00:00Hello, I am Dr. Navya, Consultant Pediatrician at Pace Hospital's Hydec City Hyderabad.
00:12Breast milk is the best milk for your baby. Here we gonna see the benefits of the breast
00:15milk.
00:16Number 1. Breast milk provides all the nutrition and energy requirement of the baby for the
00:20first few months of life.
00:22Number 2. Breast milk is easily digestible and it reduces the tummy trouble.
00:27Number 3. Breast feeding enhances the bonding between the mother and the baby.
00:31Number 4. Breast milk boosts the immunity of the baby and it protects the baby from
00:35the infections.
00:36Number 5. Breast milk lowers the risk of asthma, diabetes, obesity later in life.
00:43Number 6. Breast milk is helpful in the development of the brain, so breast fed children have
00:48better IQ.
00:52Many of the first time moms are very anxious and have lot of doubts how to breast feed
00:56their babies. So first choose your breast feeding position that is comfortable for you
01:02as well as for your baby. So when you sit and feed your baby always make sure your back
01:07is straight and well supported. Hold the baby close to you at the level of breast and make
01:13sure to turn the baby towards you such a way that baby tummy touches yours and face is
01:19towards the breast, nose opposite to the nipple so that baby can take the nipple and the areola
01:24into the mouth and latch onto the breast and it promotes sucking effectively. With the
01:30latching and sucking is well established, let the baby feed as long as baby wants to
01:35so that baby gets both the thin water milk at the beginning of the feed which quenches
01:41the thirst of the baby as well as thick fatty milk at the end of the milk which satisfies
01:46the hunger of the baby. So when the baby's stomach is full, baby will fall asleep and
01:52gets off the breast by herself.
01:58There are various breast feeding positions like cradle position, cross cradle position,
02:02football position and sideline position. Try various positions and choose one position
02:08which is comfortable for you as well as for your baby.
02:14Sideline breast feeding position is when both the mother and baby are lying on their sides
02:19while breast feeding. This position is helpful for both the mother and baby during nights
02:24when they need to rest while breast feeding. This position is saviour for C-section mothers
02:30who are not able to sit upright during first few days.
02:34And there are few safety tips to be followed while breast feeding your baby in sideline
02:38position. Always make sure there is someone in the same room while feeding your baby.
02:44Also when you fall asleep before the baby finishes the breast feed, the person in the
02:49room can lift the baby up and burp the baby and make the baby sleep on their back. Because
02:56baby should not be kept for a longer duration on the sideline position. And second one is
03:02always make sure there are no soft toys or blankets around the baby in the sideline position
03:08which can suffocate the baby.
03:11Babies cry for various reasons apart from the hunger like discomfort when the diaper
03:18is full, when the baby feels hot or cold and at times simply when the baby wants to be
03:23picked up and cuddled. So to identify whether baby is hungry, there are few early hunger
03:28cues every mother has to notice like opening of the mouth, bringing hands towards the mouth,
03:35lip licking and sucking movements. When these hunger cues are missed and baby is not fed,
03:41baby may start crying vigorously. So to avoid this, every mother has to notice these hunger
03:48cues early and then feed their baby as early as possible.
03:55When baby gets enough breast milk, baby will fall asleep for a minimum of 2 hours after
04:00each feed and baby will pass urine upto 6-8 times per day and baby will gain weight. These
04:07things has to be noticed by every mother who are giving exclusive breastfeeding for their babies.
04:16All the breastfeeding mothers has to consume extra calories and proteins to meet the nutrition
04:21requirement of both the baby and the mother. So the diet of breastfeeding mothers should
04:27include seasonally available vegetables, green leafy vegetables, whole grains like brown rice
04:32and millets and include proteins in the form of egg, chicken and seafoods. There is no restriction
04:38in the vegetables, fruits or any green leafy vegetables. So last but not least, stay hydrated,
04:45consume plenty of fruits.
04:47FOODS TO AVOID DURING BREASTFEEDING
04:511. Avoid ultra-processed food and food that contain preservatives and artificial additives.
04:592. Avoid food that contains high sugar content like beverages and sweets.
05:053. Avoid caffeine-containing drinks like tea and coffee.
05:094. Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol.
05:135. Avoid foods that you are allergic to.
05:17BREASTFEEDING MOTHERS
05:20As already discussed, breastfeeding moms has to consume extra calories and proteins to meet the
05:25nutrition requirement of both the baby and the mother. So the diet of the breastfeeding mom
05:30has to include adequate amount of calories and proteins. It should include seasonal vegetables,
05:36green leafy vegetables, whole grains like brown rice and millets and include proteins in the form
05:42of egg, chicken, seafoods. Apart from the diet, breastfeeding mothers has to be stress-free.
05:48Most of the first time moms are anxious and stressed that they are not getting enough milk.
05:53So it's only your perception. Just be confident and ensure the proper positioning and latching
05:59while breastfeeding your baby. Always let the baby feed as long as baby wants to.
06:04So that emptying of the breast will promote the adequate milk production.
06:08When the breast is not emptied properly, the milk present in the breast contains a protein called FIL
06:14that is Factor Inhibiting Lactation. It inhibits the milk production.
06:18So always make sure breast is emptied properly either by direct breastfeeding the baby
06:24or by manual pumping when the latching and sucking of the baby is not well.
06:32Many parents of the newborn frequently ask me,
06:34Doctor, why my baby bowls after feeding?
06:37And it causes lot of anxiety in the parents.
06:40So when the baby swallows milk from breast or the bottle, lot of egg goes inside the stomach along with the milk.
06:47After feeding, when this egg tries to come out, it carries some amount of milk
06:51which is in the form of curd in consistency.
06:54When it is in small quantities, nothing to worry.
06:57To avoid this, always burp the baby for 15-20 minutes after each feed.
07:04WHO recommends to initiate breast milk within 1 hour after birth
07:09and also give exclusive breast milk for first 6 months of life.
07:13It means no other food including water to be given for babies less than 6 months of age.
07:19Some of the mothers due to lack of knowledge and listening to the elders and neighbors' advice
07:24they give water, honey and other food items for their babies less than 6 months of age.
07:30So never ever give water, honey or any other food items for the babies less than 6 months of age.
07:35Exclusive breast milk for first 6 months of age will meet the nutritional requirement of the baby.
