A-Level results day at Sheffield's Tapton School
Transcript
00:00Mrs Rhodes, Headteacher here at Tapton School, we're here for A-Level Results Day, what kind of day have we had so far?
00:04It's been a fantastic day, lots to celebrate, the students have worked so hard for this and we're really proud of everything they've achieved.
00:11I saw a lot of smiley faces today, I'm seeing 64% A or A star...
00:16A star to B, yes.
00:17A star to B, excuse me, that's a very high turnout, how does that feel especially?
00:21Yeah, yeah, that's great, I mean it's the culmination of a lot of hard work that the students and the staff have put in, so yeah, brilliant.
00:27Can you talk to people at home about maybe, it's been a very challenging couple of years for students and young people in the UK I suppose,
00:34how did that impact here I suppose, like what did you feel seeing that all happen over the past five years with the pandemic and trying to come back to normal as they call it?
00:42Yeah, I think that's it, it's that gradually things are getting back to normal now and in terms of the choices that lay before our students,
00:50they've now got to make the right choices for them and you know, put the plans into place that they've worked really hard towards.
00:57So sometimes they don't always get the exact grades that they want and they need to take that chance to kind of seize the moment and think,
01:04I'll go for this course because there's so many great courses out there available and it's just getting them to navigate that and understand it.
01:12We've got a handful of Oxbridge candidates getting through successfully, we've got a few people starting medicine as well, so that's really high flying for Sheffield.
01:19Is there anything you'd like to say to your students today?
01:21Yeah, I would say just how proud we are of them, they know how hard they've worked for this and they know how pleased we are with what they've achieved, well done.
01:32Imogen, you've just got your results for today, how did it go?
01:35It went well, I got BBC, two marks of B in Maths and I did Maths, Geography and Music.
01:42Does that send you for whatever university you want to get into, where do you think you're going to go next?
01:47I did get into Lancaster Uni but I've got a degree apprenticeship to do in Somerset in Environmental Science.
01:53There's a lot of options, are you going to do one then the other or is it all just a plan from here on out?
01:57Yeah, I'm going to do the apprenticeship and withdraw from Lancaster.
02:01That's all the options in the world, that's fantastic.
02:04I don't suppose you can speak to what it's been like, can you tell people at home what it's been like these past five years?
02:08There was a pandemic in the way, we had to quote unquote return to normal, I don't know how the challenges have been, what was your school experience really?
02:16It's been tough, I didn't come here originally, I went to Newfield, I got 7s and 8s at GCSE even with Covid in itself so that was quite an achievement.
02:27I obviously came here and they've been amazing, really supportive in the transition but it has been difficult to know how we were going to do because the grade values keep changing and they're always shifting to try and make it back to normal.
02:45They just keep saying it's the return to normal but you never got the chance to experience what that was like in some ways I suppose.
02:51What was the mood like amongst other people I suppose, people in a year you'd have to have talked about it with one another saying this is a rotten job we've been given.
02:57What was it like as far as the mood amongst students?
03:00No one liked it really because it's always been difficult to shift because every year of these exams has been different for different people and people have had different experiences and it's been a real challenge.
03:15Enough of that, what are you going to do to celebrate?
03:18I'm going to have a takeaway tonight, watch a movie and just have a good time.
03:24That's as much as I can think of, that's lovely.
