00:00Hi, my name is Jack Marshall, I'm a senior reporter with Lancashire Post and the Blackpool
00:05Gazette and I'm just bringing you some breaking news today, which is that a Lancashire police
00:09officer has been hospitalised after being assaulted with a brick whilst arresting a
00:15man in Blackpool. Now, police have confirmed to us that following an investigation into
00:21a string of robberies in Blackpool involving the use of weapons, Lancashire police were
00:26on the scene in Chesterfield Road in the town to arrest two men yesterday evening, so that's
00:31the evening of August the 16th at around 7.30pm and it was while they were carrying out these
00:37arrests that one of the men struck an officer with a brick on Chesterfield Road, leaving
00:43him with a significant head injury which did require hospital treatment. Now, we initially
00:49received reports yesterday evening of an event going on on Chesterfield Road and there was
00:54a huge police presence, numerous police vehicles and emergency ambulances also on the scene
00:58and we did have someone, an eyewitness, to the whole scene, not to the incident itself
01:03but to the whole scene who said that something serious had obviously happened and we're now
01:08getting more information which is obviously that a police officer has been assaulted.
01:12Off the back of this, a 30-year-old man of no fixed abode has been arrested on suspicion
01:18of robbery, assault causing grievous bodily harm and for prison recall, while a second
01:24man, a 37-year-old from Preston was also arrested at the scene on suspicion of robbery. Both
01:31men are currently in custody according to the police. Assistant Chief Constable Karen
01:36Edwards has said, whilst working hard to keep Lancashire's communities safe, one of our
01:41officers has been assaulted resulting in a significant head injury. Assaulting police
01:46officers is completely unacceptable and again shows the dangers that officers face every
01:51single day. She went on to say, assaults on my officers will not be tolerated. I am pleased
01:57to see they have both been arrested and are now in our police cells where they can cause
02:02no harm to our communities. The offences will be fully investigated and he will face the
02:06courts in due course. Any more information we get on this story, we will of course keep
02:11you updated but there's been a lot of online chatter and a lot of requests for information
02:16about an incident which kind of blew up last night like we say on Chesterfield Road in
02:20Blackpool and we can now inform everyone that a police officer has been assaulted with a
02:23brick during an arrest. Two men are now in custody. More information as we get it from
02:29the police but yeah, thank you for watching.
