00:00Welcome to Watch Mojo Español, I am Jackie and today we will show you our top 20 of the most boring movie sequels that failed to capitalize on the success of its predecessor.
00:1920. Batman and Robin
00:28To be honest, things were starting to look bad since Batman Forever.
00:33Although it generated a lot of money, the change of tone from dark to colorful and comical was harshly criticized.
00:41And then came Batman and Robin.
00:50Now being one of the biggest internet jokes, this movie is a disaster from start to finish.
00:56It was even worse than Batman Forever and raised much less, with a gross total of only 238 million dollars.
01:05Analysts agreed that the movie probably reached the point of balance, with a budget between 125 and 160 million dollars.
01:16But balancing is not what Warner Bros. wanted, and Batman and Robin effectively ended the franchise.
01:23It resumed 8 years later with Batman Begins by Christopher Nolan.
01:3619. The Chronicles of Riddick
01:39To be honest, we have no idea what Universal was thinking here.
01:47Pitch Black was a pretty standard horror movie about characters who escaped from monsters while a rebellious antihero protected them from danger.
01:57This antihero was such a popular character that they decided to give it its own story,
02:02only that they changed the genre of horror to science fiction at a large budget,
02:07and took the series and the character in a more fanciful direction.
02:11This was not what the fans of Pitch Black expected.
02:17With a budget of about 105 million dollars, the film raised only 57 million dollars in the national markets,
02:28and 115 million dollars worldwide.
02:31And that was not what the studio expected, it was to be expected.
02:3518. Look Who's Talking Now
02:39The first Look Who's Talking was a great success in 1989,
02:43raising almost 40 times its budget of 7.5 million dollars and with a gross total of 297 million dollars.
02:53It is understandable that this will launch a franchise that experienced decreasing performance.
03:09The second movie, ingeniously titled Look Who's Talking, also raised 121 million dollars,
03:17and the third movie, Look Who's Talking Now, was a disaster.
03:21It has a 0% percentage in Rotten Tomatoes and raised an abysmal 10 million dollars,
03:29less than what the previous movie got on its first weekend.
03:34The blame fell everywhere.
03:36Some attributed their failure to The Night Before Christmas, which dominated the box office,
03:42others pointed to the quality of the film.
03:45Whatever the case, it was a shame forever.
03:5217. The Whole Ten Yards
03:58Its predecessor, The Whole Nine Yards, raised 106 million dollars with a budget of 41 million dollars.
04:06What was to be done next?
04:08The Whole Ten Yards, of course.
04:12I'll call you to tell you where we're going to make the exchange with Cynthia.
04:15Get your knuckleheads here, follow this car, start throwing out body parts.
04:19Feet first.
04:20The budget was practically the same, reaching only a million dollars less than the previous one,
04:26but it earned much less.
04:28It opened during Easter weekend, which should have given it a good boost,
04:33but the harsh criticism damaged its possibilities and raised a disappointing 7.4 million dollars.
04:40Remaining ninth behind Ella Enchanted.
04:43It raised only 26 million dollars, which made it a critical and financial failure.
04:50We don't know if anyone wanted to see The Whole Eleven Yards, but all this was assured that they wouldn't.
05:0316. XXXII Emergency State
05:07The first XXX was a fun movie that perfectly embodied this macho attitude of the early 2000s.
05:21Fast cars, extreme acrobatics, Vin Diesel, what more could you ask for?
05:25Unfortunately, Sony didn't understand anything and replaced Diesel with Ice Cube for the sequel.
05:32Titled Emergency State, the second XXX movie was received with coldness,
05:37with its illogical plot, poor cinematographic performance and a significant lack of Vin Diesel.
05:44It opened in third place with 12 million dollars, before ending with a total of 71 million dollars.
05:51With a budget of 113 million dollars, this movie crashed harder than the Corvette that Sander Cage drives from a bridge.
06:0115. Mortal Kombat Annihilation
06:13This sequel is firmly in the hall of fame of bad movies.
06:19In fact, it could be argued that it is one of the most mediocre movies ever released by an important studio.
06:3115. Mortal Kombat
06:41The first Mortal Kombat is fondly remembered by those looking for some nostalgia from the 90s,
06:47and raised a respectable 122 million dollars.
06:51In any case, it showed that video game adaptations could be really good.
06:57Annihilation undid all that goodwill in 95 unbearable minutes.
07:03The producer Lawrence Kasinoff later admitted that the movie was not finished,
07:08which explains to a large extent its poor quality.
07:11Although it opened relatively strong with 16.7 million dollars,
07:16the bad reputation spread quickly and ended up raising only 51 million dollars worldwide.
07:24Plans for a third movie were immediately abandoned.
07:3714. Caddyshack 2
07:39There is nothing more iconic than the first Caddyshack movie.
07:44You will receive total consciousness.
07:49So I got that going for you.
07:52Which is nice.
07:53Released in 1980, it was directed by the legendary filmmaker Harold Ramis.
07:59It has in its presence important movie legends.
08:02It was also a great success, raising ten times its budget with a total of 60 million dollars.
08:09And then came Caddyshack 2,
08:11and the best thing it had to offer was Kenny Loggins' Nobody's Fool.
08:16Everything else is ridiculous and not in the good sense.
08:20Many people associated with the film regret having made it,
08:24including Ramis, director Alan Arcus and then Warner Bros. production chief Mark Canton.
08:32Bill Murray has also spoken negatively about it.
08:35The sequel was a great failure, raising just under 12 million dollars with a budget of 20 million dollars.
08:55The sequels that replace or discard beloved characters almost never work.
09:00The first Speed is a classic of the action genre.
09:03Janu Reeves and Sandra Bullock have an exceptional chemistry,
09:08and their relationship is a big part of the success of the movie.
09:16But Reeves rejected the sequel for various reasons, and was replaced by Jason Patrick.
09:22We have nothing against him, but his participation just didn't work.
09:27Neither did the movie's setting, since most critics found that a cruise was a terribly boring and illogical choice.
09:36Speed 2 received eight nominations at the Razzi, and raised 164 million dollars,
09:42about half of the 350 million dollars of the first movie.
09:48The movie drowned without recovering its budget.
09:58We believe that Alice in Wonderland even surprised Disney.
10:02Few people could have predicted the success of the first movie,
10:06which won three Oscar nominations and raised more than a billion dollars.
10:27However, almost no one saw Alice through the mirror.
10:31The three Oscar nominations were replaced by three Razzi awards,
10:35including that of the worst cast member for Johnny Depp.
10:39It also raised less than a third of the original, ending with only 300 million dollars.
10:46Only 77 million dollars of this came from the domestic market.
10:51This is especially embarrassing compared to the first movie, which raised 116 million dollars only in its first weekend.
11:00These effects are not cheap, and it is estimated that Alice through the mirror made Disney lose about 70 million dollars.
11:09Hatter is my truest friend. If he's in need, I will help him, no matter what.
11:16Number 11, Zoolander 2.
11:18The sequels, which come more than ten years after the original movie, almost never get good results.
11:25Zoolander's first was released in September 2001 and raised a very modest figure of 60 million dollars.
11:33But since then it has become a kind of cult classic, which prompted the production of this sequel too late.
11:46Released almost 15 years later, in February 2016, Zoolander 2 received harsh criticism and eight nominations from the Razzi,
11:55with Kristen Wiig winning as the worst cast member.
12:00It raised only 15 million dollars during the President's Day weekend, opening in fourth place behind Deadpool.
12:08It continued to earn less than the original with 56.7 million dollars.
12:13Even worse, this movie had a budget of 50 million dollars, while the first cost half.
12:30Number 10, Fantastic Beasts Dumbledore's Secrets.
12:34Warner Bros. is sitting on a gold mine with its rights over the universe of Harry Potter.
12:40However, we had never seen such a failed intellectual property.
12:46The world will hear our voice.
12:51And it will be deafening.
12:53Both Grindelwald's crimes and Dumbledore's secrets were immensely disappointing,
13:00and the latter did not have the good will of the first film to resort to.
13:06As such, it really failed in the box office, it earned only 407 million dollars,
13:12which makes it the least sought-after film in the entire Harry Potter franchise.
13:17And with a budget of 200 million dollars, these were not the numbers that Warner Bros. wanted.
13:23J.K. Rowling stated that they were making five movies of fantastic animals,
13:29but the horrible performance of this one practically ended those hopes.
13:43Number 9, Independence Day Resurgence.
13:46We feel that Independence Day is one of those movies that did not need a sequel,
13:52and even if so, it was a kind of agreement while the circumstances were still favorable.
13:58Today we celebrate our Independence Day.
14:05Instead, Resurgence, like Zoolander 2, was released a long time after the original,
14:1120 years to be exact.
14:13As a result, it raised approximately half of the original, with a global total of 390 million dollars.
14:21With a production budget of 165 million dollars, it was considered a great disappointment.
14:28The reasons for its failure are many, including the long gap between films,
14:33the fierce competition of other premieres, the so-called sequelitis,
14:38and a significant lack of Will Smith.
14:42Number 8, Evan Almighty.
14:45There are no films much more unnecessary or ridiculous than Evan Almighty.
14:50This sequel to Bruce Almighty follows Evan, the news presenter of the original film,
14:57who probably won his own spin-off only for that scene in which Bruce forces him to dredge the news.
15:12In this film, Evan is forced to assume the role of Noah,
15:16and builds a huge ark for an imminent flood.
15:27Yes, they didn't even come up with an original idea for the story,
15:31and to make matters worse, the film had the amazing amount of 175 million dollars.
15:37Unfortunately, the profits disappeared when the film ended up raising only 173 million dollars worldwide.
15:47Number 7, Shaft.
15:49Of course, Shaft of the year 2000, which was at the same time a new version of the film of 1971,
15:55and an argumental sequel, headed the box office and was positively received by critics.
16:02But that doesn't mean that putting Samuel L. Jackson back in the role of the man related to the original John Shaft will also be a success.
16:22Obviously, that's what the directors expected behind this second remake sequel when they released Shaft in 2017.
16:31Which followed J.J., Shaft's son.
16:37But that's not what happened.
16:39In fact, the action comedy raised only a miserable 21 million dollars in box office,
16:45while its budget ranged between 30 and 35 million dollars.
16:49The update of the Shaft series was more outdated than anything else.
16:55Number 6, Basic Instinct 2.
16:58Yes, this is a real movie.
17:01And yes, it was something that absolutely nobody asked for.
17:10The original Basic Instinct was a good movie, but its main claim to fame was the sensual performance of Sharon Stone.
17:19It was a movie that teenagers rented covertly and hid from their parents.
17:25Now, here's an unwanted sequel, released 14 years later and at a time when sexuality wasn't so taboo and didn't guarantee a lot of money.
17:36And yes, it didn't earn a lot of money.
17:39He said you murdered a Johnny Barz and two detectives in San Francisco.
17:43I was never even charged.
18:08This opportunity to spy on past mistakes doesn't always help to return an intellectual property to its former glory.
18:23While critics seemed to agree that this sixth movie was better than many previous installments,
18:29Dark Fate still didn't surprise them or the audience.
18:34Acting as a direct sequel to the first two Terminator movies,
18:38the action and science fiction movie not only repeated points from the previous plot,
18:43but it also ended up becoming a failure in box office.
18:48When comparing its production budget of between $185 and $196 million,
18:54with its box office earnings of $255 million,
18:59the balance point of the movie has estimates that point to a loss of up to $130 million.
19:14And we thought that Caddyshack 2 was unnecessary.
19:19The Blues Brothers is a classic of cult released with great success of critics and notable financial success in 1980.
19:29Almost 20 years later, an extraordinarily unnecessary sequel was released with John Goodman trying to take over the place of John Belushi.
19:42Everything turned out as well as one would expect.
19:45While some people saw the movie as an acceptable tribute to the original with a spectacular soundtrack,
19:52others saw it as a disappointing sequel that tainted the original and insulted Belushi's memory.
20:00The movie only raised $14 million in the box office,
20:07approximately 12% of the $115 million gross of the original.
20:16Just a decade after Sin City, the original,
20:19A Dame to Kill 4 captures the same visual magic as its predecessor
20:24and retains much of its charming cast, including Bruce Willis and Mickey Rourke.
20:34There are even some new and interesting additions like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin and Eva Green.
20:42While the cast and style were certainly there, the relevance would have disappeared a long time ago.
20:48I thought there was another world out there. I thought I could be a part of it.
20:53With an estimated budget of $65 million, the movie raised the tragic amount of $13 million in the national box office.
21:03It did not do much better abroad, accumulating a worldwide collection of only $39 million.
21:10This is a depressing story worthy of Sin City.
21:15X-Men Dark Phoenix
21:17One would think that after 12 attempts they would have already discovered the formula for the box office success.
21:23But the debut as director of Simon Kinberg, who wrote several of the scripts of the previous films, still did not do things right.
21:33So what does that mean?
21:35It means we'll have to build a better machine.
21:39At least in terms of numbers it was not like that, although the critics of the films were also quite unfavorable.
21:47The sequel to X-Men Apocalypse of 2016 shows the failure of a space mission, and the X-Men have to face Phoenix.
21:56Please, stop.
21:58Not until I know you're going to be okay.
22:01Something's happening to me.
22:03However, despite an incredible distribution, this conclusion of the X-Men franchise of Fox would become the film with the least collection of the series.
22:13Disappointingly, collecting only about $52 million more than its production budget of $200 million.
22:22We have not reached the end yet, but almost.

22:31Very well, let's see our position number 1.
22:34Number 1. Son of the Mask
22:36Making a sequel to The Mask without Jim Carrey is one thing, replacing it with Jamie Kennedy is another.
22:44Excuse me, my bad.
22:47Son of the Mask was too strange, which is a saying, considering the original's frenetic energy.
22:54The humor was childish, let's not even talk about that strange baby in CGI.
22:59It is disconcerting that this comedy has received green light with a budget of between $84 and $100 million.
23:09Son of the Mask.
23:13What is not disconcerting, however, is that the film only earned $17 million in the national box office and $57 million worldwide,
23:23which apparently shows that everyone thought that this film belonged to the bottom of a river, just like his mask.
