00:00Hi everybody!
00:09Today is Sunday, October 27, 2019, 4.05pm.
00:16It is 19 degrees Celsius, 66 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:20I'm in front of Jane's Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park and today I'm going to take you
00:27on a tour of Dumbo.
00:29But instead of walking through Brooklyn Bridge Park today, I'm going to take you through
00:34the lesser known streets of Dumbo, that being Water Street and Front Street.
00:50You can check out some of my other videos of Dumbo, I just want to change it up with
00:55this video where I go through Brooklyn Bridge Park, I go over the Brooklyn Bridge.
01:07Inside this building here, you can get a lot of great things to eat and places to hang
01:11out.
01:12It's the Time Out Market on the first floor.
01:15There's also a rooftop bar up there where you can sit down and have a drink.
01:22This is the St. Anne's Warehouse, it's been converted into a theatrical place.
01:29Before it used to be an industrial warehouse and now it's a performing arts center.
01:45So you see here, inside is the Time Out Market in New York, basically it showcases New York's
01:51best restaurants, bars, and experiences all under one roof.
01:58Made famous by Time Out magazine.
02:06They have everything from custom bagels in there to cookie dough you can eat instead
02:12of ice cream.
02:13Very, very unique places.
02:21So this is Water Street, Brooklyn Bridge is to my right, and I'm going to continue walking
02:28over here.
02:33The street is lined with Belgian blocks, keeping with the historical nature of Dumbo.
02:40There used to be a lot of freight railroads that came here to pick up supplies all the
02:46way from the coastline.
02:49Dumbo, by the way, stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, it's an acronym.
02:56There you can see the Time Out Market, the custom bagels that I showed you before.
03:03Looks more of a horseshoe than a bagel, it's kind of strange, you gotta check it out.
03:14There was a very heavy downpour of rain recently, which just stopped.
03:27Here's Empire Stores, features West Elm inside.
03:35You can also go inside here to connect to the Time Out Market as well.
03:41But the Brooklyn Historical Society is also inside here.
03:46Oh, yeah, okay, I'm from Queens too, alright, no Astoria, yeah, alright, we got some Queens
03:59folks here, yep.
04:06Here we got the whole Bull Brewpoint Brewing Company, haven't tried that place but I know
04:15it's very good.
04:22This pigeon's just been walking ahead of me this whole time.
04:34There's an art gallery here, Diane Meyer Berlin.
04:50Here's Main Street and Water Street.
05:05Now this place I've tried before, One Girl Cookies, excellent, you have to try all their
05:10cookies and everything is handmade too.
05:29Here there's A Gear, fashion store, looks like a cadence more towards the skateboard
05:39community.
05:56I've approached Washington Street.
06:01This is a very famous spot to take pictures.
06:11Here you can get a frame, a perfect picture of the Empire State Building located through
06:18the arch of the Manhattan Bridge, that's why everybody comes here to take a picture.
06:25You can't really see the Empire State Building right now because it's so foggy out.
06:37If you want a better picture, I advise you to walk further up towards Front Street and
06:50get very low to the ground, then you'll see a better image of the Empire State Building.
06:59There's a gym here, Gleason's Gym.
07:12This huge structure in front of me is the Manhattan Bridge.
07:20And you can see here the old railroad tracks, part of Dumbo's Pass, the industrial neighborhood.
07:33There's a picturesque view of the Manhattan Bridge from this angle.
07:42And now this is one of the archways underneath the Manhattan Bridge.
07:46They host a lot of events here, sometimes there's music, music performances or flea
07:53markets like here.
07:59This is what you'll miss if you stay under the Brooklyn Bridge Park instead of wandering
08:05around the neighborhood.
08:07You'll catch special events such as this.
08:12There's a Winter Flea and Smorgasburg opening November 2nd and 3rd, a couple of days from now.
08:24There's even custom jewelry here.
08:28Looks like those are magnets for sale.
08:33Giant flea market here.
08:39Got some sports apparel.
08:51See the sign there?
08:53Every Sunday is Brooklyn Flea.
09:09The Brooklyn Flea oftentimes has their vendors set up over here, but because it was raining
09:14so much, they moved underneath the overpass.
09:26There's a handful of businesses on this side of the street.
09:29Love Dough, Hunter Douglas, Archway Cafe or Cafe Archway.
09:41Here's a view of this section of Dumbo.
09:43You can see that there's still some signs of its industrial past.
09:48The CrossFit Dumbo looks like it's been in the original building.
09:54Now I'm walking on this side of Dumbo, which isn't as well-known as that other section.
10:24Here is J Street.
10:49That's why it's always good to act prudent.
11:08That driver had the vehicle's left turn signal on, but instead ended up going straight.
11:24So you see here, Dumbo is still very commercial on this side of the street.
11:32Hasn't really developed completely.
11:37Only the areas underneath the Manhattan Bridge and westward.
11:57And in fact, starting from the next block after Bridge Street, I'll be entering the neighborhood of Vinegar Hill.
12:13So Vinegar Hill is unique because it used to be called the Irish Town of America.
12:20And it's named after the Battle of Vinegar Hill and engagement near Anisforthy during the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
12:46I don't really know if there's still a large Irish population in Vinegar Hill, but I know there used to be a large one.
13:16Okay, this is Bridge Street.
13:29I'm walking into the neighborhood of Vinegar Hill right now.
13:33This area, also like Dumbo, used to be very industrial.
13:40And many of the buildings during the construction of the Manhattan Bridge had to be moved away and the land seized.
14:04There's a, looks like a private game center over there.
14:09They have laser tag and an archery studio, looks like.
14:14Oh, sure.
14:16Action Kid on YouTube, yeah.
14:20Alright, so I just met two fans of mine. That was pretty cool.
14:24Just me walking around in Vinegar Hill and I meet two random fans of mine.
14:43Here's a building under construction, 250 Water Street.
15:11I love Dumbo. This is very unique.
15:16Hmm.
15:19And then there's a vacant lot over here.
15:47Now I'm at Gold Street.
15:49And this building on the corner here, the landlord decided to decorate the place.
15:57Spider webs, pumpkins, and a spider.
16:03Or two spiders, I should say.
16:05There's another one over here.
16:33Hmm.
16:52To be honest, this is very weird coming down this way.
16:59I've never really been down this street before.
17:02This is my first time going down this street.
17:07Usually I stick to the other side of Dumbo, but it's always good to explore, right?
17:22This area experienced a revitalization when artists moved in
17:28They wanted to be close to Manhattan with the views of Manhattan and they built up the area.
17:40That's happened to a lot of New York City neighborhoods.
17:43An area gets distressed and then artists move in because they see the neighborhood as a good opportunity for cheap housing, inexpensive housing.
17:55And then the area gets gentrified.
18:00The most prominent example is Soho and Williamsburg.
18:27As you see right there across the street, Galleria Gaia.
18:31Prime example of artists that moved into the area.
18:50I'm going to walk here back to Dumbo.
19:07This is a public school, P.S. 307 Daniel Hale Williams.
19:37Actually, I think this entire area used to be called Vinegar Hill, which encompasses modern-day Dumbo.
19:47But because the Manhattan Bridge was built up, real estate interests created the name Dumbo in order to attract more people into the area.
20:00This entire area used to be called Vinegar Hill.
20:04But now the current Vinegar Hill name only encompasses everything east of Bridge Street.
20:12I remember reading about that before.
20:36There's Front Street and Gold Street.
20:56This might be a temple or something.
21:03Okay, I'm looking on Google Maps. This is a Buddhist center.
21:07Dorje Ling Buddhist Center.
21:13Very interesting.
21:22There's also a few homes over here.
21:29There's also a sign on that lamppost saying this is the Vinegar Hill Historic District.
21:59Come on, Agnes! Go!
22:20Oh, it finally went.
22:23That dog definitely had a lot of drool on its mouth.
22:28Kind of cute, actually.
22:54New development going up.
23:04Looks like I have to cross the street in order to continue on to Front Street.
23:11Oh, no.
23:15That sweater just got ruined being dropped in a puddle.
23:26This development is huge.
23:29Takes up the entire block.
23:49I remember coming down this block during the five-wheeler bicycle tour back in May.
24:18It's a tight fit here with this car.
24:38In fact, that Infiniti is parked partly on the sidewalk.
24:50Wow, this car is a classic.
24:54This car is amazing.
25:10Area 53 laser tag.
25:35So I'm back in the busier section of Vinegar Hill, what is now known today as Dumbo.
25:45Also the much noisier section as well, as evidenced by the subway.
25:52The city didn't think too much about soundproofing the Manhattan Bridge,
25:57Because that entire structure is made of metal and steel.
26:01The sound just echoes throughout the whole area.
26:26Okay, I'm looking down Pearl Street where I was walking before.
26:56It's amazing how the weather is changing.
27:25It's amazing how the weather just cleared up like this.
27:32There's a bagel store on the corner, La Bagel Delight.
27:46Another gym here, Equinox.
28:02There goes another subway.
28:13Melt ice cream sandwiches, they're delicious.
28:18I get their ice cream sandwiches frequently when I walk over the High Line.
28:38What I'll do right now is I'll walk on Picture Street.
28:42No, I'm just kidding, it's officially named Washington Street.
28:47I just love this street so much.
28:54Back to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
29:02The area of Front Street past this street is pretty well known, so I don't feel like I need to record it.
29:15We'll move over to the side.
29:45Look at this view, it's absolutely incredible.
30:14The city should eventually close this street off to traffic.
30:17There's just so many people here that it doesn't really make sense to keep it open for vehicles.
30:41I think I'll walk to Pebble Beach and then end the video there, giving you an iconic view of the Manhattan skyline.
31:11This playground is very unique in that it inspires a lot of influence from the old past.
31:35This entire play area is designed and modeled on an old wooden ship.
31:56Okay, here's Pebble Beach.
32:07I don't know if there'll be too many pebbles left after all these kids throw them all into the river.
32:17Anyway, I'll be ending the video here.
32:20If you enjoyed it, be sure to like, comment down below, and subscribe if you haven't already.
32:27Hope you enjoyed this walk of the lesser known areas of Dumbo and Vinegar Hill.
32:39And I hope to see you all next time.
32:42Take it easy, everyone.
33:13Oh, yeah.
33:16We're talking about
