00:00My flatmate Chris and I are heading to Nepal to do the Everest Base Camp Trek.

00:09Yeah, we're ready to go already. I'm kind of itching to go because we've had our flight,

00:13we've had all the prep. Lead the way Chris. I lead the way.

00:19The 12 day trek is a round trip of 124km, reaching an altitude of 5545m, or 18,000ft

00:27above sea level. I'm feeling very determined this morning

00:30because we're going to get to Everest. Let's go do this.

00:34There's just one problem with our plan, in that 18 months ago, Chris and I tried to reach

00:39the Tibetan Everest Base Camp, only for Chris to be hospitalised for 3 nights with severe

00:43altitude sickness. The main thing we need to do is get him to

00:47lower altitude, but what that means is maybe missing Mount Everest.

00:53The question I've been asked most is what have you done, have you been training to go

00:56back to Everest? I don't think people realise when we're talking about altitude sickness,

01:00it's a pathological thing. You either get it or you don't get it. It's like car sickness.

01:04Truth is, we don't know if Chris will get ill again. We don't know if I'll get ill this

01:07time, we don't know how we're both going to respond to the altitude. We just don't know

01:11if we're going to make it to Everest.

01:33The bad news this morning is that David's not got any better, I don't think he'll be

01:38able to make it any further. Probably physically the hardest thing I've

01:43ever done. Take your hands off your face. Now we're going to go play football with some

01:48Buddhist monks halfway up to Everest. That's 52% of the oxygen that they have at sea level.
