost 3-2 at ellen road and then there was the thriller at the riverside
18:39for free so it wasn't necessarily that surprising that that borough won maybe they were perhaps due
18:44one but just so worrying from a from a league perspective you know it's early in the season
18:48they just look like they've got issues all over the place you know defensively you know six because
18:54there's six goals in two two home games you know some of the big players from last season rode on
19:00he looked he looked off colour and um you know i don't think they conceded three home home league
19:06goals in a in a league game at ellen road all season that got trashed on the first on the first
19:11day against paul paul's so for a manager who just likes to you know you look at parker he likes his
19:18chest pieces all being in certain positions and he likes to control the game and you know two games
19:23where there's just been a lot a lot of disorder a lot of disorder and they just looked so incoherent
19:28defensively and they just looked like they went to pieces in in the second half and obviously
19:32factoring the news about um gino rutter as well it was just one of those horrible days that i'm
19:38afraid you do sporadically get from time to time with leeds united you know regardless of manager
19:45regardless of of um ownership as well just a horrible day yeah the worry for me is it just
19:52looked like they're they're sort of regressing a little bit obviously lost a couple of players
19:57a couple of huge players probably going to lose another one in rutter as well they've got pro
20:02look like they've got problems in midfield certainly defensively some of the performances
20:07of one or two of the players were um were frankly a disgrace i thought i'm not going to go into names
20:13but two or three of those those players should uh you know there should be a shame with that
20:17performance particularly in the second half and you sort of looked at middles but they looked at
20:21a side who were progressing on the move um capable of having a a really um bright and encouraging
20:31season and he's just not so sure with leads at the minute they desperately need some if lots of
20:35us to go they desperately need some some frontline top players and even though it's early in the
20:40season you sort of think this final few weeks of the window could have a huge bearing on how
20:46the season goes i mean if rutter goes they've got money they'll need about three or four serious
20:51players you know to um to to really sort of give themselves a chance of automatic promotion this
21:00year so yeah it's it's such a huge time for leads and to the end of the window i think they've got
21:06to get serious and get with it because if you know if they have a they've had a difficult window
21:13so far if it ends in a similar fashion you're sort of really worried for them a bit and the
21:18pressure will start to crank up on on daniel farker you know he's done some admirable work
21:23there but they've got some you know some tough examinations coming up before the end of the month
21:29we hope for his sake they can pull out a result of two obviously got west brom they've got a
21:34very hard-looking game at hillsborough as well so yeah they it's been a worrying uh first week
21:41of the season for leeds united and um and uh the pressure is ramping up a little yeah i mean it was
21:48it was a let's say an interesting exercise watching a game on on wednesday having read leon's match
21:53report on saturday because that that report of leon's signposted everything that happened
21:59in in the game you know even with it even with a much changed team exactly the same issues you
22:06know and and when things were bad last season you could rely on at least they won't concede
22:11goals you know at least they're rock solid defensively at least they've got your road on
22:14one of the best defenders in the league you know as as leon says he's not played like that in the
22:19first couple of games only a couple of games same caveat as everyone else um but yeah the difference
22:23obviously between the portsmouth and the middlesbrough game was the quality of middlesbrough
22:28i mean we you know we we mustn't underplay that middlesbrough played really well you know
22:35kept their composure in the first half when leads had had more of the ball really effective and
22:40incisive on the counter-attack and and they look like the sort of standard that that lead should
22:45be aiming for um you know that looks like they're close to signing another striker there they're
22:51getting stronger at a time when when leads need to be and and frankly aren't right now and you know
22:58the demoralizing thing from elise point of view is that you know we kicked off the summer i'm
23:02gonna be talking to paramount the chairman at the start of the summer and it was all about
23:08um we gave everyone a head start uh last summer we're not going to do this this time all our
23:14ducks are in a row you know we're gonna we're gonna hit the ground running um you know obviously
23:20the player final helped things up but relative to last season nowhere near even you know actually
23:26great was obviously a huge psychological blow a huge footballing blow but even the fact that
23:30that was done early you know things were clear you know the financial fair play thing was basically
23:36sorted out and they were ready to move forward and they as leon says they've actually moved
23:41backwards so far um the fact that they did give give everyone a head start last season
23:46and catch it up is a straw to cling to but um you know just falling short this season won't
23:55won't wash you know and and the i i think i think wrongly but you know the manager is
24:03under real scrutiny from from sections of the fan base now um the mid to me the midfield looks
24:12the dynamic of the midfield doesn't look to have changed um joe rothwell looks a good player in
24:17that in that game against middlesbrough you know he's done well in the championship in the past
24:21but he doesn't look that different to ilia grove in terms of the way he plays the game
24:25i think they need they need someone more to break the lines and you know they need something at
24:30center forward and as as as as leon's alluded to it looks like they've got a few winners they're
24:35going to need to replace as well so you know there should be there'll be money in the bank to do it
24:39but not much time and a lot of pressure on them and that suddenly makes you know again we're saying
24:45it again that suddenly makes that west brom game you know a really big game carlos cobran for all
24:50the problems that west and west brom have had carlos cobran looming around the corner ready to
24:55you know ready to cause pro problems for his old club um it's it's a tough time for them um and
25:02it's uh yeah they need to they need to make some signings in the next couple of weeks that are not
25:08just good signings but signings that really give some optimism to the league to find you know
25:14obviously good signings rather than some signings that sort of you only realize down the line
25:20yeah they don't need uh with respect they don't need stocking fillers do they which
25:24no you know in a way no disrespect to rothwell he's sort of one of those really is that you
25:29know i mean they lose somerville they've lost uh gray you know russians well that's the three not
25:34three best players in the least in the whole division you've got to replace to give yourself
25:39a chance of going one better to see you they've got to be replaced with with with that sort of
25:47right caliber of quality but you know that's not easy i think i think the thing that's maybe stick
25:52to be farker with as well is that the way they tailed off last season as well i mean you think
25:58obviously the the game the second leg against norwich was a bit of an outlier wasn't it i mean
26:04you know they hammered them and played played pretty well but you know form going into the
26:08end of the season was was pretty poor wasn't it really it must i'd imagine what two wins in about
26:1310 or 11 it must be something in in that so yeah the the patience of lead supporters is starting to
26:21starting to wear a little and um yeah they're gonna have to dig out a result or two from
26:26someone before the end of the month and just as critically probably even more important is what
26:31they do um in the window they need some they need some serious big big hitters coming in to uh
26:38to sort of calm everything down and um and help farker as well because um now in a worry i mean
26:44leeds did make don't get me wrong leeds made changes against middlesbrough but so did middlesbrough i
26:47think what there was lee's made about eight changes and i think borough made about it was about the
26:52same so yeah they were playing the middles beside they didn't have lati last starting there was
26:58people like mccree didn't start and and as as vanderburg so they mixed it up as well and even
27:05with portsmouth as well portsmouth only had one recognized centre half they had about
27:10eight or nine out as well so that was um a worrying aspect as well so yeah some some
27:15big football matches for leeds in the next week or two yeah don't get me wrong there's definitely
27:20valid scrutiny you know valid questions to be asked of daniel farcroft just not not yet personally
27:26reached the conclusion that it is i agree with you yeah yeah yeah he needs some help doesn't
27:33he does yeah that's the uh that's the bottom line yeah and next our focus turns to shuffle
27:39wednesday who claimed a thumping four nil victory over newly promoted plymouth argyle
27:44the owls seemed to make their presence known early on having dominated the first half before scoring
27:48their first goal 10 minutes before the break and they never really looked like stopping as the
27:53match went on um what was your assessment of the match and could we see a similar performance in
27:58their game against sunderland stewart um my assessment is that sheffield wednesday were
28:04excellent but as we've already touched on plymouth weren't you know and much the same as as sheffield
28:11united beating preston it'll probably take a couple of games just to put things in context
28:16and work out how much of that was sheffield wednesday's excellence how much was plymouth
28:21ineptitude from a plymouth perspective as well as the sheffield wednesday one sheffield wednesday
28:25followed it up with a much changed team against holland by all accounts played very well then
28:29but you know sunderland and leeds on the horizon that's a different level of uh test for them you
28:36know for all the problems we've talked about with leeds it still leads it's still a yorkshire derby
28:42that brings its pressures you know regardless of of how the opposition are faring and i i think
28:47i'll be at the stadium of lights on sunday and i'll be really interested to see how they fare
28:51and i'm really looking forward to it because the quality of the football they played
28:55um against plymouth was excellent um some of the signings they made they've made over the summer
29:01inglesom was was brilliant in midfield uh playing central midfield helping overloads on the right
29:08um they look to have made some really shrewd signings uh you know fullbacks as well were
29:13very good and they just they just look like a team that have had it i've done a lot of good
29:19work in pre-season and it was paying off you know it was it was really exciting to watch
29:24helping was really bouncing you know the fans were as you would be watching football like that
29:30you know really behind it really excited by it i'm really i'm really looking forward to seeing
29:36how sheffield wednesday developed this season but in the same way as we've said about the teams that
29:41lose it applies equally to the teams that won you know you don't win the league on the back of one
29:46good game two good games but for the likes of sheffield wednesday and for huddersfield it's
29:50great that they've got up to the start to have don castor as well but you know it's it's a long
29:56slog um there's a lot still to be achieved and as i say i think after some london leads i think
30:02we'll have a better idea of just how good chef the wednesday were on the opening day of the season
30:08yeah yeah i mean i'd echo all that i think it is um obviously very early days but you know you
30:14look at the you know the psychology of it the start of last season i did sheffield wednesday's
30:19first um two home games sorry first two games on the moon as they they were well beaten against
30:27southampton i mean it was a tough first game that said they were well they were well beaten
30:31by southampton and then they they went to hull um in the league and lost 4-2 and i think i must
30:37mention something in my match report where it wasn't necessarily the fact that lost the first
30:41two games but you just didn't see any style you saw no coherence you saw no idea of what
30:47munos was all about his teams um his football and ethos and you sort of fast forward it um 12 months
30:54now you know everything about um you know danny rolled his his teams are very well well organized
31:01in terms of the precedent structure that it looks at a coherence about them and an excitement as
31:07well and i think what i would say as well you know the benefits of bringing players in the early
31:13part of of um the window you can't you can't sort of discount the importance in that you know you
31:21will get a lot of team not just in in the championship efl but premier league as well
31:25there'll be that that mad scramble around you'll have you'll have the gym white with his tie on
31:30on the on deadline day everyone getting excited news reports everywhere which you know the football
31:37finding people do lap up but i think the serious operators and managers which which
31:42ron certainly is you know he much much prefers to get them in get them assimilated
31:48not just into it how that what he wants from them get them assimilated into the club as well so
31:53i think that's probably part of it at sheffield wednesday they got a few players on board
31:57pretty early and he's and he's worked with him for a decent amount of of time already
32:03you know it's very sensible isn't it but it's common sense isn't it really as well so i think
32:08the benefit from that obviously the the excellent work that he did last season the way to finish
32:14the season so yeah he's got a book just a week in the season it's very early days but
32:20extremely encouraging for wednesday and uh and the supporters given where they were you know this time
32:27you know this time 12 months ago i think the narrative already was well as long as we stay up
32:32and you know get 50 points and um he's definitely raised the bar a bit since
32:38and one one person who has has had and deserved a lot of criticism for years now is the chairman
32:46deserves huge credit for the fact for facilitating the things that that leon's talked about you know
32:51obviously danny roll's driven it but it's needed it's needed somebody to actually sign the checks
32:56and do the work that needs doing so um i say he's had more than his fair share of criticism but he
33:02definitely deserves praise for for uh this good start to the season and i think they've done
33:06quickly a lot of work behind the scenes haven't they by all accounts the training ground getting
33:11things in order this time and the other and i think that's that's important as well as
33:16signings really yeah yeah and let's now turn to shuffled united who played out a 4-2 comeback
33:23victory when they hosted rexham in the fl cup however before that the blades started their
33:28league campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over preston north end now what can chris wilder
33:33take from those two performances so far stewart i think things are starting to come together quite
33:39courageously for sheffield united um you know even even a couple of weeks well you know i covered
33:44them at huddersfield in their final pre-season game and you know i wrote at the time they just
33:49didn't look ready at all they were so light on numbers you know blah blah blah but you know
33:54there's been a real impetus in the transfer market the last couple of weeks harry suitor alfred
34:00gilchrist michael cooper um i'm i'm missing i'm missing some there um yeah this this influx of
34:09influx of the players they needed you know a week or two later than they needed them as leon said
34:14you want them in for pre-season but nevertheless they're coming um that rexham game was encouraging
34:20because again lots of changes but cpec in particular but all the players really um really
34:26showed that they can be they can be valuable members of this squad um you know cooper was in
34:32the stands as was the uh young crystal palace winger who at the time we're speaking now hasn't
34:37signed but we're fully expecting him to sign on loan so so pieces of pieces are falling into place
34:43as i alluded to earlier um you know it'll probably take a bit of time to to sort of weigh up just how
34:51much that preston game was taking tweaks from a baby but nevertheless there was a real cohesion
34:56to the way sheffield united played um it looked a good performance i said followed up against rexham
35:03with a performance that you know it was almost the best you'll get from young players in the
35:10sense that they scored four goals they played really well because he did a couple of naive
35:15goals but that that's part of the deal when you when you've got a young team you can you can
35:19certainly accept that against a you know a rexham team who had a few miles on the clock and are in
35:26it in a good way at the moment so yeah it it feels like things things are turning in the right
35:32direction for sheffield united again for you know one week blah blah blah but um the mood is lifted
35:40you know and and a lot of what we're talking about at the moment is the mood around these
35:44these clubs positive or negative and it does feel to be uh turning in the right direction at last
35:50for sheffield united yeah yeah i totally agree i mean it looks looks encouraging doesn't it was a
35:56you know especially the first half of the summer in the window you know the constant backdrop was
36:01all the talk about the takeover uncertainty and um everything seemed to be in a bit of
36:06bit of limbo but you know in a pretty reasonably short space of time they've obviously got the
36:12green light for some deals and you know some of the quite a lot of the transfers are they look
36:17good ones for this level don't they i think we mentioned sweden the calamo hairs of this world
36:22that harry suiters uh michael coop has done well at um at uh plymouth keith keith for more you know
36:29they look players who wants to assimilate it and they could make an impact at this level and
36:33hopefully at the at the top end of the of the table so yeah a good start for sheffield united
36:38they really they need you sense they really needed it for everyone connected with the club
36:42the manager the players the staff especially the supporters so you've got a home game against um
36:49qpr on saturday and um yeah they can finish it a pretty good start to the season with an uplift
36:55in result performance in front of a of a big uh a crowd at bramall lane that'll be another
37:03um one to tick off and um and cause for optimism and adding to a bit of a feel-good factor and you
37:10know probably doing some more work as well i dare say before the end of the window because
37:15they'll probably need to they're still yeah you know you look at them and their their first 11
37:20is probably as it you know it stand up against probably anybody's in the division but when you
37:26and you look at it at the bench you know that's at some point in the season that you know with
37:31the injury suspensions thing you know the hard slog that's where your squad comes into play and
37:36i know you did the was it the huddersfield friendly steward yeah you know the names on
37:40the bed it just proved how how thin they were so there's got to be some um things to to address
37:48there but i think in a pretty short space of time he's he's starting to uh to turn things
37:55chris wilder but you know let's hope they can finish up with a victory on saturday yeah i mean
37:59the job's certainly not done in the transfer market now they do need more particularly up
38:03front um you know they've added a comment from miss tyree's campbell off the list but yes yeah
38:08they've added him he'll obviously bring something but you always worry about free agent sign late
38:14in the window about how their pre-season has been yeah you know we know unfortunately for
38:19in person it's been a really difficult time with the death of his father don't know why in part
38:22that's how they just need more bodies uh they just need more bodies up front um and and in
38:28other positions as well but when the when the feeling's good around the place it's that much
38:33easier to attract those players in the last weeks of the season and that's the key for them yeah
38:39the balance looks good quickly doesn't it i mean they've got the r blasters and brooks they've got
38:42some really promising top class kids and the other academy they're producing some damn good
38:47players they're over years at sheffield united but they've got that seems to have got that hard
38:51and championship you know edges well in that you know the likes of of more and you know oh hair so
38:58people like that so it looks a decent um balance but still a fair bit to do as well
39:04our focus now shifts to huddersfield town who claimed all three points in their 2-0 win against
39:09peterborough united to kick off their season which was then followed up by completing a convincing
39:153-0 victory over morcum in the efl cup now what were some of the points that stood out for you
39:20in the terriers performances leon yeah well i mean the result and um performance wise pretty
39:27picture perfect really especially for a you know a team that had been relegated and
39:32it had a miserable end well it was a miserable season all told but particularly the end to
39:37the season when you know there was not just talk of bad performances but there was talk of it being
39:42a an unhappy ship and players being divisive so duff's had all that to contend with all that sort
39:48of background noise you know in terms of getting things together getting huddersfield you know
39:55ship shape prepared um for the new season so yeah he'll he'll be he'll be he'll be pretty happy he's
40:01not the one who'll be jumping through hoops and giving everybody high fives he's only interested
40:05in what's happening next you know he made a point of that after the after the uh the victory over
40:11morcum but i think that the big thing for me is that you know already he's got some he's got some
40:16decisions there hasn't he really the he meant he made quite a lot of changes from the peterborough
40:21game you know an excellent um uh win there and and clean sheet now give the chance you know herbie
40:28kane got a got a got a start various others as well the young lad from west ham marshall who's
40:35coming on the season long loan he got his first start danny ward as well so you know already
40:40people are pushing each other there you know obviously kane was didn't start the first league
40:47game but you know he's pushing ward's pushing um marshall jaheim headley was was excellent as well
40:55so there's some there's some good battles there they're already and um you know everybody's you
41:01know the players have spoken well about the input of michael duff in getting everybody um together
41:06and he's there's no mixed messages there so yeah good starts the season all the field i think you
41:12know duff's made no secret the fact that he still wants to get a strike of a two and uh but yeah it
41:18was pretty much chef united a little bit of expectation already after a difficult um campaign
41:24pretty much the same at huddersfield now and they they've got two home games they've got
41:28stevenage on saturday and and i think it is it shrewsbury the week after so they'll be um
41:35interesting in testing themselves i mean that i dare say both of those sides you know they'll
41:41probably be inspired and go to the john smith stadium they'll it'll be a low block they'll
41:44pack they'll be packed at the defence and they'll say break us down and that's that's going to be
41:50the task for huddersfield they found it quite hard for for much of that um last season in that
41:56regard but uh yeah the fans will turn up that obviously been it wasn't a particularly big
42:00crowd in the week but there's plenty of positive noises from from the um the cup feature against
42:06morcambe even though they weren't the best opponents morcambe but huddersfield did a pretty
42:11good job and they scored a couple of cracking goals to uh to boot so yeah a bit like sheffield
42:17united can they finish off a pretty positive week in the right fashion yeah i think i think
42:24huddersfield probably haven't done as much transfer business as you might expect for a
42:28relegated team you know probably probably still a bit still to do but i think they're getting the
42:34benefit of what leon referred to with regards to sheffield wednesday they look like time's been
42:39well spent on the training grounds and you know michael duff is is is the sort of character who
42:46who just likes that contact with players and has some very clear ideas and it's it's quite clear in
42:51getting them across and uh yeah it's it seems like they're they're a team that know where they're
42:57going you know and it's gonna as we've already said it's going to be a really tough league one
43:03but at least if you if you know what you are and how you're going to go about it that that is a
43:09head start on some clubs at this stage yeah yeah i think two clean sheets especially the i saw quite
43:16a bit of the game of peterborough and they didn't really conceive much at all in terms of chances
43:21it looked really solid and in his time at barnes they were excellent away from home defensively
43:27weren't they and they had an absolutely formidable record so early days but the portents look well
43:32in that regard you just hope that it can touch wood it can keep that backline together you know
43:38it's the people like hella you only feed my attract interest spencer as well so as much as
43:43puttersfield they do need at least one striker and then kill another big tick in the box as if
43:49they can keep you know the likes of of helic and spencer by the time that the window shuts
43:54that'll be pretty significant as well and and lee nichols as well because he's yes he's a he's a very
44:00good goalkeeper yeah yeah and uh finally for this week i will turn to stewart for his first team of
44:06the week this season before looking to leon for his player player of the week so stewart which
44:12team stood out for you this week um well i've already praised chef here wednesday to high heaven
44:16so i think it's probably only fair that i look at don castor over instead um excellent excellent
44:23start to the season for them they're another club it just feels really positive you know while some
44:28clubs have had overhauls they've recognized they just need to do a bit of tinkering um
44:34look well you know again look well drilled look like they all understand what each other's doing
44:40lost a few you know lost a big player in in in matthew craig going back from his loan but
44:45recruited some really good ones um lots of good attacking options lots of good organization
44:52uh and now um a league trip to uh to goodison park to look forward to so i think i think things
44:58are really really positive uh but don castor should also mention bradford a great win for
45:05them at milton keynes don's and to to do it inside the first five minutes for a team that
45:10has really struggled for or really did struggle for early goals last season our colleague simon
45:15parker was pointing out um it's been a good start for them but but yes uh i think uh i think don
45:22my team this week okay and uh leon yeah quite a quite a few um candidates you look around
45:31obviously sheffield wednesday um stewart soar engelson and by all accounts he looks he looks
45:35a terrific buy already and he really fitted in straight away so that's i think that's the
45:39wetted the appetite of wednesday i was in particular ollie r blaster he's had a obviously
45:44it's been a rough rough sort of last season for sheffield united in getting relegated but
45:50you know he's had a real year to save hasn't he's you know he's ticked off all sorts of
45:53milestones and uh so he'd lead in the sight of victory in the opening game at preston
45:58and scoring a goal he's going to be a big big player for the sheffield united i think
46:02suzer as well he took a bit of a bit of stick last season and by all accounts he was he was
46:07excellent as well at um at deepdale so they're probably worthy of a mention aiden morris at
46:13middlesbrough he played well at leeds on wednesday night in the cup and he was he was pretty good in
46:19his opener against swansea obviously coming decent transfer fee u.s international he's
46:24made a good start and uh lassie sorensen as well there's been a few at um
46:30buttersfield to start the season well he started both games and he looks a real
46:35crowd favorite already he was involved in two of the goals against against morcambe and you know
46:40he's a real road runner gets up and down the pitch and loves to tackle high energy and he really
46:46looks like he'll he'll be a crowd favorite but and stewart's told me thunder a little bit with
46:51don castor rose he did that he did that a few times last season it's in my little black book
46:57and i i didn't i didn't mention any players deliberately no no if you team me up then i'll
47:04let you off i've got to say you've got to say look mollen you haven't i mean he was he signed his
47:08his um new deal in the summer that was obviously interesting him ended the season you know like
47:14a train scored some some cracking eye-catching goals so he's um he's carried on where he's left
47:19off really hasn't he obviously he's scored in both the games already this season showed that
47:25he can be a you know a hell of a force for for don castor this season and um yeah i mean i think
47:32they you know they obviously had that bitter disappointment against crew on penalties but
47:37just important there wasn't any any hangover there shouldn't have been really because what
47:40they did at the end of that season was was bonkers wasn't it winning was he 10 and 11
47:44games on the track and uh now they've kicked off with another two so i'm gonna say luke
47:51it's just nice that it's such a difficult uh difficult time yes yes yeah there was probably
47:57others as well yeah well you know a couple of big milestones with billy sharpe's 253 goal and
48:02you know emmanuel latila um equally a goal from the ground close anyone who does that that's
48:07pretty special yeah well you could go on for ages with with play of the week which is fantastic
48:12to say now but you're right it's just right to say i mean it has been you know a bit of
48:18a bit of drama with lees but all i think all i wanted to all things in the round it's been a
48:23it's been a fair old star hasn't it yeah yeah yorkshirepost.co.uk
